I've been around a lot of challenges, never took part, sometimes regretted it later. This time I love the topic, can't pass it up! Good luck to everyone :)

I'm sure there will be lots of incarnations of Icarus in this challenge but it's a good concept to start off with. I honestly don't know if I'll use this character/myth for my final but it's a good start.

Ha! I'm doing Icarus as well, though I suspect my take on it may differ from yours just a little bit... :D

Good Luck............

Baba Yaga is an old Slavic legend. Also lending herself perfectly for this challenge as the old witch is motorized!

Anyways, it was a quick sketch. Not sure how I feel about the image or character. It does seem like I want to do something which flies though.

last concept (as an idea) is awesome
but .need more details i guess

Very cool. Looks like a classic witch with a steam punk twist.

Nice work so far!

Baba Yaga rides in a giant mortar and steers with an equally giant pestle. She also drags a broom from behind to cover her tracks. Maybe you can incorporate these items into the ships' design.

looking Forward to this one :buttrock:

Hehe cool, why not make a vehicle which is only engine :O! Would be cool if her/his hair/cloth was laying more back and flapping in the wind so the speed would be shown, right now it look quite slow. Awesome challenge right!? Keep it up!

Luv the baba Yaga concept. Doesn't she also have a chicken hut on legs that roams the dark forest?

Good luck with this.

11 November 2008, 03:47 PM
Yeah, she does...
btw, off the topic, where do you know this from ?

Междудругото, Ник, познаваме ли се ?

Късмет в челинджа...
Лично аз, сигурно смених вече 20 абсолютно различни идеи...
Не мога да се спра на крайно решение...

excuse me for the foreign language... :)

Good luck Nik!

Yeah, she does...
btw, off the topic, where do you know this from ?

I honestly can't remember but the thought of a steampunk hunt on chicken legs hunting children through a forest sounds pretty creepy to my mind

Here is another concept sketch for Baba Yaga. I think I'm going to give her a mechanical leg.

I'm also considering doing the engine in 3d and at least part of the final product.

Thanks a lot for the comments guys. I'm still not sure about using this character but the more I think about it the more I want to do the old Baba.

Pencil sketch concept for the engine.

Looking good Nik. Really like the last engine design. Will it be a jet or is this a steam machine?:)

nice looking engine mate  keep going :wip:

Well, obviously the challenge is steampunk so it has to be steam, though my initial concept and this sketch are obviously jet propulsion based... but who says steam technology cannot evolve to the point it can't power a jet engine?

I tried to make it more steamlike by including the hole with the gears and chains in there. I'm actually going to render this engine out more in 2d and attempt to do it in 3d at some point. Actually I'm starting to realize this challenge is not that long... so it limits what I can do with it.

At this point my engineering brain is also hurting with trying to make this thing somewhat realistic in terms of control capabilities. I think I'll add 2 minor engines on the back for steering and maybe even make them use propellers?

The sad part is that I'm not even sure I'm settled on Baba Yaga as the character I really want to illustrate for this. I have a lot of other legends in mind which lend themselves to this challenge perfectly.

Either way I need to decide on the final concept soon so I can start working on the story some. Hopefully I get some time to work this weekend but Thanksgiving is coming up soon so I'll have little excuses not to do more work at that point and really move forward with this.

Thanks a lot for the comments everyone. I really need them to push forward with this.

Cool stuff Nik!

Hi there!

Well, I love the Babba Yaga idea. This can be very funny with a steampunkish approach. I see no problem with the use of jet propulsion, anything is possible, only the visual aspects could be worked further to build a very cool machine: I think you can try adding some baroque pedals and her seat could be a decorated leather one with brass levers or ever joysticks on the arms. Good luck!

Here is a somewhat refined version of the engine which is better shaded. I was thinking of making it bronze but we'll see.

Thanks a lot for the comments guys!
