Latest Update: Final Image: Blackbeard, ahoy! (

11-11-2008, 05:10 PM (

My first idea was do depic some pirat-legend-myth-ship-theme. After a short search in the net I found the legend of Davy Jones.
Seems to be interesting to me.

Well here's the placeholder :)

Hoi yako!
Nice to see taking part, I expect some great entries. :)
Viel Glück!

11-12-2008, 10:21 AM
i like it a lot, especially the steam coming from his hat.

11-12-2008, 10:34 AM
haha, geiler sketch.. wünsch dir viel glück und n sauberes bild ;)

Here are some first thoughts had about the style, some gadgets and some crewmembers. I sorry for the bad quality but that was the best i could get out of the fotos.

I focused on Blackbeard 'couse he's the maincharakter i wanted to depict. In the final illustration i also want to show his crew, some pirate-steampunk-goodies and his ship. How i put this together isnt clear yet, but there are some ideas in my head.

One of the goodies is a lamp, as seen on the right side. After this traditional and normal design, i tried a flying version with a rotor inspired by helicopterrotors.
On his shoulder will be a steampowered parrot, but this design in the middle isnt the way its gonna look like. I'll try a more stylized look, just like the characters.

In the right top corner is the claw that will replace the traditional of Blackbeard. The leg will be springloaded(? dunno if this is the right word) with some mechanical parts.
And like all those steampunkcharacters Blackbeard will have a monocle and no pirateyepatch. But still dont know how it will look like.

I'll keep on sketching. :)

hi there yakonusuke, i like your first drawing :P, hahahahaha,

well nice concept dude, i like the guy with the big cannon on the back, he looks furious hehehe, and nice style you've got there, good luck to you ;)

11-19-2008, 01:30 PM

11-19-2008, 01:41 PM
really nice concepts !
the hook needs more gears though :D

11-19-2008, 03:01 PM
Really nice character designs so far. It's not feeling very steampunk yet, except for a small section of his peg-leg... Blackbeard mostly looks traditional pirate-y. Have you thought about how to push the steampunk part of the theme more? But the character silhouettes are looking nice... good luck with the rest, and have fun!

11-19-2008, 03:30 PM
Yep Agree with Walrus.Maybe some more steampunk in the pirat.
Great sketches & lovely characters!Subscribed!
Good luck & have fun:-)

11-19-2008, 03:56 PM
Yeah, I agree with that. But its just the basement . Those few elements like the steampowered parrot on the shoulder, the hook/claw, monocle, and leg will increase the steampunk feeling , when I design and intergrate them well, I think. Also some parts of the outfit are still to empty and boring - for example the right shoulder and the pants.
But good to know what you think bout this so far. So I have more reason to work more on that.

11-19-2008, 04:04 PM
by the looks of it your working on pure awesomeness!

11-19-2008, 05:08 PM
I agree, the bearded pirate definitely needs more steampunk influence, apart from his leg and forearm he's basically you're average pirate, so maybe you could play (designwise) some more with that, good start so far though, keeping my steampunk eye on this..

11-19-2008, 09:41 PM
And it begins.:D
Good thing I already subscribed to your thread.

Yes, I have a thread, but there's nothing to see...yet.

11-19-2008, 09:50 PM

12-11-2008, 12:12 AM (

Blackbeard ( beard made of smoke )

12-11-2008, 12:24 AM (

Here's a new concept for Blackbeard.
Now he is completely a machine, but with a human hand, leg and eye. The opposite of the stereotype pirate.
Add the smoke-beard from the last post to this sketch. :)

Thanks to

for droppin me a line!

12-11-2008, 12:32 AM
please delete double post

very cool

12-16-2008, 08:03 PM
Nice update on the pirate, the character design kinda reminds me of "Long John Silver" from the 2002 Walt Disney movie Treasure Planet

Looks great! Love the palette and Blackbeard is awesome!

01-14-2009, 08:09 PM
Hey NuSuke,

super Ding!

Kleiner Tipp, um es zu vervollkommnen:

Schau mal, ob du auf den Ausdruck der Hauptfigur noch eine deutlichere Emotion zaubern kannst. Das würde ihn kraftvoller machen und seinen Charakter klarer.

Viel Erfolg!

01-15-2009, 12:36 AM (

Next Update. I've widend the canvas and added as usual more details. Still need to paint those characters in the background to fill the space.
Tell me what you thing. :)

OZ, Nigel-Q and Dekartdek: Thanks guys! I really appreciate that!

Sorry for writing in german, here's the short version:
The main point is the face of blackbeard which doesn't show any characteristics or intention. but I like that somehow mysterious look of him. What do you thing bout that?

01-15-2009, 01:10 AM
This one is starting to look great! =D Love the idea and the composition.
and wow, I really admire your rendering skills! I had to go and look at your CGportfolio..
Some really beautifull work you have done!

good luck with this one

01-15-2009, 01:32 AM
Donglu and I wish you finish on time. It's such a wonderful piece!

01-15-2009, 08:23 AM
man when I see this I wish there`d be a new Monkey Island part
looks great so far, you never disappoint in any challenge you participate

I don`t think you have to redo his complete face if you want some emotion of Blackbeard in there; eyebrows ( even when they`re mechanical) and a mouth would be enough (Denk an den schrecklichen Sven bei Wickie...)

and the claw arm needs some more love, claw itself is cool though

have fun, I know it will turn out great in the end!

01-15-2009, 10:24 PM (

Update: Lots of tweeks and some new details. It slowly becomes that what I initialy wanted to achieve.

Comlock: Hey thank you for the nice words!

JackZhang: Thanks to both of you, I won't disappoint you!

guterrez: And also thanks to you Mathias. Yeah I'll will definitly add more details and love all over the image, but first the rough work has to be done. There will also be more details and ornaments on the bressparts of his body.
For the facial-matter I will maybe make some sketches and add them to the final if the work for me.

01-17-2009, 12:42 PM

Yeah, thank you Artdek. I think you are absolutly right, so I added some personality to his face.
I turned the mysterious, unreadable Blackbeard into the raving lunatic Blackbeard! :)

01-18-2009, 12:46 PM
Wow i loved it!:wip:
That's my favourite now =)

01-18-2009, 02:01 PM

01-18-2009, 08:11 PM

Software: Photoshop

Legend tells of the most dreaded captain in the history of skyshipping. Blackbeard. But he was also nuts to the core.
As he realized that his humanbody has got weaker after long years of piracy, he decided to transform nearly all parts of it into a steampowered machine.
So he was able to keep the seven skys for hundreds of years under his control.

It was real fun to convert this theme and this character into the steampunk universe.
I hope you guys enjoyed my progress and this final. Thanks to all who helped me to develop and finish that image or just dropped by and leave a comment! Thank you!
I wish lots of luck to all of my combatants !

Best regards

Hello Jakob
some very cool concept, super character design- (the pirate is just brilliant), pro render & color choise... and you get good chance for a finalist.
The bg battle ship is a bit foggy for my taste, but nothing can ruin the party the going around in this piece,
Good luck

01-19-2009, 03:46 PM
man, you've made it! congratulations!!!

01-19-2009, 07:01 PM
Love the cartoony feel of the piece. I think it was a very good choice going with Blackbeard, especially for this kind of comic scene. Nice style, great colour and great composition. :) Good luck!

01-20-2009, 08:25 AM
just one word: wonderful!!

01-20-2009, 07:38 PM

01-21-2009, 05:19 AM
Very nice piece, the design of blakcbeard is just awesome.
my favorite picture so far.
I still think they should have separate categories for 2D and 3D...
superb work.
