Here it goes...
I'm still looking for ideas. I thought a steam punked cinderella could be interesting to work on. Don't know if I stick on that idea but anyways it's a start.

11 November 2008, 08:29 AM (

Did a first rough colored version of the pumpkin coach.

11 November 2008, 08:33 AM

Ich liebe es so weit. Die Farben sind unglaublich, aber natürlich, dass ist Ihre Spezialität!! Mehr, bitte....

I love it so far-- the colours are incredible, but of course that is your speciality. Rock on!

11 November 2008, 09:10 AM

can't wait to see the updates :)

- Yusuf

11 November 2008, 09:05 PM
Hey Goro, I think your design is really cool, but to comment further it would be helpful to know the changes in the story to support this visual style.

good luck!

11 November 2008, 09:25 PM
Yarr, mighty fine sketches you have there. I'm digging the coach design; will that one still have the mechanical horse though? Good luck :)

11 November 2008, 10:04 PM
Love the idea!!!
Will be watching this thread!

11 November 2008, 10:42 PM
Greatest works like always Goro;
keep up awesomeness here!

11 November 2008, 11:13 PM (

Just brainstorming a couple of character sketches for cinderella...I'll work on the horses and more detailed character sketches soon...

11 November 2008, 11:28 PM
It's fantastic how you manage to add some personality to your characters already so early in the process. My deepest respect. Personally I could never do so interesting character designs :)

11 November 2008, 11:32 PM
I like the pumpkin concept so much :D

have fun and good luck of course =)

11 November 2008, 11:35 PM
Hey Goro, your sketch are lovable, and simple and colorfull with soft and non-agressive shape as like to watch. Great character design , a real pleasure to come on your thread.
Cinderella is a great children fairy tale, but I would find dangerous to treat it as a "Myth and Legend"... Not evident, cause your idea fit in the "well known" story ( quote challenge front page : An artistic challenge to explore gears, springs, brass and steam set around some of the world's best known stories. ) but fit difficult with the title of " Myths & Legend" Imo. May be I seek "to far" in the instructions.
I will look for any of yours updates

EDIT : I have my answer, and sorry to share doubt about Cinderrella :
your idea totally feet in the instruction cause of the completion information of the link above...

11 November 2008, 01:39 AM
So far so cute :)))

Good luck!

11 November 2008, 01:44 AM
just awesome as always!:buttrock:

11 November 2008, 05:05 AM
Hey Goro,

Awesome sketches...... oh.... you know that :D ..... mmmmm I try to say something new.... mmm... Great gestures ! ....... ah , you know that too :D hahahahahah... ok, ok.... simply cool !! :D Ok I only can wait for your new update :D Cheers mate!

11 November 2008, 05:10 AM
Great stuff Goro, I'll love to watch the process! Oh, and I really dig the lanky horse.

Have a lot of fun.

11 November 2008, 06:12 AM
Great drawing so far G. I love the whimsy and charm in your work.

<ok fanboy mode off>

<AD mode ON>
If you continue to work on this concept try to remember the core elements of the story.
the transformations and the glamorous ball are two major ones. In your coach design I dont really see the magic in there. One possible solution would be to riff off the great quote...
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Arthur C. Clarke, "Profiles of The Future", 1961 (Clarke's third law)Meaning that the fairy godmothers tech could be so cool it looks like magic. Right now I don't think you have pushed it far enough.

<obnoxious AD mode OFF>

looks good keep it up.

11 November 2008, 07:33 AM
I really dig your first sketches!

11 November 2008, 10:06 AM
thnx for your comments everyone!

no worries :)

Heya! I know exactly what you mean! since the coach design is not final at all
I'll work on that idea. thanks

11 November 2008, 10:10 AM (

I worked on the design of the castle and
the fairy godmother. Cinderella is treated badly by the two stepsisters and is wearing only a dirty white dress.
Still looking for a good way to give the story a lil' twist.

11 November 2008, 11:41 AM
Yoho, Goro buddy, looking nice.
Love the castle design.

Also cool concepts of the characters.
But maybe for the Princess I would go for a ballroom evening type princess gown, Victorian style. I think that would fit more with the story, those goggles and leather just don't fit, unless she'd be driving the coach her self. Same goes for the Fairy Godmother design, I think.
Try to make them more grant, majestic, in a steampunkish style.

Keep em coming!

11 November 2008, 02:28 PM
love the styling mate! :p you gonna add more gizmos n stuff? i've seen your past works ; amazing details!
good luck dude!

11 November 2008, 02:43 PM
cool stuff, as usual

11 November 2008, 04:09 PM
Yowza! Subscribing to this thread now! Good luck Goro, looks promising already! As always, the level of quality in your sketches is amazing by itself.

11 November 2008, 11:40 PM
haha! great subject. really like the character designs so far!

11 November 2008, 01:54 AM
Awesome previz on that castle. Looking forward to see how this one comes out.

11 November 2008, 01:55 AM
wow, i like the concept of the fairy god mother, she just so funky, hahahaha, oh anyway, i'm a bit curious about the party, it would be good to see the party concept, nice one dude, cant wait to see more

11 November 2008, 02:05 AM
Thank you guys!!

Thnx for your feedback. I think I will redo the costumes anyways....still
haven't decided if Cinderella is going to be princess type or warrior type :)
But she definitely needs more metal instead of leather...

Sure! Once I have a clear thought about what I'm going to do ^^

I'll certainly do that as soon as I found a clear direction. Still looking for
the right style...

11 November 2008, 02:09 AM (

I followed Kory's suggestion and did another pass on the coach. The Pumpkin has a glass front now and I added a seat in front for the coachman.
Tried to make the whole coach more elegant and more steampunkish...

11 November 2008, 03:10 AM
hows going, nice to see your suff, good luck ,

11 November 2008, 03:19 AM
wow That's cool style Ireally like your character and lighting.Great!!!

11 November 2008, 04:30 AM
Really nice stuff. I just love your style.

11 November 2008, 04:35 AM
Really nice stuff. I just love your style.

11 November 2008, 05:49 AM
stellar work! like always you are one to watch. keep the wips commin!

11 November 2008, 02:36 PM
haha, lovely sketches already :D will stay near to see what turns out. Best of luck!

11 November 2008, 06:18 PM
Thanks for your comments everyone!

I realized that I have to spend more time with the story...
Otherwise I'm keep doing concepts for nothing. I might start all over again but that's fine
So the past concepts where more like warm up sketches I guess.
Thanks Kory for the inspirations!

11 November 2008, 06:22 PM
Pretty! Needs more bolts... ;D

11 November 2008, 10:21 PM
Haha, that charriot is awesome, another great update!

11 November 2008, 11:35 PM
your concept image could be the final one:) Ill have eye on your thred

11 November 2008, 02:29 AM
You're the true master of the concept sketch! Beautiful stuff as always

11 November 2008, 06:41 AM
Oh no,
THANK YOU for the great drawings!

11 November 2008, 07:10 AM
Nice man i like your style :)

11 November 2008, 07:53 AM (

OK, I gave this whole thing a second thought. I did another pass on the cinderella design this time more in the victorian style as Art2 suggested. Thnx!
Let me know which one you like best.

I want to get away from the standard dark dirty look of steampunk. The castle will be a huge industrialized clean building. The only electric power supply company that feeds the whole city with energy. Therefore the owner (the equivalent to the King) is the most important man of the country.
As he is afraid that he would never see his grandchildren he orders his son to give a ball inviting all wealthy women of the city in order to find the bride...
to be continued...

I will completely redesign the castle and the pumpkin coach.
(thanks again kory for your support!)

11 November 2008, 08:30 AM
Ho Goro. 1st nice to see you here. You have a great start as usual. I prefer version D, I think the litle hat is weird. Maybe A if you absoltuely need a hat.

11 November 2008, 09:04 AM
Really sweet concept ! good luck Goro ;)

11 November 2008, 09:29 AM
Hmmm...I really like the sleeves and neckline of C, but the rest of D is lovely. Her face is so cute! I wish I looked like that. :scream: I really like the crinoline-over-taffeta look of the skirt in B though...

Keep going. :deal:

11 November 2008, 09:37 AM
To me I like the steampunky look of the A and the yellow touches of the dress of D.

11 November 2008, 09:40 AM
No no , I don't hate you :) Thanks for your comments on my thread. I'm working on it and you was right about many points.

"D" for sure far from the others design :) Cute and calling a contrasting mix between dysney mind picture and steampunk design. But white big dress remind me "mariage"
Beautifull sketch ;)

11 November 2008, 12:33 PM

11 November 2008, 12:51 PM
This has a nice Disney touch to it! I like it a lot!

- Chris

11 November 2008, 12:58 PM
I like dress D, lovely hair too. She looks very much like a fairytale princess.
You can use the other dresses for her ugly sisters :)

11 November 2008, 01:34 PM
I think i prefer D too ;)

11 November 2008, 02:27 PM
Looking good, Goro! As for the Cinderallas (would the plural be Cinderellai?) the one that works the least well, imho, is A because the hat feels overpowering. Of course, I never really cared for the silly fashion of the teensy hat as in B, but it is accurate and screams steampunk... I just think it looks silly. As for C & D, I love the gears used in the hair style! I think using the goggles as a hair-tie as in C is really clever and cute, but I find the asymmetrical bangs on D much cuter than the chopped bangs of B & C. So no definitive answer, just a bunch of subjective thoughts.
Oh, and thanks for the really helpful suggestions in my thread!

11 November 2008, 03:27 PM
D is my favorite :)

And I LOVE your pumpkin design! But the next one you are planing to do may be even better, so no complains from me ;)

11 November 2008, 06:28 PM
those sketches are really cool! like others i also vote for D :)

11 November 2008, 07:42 PM
Thanks all! D is kind of my favorite too. I will do a more detailed version of her later on.

Good point. I didn't like that about A either.

I guess I will combine C and D I think the sleeves and the neckline make her definitely
more elegant and fragile.

I might do different colored dresses too. Thanks!

Yeah hehe...well I think I'll take a shot without the sisters...or maybe I'll include them...
not sure yet...

11 November 2008, 01:11 AM
Not you again. Welcome back again Goro. I will be in here frequent to see what your up to. Later, always inspiring to see you work.

11 November 2008, 01:46 AM
NICE........, actually i like B, but i guess the poling has closed, hahaha, anyway, nice gown concept dude, love it all :)

11 November 2008, 07:34 AM
not late at all. I will do another pass on the cinderella. So any suggestions ideas are welcome. The A,B,C,D was to find a base I can work on.
But I might try some exaggerated crazy hairstyles as well...

11 November 2008, 08:32 AM
wow this is turning out to be a really kick-ass concept, man. I cant wait to see this finished

11 November 2008, 01:46 PM
looking good :) very disney tho...kinda

looking forward to see the rest of the scene :)

11 November 2008, 12:32 AM
good luck monkey boy! :D

11 November 2008, 12:53 AM
Goro: But I might try some exaggerated crazy hairstyles as well...
Pressed to see:deal:.:D.Great loose, zen feeling in your lines man!
Maybe Exagerating the style just a lil bit more can be cool indeed.

A bit late too but I'll say D with a hat and googles.Love hats:D

11 November 2008, 05:11 AM
Great stuff so far!! Your work is always so delightful and charming. I'm especially fond of that fairy godmother concept. That's pretty darn awesome.

Good luck with the challenge. I'll be keepin' an eye on your progress.

11 November 2008, 08:16 AM
Lovely work as always :) I think they all work in their own way. But exaggerating a bit would be a good idea, as point out yourself.

11 November 2008, 08:48 AM (

Time to decide which hairstyle it's going to be. E is the same concept as the D from my last post. I tried to exaggerate the hairstyle a little bit more. Let me know which one you like best. Also let me know which of the necklaces and earrings you like.
I want to find the final cinderella with this sheet and I might paint a final concept of her later on.

Next step is to develop the pumpkin coach. I already have an picture in mind see if I can bring it to paper...

11 November 2008, 09:35 AM
I think i prefer E but others are cool too ;)

11 November 2008, 02:37 PM
sorry Goro, I'm late. Good to have you here again!

11 November 2008, 10:18 PM
I tend to use B hairstyle, B necklace, B earring...

but not sure yet.
Need your opinions :)

11 November 2008, 10:33 PM
b head, b neck, d earring

11 November 2008, 10:52 PM
Nice concepts :) If I should choose, it would be: A hairstyle, B necklace, B earring.

11 November 2008, 11:00 PM
hey goro really nice work you have one up till now!

i personally would go for a hairs a neclace and c earrings.

youve already got a necklace similar to a on the dress concept (which is really pretty) and i find it works really well

11 November 2008, 02:11 AM
I also like the B hairstyle best. And for the necklace and earings, I like both the A options. But they are all lovely and interesting.

11 November 2008, 05:17 AM
The sketches are adorable. :) Can't wait to see more.

11 November 2008, 10:16 AM (

Cinderella character design done! I went with B,B,B thanks everyone for your opinions!

I added gear patterns to her dress. (thnx Kory for the suggestion!)

Next stop...Pumpkin Coach...or..castle...
let's see ;)

11 November 2008, 11:02 AM
hey goro good luck on this challenge, I remember the sketches you did on the last one! You ve got great talent man! I ll be watchng your thread closely

11 November 2008, 11:14 AM
that's awesome.good luck:wavey:

11 November 2008, 11:42 AM
I love it Wohoooo:thumbsup:

11 November 2008, 12:24 PM
You made the ight choices Goro, she's great!!!
Maybe some touch of red elsewhere to remind her collar.
I Like the bleuish tones in cinderella's concept, smooth & soft.

11 November 2008, 12:41 PM
Sweet modeling!

11 November 2008, 12:57 PM
Sweet and still punky. My deepest respect :)

11 November 2008, 01:14 PM
Cinderella is looking really great. I love the little cog pattern on her dress. :)

11 November 2008, 01:33 PM
Nice looking concepts here. I always admired your work.
Great choice with the hair on Cinderella. You rarely see imaginary ones with a fringe.
Usally it's everything else exept with a fringe I feel^^

good luck man. Can't wait to see it done! *two thumbs up* =D *yeah!*

11 November 2008, 02:46 PM
I think I like this Cinderella even better than the original :bounce:

11 November 2008, 03:53 PM
very nice color palette and cute design
first i had some problems with gear wheels in the hair
it looks like lemon slices :) but in the new one with some more detail
they are gone ... iam watching and prepared for awesomeness

11 November 2008, 05:58 PM
absolutely beautifull, can't wait to see the next stop :)

11 November 2008, 09:33 PM
Thanks everyone! I'm glad you like her. Now I feel comfortable to move on!

Good call! I'll think about that...maybe a bracelet ....or even an element of the slippers....
Well I'll see what I can do ....just realized I still need a design for the slipper ^^;

11 November 2008, 06:02 AM
this is getting better n better!! :bounce: cinderalla looks looooooooovely!! the pumpkin coach will be just as good! all the brass .. the gears .. the steam .. bring it on mate!

11 November 2008, 07:26 AM
Very cool indeed! I can see this being another winning entry. :D I particularly like the gears on the dress (as someone said before). I know I'm way too late to vote, but I like the E hairstyle and the A necklace (we want to STEAMPUNK this thing out, after all).

May I make a little suggestion? To push it further that this is really Cinderella, how about having her glass shoe peeking out from under her dress? You could have the heel being a spring- that way she'd have a 'bounce' in her step, hehe..

Side note: While googling for the above pic, I came across this fascinating legend: Funny, eh?

Anyway! I love how it's developing and as usual I love the inimitable goro style....:wip::arteest:

11 November 2008, 10:00 AM
Your Cinderella image is absolutely superb. Bravo!

11 November 2008, 10:24 AM
Hey Goro,

Your designs for this Cinderella are awesome, and the style your going for is looking great! Only suggestion if would prolly add ( Might been brought up already ) is to add a bracelet or the slipper to her.. but other than that great work !

11 November 2008, 11:00 AM
Your sketch is really fabulous. It's a superb cindirella ;)

11 November 2008, 02:12 PM
just lovely Goro :) if it isnt too late, I have one more suggestion for the pretty lady.. since its a steampunk era, I was thinking of some heavier canvas clothes or details here and there on this soft evening dress.

here I found some cool refs if they will help..

just my homble opinion ofcors :) keep up the great work!

11 November 2008, 05:06 PM
Last concept look great for the face, and too simple for the other part. But if you preview lot of poeple around with advanced design, this simplicity could be a way to show how she is pure and innocent. Good job on the speedpainting ; you always get a great color contrast.

11 November 2008, 08:31 PM
I'm looking forward to seeing how you do this. Your drawings so far are showing a very interesting theme. Good luck..not that I think you need it.

11 November 2008, 06:03 PM
Everybody thanks for your feedback!!

Hehe interesting stuff! Maybe I'll do a seperate sheet
for the slippers later. I'll be working on the coach for now

thnx well I mentioned exactly those two things in my last post :)

Thanks for the link but this is actually the direction I didn't want
to go. It can easily look dark and gothic which I don't want.
I think I'll stick with the classic victorian style.
She has to stand out anyways. I think she will fit well in the
steampunk scenario I have in mind.

11 November 2008, 06:23 PM
Awesome! Nice style and coloring too:)
Victorian feel with steampunk style really fits well with each other, cheers :applause:

11 November 2008, 06:29 PM
man it is great - I love your style

11 November 2008, 08:10 PM
my bad Goro :) I've should of read everything so I'd know what u r aiming for :) keep up the good work!

11 November 2008, 08:40 AM (

I decided to put a little twist in the story. I was talking to my cube mate today about the pumpkin design. Since it has to be something special I thought about a floating coach pulled by steampunked horses. As we went on talking about it I mentioned that a zeppelin would be cool but it's too big for just one person, and he went
"you air balloons have the shape of a pumpkin". BINGO!
That was exactly what I needed. Since balloons are a typical steampunk element it fit's perfectly in the scenario and it is indeed something special. Not just a steampunked coach.
Cinderella will be the only one arriving with a hot air balloon. So no horses! Just a pumpkin balloon!
So here my first concept for the balloon.

11 November 2008, 08:58 AM
The hot air balloon is cool but I 'd suggest keeping the horses. I think it's funnier and more original cause its a kind of a paradox, you know, a balloon being carried by horses. Here's another idea: What about making the carriers Seahorses? Metallic steampunky floating seahorses. I think that would be really special and magical. Cheers Goro, your entry is very inspiring!!

My steampunk (

11 November 2008, 09:26 AM
hey hey I like the balloon idea/concept!

You could keep the horses, make them something like metal, magical steampunk ornaments/statues (like those in front of Sail ships)

Just an idea :)

11 November 2008, 09:36 AM
HEy Goro,

This stuff is looking awesome... I'm psyched to see how this comes along!

11 November 2008, 12:54 PM
Or have the horses hanging down, completely useless, their little legs dangling in the air...heh...:D

Really like the sketches, particularly the 'lace netting' thing you have going on there, it blends in very well with the overall aesthetic. :arteest:

11 November 2008, 02:59 PM
Or have the horses hanging down, completely useless, their little legs dangling in the air...heh...:D

:applause: exellent idea Paperclip ! ( but I think it's not serious for the contest )

Good idea Goro for the balloon.

11 November 2008, 04:45 PM
Will the balloons be orange?

11 November 2008, 04:49 PM
Hi Goro, the lady is gorgeous  and the baloon`s design is verry cool, bravo!

I`m looking forward to see your next images

11 November 2008, 04:54 PM
Thanks guys! Glad you like the idea!

thanks for your suggestion. Seahorses sound fun but I think then it's too much.
The silhouette would be hard to read if I add horses. Another reason
to leave them out is that I'm running out of time already. I have still too many
things to take care about.

Nice one. I'll think about it. You mean like decoration right?

Thanks! :P

I thought about sometheing similar to my first pumpkin concept. So white with golden
ornaments and stuff? But I might try different colors too. Pumpkin orange is
definitely an option but I think white would be more elegant...
I'll make a color key so I'll figure out what would suite best.

11 November 2008, 05:47 PM
Goro, gorgeous work so far. I'd recommend going with the white and gold pumpkin balloon. It will fit the look of the dress and the fantastical part of the story. Leave the horses out of it all together. In this era steam and the engine are replacing horses, follow that through and concentrate on gadget-ing it out.

11 November 2008, 06:30 PM
Those are some good looking drawings ! I have to subscribe to this tread!

11 November 2008, 08:33 AM
Nice one. I'll think about it. You mean like decoration right?

Yeah, something like this ( :)

11 November 2008, 08:47 AM (

Here are two color variations of the pumpkin balloon. (day and night time)
Let me know which one you like better. The top decoration of the balloon will be gold in both versions.

11 November 2008, 08:53 AM
thought so. Thnx for the link!

11 November 2008, 09:47 AM
Beautifull scene and painting , looks already as a finishing illustration.

so , about my taste :
if night scene > white
if day light > orange

the 2 looks good in those settings.

11 November 2008, 10:37 AM

I was thinking the exact oppostite:D

I love the blue rim light on the orange at night, and the blue fill light on the white at day:)

If i was leaning on one, it would be the blue and orange as it's a nice complimentary colour scheme.

I'd like to add that the whole of this thread is awesome too. Great to see you in another challenge Goro.

11 November 2008, 11:08 AM
I´m with Deevad. I would say night scene with white. Love the work you're doing Goro.

11 November 2008, 11:56 AM
I would go with the night scene.Looks more magical. To bad for those nice drawn clouds ;). For the color I would go with orange one. Allthought I do prefer the white one in all it's serinity the link with an actual pumpkin is "easier" made with the orange one. Either way it sure is gone look good!

11 November 2008, 12:04 PM
Talent ... Keep movin Goro I'm sitting here to see the update

11 November 2008, 12:14 PM

Quoted for exact agreement.

11 November 2008, 02:43 PM
Love the white one—if I were a girl, and had a fairy godmother who magic'd me a white dress, I'd insist on a matching (virtuously) white balloon.

Day or night, go with white.

11 November 2008, 02:49 PM
i agree that night scene is more magical.
Orange or white.. I guess if it's a pumpkin it should be blue tho I feel it's more steampunk if it's white. Mm.. tough decision. I'ld say white. I like the white contrast with the night sky.

11 November 2008, 05:03 PM
So it will definitely be a night scene. But I also wanted to figure out how they
would look at daylight.

Thanks for your feedback everyone. Seems like the majority is for white since it will be
night time. I like the white one better too. I'm not sure yet how much of the balloon
you will see in the final painting. Have to work on the story and figure out a good
composition for it.

11 November 2008, 05:07 PM
you amazes me, Mr Fujita. The way you uses color is so nature. always drives me into fantasy land. Great progress as usual!

11 November 2008, 05:22 PM
I looooove the night one (number 4)...such a magical color scheme!

11 November 2008, 03:54 PM
Thanks, I decided to do another variation of the balloon.
It will be a side view so you can see all elements on the balloon.
Next update probably after the thanks giving weekend ^^

12 December 2008, 01:03 PM
Hi Goro, I prefer white. Hope to see more soon.

12 December 2008, 01:36 PM
The white version of the balloon works better for me.

Looking forward to your next updates :)

Best wishes,

12 December 2008, 04:06 PM
Well... i think that the contrast between orange and blue makes me go for the orange ballon..
i look cool.. and maybe if the ballon is not going to be a big part of the cmposition.. u might want to give that contrast so people can actually see it.. and avoid it to go unnoticed...

anyway.. your doing a great job.. keep at it :applause:

12 December 2008, 04:46 PM
Orange!! Love your work Goro, can´t wait to see this image finished!!!

12 December 2008, 05:00 PM
Goro, make it Orange! its true that the white one pops better in the night scene, but...

dont forget u can mimik the scatter of the orange baloon with a little balon flame, so the color
will make a better contrast (figure read) in your image, not only by value, by complementary color to!.-...

good, luck, nice as allways Goro.

12 December 2008, 05:11 PM
Orange, no doubt, Mr. Goro. My points:

makes a lot better contrast in both day and night versions (and the rimlight of "night" is beautiful).
pumpkins are orange, so it adds to a more straightforward storytelling, it is more "autodefined" (if that word means something)
white adds more to the "magic kingdom" look, orange adds to the stemapunk.
But maybe inthe whole composition white may work better. We'll see in andvance.
You work great Mr. Goro, is a real honour to follow your WIP, thanks!

12 December 2008, 03:47 PM
good you started sooner this time!. good luck. looking damn good the small bites you posting.

12 December 2008, 05:54 PM
Thanks for your opinions everyone. I'm working on another balloon at the moment.
I will do a lineup of all versions with a neutral background.
Personally I still think that the white balloon fit's best in the final image since I will be using
warm against cool light and it would look great on a white surface. Anyways, hope to be able to show the balloon variations by tomorrow...

12 December 2008, 06:12 PM
This is a fantastic concept! I will definitely be keeping an eye on this one.

12 December 2008, 07:58 PM
Thats some balloons Goro,

I love the day scene more then night ones, also both white and orange work, to do hard to pick one or the other, amazing concepts man! cheers!

steampunk(illustration) (

12 December 2008, 08:14 PM (

Do you know how difficult is it to choose....

both are so sweet!

The white gives almost a Xmass feeling to the image and it is more pleasant and soft
while the orange is more warm and alive...( i will look another half hour this ...

.....errrr..the white..:D

P.S ; My wife says white...she has better taste than me too:D

12 December 2008, 11:41 PM
Heh, white does seem like a great choice, but orange is so much more interesting :P

12 December 2008, 07:58 AM (

Here are the balloons from side view.
I added another variation. I like the striped one but still I tend to use the white...what do you think?
I will post some quick thumbs in a minute to show you what kind of color palette and what kind of composition I'm aiming for...

12 December 2008, 08:03 AM (

I want to visualize the moment she looses the slipper. This is just brainstorming ideas for camera angles and composition.
I think in this color palette the white balloon works best. If the pumpkin is orange it will compete against the orange light coming from the castle...(still have to design the castle...)

But still I really like to hear your opinions on the new versions of the balloon. A B or C? Thanks!

12 December 2008, 08:50 AM

But still I really like to hear your opinions on the new versions of the balloon. A B or C? Thanks!

I think you should go with baloon A (it has that warm feeling again 'cuase you have the orange net around it :)...especially if you plan to do one of the shots in your last post (i especially like the be honest)

Dimi. :bounce:

12 December 2008, 03:30 PM
i think that the third composition works better.. the one where the camera is very close to the ballon.. and in that one.. i think any ballon would work.. but providing that there's the orange light coming out of the castle.. i agree u shoul go white :P

My pick is now: ballon A

good work

12 December 2008, 03:41 PM
I like the third one too.
It allows to focus more on the characters... and is more elliptical. You can see the balloon showing very little of it, and i think it adds to a stronger storytelling. And the characters can be more dramatic and expressive.
I found the views from the sky very appealing also, but distant and cold. The added bonus of the first is view of the clock. But i still prefer the third.
This is turning out wonderful. One of my favourites!

12 December 2008, 03:44 PM
oh, and one thing more. You're right Mr. Goro, with this settings and this lighting i go with the white balloons!

12 December 2008, 04:27 PM
oh well, if u gonna use a warm orange color for light then is much better the white one..

Go GORO GO A A hurra rra!

12 December 2008, 08:12 PM
Hi Goro, great image you are developing here, as always ;)
I agree that white one works better, but I liked the striped one too, maybe you could make the orange stripes thiner so that they don't compete so much against the castle light... anyway so much discussion and in your last composition the balloon can't be seen hehe

good luck Goro!

12 December 2008, 08:43 PM
I vote #3 (or is that #c?) on both. Composition-wise, the third image shows the character best. A high-overhead camera depersonalizes the scene more. Balloonwise, the orange one refers back to the story about the girl going to the ball in a pumpkin. The white versions get away from that: her mode of conveyance is just a balloon. For me, the all-orange design is the only one that really references the original story effectively. (That being said, I think the white one is very pretty and works with your palette composition better.)

p.s. thanks for the always-insightful comments on my thread!

12 December 2008, 05:09 AM
Thanks for the input everyone!

Thanks! I will do more variations of the composition.

Thanks for your feedback! I'm still wondering how to fit all
elements in the picture. The clock is important but I like the lower
angle better too. Well I'll see what I can do about it :)

Thanks. I will definitely think about it.

Thanks for the input! In the disney version of cinderella the coach is white too...
so I think it would work well. Kory suggested to put more leaves and vines as
decoration on the balloon. That might work well.
I agree about the third thumb...but still not satisfied with it. Maybe I'll go more
wideangle....I'll work on the compositions for now before designing the castle and
the prince....I think it makes more sense that way.

P.S. it's superfun to follow your thread and how you keep improving your
drawing! I really enjoy pushing you to the limits ^^ waiting for your next update man! :P

12 December 2008, 07:47 PM
It's so much fin looking trough your progress!
Man, your good :applause:

I think you should go for the full orange ballon.
And in your 3'rd thumbnail (best one I think)where everything is close up, the orange balloon wouldent steel much of the attention anyway since it's is not really showing much
But I think I would like to see just a little bit more of it so we get the idea that it is round and shaped like a pumkin (or maybe you could find a way to throw in a cast shadow of the baloon to reveal it's shape some how..)

That "basket thingy hanging under ballon" is white as well as cinderellas dress anyway.
So you allready have plenty of nice whites for the composition.

The orange ballon is probably gonna be darker and more desaturated compared to the light coming from the castle? So I don't think it really would compete that much

=D Good luck Goro Gorilla face man

12 December 2008, 09:46 PM
Hi Goro,
great presentation of the designs.
I think that the 3rd camera works best. But it would be probably better if you lower the camera and make the angle wider with that specific curved distortion (you know, just as if the scene was observed by a rabbit)

12 December 2008, 11:32 AM
 I lovem all ! :wavey:

12 December 2008, 12:42 PM
i pick b. great idea and balloon is better than carriage

Hi Goro!
Been a while.
personally I prefer "B" as for the balloon design on it's own.
But it's difficult to say as I don't really know what importance the balloon will have in the final pic.
Increasing the balloons decoration is a nice idea.
As you're in colder bleuish/purple tones with orange lights, the balloon will already compete with the orange lightsources as he gets the light from there. So maybe it could be cool to try a third incoming color to contrast on the balloon..
Just some thoughts ofcourse.
Huge work as usual!

12 December 2008, 06:48 PM
I choose the ballon A also ...

ANd i have to say that i really like where you are going with this image ;)

12 December 2008, 02:39 PM
I like your concept. I wanted to run with a fairy tale myself at first.

I'd prefer the orange balloon. Because leather, brown and darker colors are just more steampunkish imo. Thats why I don't like the weddingdress of cinderella she should become darker too. And more oil and steam please :) :)

Happy new year!

01 January 2009, 11:36 PM
I love your side views of the balloon, it looks so elegant. You've done quite a bit of previs on this, and it all looks lovely just by itself!

01 January 2009, 04:55 PM (

Last week I found out that I was looking at the wrong deadline....I thought I would have time until the beginning of february. Since I'm in crunch time at work I didn't have much time to work on my entry and I thought that it would be hard to finish this thing until February. Now the deadline is tomorrow...I don't think that I will manage to finish up my entry but I will try my best.
So this is the composition I'm working on right now.

Another thing I wanted to share is a soundtrack my brother composed for my entry. He was inspired by my paintings and decided to compose music for it. He imagined a camera move starting from above the castle, going through the village ending in the factory where cinderella is working, dreaming about a better life. I think it's pretty amazing.

my thread doesn't get updated somehow...

01 January 2009, 11:50 PM
Yeah, the updating is kinda screwed up... hopefully, we won't experience any problems when submitting the finals... :/
Too bad you misjudged the deadline (me too, btw), but maybe you can still manage to finish something :)
The music is really sweet! Fits prefectly and sounds very pro!

01 January 2009, 02:49 AM way I can finish it...architecture and tech takes way too much time...
to bad. Good luck on your entry! It's coming along nicely.

01 January 2009, 02:56 AM
i had similar problems with updating. i had to empty my cookies and then my next post went in correctly.

best of luck if you intend still intend to keep going with this somehow.

01 January 2009, 02:56 AM
they just pushed the deadline. you still wanna give it a try?

01 January 2009, 04:48 PM
I might...
7 days is not much cause I won't be able to work on it during the week but
I'll try.

01 January 2009, 12:36 AM
Hi Goro,

I'm in the same situation as you ; I don't know why my mind wrote the end in february instead of this month. I misjudged the deadline !
7 days to complete an artwork with full time job and a full week-end will be hard ; I've got the same setup on my week.
I will try too !
Good luck ;)

01 January 2009, 01:51 AM (

Whew...finally weekend.
Started adding details. Hope that I can finish it in the next two days...

01 January 2009, 02:06 AM
ahaa, great that you are still planning to finish! I envy you people who can paint that good and specially that fast, good luck for these last 2 days! :buttrock:

01 January 2009, 05:07 AM (

Moving on!
I might be able to finish this thing!
Now working on the details.

01 January 2009, 03:20 PM
damn. your speed scares me!
I wish you good luck! 8 hours left.

01 January 2009, 03:43 PM
Keep going Goro, I admire your work as usual.

01 January 2009, 09:10 PM
Even though not finished it already looks great. I hope on a last minute entry from you :)

01 January 2009, 11:25 PM
Would be really cool if you'd finish this piece Goro :wip:

01 January 2009, 11:38 PM (

Whew that was close!
I'm finally done! I didn't think I can make it. Since I have a few minutes to is the story!

Cinderella, daughter of a wealthy pipe manufacturer, grew up in the loving care of her family until her mother died when she was six. Her father grieved for 7 years until he fell in love again with another woman, Lady Tremaine, who had 2 daughters of her own, Anastasia and Drizella. They married, but only half a year later Cinderellas father passed away as well, leaving Cinderella and all her fathers wealth and possessions in the care of her stepmother.
Lady Tremaine was a hard and cold woman. She doesnt care much for Cinderellas grief and makes her do hard work in the pipe factory shortly after her fathers death. The two daughters of her own get to be Cinderellas superiors and they use every opportunity they can find to make her life a living hell.

Now only a few houses away from the pipe factory is a giant powerplant that provides electricity for the whole city. It made its owner, Albert, one of the most powerfull and richest people in the entire city. He is a honorable and loving man that cares a lot for his famiy. And when his son returns home after fighting for his country far away in the south he asks him to find a wife so that he can be sure that there will be a heir to inherit all that he has built-up.
But Victor, his son, was gone for a long long time and he is unsure how he should find a woman since all the women he knew were married already or they had already forgotten about him.
So his father decides to arrange a ball to which he would invite all the young unmarried women from the city.

Of course Cinderella would have loved to go to the ball as well, but she doesnt have a dress to wear. And since her stepmother inherited all the money of her father, she decides to ask her if she could help her out.
But Lady Tremaine only laughs at her plea. There would be no way she would ever catch the attention of Victor, she said. Lots of girls that were much more beautiful than her would come to the ball as well. She tells her to stop daydreaming and continue with her work.

So on the night of the ball Cinderella has to stay in the factory all on her own, while Anastasia and Drizella get to take the whole day off to get ready for the big celebration that is about to happen. But suddenly, while she's sweeping the floor with tears in her eyes, a bright flash of light makes her look up. An old woman in dirty clothes and with a glowing wand in her hand appears infront of her. She introduces herself as fairy godmother and tells her that she shouldnt cry. She would help her to make it to the ball in time and she wouldnt need to worry about a thing. And without further ado she conjures up a gorgeous dress and turns an old pumpkin that was lying on the floor into a beautiful hot-air balloon which would take her directly to the ball. She adds that the magic would only last until midnight, so she had to hurry. And before Cinderella could reply there was another bright flash of light and the fairy was gone.
Cinderella cant believe her luck. She swiftly puts on the dress and gets into the balloon.

Meanwhile at the ball Albert is getting dispaired of his son. Because even though all the most beautiful girls of the city are there, his son refuses to chose any of em. But then Cinderella enters the room and Victor falls in love with her on first sight. He asks her to dance with him and him and Cinderella have the times of her life. She completely loses track of time though and suddenly realizes that its almost midnight. She tells Victor that she really enjoyed her time with him but that she has to leave now. Victor tries to stop her and chases after her out of the ballroom as she's running away. He isnt able to catch up and once outside all that he can find of her is one of her slippers that she dropped.

He spends the rest of the night trying to match the slipper to the women at the ball, but none of their feet fit. He continues his search all through the next weeks until finally he finds Cinderella in the last of all places he would look, the pipe factory. And even though she doesnt look as pretty as she did in her dress on that night he instantly recognizes her beauty and asks her to marry him.

She agrees and they live happily ever after.

Thanks everyone for your support. Especially Kory Heinzen who kept inspiring me!
Also big thanks to Stephan Stoelting for translating the story since I ran out of time!
