This is my Spot! ...not sure I could start/finish but I'll give it a shot.

The Story:

The Adventures of Kiako son of Khefron

The Mistique Disappearance of the Urmozdians

Kiako, a wild naive Gile from the Abian clan and his trusting mighty Gergin named Arishak, are investigating the inexplicable disappearance of the mythic ancient people of Urmozd who once ruled the planet Mezenithopias in the Shra-kashahama-suna system, long time ago.
Your mission in this first (or third) person action/adventure game is to guide kiako in his jurney to reveal the secret, find any trace and gather any evidences of the Urmozdians' mistique disappearance. Your quest in the deep forests and wide-spreaded saharas of the Mezen is full of the adventures to oppose, surprises to come upon, menaces to defend, foes to defeat & riddles to unravel.

...oh yeah, the concept, here it is: :) (+ the last update)

I think all the challenge topics are great, I just haven't made a game art before, so it's a good time for learning that! (actually I made tons of low-poly characters, but not game targeted)
who knows, maybe you'll see me on animation challenge again, where we'll have more fun!

My eyes are on your job
Wish you succeed .

Reza M.

06 June 2003, 05:55 PM
Cool character! I loved Iluyshka the Mouse, and this one can turn into another great character...

But what I really wanted to ask you about is... How did you achieve that stereoscopic effect? It's really, really cool! :surprised
I know the basic concept is to render it twice and just move the camera a bit to simulate the view from the other eye... But is there a science to it... I mean, is there a way to calculate how much to move the camera, should it also be rotated a bit or just moved? Any tips?

06 June 2003, 05:56 PM
Thank you for the encouragement:) I love Kiako - I want a T-shirt featuring him and an action figure... how about some breakfast cereals :bounce: :applause: :bounce:
be sure I will be visiting here to see how Kiako is coming along.

06 June 2003, 06:03 PM
ila very nice modeling i miss u in the high poly section :) how this cross eye rendering works?

06 June 2003, 06:09 PM
I tried the stereoscopic render on one of my own images, and it works (!

Still would appreciate a reply to my previous question, I feel like this could be better.

P.S. Sorry for going off topic in your thread here... Your only way back on topic is to give us more of your great work.

06 June 2003, 07:20 PM
Neox, Apt Pupil, sten, Massud, Sam, Dimitris, Joril, Reza, Amir, zzzrByte & swag :D   thank you very much.

first how this stereo works: look to the centre of two pics.
now very slowly cross your eyes, like you are looking to your own nose, when your left eye looks to the right picture & your right eye is exactly looking to the left picture,...TADA, it gets 3D!

& my tech: in max, in top view, I shift move/copy the camera to the left or right, a bit. so now I have two camera which their targets are in a same place. now I set one of the left viewports to the camera which is in the right side of the subject, & the right viewport next to the first one set to the camera which placed in left, ...easy. now practice the crossd eyes stereo with the viewports for test, grab one camera & since your eyes is crossed move it slowly, when you are happy with the depth, render each view & with photoshop paste them onto one canvas. that's it!

06 June 2003, 01:04 AM
Man, that is a cool idea... Playing around with two cameras and adjusting the "crosseyed 3d" in real-time. I'm gonna have to try that!

06 June 2003, 10:43 PM
need some wip? here it is ... yes, very wip:

06 June 2003, 11:27 PM
good start ila - the shape looks like the concept :)
i cant cross my eyes - help:rolleyes:

06 June 2003, 11:34 PM
:D hehe! ok

. put your index finger on your nose & sit in front of the monitor just looking to the stereopic @centre.

. now look @ your finger, your eyes are crossed, but in BG you see the out of focus doubled picture in monitor.

. move you finger while looking to it toward the monitor.

. in a certain place the doubled BG pictures overlap & makes one picture, that supposed to be 3D! (stereoscope)

06 June 2003, 11:54 PM
hahaha not easy but i saw the results for 5 sec now tell me how i can get this orange little guy out of my brain :scream:

06 June 2003, 07:08 AM
Your characters are looking good.

The stereopic image is pretty weird.:surprised :argh:
:D

06 June 2003, 01:34 PM
wip wip wip : ...

06 June 2003, 02:32 PM
looking very sweet! I really liked your concept. Great idea on the pet. gave your character more personality :bounce:

06 June 2003, 06:34 PM
HI! yes, personality, I think you should wait until texturing & rigging stages! :D thanx for the kind words.

mesh is nearly finished, 2030 faces that must be reduced to about 1900.

06 June 2003, 09:29 PM

06 June 2003, 09:54 PM
:bounce: Man ...what can i say...i really admire your spirit and love for what u do...give to your little child a kiss from Unkle Dimitris from Greece...u have my respect!!!

06 June 2003, 10:38 PM
:D hahaha! sure ... he's greeting uncle Dimitris,

Atrin: "a'oom ... a'goom ... eh eh ... "

06 June 2003, 07:52 AM
you have a cute boy!! :wavey: God save him .(Bezanam be takhte)
and about your challenge .... your doing awsome
I am here to see the texture .....

06 June 2003, 01:32 PM
I look atrin for first time (manam hamoon ke reza goft)
I wait for the texturing and .....
but the quality of last picture ......

06 June 2003, 04:50 PM
ila i see your boy and i like that -behet tabrik migam(midoonam ke chand saleshe vali man nadide boodamesh)-
oh your work is very good too

06 June 2003, 08:23 PM
thanks a lot friends
just for your attraction: these are both 512x512 texture sheet templates + the head texture.

06 June 2003, 08:52 PM
That texture looks sweet!
For some reason I canīt see your other pics.... Quite disturbing, because I would very much like to see the mesh with that texture applied to it :)

06 June 2003, 09:53 PM
:) FIXED! sorry, that error was because of the server DNS changing.

06 June 2003, 10:06 PM
ok ok, a wraped head texture test :

06 June 2003, 10:57 PM
Cute little dude you have there Ila, I just wonder if maybe you could draw a couple of little holes as nostrils, thats my only point, otherwise, kick ass as usual!

06 June 2003, 12:27 PM
very nice texture ILA :applause:

06 June 2003, 12:29 PM
Yes yes, nosetrils, I'll put some... thanx! ;)

06 June 2003, 12:47 PM
dose the texture of the body is complete????????or not??????????

06 June 2003, 12:58 PM
NOT! .. as you can see!!!

06 June 2003, 01:04 PM
i can see this :D
really nice so far, but why is the smoothing on his loincloth so strange? isn't it better du make this with an doublesided material then with moddeling it? this would be better for the smoothing and you could use an alphachannel for getting it round :)

:edit: and the uv maps for his body seem to be pretty "stretchy"

06 June 2003, 05:14 PM
neat idea. I give it a shot...but i usually do not like alpha mapping in characters! ;P
about the uv, i have to paint over it wrap it first too see the effect ... I'll let u know then
cheeers neox :)

06 June 2003, 06:07 PM
very cutie !!

06 June 2003, 09:59 PM
Nice character and beast

You have a some stretching in your texture though on the side of the head between the eyes and the ears, and I would play a little more with the UV's on the blue horns/tentacles or whatever they are ;)

The smoothing problem on the edges of the cloth seems to me to be with the smoothing groups. If you use a 2-sided material, that means a lot of ekstra polygons to be taken into account, when rendering it in-game because then the whole model will have 2-sided materials. If you use smoothing groups, giving the front and the back different smoothing groups, you will avoid the black edges on the edges of cloth, as it won't try to gouraud-shade the front with the back.

06 June 2003, 10:27 PM
Thanx frakke, yes I figured out that problems.
about the cloth smoothing problem, you are right, the back and front faces has a shared group#. will be fixed

06 June 2003, 05:44 AM
Ya .... Nice job.
Don't you wana use any Bump maps?
I think
it would be nice to use bump maps for eyebrows ...
& he's cute enough without any nostrails !!!
Nowadays 3D-G.Cards will handle Hi-res maps + bump + refl.&+ ....

I'm just here to see more
 Reza Misaghi

06 June 2003, 11:10 PM
:) Hmm, yes...bump maps ... maybe...maybe ...!

06 June 2003, 03:50 AM
Someone bite the nipples off?

06 June 2003, 11:03 AM
this is excellent stuff ila. haven't been here since the lotr comp months ago. your entry was one of my faves in that: it dared to be different.
i love this new stuff you are doing mate: so much style. well done! :)
if you have developed a taste for game art then i reckon you might wanna head over to our little gameart area has grown with each successive competition and from what you are doing here i think youd love this months comp (cutsey character double act).
would be great to have you along! i had wanteed to enter this comp but i just dont see that i am going to have time now.
cheers mate! hope to see you there!

06 June 2003, 11:03 PM
Hi Jake, thank you very much, I'm checking the cgchat now!

i think this creature is finished: nipples added!

going for Arishak the Beast!

06 June 2003, 02:18 AM
Very cool! I like it alot, nice to see he received some nipples too

06 June 2003, 03:11 AM
my only crit is that the color of the head doesn't match the color of the body. other than that grrrrreat!:D

06 June 2003, 08:46 AM
Oh, really? ... I'm color blind! :p

06 June 2003, 01:13 PM

Dude, blue and yellow are contrast colors.. it may be your taste but they match eachother! ;)

06 June 2003, 01:30 PM
I guess cbadger85 was refering to the yellow of the head being different from the one on the body, it seems to me that they differnte shades of yellow asw well. the head looks lighter and with a bit of green.

06 June 2003, 02:48 PM
Really nice character Ila, the texture of the hands look really good. The only thing that looks a little off to me is hte red on its feet. It just looks a little out of place with hte surrounding colours. Love the blue hair.

06 June 2003, 02:49 PM
Mr cbadger85 :shame: :shame:

06 June 2003, 10:47 PM
:) yes sure , the head is more yelowish, i said that I'm color blind.
and about the red feet, hmmm ... it look dirty this way! I liked it. but can be more blended with legs.

massoud ... I didn't get the POINT of your post!! :)

07 July 2003, 09:46 AM
I think Cbadger made a good point about the colours, but for someone who's colour blind, it's well good!

Anyway who says your head can't be a different colour to your body! My arms and head are tanned and I look like I've got a white flesh designed t- shirt on!

I wasn't convinced with the yellow at first I liked the original orange pallette in the concept, but I can see now that it works very well.

Brilliant work ila_solomon:applause:

My Game Icon submission. (

07 July 2003, 10:04 AM
Thanx Okse , anyway I corrected the color of head, and added some stains , check the last image submisson post for updates (and don't forget to press F5 to refresh!)
:) cheers

07 July 2003, 10:46 PM
Hey dudes...
what's the fastest way for texturing this beast? yes: Maya > Automatic UV mapping > 3D Paint on surface! :) I ended up with this just in an hour: hehe yes that's low detail texture, but worth it.

07 July 2003, 10:47 PM

07 July 2003, 07:22 AM
Jealous :buttrock:

07 July 2003, 10:01 AM
cool! just an hour, huh?
I think it looks real good so far, but I find it a bit too... red! maybe some variation on the colors, keeping a reddish tone as base color?

07 July 2003, 04:20 PM
Some nice stuff here. One of the best in the challenge. I have a few suggestions though...

On the little guy I would darken his horns where they meet the head. It looks a little odd right now.

I would also love to see the texturing done in a more stylised fashion, more like the concept. Not toon shaded exactly but using simpler bolder textures (again like the concept). It might also be nice to put in the line shaded effect near the eyes and under the arms. At the moment I think the detail in the texture is taking something away from it, especially the feet which look smudgy.

07 July 2003, 12:40 AM
why is the texture resolution smaller then the one of your small guy? i mean the small one is great but this is no relation between those too texture resolutions :p

07 July 2003, 07:08 AM
It's looking great, but if you want to put it under a game engine, be careful vith those UVs. You used some automatic mapping (as far as I can see :)), which is easy to paint in a 3d paint program, but in a realtime engine more UV feeds up more power. Anyway, great character, as always! :buttrock:

07 July 2003, 08:33 AM
thank you friends.

...maybe some variation on the colors...
but it already has some ... ok, maybe I add more!
I think the detail in the texture is taking something away from it
donno, maybe it looks a little complex, but really it is not! just noises... :p
why is the texture resolution smaller then the one of your small guy?
Not my fault, not my fault, ask Maya's Automatic UV mapping!!! :) hehehe! also I've painted over the mesh in 3d environment. so it looks crapy (it's a fast method and I'm a lazy boy!)
but if you want to put it under a game engine
No I won't! :D but thank you for the info.

07 July 2003, 03:11 PM
ila thats look great
u used a wacom for the maya 3d paint? what resolution u setup?

07 July 2003, 11:04 PM
Yes, waccom, straight 3d paint on a 512x512 texture template! (It was so slow when I tried to paint over a 1k rez map :( )

07 July 2003, 11:42 AM
okey ila
but i think if your character's nose was lower most that be better

07 July 2003, 12:18 PM
hmm 1k and it lags ... what gfx u have in your box?

07 July 2003, 10:50 PM
GForce4 4200 128 ddr on an Athlon xp 1700+ with 768 mb ram.
so it shouldn't be slow, nah?

07 July 2003, 11:00 PM

07 July 2003, 09:45 AM
I'm not going to do more, consider it finished!

I'll put the meshes available for Download soon.

07 July 2003, 09:52 AM
i can't see it! i can't see it! :annoyed:
:edit: after posting this, i could see it, good work :edit:

you are using the maya automatic unwrapping? uh very lazy guy! try it with the bau tools, a automatic unwrap routine for maya, a friend of mine scripted for maya, its a little buggy but it gives you clean and effincient unwraps (it works like me :D)

i guess you can get it on

or just go
here (
its in german, but you'll find the english help under the point "online-hilfe", i guess you know what "download" means, so you'll be able to download the script and the last link is just a simple video documentation on how it works (dunno maybe its with german a voice :D)

07 July 2003, 09:21 PM
Simply awesome! Jaw has dropped! im still struggling with textuing lol. :)

07 July 2003, 10:28 PM
Looks great! I like that style of character design! Do you have plans for the characters AFTER the contest?

07 July 2003, 05:17 AM
cute ........ cute ............

07 July 2003, 09:18 AM
Looks great, would be even better to see them posing like in the concept picture on the bottom left :applause:

07 July 2003, 09:52 AM
What happened to the the big red guy? Really great character design but the mapping and texturing is killing it. It looks like a 64x64 texture at the moment and there are noticeable seams everywhere.

You have used a lot of noise in the texture which is why the seams are appearing.

You should spend a bit more time fixing this, it deserves better.

If you don't have time fair enough but I think it could be really good if you put some more work into this.

07 July 2003, 01:04 PM
i am waiting ila
but you dont solve that nose

07 July 2003, 11:10 PM
no time! sorry friends   :wavey:

07 July 2003, 11:28 PM
What an entry, congrats! I can see these guys actually being in a video game, which says a lot.
Once again, congrats and goodluck in the voting! :)

07 July 2003, 11:31 AM
okay boy

07 July 2003, 01:26 PM
can I have some mesh to learn?

07 July 2003, 10:48 PM
Go to my page in download section ( you will find these 2 characters with their textures in fbx format, download the rar file and 'openup' it!

for opening fbx format you must have its plugin (go to and DL the FBX plugin)

07 July 2003, 12:05 PM
thanks ila it don't sfx?
which of them?. there are two fbx

07 July 2003, 09:12 AM
Total # of tripolys: 3922

07 July 2003, 09:16 AM

07 July 2003, 02:21 PM
now just the bridle remaind
and the arishak mat dont clearly it's like something copyed from a floppy that had badsector
can you put a better?

07 July 2003, 01:38 PM
I am dissapointed to hear that. It might have been fun to see more of that universe.

I'd like to post more, but it is difficult. Many of the projects here are technically executed quite well, so it feels strange for me to go around pronouncing that someone's work is good or bad. It's much easier for me to just say I like something when I see something I like.

My only criticism of the challenge entries in general would be whether they're meeting the specifications of the assignment.
