I'm planning to do a 3D piece based on the Norse Godesses the Norns. At the moment my plan is to have them working the thread of life on a steam loom with the world tree (ygdrassil) being the boiler.

I decided to roughly model the steam loom first. This is because the position of the loom, and the location of the belt wheel which powers it effects the position of the rest of the machinery in the image. I need to know what I'm dealing with in terms of the space it takes up, in order to come up with a good image composition.
I will add more details to the loom later, I've just modelled some of its key features for now to make sure I can get a good angle on it in shot.
The threads I'll create using transparency maps at the texturing phase.
3D Pre viz to follow next.

Quick background notes on the three nord godesses
Urd spins the thread of life, Verdandi winds the thread, and Skuld cuts it off. Fates of men are carved into a piece of wood. The norns will care for Yggdrasil until the day of Ragnarok, the day of the end, by mixing the water from the Well of Wyrd with sand and spreading it on the tree. On Ragnarok, the Earth will be torn apart during a battle between the gods and the giants, taking Yggdrasil along with it.
Urd is the oldest - always looking back into the past. Pictures show her as an old woman.
Verdani is young - only concerned with now. In visual records, she is always the young and beautiful sister.
Skuld is covered by a veil and sometimes holds a tightly bound book or scroll, since the future is not for anyone but her to know.

Rough render of the Concept. I've used the Anzovin demo rig as substitutes for the Godesses

May go for a tighter composition. Move Urd upstairs holding a box of bobbins for Verdandi and drop the well of wyrd, the spinning jenny and the furnace at the base of the tree from the scene. Yggdrassil needs a few more branches too.

GOT IT. The tree is to be the star of the image.
I feel that no matter how much effort I put into sculpting the goddesses, and clothing/detailing them in a Steampunk style the image would not be interesting or dramatic enough.
I was originally going to make the tree out of Brass anyway, now I've decided to make it a whole pile of Steampunk in a tree shape. A pile of pipes, cogs and twisted metal heaped up in a tree shape to form Yggdrasil.
So, I'll do that next.
