View Full Version : HMC #15 - Sachin Tendulkar

06 June 2008, 09:57 AM
Hi everyone !! :)

This is gonna be a great challenge, that's sure :bounce:

I am starting this thread with my entry for the Sports Icon challenge and it's -

Sachin Tendulkar

often referred to as The Little Master or The Master Blaster, is an Indian cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. In 2002, Wisden rated him as the second greatest Test batsman after Sir Donald Bradman, and the greatest One-day international batsman.

He holds several highly regarded batting records and is the leading scorer of centuries in both Test cricket and One-day internationals. He is one of the three batsmen to surpass 11,000 runs in Test cricket, and the first Indian to do so. He is the most prolific run scorer in ODIs by a margin of over 4000 runs and has scored the most runs in international cricket as a whole. He crossed 16,000 runs in ODIs on February 5, 2008 while playing against Sri Lanka in Brisbane, Australia.

So, I hv decided something for this, My production pipeline for this project is -

1. Model the whole body with proper topology (rig friendly wireframes).

2. Model the clothes and props for the character.

3. Model the base and background.

4. Arrange all things together and rig the body for desired pose.

5. Do some finishings according to pose and mood of the scene and preparing to export for sculpting.

6. Give more details on body, clothe, props etc.

7. Final compositing for submission.

That's what I hv decided to do, hope will manage all considering the time limit.
Your valuable C&C are always helpful for me to do much more better . . .

You wouldn't mess with him down a dark alley at night! Another good character.

06 June 2008, 08:13 PM
great choice dude! eager to see the updates..

06 June 2008, 03:06 PM
Boone - I won't !! nobody wants to mess with him :D

namnocilis - thanx !!

Now its time for first update, pretty late for this due to some fitness problem,

anyway here it is, I started working from head as always

06 June 2008, 03:54 PM
hey.. his head is slightly tilted in that front view reference image.. so watch out for that.. all the best..

06 June 2008, 09:03 PM
Good start, Deepam

yep, watch out for the angle, as Hellguardian said.

06 June 2008, 12:31 PM
hey.. his head is slightly tilted in that front view reference image.. so watch out for that.. all the best..

Thanks, well I am pretty aware of that fact.

Thanks Prithvi !!

Worked more on head

Looking Good so far.

06 June 2008, 12:43 PM
I took lots of time for head, tried to give as much detail as possible in maya, also the topology is very important for me. It is always difficult, if you don't hv proper reference, some photo ref have camera lens distortion which may cause serious problem if you are modeling a head.

Anyway, here is head completed, now I will start working on helmet. Any corrections about head will be pretty useful for me . . .

Hi deepan...good work...only one suggestion... if you are to do the same look as the picture has..keep in mind that the expression isnīt similar at the both sides...I mean the right side is different at the left side...maybe if you try to give the model the sense of that expression, will be good...if you considered this, sorry mi post...go ahead whit it...good luck...forgive my english

06 June 2008, 06:49 AM
Good going, Deepam......keep on

So far, no injury detected on Sachin (he's always injury-prone, isn't he?)

I wonder how you're going to model a 'tennis elbow' ;-)

06 June 2008, 12:52 PM
NINO - Thanks !! The expression will be change later, so its not the big issue yet.

prithvi - Thanks man !! Ha Ha ! Yeh he love injuries :D I think. The tennis elbow may create problem here too :scream:

I hv decided to leave helmet for now, that is not a big task to do.

Just studying about the measurements of the body, I will do body first now, little confused about adding clothes later or directly go for them (without body, which I was thinking for proportions)

06 June 2008, 07:43 PM
cricket players look real cool in their gear [even though I have no clue of the game LOL] - looking forward to more Deepam!:wip:

06 June 2008, 04:20 AM
Good luck on this one, you're doing great progress.

07 July 2008, 08:27 PM
Intervain - Thanks for visiting my thread . . about cricket - u should see Sachin while he is hiting balls in his top gear !!

The-Alpha - Thank you very much !! :)

Did some work on body, proportions are not set yet coz I am just modeling things now, when they all will be ready I will match them according to the need.

07 July 2008, 08:32 PM
Looking good,will you Zbrush/mudbox it after ?

07 July 2008, 03:31 PM
The-Alpha - yes, after full body completion I will export it for zbrushing :)

Here is a small update, worked on gloves, can't getting enough time constantly to work on.

07 July 2008, 02:57 AM
Woah, those things have some serious padding.

The only thing I could possibly crit is that the wrists seem a little wide, and the fingers are too pointed off. The gloves seem just a tad more squared off at the tip, and seem to bend downward just a little, if that makes any sense.

07 July 2008, 08:48 AM
WOW!! One of the greatest batsmen ever! I will be watching this!:buttrock:

07 July 2008, 10:10 AM
hehe you guys are so addicted to cricket I can't even believe. Personally I think it's quite boring...but as Intervain says the outfits are pretty cool. Looking forward to more updates!!

07 July 2008, 02:23 PM
Heads up!

HCR Sports Icon; The datelins is in ONE WEEK!(Julyt 31st 2008) (

07 July 2008, 06:22 PM
Kevin - Thanks for pointing that, I will adjust that when attach them to the body.

Anand - It's good to see you here :)

Albert - Cricket is not just a game, its religion in India. ;)

Roberto - Thanks for that, I am running at top speed :wip:

Worked on helmet, took much time then my expectation which is so expensive for now :argh: still more props to do, hope that I will finish them all till sunday.

07 July 2008, 06:15 AM
Hi Deepam, The helmet looks awesome! the gloves needs to be improved, the fingers needs to be a bit broader and it doesn't taper much towards the end like how it is done currently..try getting that cloth kind of feel to it with puffed look at the divisions, you could also do that in zbrush stage but i would have tried to get that feel to some extent in maya itself.. also you may have to make some changes to the left gloves.. as both of them have some slight difference

about the face, i personally feel that it is better to keep his mouth closed as it adds more to his character and if you are planning to keep the mouth open, then the teeth needs to be very realistic else it will look cartoony.. also the jaw area and all needs some work but that can be always done in zbrush.. since there are not much front side views that we could use for modeling and most of the study needs to be done from perspective pictures.. and the time limit, you are doing a really good job.. i admire it a lot and i too want to see you complete it.. waiting for the updates

07 July 2008, 05:48 PM
Hey Nitin !! Thanks for suggestions :) I agree about the gloves, fixed that is this update. About mouth - I will do some experiments with that in zbrush.

So here is the body completed, I know it is too late for this post, I don't have much time now for zbrush, will do it fast

07 July 2008, 02:13 PM
Oh man !! It is running out of time . . . and I am having some technical problems :banghead: with zbrush

Anyways, here is a quick update, after posing, used zbrush for that first time  , there are some problems in the clothes will adjust them all, hope will finish it in time.

07 July 2008, 12:53 PM
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS :applause: to all who completed their respective entries, it was really a nice and full of variety topic. Some great entries are there, like them very much !!

About my entry, it was a great experience for me :) . . no doubt
Learned a lot of new things, some new problems occured in zbrush, those I never faced before, will take care of them in future. First time used zbrush for posing, quite fun doing that, pretty powerful feature, if you know how to use it perfectly.
Also tried my hands on inorganic stuff(props) and those cloth wrinkles are a good study as well.

So, it was a pleasure to take this challenge, enjoyed it very much.

Best Wishes to all the participants.

07 July 2008, 01:14 PM
Congrats on finishing on time Deepam. Model looks good, esp like the attention to small detail you have given like the flag on his helmet. Great job.
