-Leaves detached, editable poly, volume select and drag+drop greyscale gradient which is white just on the base of the leaf so that it only selects the base vertex. Collapsed.
-Particle flow, birth script as posted in another thread to only spawn 1 particle per selected vertex.
The problem I run into is the rotation. It's not a uniform direction across the leaves, it seems to choose a random normal or something. The scene is in Max2009.
