here is a simple test movie of rising smoke done in 2 minutes + rendering time completely in After Effects by a bloody beginner (me):

The simulation and rendering is done with Incense, an After Effects plug-in i'm developing.

The above test sequence renders at about 3-4 times the duration of the movie on a GeForce 8800gtx. Previewing is possible at real-time frame rates and depending on the complexity and resolution of the scene at least at interactive rates (~10fps). This allows for a lot more intuitive editing of such simulations than usual.

Very interesting indeed, looks very very good. Do you know if your specification of AE plugin is compatible with AE compatible hosts? Like Combustion and most notably Fusion?

AE is very old and has grown a lot over the years. The software design is not very elegant and the documentation does not compensate for that. On the other hand it allows you to do a lot, i.e. most of the time, there is some way to get things hacked in.
Considering that the portion of the code that has to deal with AE may be very low (<5% in Incense), the API isn't really that important, though.
But if you can, write OpenFX plug-ins instead ;)

After voxels, fluids, particles, expressions, questionable self shadowing in maya and huge rendertimes....I just registered.
