At that price I seriously wonder how much better it is. I've seen the specs but with a lesser Quadro I'm not feeling like my workflow is hurting speed-wise.

I don't think its really about speed, its about the added memory. This would be used in a lot of realtime applications where there are dense models and textures that have to be loaded into the card's memory. Although in the end it would equate to speed as there is less loading of those resources.

dont worry, i'm sure the affordable gforce equivalent is probably around the corner.

Not sure but the specs make it look like a GTX 280 w/ 4 gb of ram:shrug:, and actually the memory bandwidth appears to be a bit faster in the 280 too...nvidias spec sheets are really going to crap too BTW or at least they sure aren't making them as easy to find.

Yes it's based on the GTX 280, only with a 4Gb memory amount.

isn't that the case with most of the cards. the gforce and quadors are not that different at all.

Yes, it's a GTX280, but a 55nm refresh, because it has a 189 W TDP
The GTX280 is built on a 65nm production process and has a roughly 230W TDP. In Q1 2009 a refresh of the GTX280 on 55nm will apear, with probably a 189 TDP, and the FX5800 is based on that.
Smaller process = lower consumption and cooler card.
