View Full Version : Animating breaking string

I am animating an object hanging from a string- string breaks. I have it all the way up to the breaking string. The string is an ncloth and I am using tearable surfaces. all is well except the string should recoil and bounce around after it breaks- My string is very calm. I hav toyed with all the approriate sounding dynamic attributes, like bounce, stretch resistance, deform ect but no go.
Any suggestions?

Also, I'm a bit old school, so I would use a spline IK setup which then uses a soft body curve to control the recoil you're looking for. Here is an excellent tutorial which I've used:

thanks for those 2 good suggestions. I'm thinking of handling it 2 different ways- the bottom of the rope- the part tied to the ducks foot behaves well as ncloth- I thin I'll render it and then animate the top poart as a soft body- which seems to jiggle well and then put them together in post- I might take a closer look at the spine ik tutorial you sent and add it if i dont get enough reaction/recoil

Duncan has a good video on the autodesk site about using constraints for grasping cloth. I would imagine that you could get some of your recoil from animating weights on the constraints.
