Latest Update: Finished Video: Bath Or Y
11 November 2008, 11:08 AM
I have 3 myths/legends here. Writing the stories, having some brainstorming. This week is going to be about many decisions - final story, style, tools.
Good luck everyone and have fun!
11 November 2008, 01:05 PM
Hey Juraj, nice to see you in ! Give us some cool design as usual !
11 November 2008, 05:03 PM
Hi, cool to see you in! Some new fine stuff from you I expect - looking forward to see what you'll do!
11 November 2008, 07:03 AM
so you are in too! great!
we will see another great work here
cheers Jura I will look for your nice works here; ;)
11 November 2008, 10:17 AM
hey folks, thanks for nice invitation. Hope to see you on board as well!
I am still searching some resources, this topic is pretty wide open. Trying to stay away from well known Greek mythology and focus more on Slavic mythology and Slovak legends.
11 November 2008, 08:36 PM
okay, it was hard picking the one. Welcome to Slovak bloody legend - Bathory. This time "Bath Or Y(why) - The Steampunk Age".
11 November 2008, 09:35 PM
hey Juraj nice... we meet again :) .cant wait to see your unique style soon!
11 November 2008, 01:33 PM
Hey Hamid, nice to see you challenging again. Looking forward to seeing your great entry.
11 November 2008, 01:49 PM
As my research about Bathory keep progressing I found the mistake I did in my first wip post. Misinformed, I took wrong portrait to present the legend. However, the portrait by Agnolo Bronzino is much closer to the most recent movie interpretation with Anna Friel directed by Juraj Jakubisko. I should open my History Of Art book more often :)
11 November 2008, 04:33 PM
I'm so glad you chose her out of the three initial ideas :) Should be cool!
11 November 2008, 06:32 PM
Steampowered bloodbath - cant wait for it!
11 November 2008, 08:49 PM
@Intervain - by searching your portfolio (especially 2Ds) I have no doubds you are glad I picked the legend of Bathory ;) Thanks for the words.
@fgdf - yeah, you get the idea correctly but there is a little extra part missing. Anyway, happy to see you entering again.
11 November 2008, 12:00 AM
Finished the script today so i started with some concept art already, trying to find the mood and style.
11 November 2008, 11:54 AM
11 November 2008, 01:44 PM
Initial character contcepts. Feel free to vote for the one you like the most. Call it ABCDE from left to right :)
11 November 2008, 12:32 PM
personally, the one in the middle :)
11 November 2008, 04:18 PM
the middle one too ;)
Nice style btw
11 November 2008, 04:19 PM
Love the style! The middle one (c) really grabs me tho. ;)
11 November 2008, 09:40 PM
The legendary and never disovered Bathory's "iron maiden"
11 November 2008, 09:49 PM
@ Intervain, Goul, Pyke - Thanks for the votes folks. I myself was considering between the middle one and the last one. Maybe the E looks more like a vamp thanks to her prelongated face. Will see more in fullbody sketches I guess.
11 November 2008, 02:08 AM
I vote for C..... Excellent designs.
11 November 2008, 07:36 AM
Good luck man ;)
11 November 2008, 07:48 AM
I was actually going to vote for the last one, but the middle one would work fine too.
The Iron maiden concept is really cool - and as usual the way you present your steps is charming. Keep going like this!
11 November 2008, 02:17 PM
So you finally chose the Countess Bathory story. I didn't know about her but reading her story in Wikipedia gave me the creeps! I think it is a great topic to develop in a short steampunk story, she is an impressive character. I couldn't avoid thinking about Sweeney Todd with all and the myths of her bloody baths. Can't wait to see the progress. Good luck!
11 November 2008, 03:44 PM
11 November 2008, 09:47 PM
The iron maiden's extension :)
11 November 2008, 05:00 AM
Really awesome style you're developing here!
11 November 2008, 10:28 AM
@ djfilms, REZI-st, ivanisavich - Thanks!
@ Gunilla - Thanks Gunie. As I said, I will see more in fullbody sketches, so the last one always has a chance. Glad you like my wip presentation :)
@ kaparo - hey, welcome to my thread! You made me watch Sweeney Todd by Burton yesterday. I am a big fan of Burtonish world but this time I was a bit confused at the end. It was way too bloody to me. But the legend itself could feel the same as Bathory for sure.
11 November 2008, 09:29 PM
Elizabeth - prefinal character concept. She is going to have dressing gown in few shots, but that is just a minor part :) The horned thing is actually a wig, will go off too.
11 November 2008, 11:48 PM
some of your concepts id be happy with and see as finished works :p
i especially like the iron maiden
11 November 2008, 11:06 AM
Here is lil sneakpeek. Hope you folks can wait for the main screening with whole story I have based on the legend of Countess Bathory. By this legend in order to stay young she took the baths made of virgin's blood.
11 November 2008, 12:32 PM
Nice...and I think I understand what's going on in the boards...she's yelling into that metal funnel on the side of the tub that acts like an intercom when the sound travels through the pipe? I've seen those before.....and I guess she's calling for more blood :D
11 November 2008, 05:10 AM
This probably is first steampunkish model I've ever made :) I think I will go with slightly deformed objects this time.
11 November 2008, 04:48 PM
very nice progress ! Keep posting with this style and quality ;)
11 November 2008, 03:20 PM
@oneandonlyDiscoStu - glad you like it. All concepts I presented so far should be in final animation, so I hope you will see them finished.
@ivanisavich - hey Tyson, no spoilers here please  :applause:
@REZI-st - Thanks, will try to keep them both.
11 November 2008, 11:38 PM
Hey, nice start  I like the way it goes... keep it goin :bounce:
11 November 2008, 05:27 PM
mmmmmmm...nice candle... and bigfacemachine is lovely too... waiting for the lady;)
never give up!:)
11 November 2008, 10:34 PM
Bathtub almost finished. Few things are waiting for ZBrushing (dragon parts, ornament) but now it is time for the Iron Maiden!
11 November 2008, 02:08 AM
it looks very good, congratulations!!!
11 November 2008, 08:44 AM
still excellent to watch !
I love your sense of design !
11 November 2008, 04:04 PM
nice style! I hardly wait the model of the character. and nice legend too. ;)
11 November 2008, 10:10 PM
Nice story and concepts!
12 December 2008, 12:36 AM
This is a disgusting legend but in a sooo stylish and well designed way! It is really interesting how you've managed to twist it up so its design and actions looks more cartoony and so more friendly! (although a blood bath is never friendly...) simply loved the story and your designs work great... I particularly didn't like the candle because I think steampunk is not about making simple things complicated but making complicated things more complicated because of the lack of technology (only steam powered stuff) available to do it but I know that is just me...
I will follow your thread closely! very impressive job can't wait to see those pieces in motion after a good zbrushing !
12 December 2008, 11:56 AM
thanks for nice feedback. I am still working on the Iron Maiden model, should be finished in few days.
@Nomad - Thanks buddy, hope you will like it at the end of this challenge too ;)
@kacorkiraly - thanks, the lady should be around in 2 weeks. No worries about me givin' up the challenge. I hopefuly will be able to finish this one too, and maybe call it lucky "7"... errr, just counted my challenge entries. This is the 6th. So maybe lucky "6" ? That will work too :applause:
@LoboRecio - Thanks, I am glad you like it.
@gpepper - yup, still progressing. And to tell you the truth, I am always amazed by sense of design in many threads around. You challenging folks are highly talented and skilled. Lot's of learning from many of you.
@kynu - Thanks. As I said to your team member, I am about to start working on the character. Hope to be quick enough to meet my deadlines.
@Thiago-Pires - Cool, I am still working on few important parts of the story, where I want to keep the spirit of original legend. This is going to be my first "short movie", so I have to think a bit different than in all my previous action packed bits.
@Scied - Nice feedback, thanks. You know, I had to stop for a while and think about your issue with the candle and steampunk. Try to treat it as a steampunk gadget. They of course can use the regular candles as well as we are still using them in this techno-electro age. So what I made is not really a complicated candle, but a sort of "bulb" or "torch light" in a shape of the candle and candleholder. Steampunk is full of crazy gadgets without a logic of designer. It is fun at the first line to me, not really an alternative reality. Anyway, keep watching the progress. Thanks again for your constructive words.
12 December 2008, 03:28 PM
These storyboards look brilliant! Well rendered! Did they take a long time to draw each storyboard? Will you be using that low poly look you used before on the dragon in the journey begins contest?
12 December 2008, 03:52 PM
Hello. Time is ticking so I better stop working on the Iron Maiden. Next mileston should be Elizabeth - 3D character wip.
12 December 2008, 12:09 PM
that's rich dude,I totally dig the style
12 December 2008, 02:44 PM
Your style is just awesome man....just awesome!!!
12 December 2008, 03:01 PM
Very Tim Burton! I love it!
Lighting your models would be a dream. They just have such character!
12 December 2008, 02:20 PM
This is just rough 3D sketch I sculpted in oredr to see how can character concept be translated in 3D form. I am pretty happy with it so far, but going to try another version, maybe a bit sharper - less pleasant.
12 December 2008, 02:57 PM
3D sketch! Crazy! I never thought about such terms, since I always used my little old sketch book and pencil for that.
I like the environement design you made, full of personnality. Looking really sharp, keep up the good work!
12 December 2008, 03:57 PM
Damned.....Looks evil, and calm...quiete scary :bounce:
12 December 2008, 12:06 PM
@Womball - hey, welcome to my thread buddy! About the storyboards - as you can see around this video category, few folks already animating and have their character stetup etc. I did spent pretty long time to develope the story and concept design, so yeah, it wasn't fast job. Maybe not very claver for such a challenge, but hopefuly a month will be enough to put the things together in some good short. I am not going for lowpoly look as you mentioned, I will hopefuly have some stylised rendering instead this time. I canīt really experimenting in my regular job, so this is a playground for me ;) Thanks for the feedback.
@d1ver - thanks, I am happy you found the style "kickass"... This is a first time someone wrote my work is "kickass" :applause:
@ivanisavich - thanks, I am happy you found the style "awesome"... This is a first time someone wrote "awesome" 2x in my thread
@Pyke - thanks. Well okay, this is not a first time someone wrote my style have Burton-ish feel. But hell, I like Tim Burton's world, so I have no problem with that. Tell you, I have to think a lot about lighting for this show. I want to have it rendered in stylised way, so it will be real challenge... to keep the shapes, mood and stylisation in one good looking package.
@Donglu-LittleFish - hehe, yeah, 3D sketch is somehow strange looking term. Of course, pencil and sketchbook is a must for me, but I found rough sculpting essential for translating paper ideas to 3 dimensions. The "3d sketch" term sounds good for this stage to me. Thanks for the feedback.
@Goul - evil, calm and quite scary? That is a very good initial feel for my short. Happy you see her this way.
Thanks for your comments folks, it is an element of motivation for sure.
12 December 2008, 01:02 AM
I was thinking about some new art direction for Elizabeth character and this is what I came up with today. Looks good to me somehow so I need to make decision. Not easy, both have their personality.
12 December 2008, 09:41 PM
man, i knew you joint the challenge. i was wondering how come i cant find your thread. So here's where you've been hiding! in the video section!
Good luck mate!
12 December 2008, 11:16 AM
Bloody "A" or Bloody "B": that is the question. Dear followers, let me know which one you prefer to see in animation. Eventually, let me know what blood-group are you.
12 December 2008, 11:22 AM
I'm in "A" though! works better for me
Btw Great progress sofar Juraj, you have nice environment there! and cool character, wish to see them all in action by soon! and wish ya all the luck in the way! ;)
12 December 2008, 01:30 PM
"A" too, i prefer her face, hte "b" one looks more like a doll
12 December 2008, 09:04 AM
@JackZhang - Jack, man I am not hiding here, since EON I am in video category at first  It is like to have extra month to animate your illustration, so I guess it is somehow cool for personal projects and experiments.
@mim-Armand, Goul - you two, thanks for the "vox populi". The A seem to have more fans so I guess I will continue on that. We are almost in second half of the challenge, time to focus on animation rather than design tweaks.
12 December 2008, 07:15 PM
greate entry start ! i like your style , concept and very nice storyboard.
12 December 2008, 10:47 AM
Love your entry art style. There is really no other project in this challenge that will look like yours. May be this will even play a huge roll in the judging process.
PS: Also adore your idea with progress meter. Very creative! When I first saw it I even thought to myself "Damn! Why I couldn't think out something cool like that?!"
12 December 2008, 12:05 PM
Very nice style and concepts! I like that one with short hair,is more crepy.
Best to you!
12 December 2008, 02:37 PM
I Like A, but i think it would look better if the eyes where more centered.
12 December 2008, 10:34 AM
Check this, I have Bathory and Iron Maiden and now... The Doors :) I think I will use some guitars for my soundtrack.
01 January 2009, 03:31 PM
Animation beginning. Yes, I know it is 20 days to deadline.
01 January 2009, 03:55 PM
Nice one bro...can't wait to see it in motion!
01 January 2009, 08:42 PM
Just keep swimming... Animating continues, I am a bit affraid about time for rendering tho, well, maybe some miracle around deadline will happen :) Anyway, can?t work too much on it during the regular week so hopefuly some more updates comming after the following weekend. cyas
01 January 2009, 11:39 PM
wow the doors looks amazing.
01 January 2009, 06:12 PM

02 February 2009, 06:06 AM
Oh man, I lost the sound from trailer somewhere in the middle of converting... What a Challenge, What a Challenge :argh:
02 February 2009, 06:10 AM
Just watched it (not sure why my last post appears above your finished entry)
The version I had had sound...so don't worry :).......edit: nm, was looking at the wrong part ;)
I thought it was great! Had a very Burtonesque feel to it, and the animation was great...looked like stop-motion in many parts. I especially loved the small details like the bulging tube, and the little spirts of blood that shot up in various places. Great work!
02 February 2009, 06:44 AM
Wonderful work, as usual!
Yep, no sound for the trailer - so better upload again. Also it would be fun if you did the making of part as well - it could give you more possibilities for awards.
02 February 2009, 04:13 PM
So, the challenge is over. Yeah it was real challenge. Half an hour before the deadline I thought I am not going to submit anything since the postproduction is far away from finished. I uploaded what I had, just to show you that I wasnīt unproductive during the challenge. At the end, I found human body to be real machine ( we donīt need to even dring from that well, Tyson :D ). I will continue to work on the postproduction to have it good for portfolio so you may awaiting new, more moody version around the end of this month. Donīt want to work on it too much, better to move to new project. Speaking about that, I think I am over with CG Challenges. I want to focus on real personal projects since those shows took me more than 18 months of personal life from past 3 years. To be fair, I think I professionally grew with projects done for them, so thanks for it. I believe my girlfriend is going to be very happy I am finishing ;) but seriously, she was great supporter during all of my challenges so BIG thanks to you, Ludka! Also, the great musician, my cousin Peter is priceless speaking about challenges. He never asked why should he work for me. He just made some of the best soundtracks in all previous challenges. So, few facts about this Bathory project at the end. I see you around here next time, I believe as a follower not challenger. Or judge, LOL...

I seriously think the absence of you in the next challenges will not be un-noticed. You showed a skill that shines in every part of the whole process. It's a gift. It truly is. One novice like me can only dream of such skills.
And as far as the thing about the challenges: i can understand the way you feel about it cause i feel the same pressure. Once you are obsessed by the creation of it, you live for it. And you loose eye on people around you as well as loosing an eye on yourself.
I have learned a lot with the challenges, and would love the learn so much more. I finished my lousy first challenge, then hooked off at the 2 behind them, and finally finished another challenge. It's only after the challenge that you see more about your workflow - for me especially - and will try to focus on that the next time. It's a way you try to boost your skill, but at a cost.
Cheers and i hope to see your private works around here.
02 February 2009, 12:18 AM
great animation, and beautifull design Juraj !
i like the style of your character :applause:
02 February 2009, 11:25 AM
oh, what a sleep it was last night...
@ ivanisavich - yeah, but important part is sounded so I just hope the 30 sec trailer isnīt the point where judges are closing their players :D Glad you enjoyed the animation.
@ Gunilla - Thanks sis'. Well, it was impossible to reencode everything in 4 minutes. The administrators where so focused on deadline for animators this time. Close to the end I started to really think the project is under the control of Bathory, where she is a puppeteer and I am the puppet. Strange experience to work on the legend based on real historical character it was.
@ Nothingness - wow, thanks man for nice words. IMHO - the thing is, the more skills you get the more complicated your future projects are. So I guess there is never enough time for challenging artists.
@ visionmaster2 - Thanks, I was very focused on overall design of this projects what took some extra time I found missing at the end. But hey, I have some solid base to finish this in short time with good portfolio quality. Your entry is great. It feels retro, like Metropolis maybe :) Very cinematical.
Good luck to you all!
02 February 2009, 11:55 AM
GREAT DESIGN!Great animation and very nice ideea!
Best to you!:applause:
02 February 2009, 11:42 PM
Nice charcter animation and great style! Congrats on finishing your piece! Looking forward to the more "moody" one like you stated it!
02 February 2009, 10:18 AM
@ adib, Martijn81 - thanks mates, you both created nice entries. I am especially happy to see positive feedback on animated part of my entry. I am currently rerendering almost whole character animation since the one in submited entry is rendered at 12 fps thanks to time pressure.
02 February 2009, 08:39 PM
Overall fiasco of this entry surely is one of the things that made me write my complaints over at announcement thread. There really is more but I said enough there. Now, for all the hard work done for it and for all involved in this entry I would love to know why this did not get some respect from the judges... Is it because of unfinished render look? I mean, I thought a lot about Myths, Legends, Steampunk elements, Story... worked hard and pro on Concept Art, Art Direction, Animation in order to bring something that could highly meet the challenge theme and rules. Now it is ignored all the way. I can see only good comments left around this thread and it is hard to believe them for me now. Call me a whiner but I really donīt understand this thing. Yes, it is not cool render, but that is not everything what count here... or is it? Thanks.
