View Full Version : The Showdown - character - lildragon

Here's the back story for this animation challenge.

The Scenerio: Kar and Nemoui meets head to head to fight for the right of the land they both happen to claim as their own. In this scene Nemoui is more of a brute than Kar is, he gets Kar in a predicament that looks very grim and moves in for the kill only to be surprised by Kar's resources and experience in fighting, ie making the opponent feel that he has won.

Very basic story but great animation exercise if I pull this off it'll look great on my reel :D Storyboards below

Ok don't expect a work of art here but you can get the jiff of the story here ;)

Here's an animatic, just to get the feel of *some* timing.

;) storyboard in a bit. Plus I got a weird rigging problem in the wrist of my character in Maya, I've been using Alex A's fk/ik switch, but when I rotate the locator at the wrist, it goes the opposite direction! And yes Ali I did everything on the local rotational axis :hmm: but that's why this challenge will help :p

I wish you BIG LUCK! ... but I'll kill you if you don't finish your entry! remember that I'm coming to canada & then you are not safe! :D :) ;) :p

06 June 2003, 11:10 AM
Ok I've decided to use Kar and Nemoui for battle ;) I'll post some poses over the weekend, but for me the most part it'll be all low ez geometry and possible high rez for the final animation, I'll be concentrating alot on the animation aspect, as we all should ;) They'll be a few weapons involved, a sword, a club, and a bo staff. I'm just refining my rig so I can get onto it. I'll post a quick storyboard very soon, possibly later today. Stay Tuned

You're coming to Canada! when?!!? and are you joining in this month? :)

You're coming to Canada! when?!!? and are you joining in this month?
:) probably next year! ... this migration process is damn slow!
& about this month challenge, hmmm,...I've already reserved my spot here (, just if i get enough time.

06 June 2003, 11:07 AM
Ah whereabouts? Don't say Vancouver :p

Ok update time I've finally created a rig I don't have to fight with, I now have a process down to a science, which means I can rig a whole lot faster ;)

Below is a low res version of Nemoui posing, and to the right a screen cap of the rig.

I'm still working on the story but hopefully that'll be up later today (time permitting)

06 June 2003, 11:46 AM
that rig looks really cool & clean, ... & yeah, vancouver rules! :p all my family already are there! :D

06 June 2003, 12:24 PM
Yeah the clean rig was one of my main objectives since rigging gets boring after awhile, and you just wanna animate! and you bum I knew you were heading to Vancouver *hiss* heh

Ok here's a quick screen grab with Nemoui (missing his armor and hair) and the rig.
more to come I asure you ;)

06 June 2003, 02:29 PM
Tight my man! :drumrock:

06 June 2003, 02:42 PM

Can't wait to see the animation progress :D

06 June 2003, 05:02 PM
Heh thx guys I can't wait to show you what I have planned, if I can pull it off woo boy.
Here's a quick vid done with techsmith, just showing and testing the rig [2megs]

06 June 2003, 05:52 PM
what format is this in nothing will play it. I presume it is a techsmith codec problem since i have everything else.

Hey Lild,
I think I may have to grab a seat and kick back on this thread, before I miss out on anymore.
Always good to see ya entering in the fun!
p.s: What's wrong with Vancouver eh? :p

06 June 2003, 10:43 AM
very nice!!!

06 June 2003, 05:11 PM
boards posted in first post, time to weight these characters and animate!

06 June 2003, 05:15 PM
nice a battle of epic proportions!

and since we know the models are already killer, just wow us with some animations and you got yourself a winner here!

I like the extending staff.... you could do it like martial arts movies, have it break in half and let him go two pronged attack to ;)

keep it up man!

Heh! I love it! Where'd ya get those cool sndfx?

06 June 2003, 01:16 AM
heeeey! Intense...very intense :wip:
is that a wise use of sound fx or what?

06 June 2003, 10:34 PM
Me likes.Like mentioned by the other guys cool sound FX.I like the battle idea. Rig looks good too.Keep it going Lil'.Great start.

06 June 2003, 04:33 PM
Stephen Vyas: Heh I have like over 3,000 of them, I used to collect them from games and off the web for a few years ;)

Gru :D

Virtuoso Thanx man and yup I'm loving the rig

ok here's something I've been testing to see how flexible the rig is looks good to go me thinks. Now for the real animations :)

crits/comments and all that good stuff!

06 June 2003, 07:50 PM
hey man Its looking really only comment is on the throw that his arms shoult arc down so quickly, I think that would cause the boulder to go down to... I might be wrong tho, still looking really great man!

Love the animatic to... soundfx rule, and it seems like good pacing for this battle!

keep up the good work

06 June 2003, 08:19 PM
Lil 'd' thats tight, I like how you show him mustering up some more strength to even throw it.

Nice job.

06 June 2003, 11:56 PM
Looking good.

His other foot seems rooted in place. maybe have firstmove back and other move forward

Or maybe have him take a step back with both feet then come forward on same as in clip.

Need more nap in the throw. hold it a touch longer as if gathering strength then snap forward.

06 June 2003, 10:08 AM
Hi Tito!

Looks really amazing! Maybe the battle could get more epic if you had the right musical score ;)

Great feedback guys, thx much! I have a good amount of plans for adding weight and proper follow-thru in my real animation, but for now a new test, still tweaking the poses and haven't touched the f-curves yet, but the general motion is there

My Fault
06 June 2003, 01:15 AM
Oooh, looking great! The thing that jumps out at me initially is that he never seems to land on his front leg or use it to push himself back with after his first attack. The weight of the weapon would certainly help, but I think having that front foot push backward before the lunge would make it look even better.

Keep it up!!

06 June 2003, 03:04 AM
Thx My Fault made some huge improvements in the downward swing speed and general step momentum. C&C at will.

My Fault
06 June 2003, 04:06 AM
Looking good! I would still try to hold that front right foot on the ground a bit more when he pushes back before the lunge. Just enough so it trails the right knee going back. Then it will look like he is using his foot to push back. I think that would give the whole character a bit more weight in that move.

BTW, I absolutely love that final lunge, especially when his left foot goes forward after he extends the lunge all the way. This is something we were taught when I was learning Pentjak Silat many, many years ago. Really makes it look like he is putting a serious amount of force into it. Brilliant!!!

06 June 2003, 08:46 AM
I totally agree with My Fault. I also think that his torso is a bit too static during the final lunge.I'd let it snap a bit forward and back while lunging.

Looks VERY promising though!

06 June 2003, 08:35 PM
if I may say somethink , U should add some animation to the top of the arms (like bruce lee )
Are U taking the pose form Your head or useing some books or resources ?

06 June 2003, 02:16 AM
Hi lil,
I might overlap some statements made in the above posts, but there goes.
In the first slash, the right foot slides quite staticly instead of stepping. The moment the staff hits it's most forward point, then should the foot land with a hard step. Supporting the force of the slash.

The stab at the end then.
I think the arms should be stretched more, the left wrist looks quite painfull after the thrust. :surprised
What really hits my attention is the way the left foot snaps forward. I think you should have to keep it in place - so to stretch the leg more aswell. Maybe let the pelvis go lower aswell.
The step of the right foot is there, so that's ok, the heel might strike the ground with more force and angle though.
Also while the stab is being executed, the torso should lunge forward. It kinda looks like his back is fixed.

I hope it helps,
Have fun!

impressive character setup...!!
