Latest Update: Final Image: King Midas (

11 November 2008, 02:51 PM (

I'm sure you all know the story of king Midas. He turned everything he touched into gold (or something else :)

These are my first thumbnails just to get a pitcure about the feeling of the final image...

King Midas - composition analysis

11 November 2008, 12:29 PM (

second thumbnail - after composition fixes

11 November 2008, 08:40 PM (

I decided to open up the space in the background, so I had to design a colum that fits to the world, but it can keep the background quite 'clean'...

11 November 2008, 02:26 AM (

well... the opend up background with the columns... time to do something with the main theme...

11 November 2008, 02:20 PM
good luck and good work.
hajrá hajrá;)

11 November 2008, 01:17 PM (

a little figure-research...

12 December 2008, 09:35 PM (

I didn't find the composition ballanced enough in the pitcure, so I decided to change a bit in the camera angle... Therefore I designed the basics in 3D. If I use a camera angle like this, every minor mistake becomes really visible...

composition, figue and structure fixes...

12 December 2008, 02:52 PM (

colour research

12 December 2008, 03:30 PM
hey. that is a really nice idea you have there. and the development as well. i can already imaging it looking awesome. The Prussian helmet (?) looks better

12 December 2008, 04:31 PM
Great stuff! The angle really is good...good luck!

12 December 2008, 04:53 PM
THX! I'm trying, I'm trying... :)

12 December 2008, 05:20 PM
That green-blue color looks splendid, with the golden metal of the gears it could
do very good contrast. nice composition also. keep it in!

12 December 2008, 06:54 AM (

work in progress - color, lighting....
It's not easy if I have two so different lightsources and a material that reflects both of them...

12 December 2008, 08:36 PM (

work in progress - new colors and elements...

12 December 2008, 10:32 PM
Hey Kamen,

Very original idea and like a lot your concept sketches :D Your WIP´s are looking really great, the composition is very nice and really cool lighting mood. Good luck and looking forward for more updates! Cheers !!

12 December 2008, 10:47 PM
Well thanks Fernando, I'll try to do my best... I wish good luck for you too! :)

12 December 2008, 11:10 PM
Very nice work. The secondary figures look a bit too static though, shouldnt they be at least reacting to what they're seeing? Some are fleeing, and maybe one or two actually caught up and being transformed.

12 December 2008, 11:22 PM
well... I should admit, it is not yet obvious enough, but they are the gods watching what king Midas wished for himself.. That's why the rules of light(ning) and space doesn't really "touch" them.. I hope It will be more obvious later on :)

12 December 2008, 04:32 PM (

still lot to do....

12 December 2008, 06:43 PM (

I decided to change the colors once again....

12 December 2008, 09:33 AM
Not sure I like this new scheme. There's very little contrast in colours, and the ones that do are still heavily towards the red side of the spectrum.

12 December 2008, 10:05 AM
well... I should say you're right... something is really bad with the lightning... maybe I should put the whole scene to an open field, to get some natural light...

12 December 2008, 10:30 AM
Well in the previous two I think you had the right idea. The gears are throwing off the brightest colours, and you have secondary colours for the background and unaffected areas, and the uniforms and decorations threw in more splashes that helped bring the image out.

The only problem with your latest is that it looks monotonous.

12 December 2008, 02:43 PM (

After a long-long suffering :) I decided to change the whole image... I keep the story, I keep the subject, but I change almost everything else... there were lots and lots of problems with the previous images... no freshness, bad colours, too much details etc.

So here we are now...

12 December 2008, 02:44 PM (

and the picture right now..

12 December 2008, 08:59 PM
this is great O_O

12 December 2008, 07:45 PM (

The composition had some ballance - problems, so I had to change it a bit...

12 December 2008, 07:50 PM
and I forgot... Thanks Kevin!! :)

12 December 2008, 08:03 PM
hey kam! much better than the previous one! keep on pushin`!

12 December 2008, 06:53 PM (

some advanced environment and machine detailing...

12 December 2008, 07:39 PM (

trying out a different composition...

01 January 2009, 02:28 AM (

advanced environment and lightning...

01 January 2009, 08:33 AM
I like landscape here the most,it's really detailed and well rendered.Character seems still need a little bit light on the other hand, maybe a sharp light from back could bring him more to the front.Great work :)

01 January 2009, 09:48 AM
You're picture is interesting but, maybe because I don't know the story, I had a problem of relation size between character and environment. Are these huge mountains like it seems to me ? In this case he's a giant ? Or is it more classical snow at the size of a human and in this case, I find it too detailled to understand that size.
Great work anyway, with nice details

01 January 2009, 12:25 PM (

yes... Vincent, maybe you're right... I tried to "deconstruct" the background a bit.. now it's time to finalize the figure...

01 January 2009, 02:31 PM (

updated details and colors

01 January 2009, 03:36 PM
I must admit I have a thing for snow environments, and that means I really like this! :) Looking at environment compared with the character, I would say that he is a giant.

01 January 2009, 03:43 PM
Thanks! :) maybe a giant, maybe not... For me it was only important that I show the isolation of the character in a fictional, but clean environment. On the other hand, as I planed the composition I tried to choose a wanishing line that makes the character look like a building, so it wasn't 100 percently an accident...

01 January 2009, 05:26 PM (

I decided to get rid of the background elements to keep the composition clean...

01 January 2009, 03:32 PM (

So.... the story:

Midas wished something bad from the gods... he turns everything he touches into gold... well... black gold. He is a "one-man oil company", but he doesn't want to do this job anymore.

some changes on the background...
