These challenges are always so cool. I just couldn't resist any longer. This will be my first challenge and I look forward to hanging on til the end and seeing everyones entries.
I decided to create a still from a cutscene. Ya know right after the cutscene is finished you see a still image from what you just watched while the game level is loading....
I have a story in the works as well as additional hero/villian designs and environment sketches. Here is a hero character costume design for now. more to come. As always, comments/suggestions welcome as I go. Don't hold back.

Nice start man. Reminds me of older Sci-Fi characters.

ok finally got my web stuff taken care of. Thanks Jokke.
Well that was the suit design for the hero space rangers and this is the color sketch for the cutscene illo I want to do. I've been really busy since my first post working on this. I even hired models and did a prfessional photo shoot/rented costumes and guns. Did this all last week while I was having hosting problems.
Let me know what you think.

This cutscene still represents the action to take place in the second to last level of the game.
The rangers discover and infiltrate the underground lair of the space pirates which happens to be inside the remains of a huge space station that impacted into the surface of a ice planet decades ago. It has since been covered over by years of snow storms and layers of ice and rock. Anyway, The rangers are low on fuel and in deperate need to capture the pirate leader and leave the ice planet before their ship freezes. So along the way they have to collect these green anti freeze/fuel pods as they go deeper into the ship. The pirate leader, detecting our heroes presence, releases a swarm of his lairs automated defense bots called stingers. Then the level begins.....
Primary mission- capture pirate leader
Secondary mission- collect 100 fuel pods so you can leave the surface. Destroy all obstacles in your way.

anyway here's one of the reference shots I took last week for my illustration. Now it's just a simple matter of painting in the chest armor and other costume elements over the ref.
I plan to build a rough block model of the environment in max just for perspective. Just enough to get what I don't feel like doing by hand, then I'll paint over it. I didn't see anything in the rules stating that I can't paint over a 3d model. So if anyones got a problem please speak up.

:eek: You are taking some strange routes! But I like it. Sounds good Eric. I think you can technically do whatever you want. Personally I was thinking the other day what if I wanted to a 3D illustration? I've seen lots of illustrators incorporating 3D in their 2D work. In the end its up to the judges.

Here's the other two hero characters. Almost done modeling the environment. should be read to paint by wednesday at the latest.
I know this is the boring stuff but I don't want anybody to have questions on where or how I did something. The fun stuff is coming.

Ok here are the steps I went through this week for modeling the cutscene environment. I kept the geometry very simple so I can spend my time painting. From these I've done a final render and have started work. 22 days left. I should be able to get it done.
I'll post an update of the painting progress soon. Is anybody out there?

High ambitions are always the best, Im amazed at the time you have putted down, and prolly will, put in to this challenge.

Thanks Alice. YeahI figure even if I don't finish by deadline it will be a good portfolio piece and that can't hurt. Anyway here is the final layout before painting. Photo ref in place and ready. Their placement seems a little off to me. Maybe I've just been staring too long. Does anyone else see a problem with the figure placement? Original rez 31.5" x 14.5" at 300 dpi.
