View Full Version : Heroic Autobot, Alpha Trion

I don't think I've ever posted in the 2D section of CG talk, but as it IS a skill that I don't really spend much time in developing, I realize its about time to change that.

Anyways, this little project is geared towards the design of the father of the Autobots, Alpha Trion.

I initially chose this guy because I wanted to focus mainly on designing the robot mode rather than work on both an alternate and robot mode (His alt mode has been "lost" over time).

I do plan on making this guy into a fully animated 3D model at some point, but I want to make sure that the 2D is good to go before hand (and mainly because I have a tendency to rush through the 2D so I can jump into the 3D). ;)

Anyways, here's the picture of the first head shot, front and side only.

The moustache and beard take this into "unrealistic concept" right off the bat.

Transformers, and one would rightly assume Autobots in general, don't have hair. Facial, cranial, nasal, genital, or overall body. They have no need for hair.

So, to put some really fake, hokey looking facial hair on him just looks like fanboy art, and not a conceivable concept from the viewer's perspective.

But he's YOUR creation. If YOU like him with hair, kewlness.

Lol, I need to do better simulation of fiber-optics, because that's pretty much the only way to justify the appearance of hair on a robot.

Though I admit, some things need to be tweaked to give that impression, rather than just funky robot hair.

Its all cool though, this guy needs to be revised and refined a bit before modeling commences. Hopefully, I'll have a full body front up tonight.

well he is pretty old. and in order to be true to the original design he does need hair. but what about wires. make a bunch of differant wires.

Here's some rough sketch work, I apologize for the low quality of the pics.

The second pic shows Dreamwave's Alpha Trion as my reference alongside a sketch I blocked out at work on break.

Hey man I really like your sketches, I like how they have a certain feel to them, lol also I love robots! Anyway keep up the good work, everything is looking good. :applause:

You need more than one reference when doing fan art of a commercial property...
Take note of the hard angle on the side of the beard in this image from the cartoon series:
This is a better drawing of the beard, although the Photoshopped humor escapes me...
Although there are also some variations as well
The beard and moustache, like the rest of the transformer, is a solid and angled shape. When transformed into an autobot, that beard would most likely be a physical part of the external body shape, such as a hood manifold, or some such. Wires would not work, because they would not be connected to anything...

I know it is hard sometimes to conceptualize characters as to realistic "evolution," but it is as important a consideration when creating as accurate lighting and believable anatomy...That is exactly WHY good illustrations are visually believable, because thought went into details like "beards"

But then again, when they decided to create "female" transformers, I think the whole concept went to crap..."Transform and whip it out to impress female..."
