(Update 2003-07-12 00:45)

Game info:
The characters name is Igor Bazooka (donīt ask)
And with a name like that you canīt just grow up and become normal.
Being a frequent guest at various mentalinstitutions, you must not only fight off the badies but also your own insanity. Loose it and youīll be out of control. Youīre mission is revenge. Youīre fierce, brutal, and quite mad....
The game is a 3rd-person action shooter, set in a near and dirty future.

(Concept below)

Runloop ( (0.5 MB)
Turny ( (4.5 MB)

Iīm on it. Iīll draw some concepts tonight, and post int the morning. Thisīll be fun : )

06 June 2003, 05:39 PM
Iīve been doing some thinking, and some sketches but I havenīt scanned them yet. But maybe Iīll just turn this old painting into a gamecharacter. I think it could turn out pretty nice.
What do you think?
Itīs a wolverine with a big ass gun. But maybe itīs been done a million times allready......

Trust me, wolverines with big ass guns are pretty much non-existent ;)

06 June 2003, 04:55 PM
hehe cool, looks like he should eb an evil character from (was it wind in the willows, with TOAD and BADGER etc) .... kind of makes me think of a Hyena rather than a wolf though.... i think its because of his haunch / hunch. I dig it though, love the suspenders.

06 June 2003, 05:40 PM
I have never in all my days seen a wolverine with a gun. Not that I wouldn't like to...

06 June 2003, 09:38 PM
Nice concept! I like that image.

06 June 2003, 06:24 PM
Iīve just started modelling. Long way to go, but now Iīm at it :)

06 June 2003, 06:37 PM
What a wild concept! And great start on the model ;)

06 June 2003, 08:57 PM
Kinda reminds me of the weasels in "Who framed Roger Rabbit" :) looks like your off to a good start

06 June 2003, 03:53 AM
He reminds me of "Rocket Racoon." A comic that Mike Mignola drew long long ago.

Pretty sweet! His trousers are the best.

06 June 2003, 08:36 PM
here is a little update. Iīll work more on proportions later. Still a long way to go....

And I couldnīt resist MeshSmoothing :)

Thatīs all for now. Over and out. :wavey:

06 June 2003, 09:23 PM
your mesh seems very clean. :) whats the current poly count?
I counldn't resist a mesh smooth on my character too

06 June 2003, 11:53 AM
itīs currently 2500 tris. So Iīll have plenty of faces for details and whatīs left of the model. :)

06 June 2003, 07:03 PM
hehe, looks like itīs gonna be pretty tight in the end. Iīll still have to add some patches for hair and more detail to his shoes, not to mention, that Iīll have to model his gun aswell.

Aaaanyway. Hereīs what I,ve got so far.......

06 June 2003, 08:41 PM

Now Iīve only got 80 faces left

06 June 2003, 10:53 PM
One word...Nice! This is so cool Ic an just see his attitude and character through his concept pose.

06 June 2003, 07:39 PM
...and I have 7 faces spare :)

Now itīs on to texturing.

06 June 2003, 08:53 PM
Great work ! and fast too !
Really well done :!
One crit though : perhaps you could save a few polies on the gun ( trigger and barrel).
Otherwise just can't wait to see it finished !

06 June 2003, 09:08 PM
Well as long as I can keep it under 4000, thereīs realy no need to strip any polygons, but in case I should need some extra I know where to take them from

actually Iīve removed some from the trigger allready:thumbsup:

06 June 2003, 11:01 PM
both design & technique is superb, looks hires to me! ;) I can't believe it's under 4K polys, very well done, cheeeers!

06 June 2003, 11:30 PM
Thanks alot!
This will be my last post for tonight. (gotta get some sleep)

Iīve unwrapped most of the UV:s now....

06 June 2003, 12:46 AM
Awesome job setting up the UVs. Not a lot of stretching going on there!

Can't wait to see your texture job!

06 June 2003, 02:44 AM
Awesome concept and model. He sort of reminds me of a down and out private eye (especially if you put one of those detective hats on his head). That or some type of henchman. UV mapping looks good but I think you need to take a little look at his shout, it looks like its stretching there and getting smaller.

06 June 2003, 01:15 PM
Layout is completed. Now Iīll start painting. But Iīll need something to eat first :)

I also found out I had a few hidden faces that i could delete.
So the complete mesh, including gun, sums up to 3960 faces. unless I decide to add some more hairpatches later.

Thatīs all for now. Bye:wavey:

06 June 2003, 05:47 PM
I decided I would start painting the bump-map. This is what Iīve got so far:

Iīll make a Spec-map too, and a diffuse ofcourse :)

06 June 2003, 07:09 PM
just a suggestion:
better not to put on him another cloth (shirt). ;)

06 June 2003, 07:50 PM
I'm sorry but I donīt realy understand what you mean..
Do you mean I should use another texture for his shirt?

06 June 2003, 09:27 PM
no no, I meant no shirt at all, the pants is enough, IMO. so he looks more crooked that way.

06 June 2003, 10:13 PM
this is really cool, i gotta say tho although the model is nice it doesnt quite have that grimey lil weasle aura that the concept sketch did... probably when its posed

06 June 2003, 10:54 PM
I agree with ila_solomon, he looks much better without the shirt!!

This character will look great when finished :D

06 June 2003, 12:58 PM
for your nice coments. I think Iīll stick with the shirt though. Mainly because Iīm so lazy, and donīt want to draw anymore fur. Itīs so boring :p Maybe Iīll have the time to do both versions....

I hope the pose will help, but I too feel that he lacks that attitude that he has in the sketch.

Gonna work some more now, bye :wavey:

06 June 2003, 05:42 PM
I know this ainīt much of a update.
Iīm just gonna say I wont be able to do any work on this in a couple of days. But hopefully I will have some time later on.

Till then :wavey:

06 June 2003, 05:27 AM
Reduce the faces on the trigger and the little thing (hammer???) that you pull back by about half know body will ever see the difference in a game.

06 June 2003, 05:42 PM
Like I said earlier
actually Iīve removed some from the trigger allready

And obvioulsy you didnīt notice, so you were right ;)

And also like I said before
as long as I can keep it under 4000, thereīs realy no need to strip any polygons

Over and out.

06 June 2003, 03:49 AM
love the concept and model

1 thing i want to pick at... is the length of the barrel of the gun make it longer it just aint big enough

06 June 2003, 08:53 PM
RasTuS: That is a easy fix :) Iīll see what looks best in the end.

Hereīs a little update. Iīve started painting some diffuses....

06 June 2003, 06:25 AM
sweet mother of all that is good and pure. this is greatness, indeed.:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

06 June 2003, 07:34 PM

...back to work :arteest:

06 June 2003, 08:44 PM
Hereīs what Iīve got at the moment.
Still a long way to go.

06 June 2003, 09:07 AM
realy nice but i think the skin is 2 yellow

06 June 2003, 11:22 AM
I hope youīre not refering to the first picture :)
Because the yellow areas are just untextured.
Iīll have a look at the arms though.

06 June 2003, 11:24 AM
and i think also the shirt and gloves need to be a darker colour

06 June 2003, 05:22 PM
Thereīs a general problem with dark textures, in that they donīt recive much of the dynamic lighting. Since they can only be as bright as the texture itself.

06 June 2003, 05:53 PM
verry beautiful and smooth skin you've got Ivars. nice
how did you come up with the 'matching the edge of seperated faces?' :)

06 June 2003, 06:41 PM
Hehe, donīt ask :)
Thatīs just alot of time in photoshop, trying to get it to match. Itīs a pain really.

06 June 2003, 07:06 PM

Truly amazing stuff! I love the concept all the way to the last post. Can you walk me through your process of modeling it looks as if it comes with such ease to you. I am trying to learn Max right now and trying to understand the best way to model. Any help would be great.

06 June 2003, 09:33 PM
Iīll give it a shot :)
I work with the symetrty modifier so that I wonīt have to model both sides. I use mainly edge-extrusion when I model.
Hereīs a lame reconstruction I made in photoshop:

1. I start with a box for the head, just creating a rough silhouette.
2. Then I add enough edges to give the head some depth and details. I extrude the edges on his neck to the right creating his shoulder.
3. Then I extrude edges to create chest and back.
4. I extrude some more edges to form the side of his body, leaving a hole for the arm.
5. In the same way, I connect back and front, creating a crotch and leaving a hole for the leg.
6. Then I extrude the edges for arms and legs, and shape them in to that.

Well, I guess that made absolutly no sense at all
Thanks for listening, anyway.

06 June 2003, 10:26 PM
that made sense to me, or maybe that's becuase that's how I model too. I have a quick question for you though, do you always start with the head when modeling?

06 June 2003, 12:10 AM
Most of the times I do. Because I find it to be the hardest, and i donīt want to save that for last. But some times i start with the torso.....

06 June 2003, 05:08 PM
Just a little update, so you know I havenīt jsut been sleeping all weekend.
Iīll work a little more later, but now: FOOD

Chris Antonelle
06 June 2003, 09:49 PM
looking friggin awesome
im also starting off in max and would love to find out details of you and other artists go about creating such great models
what you have explained is helpful

ive seen many max tutorials, but some like to assume you know a lot already - this doesnt help me
does this forum have a tutorial section? tutes written by you guys?

07 July 2003, 12:16 AM
Ivars - You da man. Those diagrams were awesome and I appreciate you taking the time to do them. One question still lies in my head. When you say that you just add more edges how do you do that?

Thanks man :applause:

07 July 2003, 02:47 AM
Looking great Ivars...tho i got to tell you i'm finding the non-bump mapped version a lot more attractive to look at, its less busy and a lot more toonish without.

07 July 2003, 10:13 AM
Very nice model and texture work so far. The fur might stretch a bit too much though and perhaps it could use a bit more contrast. Also, if you could make som variations bestween the bump and the color in the fur, it might help a bit. It looks very much like you've 'just' used the color as a greyscale bump. Some adjustments with curves in the bump might help there.
The color of the shirt might be a bit off. Red and green is a bad combination :) Perhaps a brown shirt would fit better.

Other than that I think this is really great! I'm looking forward to see how the fur on the tale will look.

07 July 2003, 12:12 AM
Double Damn!

I'd murder someone to see this model in q3 or something.
The textures are top notch, I especially like the head. Keep up the great work :applause:

07 July 2003, 12:20 AM
CAN'T wait to watch him posed with that pistol! :D well done Ivar.

Digital Ninja
07 July 2003, 06:28 AM
I love this character, especially the texture work, very sweet man!

07 July 2003, 07:15 PM
Wow, thank you all for your kind words! And also some good tips.

frakke: I just might change some colorschemes, and see what I can come up with.

pica$$0: I use mostly the connect edge command, and the cut tool. Trying to keep some nice edgeloops around the mouth and eye. That will be usefull for good deformations.

Now Iīm gonna finsh this texture, and move on to rigging. Iīll wait with the bump- and specmaps.

07 July 2003, 09:42 PM
wow... Model is nice and clean, the textures are amazing. it really take some skills to make a good real time character! really nice work, Ivars!

07 July 2003, 11:47 PM
Here is a update. I still need to tweak the skinning, and the texture isnīt complete yet....
But I just wanted to play arouond with the rig.

and hereīs the texture in itīs current form:

07 July 2003, 12:01 AM
this is really great man. keep up the good work. :applause: :applause: :applause:

Apt Pupil
07 July 2003, 12:11 AM
I can't see his entire face, maybe increasing the global ambient light a little . . . Otherwise, he's top notch . . . period.

Can't wait to this guy finished:beer:

07 July 2003, 02:25 AM
wow !
Even better than i expected !
Very moody, the only thing i don't dig so much is the "green" shirt!
Fantastic otherwise !

Mangled Poly
07 July 2003, 02:30 AM
this guy has changed
ALOT for the better im glad you went with the more simpilictic clothes it works so much better

07 July 2003, 08:51 PM
Thanks for your comments.
Apt Pupil : Both pose and lighting are temporary, but thanks for the input.
ckaos@om : Iīll see what I can do with the colorschemes. No changes in this post though....

Hereīs a little something, just to show off the skinning and mesh.
Still some untexturesd areas. Iīve done a facial rig also, but that wont be noticable in this shot.

runloop.avi (1,1MB DivX) (

07 July 2003, 10:17 PM
This is just amazing :) Really nice job on the tail.

07 July 2003, 11:15 PM
what a cool guy is he! ... :) so nice anim u've got.
hey Ivar did you get my last e-mail?

07 July 2003, 09:56 AM
frakke: thanks, glad you liked it.
ila: Sure did:beer: Iīll get back to you right away

Iīll be finishing the textures today, and maybe animate some more.... see ya!

07 July 2003, 07:25 PM
Iīve done some modifications on the texture. New coloscheme and some stains and dirt. What do you think? Are these good colors? Does the dirt make it look better or worse?

07 July 2003, 07:42 PM
The dirt makes it look better IMHO, but the textures are still too yellow, also IMHO :)

07 July 2003, 10:14 PM
I think the stains make the texture come more to life. But I think the stains on the pants need better placement. They just seem random. They should be in places where the thing wipes it hands, Or spots that get handled a lot, like his pockets and fly for example. Or spots that scrape past dirty objects.

07 July 2003, 07:46 AM
Thank you, both of you.
supervlieg: youīve got some good points there :)
Hellwolve: Your HO is exactly what I asked for

I just realized I havenīt provided any game-info or background story to my character.... Iīll have to do that right away.

also, hereīs the latest render:

Okay hereīs some info:

The characters name is Igor Bazooka (donīt ask)
And with a name like that you canīt just grow up and become normal.
Being a frequent guest at various mentalinstitutions, you must not only fight off the badies but also your own insanity. Loose it and youīll be out of control. Youīre mission is revenge. Youīre fierce, brutal, and quite mad....

07 July 2003, 08:22 AM
The Best In The Challenge!

07 July 2003, 08:36 AM
The only thing I noticed is that in the concept the eye looks alot better. I like how it is the color is on the bottom in the concept. OTher than that the style is really cool!

07 July 2003, 08:34 PM
ila: Wow, youīre far to kind
d4rk: You were right. Iīve redone the eyes (even though it wont show in this pic

I call it "the fallen hero" :D

Just playing around now. I have a few minor texture fixes to do, and then Iīll have to come up with a pose for my final shot.

07 July 2003, 09:04 PM
Excellent work in every aspect.

07 July 2003, 09:22 PM
lol, I like that fallen hero :). Your texturing is fantastic!. I wish i could get mine to look that good. ;(

07 July 2003, 05:00 PM

Iīm now finished with the model. Iīll just make some renders for my entry now, and Iīll be set.
Hereīs a little something:

Animation ( (removed, I ran out of space :( )

HaHa thats simply awesome! what program are you using?

07 July 2003, 10:32 AM
Thank you Mangled Poly.
Iīm using MAX 5.1 and characterStudio.

07 July 2003, 10:38 AM

I Love your 3d modeling.

It seems like you know what you doing...

actually, I think that's what I need for me now. I'm just starting learn 3d stuffs.

However sometimes even though my hands move on, I don't know what I want, what I'm doing.

I Love your character. I would love to see so on work.

07 July 2003, 05:49 PM
I've been following the progress of this one and I've just got to big you up and say I am well impressed from the creation of the mesh, the mapping and texturing.

Amazing stuff.

07 July 2003, 10:19 PM
Ooohlala !

Looking good... super nice texture!
i realy want to see his opponent :buttrock:
...maby next challenge?

see you at da bunker..

07 July 2003, 07:12 PM
Ok, I really want your opinions on this. Pose, angle, lightig, render.

07 July 2003, 07:36 PM
nothing to say except :applause:
(i love the tail)

i wish i have your skill

07 July 2003, 09:34 PM
Hi Ivars. All excellent work. But something is really missing.. "mustache" .. I mean animal mustache, sensitive hair around the nose. How many polys do you have left? 3 hair on each side would really be cool! .. or opacity map it..

07 July 2003, 09:59 PM
I really like the texturing, well and the model of course, but i like the efficent use of the texture maps. im still learning texturing but that looks great:thumbsup:

07 July 2003, 10:32 PM
m@. I completly forgott :argh: And I only have 3 faces left...
I guess I could make it some way, but than Iīll have to redo the physique and that would be a major pain in the ass, and I donīt think I would make it on time :banghead:

Anyway, thanks for the comment :)

Thank you all!

07 July 2003, 11:05 PM
S U P E R B !
u don't need to change a thing.
if u want to put mustache, just delete some faces from the tail.
you will have all my 5 scores :D

07 July 2003, 11:24 PM
Thank you!
Yeah that tail is rather heavy.

Hereīs a cheesy wire-shaded-texture-turn-kinda-animation :) ( (5.4 MB)

07 July 2003, 12:11 AM
just great !! He has character , and both the mesh and the textures are great ! The colors are definetly a lot better aswell !
Did you place the alpha planes for the tail randomly ?
Cheers ! and goodluck !

07 July 2003, 10:17 AM
Just wanted to come in and give you my two thumbs up on a nice job well done.

Funny guy,nice mesh,nice texture work.Very nice effort.

07 July 2003, 01:41 PM
ckaos@om: That depends on how you see it. Thereīs really no system in the placement, but Iīve put alot of effort in to it, just trying to give it the right volume.

07 July 2003, 02:31 PM
really have to congratulate on the nice work. he's a beauty. hope you win, and see you at the voting both tomorrow, perhaps.:applause:

07 July 2003, 05:09 PM
Wow... utterly Amazing.

great concept, great modeling, great texturing, great poses, great animation. You got it all!

07 July 2003, 05:30 PM
not to mention the unwraping skill as well. Very cool little animation. Super great job!!

07 July 2003, 07:38 PM
Excellent, really topnotch, can't see anything obious to improve at all actually.

07 July 2003, 08:27 PM
I have one question though, how the hell do you get the seams in the texture to get totally invisible. No matter how hard I try I can't find a single seam in your model. Is it only a lot of hard work in Photoshop or do you have some kind of special secret? No matter how hard I try I can't get my seams to disappear.

07 July 2003, 07:50 AM
I usually try matching the UV-seams with actual seams in the texture (ie. the seam along his side) Otherwise itīs just alot of hard work in photoshop :)

07 July 2003, 12:23 AM
Great work Ivars! I could tell from the offset that you were going to be my best competitor! Now we're neck and neck for most votes, only 5 points between us!

Eeek, it's close!

Good job, by the way, yours has quite a bit of character to it!

Good luck!

07 July 2003, 05:40 PM
great work!..........
it's really a 5 star stuff!

08 August 2003, 06:55 PM
I always liked this character, from the time you had it posted in the 2D section. You have done a very nice job, from start to finish.

08 August 2003, 12:14 PM
 :buttrock:

Superb modelling and texturing, nothing to crit

08 August 2003, 07:42 AM
Jesus and your only 20 years of age?! You amaze me, and I am envious of you. Great work and congratulations on the challenge!:applause:

08 August 2003, 09:57 AM
 Congratulation Ivar, I knew that :D

08 August 2003, 02:07 PM
Wow! Thank you guys!
ila: Yeah you did, didnīt you :)
