Could anyone explain to me a way to do a functional arm FK/IK rig with Maya 5? With those new tools, looks like it isn't necessary to do the 3-joint system anymore.

Yeah, i believe it works on the 3 joint system, Draw an IK from the shoulder to the wirst. Make Ik sticky in the attributes. U can use the IK/FK blend option in the IK handle options to switch btw IK and FK, i would suggest to animate the blend over atleast 3 frames for a smooth transition.
Usually for the hands, after u create the IK handle , u would contrain the wrist to a locator so that the wirst stays in place even when u move the hand or the body. Thats the purpose of an IK for the arm. Cheers - Modi.
