It's a pity you won't join the challenge, with your participation, I would have someone to blame because of his unfinished work . Even I hope i will not be the one with unfisnished work

11 November 2008, 06:11 PM
well I don`t think I can wait till I see ur concept ......hurry mate I`am dieing here :bounce: lol kidding take ur time and make us

11 November 2008, 02:12 PM
Hello everybody. Well I'm still thinking about my conept (and also finishing a image I've started before the challenge). I had many ideas : Jekyll and Hyde, Holmes and moriarty, Santa claus, the three litlle pigs, giants or cyclops. But I don't decide me.

11 November 2008, 11:04 PM (

Well, not the greatest sketch I've done. That's just to illustrate my idea. the myth is blackbeard (and pirates in general). The fact is that the scene will not take place on the sea but in the city (london like XIXe) and the boat of blackbeard will be more mechanical (to fit the steampunk style) and destroy raod with its enormous wheels helped with some steam.

Hope the final picture will have something to do with this description...

11 November 2008, 09:00 AM
nice sketch and bit funny  I like the idea ........keep going;)

Hope the final picture will have something to do with this description...
lol

11 November 2008, 10:09 PM (

I don't know what I'm doing. It's a very instintive modeling and concept, not sure it will be a success.

11 November 2008, 10:08 PM (

I wasn't really happy of my first concept so I decided to go back to my first intention : jekyll and hide

11 November 2008, 02:58 AM
I agree! , I love to see your charactor work!

11 November 2008, 10:18 PM (

Here's a quick sketch of mr hide. Hope you'll understand something. He surely would be dark in the scene with the light behind him.

11 November 2008, 09:02 AM
lol nice idea indeed can`t wait to see this comes to life

11 November 2008, 12:01 PM (

First ttempt of head of Mr hide. Everything done in zbrush, it was easier. I have start the body in xsi.

I'm also thnking about my composition, my last idea was to take place near the tamise.

11 November 2008, 03:23 PM
The idea and style looks so promising...can't wait to see more on this.

11 November 2008, 05:10 PM (

WOW. More post and wxork in 1 day than since the start of the challenge.

12 December 2008, 12:53 PM (

a quick update with some more accessories

12 December 2008, 01:30 PM
Weow! so you are in also Vincent! really great news my good old friend!

12 December 2008, 11:36 PM
Great style!

12 December 2008, 02:37 AM
Hi there! I just happen to see your post. I like your current design a lot! Can't wait to see the finished work! All the best!

12 December 2008, 06:40 AM
looks promissing already, vincent!

Can't wait to see more, keep it up!

12 December 2008, 03:02 PM (

What I tend to do, a vertical picture with jekyll at the bottom near the tamise, then the city, then hide in a sort of poster like picture

12 December 2008, 10:36 PM (

first tries of point of views

12 December 2008, 10:37 PM
right most one! more dramatic and threatening. Great design too!

12 December 2008, 08:16 AM
right most one! more dramatic and threatening. Great design too!
same thing here........... keep going :wip:

12 December 2008, 02:00 PM
right one also, but I do miss his arm. I like the fact that you can see his both arms in the last one but the composition looks beter in the right one. Perhaps a combination?
Looking good!

12 December 2008, 02:34 PM
I completely agree with Molossus above: I love the building height of the last one, but would like to see him less cropped.

Also, I've been thinking it for a while but never got around to posting it, but I really love his design: So simple and fun. Every time I even see a thumbnail of your entry, it makes me smile!

12 December 2008, 03:46 PM
Me right one too:-)
Maybe lowering the camera a tiny bit more could make it even more dramatic.
Love your design man!woww!

12 December 2008, 10:53 PM
thanks everybody for support

Okmer, walrus, mollossus, thebest, Womball : I also think the right one is the best for the moment. Anyway there will be some amleioration, especially on the pose of the robot to see the 2 arms (maybe the first part of the arm will also be shorter). for composition, I 'm still in reflexion because at first, I wanted something with less persepctive, more 2d.

12 December 2008, 11:01 PM (

Here's a quick update on the bridge. In reality it's enormous, what kind of object could I add to show the relation size ?A car maybe (but would I have time for it)

12 December 2008, 10:21 AM
was doing a search for huge bridges and found that what shows how huge the bridge is the surronding maybe this can show what I`am talking about

hope this helps a bit.........keep going

12 December 2008, 12:38 PM
hey authentic,

nice bridge design!
Allthougt I love the stones under the bridge I think they make the bridge look smaller. If the bridge would be huge those stones would be a bit smaller. just an idea.

12 December 2008, 01:00 PM
the best : thanks for the help

molossus ; I thought of making the stone smaller but I also want to keep a little cartoony style and I'm afraid to lost it if I do that. I'll see later for size because it will also depends of what the buildings beside will look like

12 December 2008, 01:11 PM
yeah that would be a risk, perhaps a tourret of two on the side could make it look bigger. Then again this could make it to "crowded" on the front.

12 December 2008, 03:59 PM
Just make the car really boxy. Or make it a cutout and draw it in in the compositing stage.

12 December 2008, 03:56 PM
really cool design man! love the boat and the big gears it crawls around on. amazing

12 December 2008, 08:42 PM (

Still a mess in my head but well, i work anyway

12 December 2008, 10:13 PM (

large compo or not, that is the question

12 December 2008, 10:29 PM
large :wip: large :wip: large :wip: large :wip:

12 December 2008, 02:50 AM
i like the large compo:) i won't want to miss his left arm :P

12 December 2008, 03:36 AM
LARGE! compo. You do not want to cover up the dynamic look of the image- right?

Keep going! :bounce:

12 December 2008, 03:57 PM (

Here are some ambiance and colorimetric tests. I wanted to do a picture in green tones which are not familiar for me, a good challenge in fact.
A : Full green picture
B : Just some red rimlignts, neutral color on robot
C : red background
D : red robot
E and F : don't matter with the upper part of the picture, it's all about the bridge. I make it clearer than in the other picture. Green for E, Red for F

12 December 2008, 06:10 PM
D and C are my favorites, B is nice too. I wouldn't stick with just one color.

12 December 2008, 08:06 PM
For me C is my favorite. I like the bridge in F as it really stands out. images/icons/icon13.gif

12 December 2008, 08:16 PM
I like this. But I think the ship was also a great concept.Maybe something for the future.

12 December 2008, 04:01 PM
Im voting for C too :applause:

12 December 2008, 01:15 AM
That 's really cool.all things is perfect.looking forward for the final image.
Btw,D is great..

12 December 2008, 09:07 PM (

It seems I 'm going to do a version more textured than I thought at first. Still in reflexion

12 December 2008, 06:56 AM
i love your robot. almost reminds me of a nightmare before Christmas... with robots!

12 December 2008, 11:42 PM (

still working

01 January 2009, 06:11 PM (

After a certain time of learning ice in xsi 7, I made the smoke comming from the top of the robot

01 January 2009, 10:26 PM (

all is in the title. Do you prefer with the fog (red at bottom, white at middle) or without ?
If you've got other commentaries, no pb.
Oh and I'll give up the smoke you've seen before because it wasn't great in the picture

01 January 2009, 11:48 PM
hey dude! i like the mist more - very londonish and a bit more scary. can't you use/show the bumpmapped eyebrows from zbrush or whatever, instead of the drawn on ones?! i think it's a funny idea and would hate to see it go to waste. i don't know your other work but i think you should go realistic or graphic - when i look at the image now it's something inbetween...
good luck! n.

01 January 2009, 04:26 AM
it adds atmosphere. Your piece is unique! Looks like Tim Burton influence! Keep up the great work!

01 January 2009, 09:56 AM
rebelakemi : thanks for your comment. Appreciate.

Archibald : The eyebrows you see are the one from zbrush but the distance is so far that they lost their volume. moreover I have forced (maybe too much) the shader to make it them more visible. i thought of rework them more in 2d but maybe I will remade them in 3d if I've got time. I think you're right about the "in between" realistic and graphic version. I think I've missed something on this picture that could have benn more stylish (but I don't know how exactly). Now I know I will not go mre realistic than that and also my time is too short to remake many things more graphic (I still have many things to add or adjust on the picture). Anyway if you got quick idea of change to make it a little more graphic, I'm listening :D.

01 January 2009, 11:00 PM (

For me that's nearly finished.Justsome minor tweaking to do and mybe some modifications in regards of your comments

01 January 2009, 01:20 AM
Its a great piece with a very nice composition and color pallete, the red and green are looking awesome!

If I can give a few sugestions, that will be to add more steam from the creature and less fog,and a little bit more texture liked you mention before. Best of luck for you on the final judgement!

01 January 2009, 01:35 AM
Wow! What a great image!
I loved the style!!!

Very good use of colors

01 January 2009, 06:32 PM
This is a really fun piece. I think the fog is good, though I'd like to see it continue on the left- seems to terminate a bit abruptly. Maybe make it a little thinner in the center. I agree that more steam coming from the monster would be cool. The only other thing is the teeth- for me they seem too simple. I'd like to see more modeling there; it looks very cartoon/2D and my eye is drawn to it with the amount of black. I think more detail there would work, without changing the mood of the piece much.

01 January 2009, 08:55 PM
Your picture is my favorite!Good luck!

01 January 2009, 09:03 PM
He reminds me of Godzilla for some reason.

The smoke was done in XSI? Was the robot rendered in it?

01 January 2009, 08:53 AM
This image reminds me of those pulpy b grade monster movies from the 50s and 60s! Perhaps adding some dust and scratches, like from an aged strip of film would add to it?

Really cool image, one of my favourites!

01 January 2009, 10:41 AM
hey Vincent

this is looking cool so far man

crits from me: push your lines more, the buildings on the left of your piece look good, but on the right they point AWAY from where u should be looking. Small tweaks I can suggest :

01 January 2009, 01:20 PM
Hi I'm currently doing some minor changes on toshop. Expect to finish it this evening.

DougFerreira : I'm lowering the fog. About steam, I'll try but with too much I find it break the composition. Thanks for comment.

fabmoraes, MaxLarin : thanks

joolz : these are good advices, I will make some changes (it was planned for the fog at the left)

Womball : the robot is made in xsi. The smoke is 2d

themightym : yes I was looking for an old film style. If it would have been authorized I would have add a title.

Martin : yes I could have bend it more for a better composition. That's a bit too late for now (don't have so much time). I will try the clouds, I have already tried something similar that didn't work but it was not on a so advanced picture.

01 January 2009, 11:09 PM
You could still bend the buildings with liquify in Photoshop. I'm currently trying out the new version of XSI as well. I will buy it someday.

01 January 2009, 09:06 AM (

Software: Digital Fusion,Photoshop,XSI

Dr Jekyll was making troubling experiences to find more about the soul . the result was the birth of Mr Hide, a terrible, giant and destructive robot. How can he stop this as Mr Hide And Dr Jekyll are the same person ?

This picture make reference with the monster movies of the 50s or 60s. I build it like a poster even I don't put any title (I don't think it was allowed, in this case I would have make it higher). As it is a poster, not a moment of action, you can see the Hide and Jekyll( in little) in the same picture.

I hope you'll like it.

Good luck to all with your own entry.

01 January 2009, 04:26 AM
yeah! vincent , glad to see your finished work! like your style from every past challenge!
and this one is really good!

01 January 2009, 07:51 PM
