Hello All,

Its been 2 years now as a level designer/artist in the games industry and i'm looking to broaden my horizons. I've always wanted to get into matte painting. I've been searching arround and have followed some tutorials to help get me started. Just wondering if I could get some feedback from my first painting. It isnt complete, just started arround an hour ago so be kind :P.

oh btw its all done by mouse, my tablet broke :(

Honestly, it looks like you are thrashing around pretty fruitlessly if this is all you have to show for 3 hours work.

You have no foundation under this, and so you're trying to paint with no clear goal on what you are trying to achieve. Your perspective is off, your composition is very static and boring, and your colors are garish and unrealistic looking.

I suggest you stop, and back up to the beginning. What are you attempting to render? Is this a cove? An island? What?
What is this scene? Morning? Before or after a storm? What IS all that blobbly stuff you are detailing? Stop it. Detailing is like icing on a cake. You can't start icing it until you've prepared and baked the cake. This poor cake isn't even blended well at this stage.

Once you have a CLEAR concept to render, do it right. Make a couple Compositional Roughs, and establish your main Focal Points, and how you want to direct the eye around the canvas to see them.

Then, USE REFERENCE PHOTOS! Good mattes have to be visually believable to be successful. You need an established horizon line, and a clean perspective. This piece is just too fuzzy looking and guessed at to succeed without a LOT more work, which for the time that would be required, would be better spent starting over with a clearer idea of what you are going to create...

Or you can keep painting over this piece bit by bit, to prove perserverence and dedication, but you won't improve your skills or your speed very much, because you still won't have a solid foundation.
