Hey all
I'm a first time contest entrant, very much looking forward to churning out something and having a bit of fun over the next 8 weeks.

I'm pretty sure that I will be attempting to depict the ancient Celtic horned god Cernunnos. He appears in many forms in mythology all over the world and through time, but most commonly he appears as a function of the cycle of nature and the seasons. He embodies a potent male archetype whose function it is to impregnate the summer goddess and bring Spring and fertility to the land. He is also recognised as a god of the hunt, animals and nature in general.

How I'm supposed to incorporate steampunk technology into one of the most potent symbols of nature is going to be the challenge I suspect. I want to intertwine traditional celtic and pagan symbols with some of steampunk iconography and try to tell the annual story of birth and death.

Some concept stuff when I get home from work, not that I can draw at all...

Here's the character concept I have so far.
I'm really awful at drawing so I sort of copied the pose from an old photograph, his arm will most likely not be cocked up like that. I want one arm to be strongly steampunk and one to have more celtic/steampunk tattoo and woad on it.

The style I'm trying to acheive is that of a Victorian era portrait photograph or painting, the setting I havent quite decided on yet. I intend on having greenery and plants erupting around his hooves though. (

A basemesh for sculpting the first prototype of the character in Zbrush. I will tweak the proportions a lot in ZBrush but I tried to get them kinda close in MAX first. No antlers yet.

A composition/setting test. I wanted to convey the changing of the seasons and get some nice colour contrasts so I thought a winter setting might work. It's a bit vanilla at the moment but I'll work on it.

I've stuck my prototype head on the body basemesh and sculpted up a few levels to get a feel for the proportions and anatomy. I'm aiming for a muscular build but not bodybuilder. I also modelled lowpoly antlers in max and brought them in, they are symmetrical at the moment but I will change this later.

Still prototyping this character. I feel like I'm making some headway and the form is getting stronger. The hands are weak but I might wait until I pose them to continue working on them.

I'm really struggling with composition as I never paint anything and I've neglected to learn how to compose an image properly.

I think this is the composition I will go with, I'm trying to convey a Winter/Spring transition through a full length portrait of this character. I should be able to do some interesting things with light in the image too hopefully.

Posing up the mdoel and testing out my idea for a composition. The model itself needs work and will probably change a bit, especially around the legs.

My progress on the glove. It's not very 'steampunk' yet. The design is plate armour mixed with victorian and some celtic detailing. It's a bit messy and unfinished but I want to see how it sits on the posed character before I model any more.

Dude the glove is coming along really nice. Cant wait until its textures with dirt and scratches over it and you have finished modeling it.

To do the glove details I drew out the designs with splines and used them as a template to make polys, which I shelled, bent and FFD'ed into position.

Another composition test. Haven't had much time to work on this. I've based this on Victorian era portrait photography which often has a very contrived look. The chair is a placeholder. No modeling is even close to final yet.

I'm still settling on a pose for this that doesn't suck. I think I'm on the right track with this one but please feel free to tell me otherwise. Everything still WIP. I need to get going seriously on the costume, I can't draw so I tend to concept stuff out in 3D, which takes ages and I scrap heaps of stuff anyway. I'm still going for the quirky "Victorian Gentleman" angle, as if the character has been forced into a noble yet slightly uncomfortable pose. I'm still not totally convinced about the chair but I'll get it closer to finished before I scrap it. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

really liking the composition and modeling. :)

maybe a way you can incorporate nature into the piece is by having an elaborate wall paper design behind (cutout leaves or something). ?

I was definitely thinking of wallpaper of some kind for the back wall.
It would fit in well with the Victorian theme I'm tyring to go with.
I will hopefully have foliage and moss and vines erupting all around the character and creeping all over the place and up the wall also.

Some more modeling and yet another change of pose. I'm struggling to stay with this project due to several constraints on my time. I'm thinking of some kind of spear or staff or something in his hand. Still heaps to do with modeling before I even look at anything else.

Your pipeline and modeling is great...if it helps the framing / pose that i like from your tests is the one where he is infront of the tree...i think it's the best one...:thumbsup:

I'm still trying to find balance in the pose and proportions I'm not quite there yet. The grasping hand need lots of work. I've detailed the boot-things a bit, the straps need to be brought up to the level of the rest of it.

Any comments much appreciated

Making some progress with the modeling. I haven't decided what to put on top of the staff yet, and the wrappings need some love. I've done little bits here and there on the costume but still heaps to be done before I look at texturing and hair and stuff. I can tell already that I'll be pushing it for time, ouch!

I haven't done much work on this for a few weeks. Started on texturing even though there's lots more stuff I need to fix up and finish with the modeling. Because I went about this whole thing in the wrong way, my workflow is a mess and it is causing me problems now. At least I'm getting some practice texturing which I sorely need.

modeling and pose looks great, I like those details on armor. I agree vith Yuriy about lighting. Im looking forward next updates :thumbsup:
