Hello everybody! Sorry for my poor english :)
I'm a silent user from about one year of this forum. Just one comments in one year! :) So here is a pic of my first year school project, the goal was to create some pictures of an utopic city.

More pics on my website in 3dpictures/masaya :

Have a nice day! :)

The Wireframe of the scene, the volcano is a displaced plane :)

05-28-2003, 08:41 PM
uhhh... that's freakin sweet!!! nothing really to say other then nice textures and composition. maybe depth of field would have added to the image.

05-28-2003, 10:17 PM

05-28-2003, 10:18 PM
no idea what that is.. but it looks pretty sweetass. kinda reminds me of a spider thingie. :)

05-28-2003, 11:38 PM
Intriguing and impressive. I really love the other shots also on your site  The smoke is very well done, what app do you use? Definite plug for technical prowess and originality. [Plugged]

05-28-2003, 11:47 PM
I like it! The 'abstract' vehicle is very original. I agree that maybe some depth of field is needed?

05-28-2003, 11:48 PM
Yes, nice image. Very impressive!

05-29-2003, 12:02 AM
Wow!!
that smokes an image right.....

isnt it:surprised

05-29-2003, 12:14 AM
Thanks a lot for the replies!!
All pictures were done with Maya 4.5 and Mental Ray, Some Fluids combined with some low quality photos and a lot of painting on photoshop were used to create atmospheric effects and lava :))

05-29-2003, 12:14 AM
OMG hey man this is great. but i have to agree with johnnyMac i think some depth of field would help a little, but with out it the models and scenes look great.
 :buttrock:

05-29-2003, 12:22 AM

most impressive!

05-29-2003, 12:49 AM
wow... first project huh? nice.

love the displacements

05-29-2003, 01:16 AM
Great Picture!
Please: do not destroy it by applying some stupid DOF! It would make your whole scene look small. It doesn't fit at all!
Depth of Field is just like Lensflares. Too many people use it too often... :hmm:

05-29-2003, 01:17 AM
Nice work! I really like the textures!:D

05-29-2003, 01:20 AM
Gotta ask man, how'd ya do those killer plumes??

They have a great pyroclastic-look to them...

Sprites?... Fluids?...

They look great!

Let us know!

Like Vanilla Ice, and Paul of VFXTALK.com says: "Break it down!" :) hehe...

05-29-2003, 02:11 AM
Very nice! I too was attracted to the smoke.

05-29-2003, 02:27 AM
im pretty sure the smoke in the background is an image. the hazy smoke is photoshoped, sure, but the big plumy smoke is from a photo

05-29-2003, 02:35 AM
I don't know what the hell that is, but it's friggin awesome!!!!

:bounce: :applause: :applause: :bounce:  :buttrock:

05-29-2003, 02:37 AM
Checked ur gallery, MAN!! Great concept. Very massive and vast. Yes on XerC, no DOF. Hmmm... u really never have to use lens just to "boost" ur realism in a picture.

05-29-2003, 03:51 AM
Nice image. Well done:thumbsup:

05-29-2003, 03:56 AM
Ok, um .... HOLY FREAKIN' CRAP!!! That is a great image, Fine work work!

05-29-2003, 05:09 AM
Excellent job.........

05-29-2003, 05:47 AM
Man, you've got a very strange vision of an utopic world :)

To be constructive I'd say that I like the smoke at the bottom but it masks the horizon and waste the impression of depth.
It's like we're over the clouds, I can't really tell...
Would it be possible to add trees or something? Or simply make that smog less uniform by adding smoke plumes if we're really high in the sky.

Anyways, great design and dynamism!
Keep up the good work!

05-29-2003, 05:48 AM
GREAT WORK:thumbsup:

05-29-2003, 06:47 AM
Gawd, that's a keeper!!  Super nice!!

05-29-2003, 06:59 AM
Yes, nice image. Very impressive!

05-29-2003, 08:16 AM
Really nice sence of design. Greate textures and shaders. Greate sence of lighting and composition, as well as knowledge of what make a good image.

I always thought that contrast in shapes brings great experience to the images. Those machines look so gentle but yet so huge. Nice designs!!! 5 stars:thumbsup:

05-29-2003, 08:17 AM
People and dont forget to visit his site. This is not the best image from his projects. Some more amazing stuff there. Gongrats on your first project!!

05-29-2003, 09:09 AM
I would like to thanks again everybody for the replies!

sorry for my pooooooor english

Poopinmymouth / ragecgi : In the begining of the project I used a lot of fluids for creating smokes and plumes effects, but rendering time were too long (about 2 or three hours to produce a great eruption) to finish before the deadline) :( so i decided to create smoke effects combining some low quality fluids / low resolution photo / and a lot of painting into photoshop :)

My city MASAYA is a sort of terraforming unit, if you want more information, there is a lot of concepts, a shootingboard, and other pictures on my website :)

Have a nice day all !

that's very clever man, compositing the low fuid & photos  it really works and looks freakin awesome.

i have browsed through your Masaya page and quite impressed by the way you come up with concept and executing it.

please post more here, like DSedov said there are other rockin stuffs. i personally like no 05, 06 and 012

05-29-2003, 10:16 AM
I like the detail of the model you have made, but the picture as a whole looks a little confusing.

05-29-2003, 10:35 AM
I agree, the design is really great, and the quality as well, but it's rather confusing.

As for the depth of field I don't agree with the others. Depth of field is used when at least one object is relatively close to the camera, while the scene is on a huge scale...
we don't use depth of field on the moon just because it is closer than the other stars huh? :shame:

grrrrreat job (first year? what will you do in the last one? :D )

05-29-2003, 01:13 PM

Great work!

can you give me some mental ray settings if its possible? ( i cant imagine how to get such a great style which also looks PR ;) )

did you use effects like GI (what about the photons??) or finalgathering? how many lights? what lights?

i would cut my cock to learn to handle mental ray as good as you can :p

05-30-2003, 09:44 AM
Hii! All this replies make me happy :)

skatebowler86 and DSedov : I will tell you waht inspire me when I was searching the concept for MASAYA: insects :)) I was trying to give motion to my city, and insects were the main reference, particularly the Rhysse noirâtre, with it ability to parasite others insects (ability, i turn in the power of cooling volcano). The problem was that it was ugly to have a city in one part, so I've separate the head (Module Principal- La Ville), thorax(Modules Energétiques), abdomen (Module de Ponte). :)

Here is a link to see what is a rhysse: http://www.lesinsectesduquebec.com/insecta/25-hymenoptera/megarhyssa_atrata_lineata.htm

Benedikt: Iwill explain soon how I did to create the lightning and the texturing :) but it's very simple :)

And I'm going to post some view of the modules without texturing, in order to see what they are :)

05-30-2003, 10:03 AM
Yuk... that insekt is really ugly.. I hope they dont live in California =)

05-30-2003, 10:04 AM
wow, im very glad about this ;)

05-31-2003, 03:04 PM
Je comprend pas comment tu as fait tout ca mais tu l'a fait.
J'ai du mal à le croire mais je le vois alors je le crois :)

Ils ont tous ton niveau ds ton école :buttrock:

not very utopic there buddy, i hope you failed because if your generating something that doesnt look like its supposed to you get fired, so try again, have a good day

06-01-2003, 12:13 AM
 Very very nice work man.
Thats comin from someone like me who
know how hard it is to put a scene together like
that in Maya. I love the use of the materials
and the model's complexity is wonderful.
It really gives the viewer the sence of scale
of the scene. Truly beautiful work man. ;)
Hope to see more soon.

I think too that's it's a weird comment :hmm:

dazrenius: yes I'have used Mental Ray for rendering :)

I'm working on the last pic, It is not very easy because of a difficult ice effect propagating from the volcano through the land.
I will upload some shoot without texturing of the modules.

Have a nice day all :)

06-02-2003, 09:19 AM
its funny and ironic how some people say really anoying negative things, and then have a signature that says "I hate annoying people":surprised

Hello Kaiser_Sose :)

no sorry, i didn't find the time too explain this correctly, i have got a lot of things to do (personnal work and school ones) and it's hard to have a little pause to make a tutorial or something else. But I will do it, it's in my playlist (with some others tut) ;)

I wanna know if the smoke and lava are from mr .... I suspect you used some sort of plugin like afterburn for max ..... if you designed the smoke in mr ..... what the hell are you doing sit down on a school desk !! :surprised
