You may have heard of a "101 goals in 1001 days" list. If not, google it. Well one of my goals is to make 101 digital images of the same object, using the latest image as reference for the next. I wanted it to be something that gave me a lot of options, brought technical and artistic difficulties, and would keep me interested for the duration of the goal.
So I chose to paint a woman. The object, of course, being to develope my drawing and painting skill. I have tried it before with my "Dead City" comic, but time constraint made it impossible to continue down that path.

The images range from 20 minute sketches to 3 hour paintings

"Storm" stands for Robert Storm, which is my author and blog name.

The first image was mostly made to position her.


The second to fourth to test shadows


Then the first try (on st. Patricks Day :rolleyes: ):

testing a technique I later dubbed "Crappy"

Lineart is something I intend to work on a lot more. I put the most effort into making the face more symmetrical.

Tried some more face-work. Please observe that I haven't started any real work on details like fingers. Still basically working on proportions.

The Championship was on (Guys, though). Started to work a little with shade and light. Pretty satisfied with the legs. Not so much with the hands.

Maybe an explanation. A law was put forth in Sweden to make it possible to eavsdrop on all internet traffic passing our borders. People called a "Stasi wet dream", meaning not even the nazis had that much insight into peoples lives in WWII. This was my interpretation.

Only natural then to paint the resistance, based on a character in the British sitcom "Allo, allo", and a movie if you can figure it out.

Swedish Midsummer party. This is a traditional dress for the northern parts of Sweden.

This started of as a greek godess, and ended up as a semi indian girl. Go figure.

So after two hours of work and not saving once, since saving, as we all know, is only for the weak and non-vikings, I had a Photoshop hang-up, loosing all my work. This was an angry 30 minutes sketch after the incident.

This was a remake of what would have been nr 14, had I saved my work

Woke up to a chilling 8 degrees Celsius. Needed some warmth. I was really happy with the result on this one, except for the usual crappy hand.

Nothing was right with this one. Perhaps 45 minutes of "Crap, I'm late for the party"

So one of my other goals was to walk for 12 consecutive hours. This was the imaginary doctor calling me a fool afterwards. I didn't go to the doctor. Should have gone to the Police, because my feet were killing me. Heyoohh!

Lara Croft was a given. But as a joke I hid her two famous "assets". Pretty happy with this one.

Went back to the drawing board, sort of, and did a muscle study, sort of...

45 minutes uninspired sketching.

Tried a different technique that went straight to hell. Explanation of the image: I wrote on my blog about how the government needed to stop all pigeons, since pigeons had been used to pass messages since WWI (and earlier), if they really wanted to read everything that everybody wrote. (It was satire, obviously)

First real success. 3 hours and a lot of youtube:ing Nico de Mattia.

Studied pants, basically. :D

That's it so far, 76 to go.

I should add that any technique tips and criticism that can help me develop my skills are most welcome.

Interesting project!
I'm not sure if you are doing this just for the "body count," or if you are actually wanting to improve your rendering skills. You're doing great with the former, not so good with the latter.
Not one of these drawings is consistent with the others, except in general pose. This would not be a big deal, except that your anatomy rendering is pretty poor, making this just 100 sketches of a girl-type figure in a certain pose.

Proportions, shapes, musculature, skeletal, these are all over the place. The general upshot of it is that you are drawing the bodies too long, the heads, hands, and feet too small, and leg calves are either overly chunky, or almost non-existent.

#21, where you drew and painted the general musculature, is the best of them all, because you took the time to try to be accurate (except for the teeny hands). Then it was right back to tiny heads and long, tubular legs...

Keep it up, if only to have the 100, but consider really working on improving your anatomy rendering while you add to your collection. You should really consider using a grid for consistency...

Thanks for the quick critique, CybrGfx! The reason for the 101 images, is mainly to get better at proportions, anatomy and clothes, and also overall skill. I was also interested in seeing if using the last image as reference for the next would help much. Don't really know if that is working out as I hoped.

Originally I thought I would keep the woman in the exact same position, but grew tired of it. Needed more options to keep me motivated, so I started to "move" her arms. At the same time, it was never my intention to make the exact same woman. I thought that further along I would test different sizes(e.g. fat), races(e.g. Asian, african) and styles (e.g. manga)

I will go back to #21 and see what I did right and try to keep it more consistent.

starting to look a bit better, proportion-wise.

I like the different settings and costumes you come up with. Especially since you are keeping the poses similar. Makes these fun to look at as a group, as well as individually.

I believe the word "AAARRR" is in order. "Front" arm is a little too long. But, you know, that would give her the edge in a sword fight. :cool:

You are making lame excuses, rather than trying to be more consistent and accurate in your rendering.

These are a cute concept, but think how much more effective they would be, if the viewer could look at it and say, "wow, that's good," rather than "Not bad, but her arm's too long," or "Nice zombie girl, but one side of her butt is way larger than the other..."

Consistency. Work on your consistency...
And yes, neatness does count...

heads are becoming smaller again... and your arms are slightly wonky in the last two.. I think the western bar wench is the best in the series...

...someone told me everyone has 10000 bad drawing inside before it'll become good... so you are definitely going somewhere.

Best advise Look at pictures more and try to understand what is going where and how... I think it is time for another muscle study about now :)

Keep hacking away at those 10000 :thumbsup:

dude what are you doing ....i know you said the reason for this is to get better at it but....i tinhk you should learn the fundamentals first ,,,LEARN...do some sketches, lots ,no colour not even on the computer, use a pencil and paper....the anatomy is not getting any better....if you want ill send you a pdf with a very good anatomy teachings ...if you want...message me.....

all the crits in the world cant help you if you dont get a real feel for it

It's an interesting concept however I don't see much progress with anatomy. When you do the pose for another pic, try pick something you know is a weak spot and work on it for that pic. So, If your weak point is leg muscle and composition, work on it. The next pic work on it again and choose something else, like clothing folds, next pic same thing.. Choose something and work on it. I see a lot of pics and some nice ideas but I don't see anything other than that. Make sure you are using reference too. Reference is the best way to learn how to improve your skills, no matter how much you think you don't need it.

Thanks, Lynch and Rebecca. I would also like progress to work a little faster, but life is what it is.
Took your advice and went back to more simple sketches, giving me more time to do more sketches.
