View Full Version : Simple Question

Sorry to bother you guys but it's a minor question and it's doing my head in.. I don't even know the keywords to search for this problem.. And piles and meters of text make me feel as if my nerves are going to explode.. So once again I come to you guys to enlighten me from another problem.. (

I'm doing mechanical animation this time.. where I've got a robot that has some thick wires instead of metal bones..

If you look at the picture.. you can clearly see two boxes.. and the large string with joints and an ik handle.. If i point constraint the right box to the ik handle.. It pretty much is perfect.. I can move the box and the string moves with it.. But I want to be able to do the same with the other box.. and to have the same effect on his side of the string..

so for an example.. if i'd wrap a string around my two hands.. i'd want to be able to move it with both my left hand and my right hand..

that's basically what i want to do here with these two boxes..

Use Spline IK instead.. create two individual bones and center each one at each box.. bind the spline to the two new bones..

parent the bones under each cube..

should work fine..

I am right now studying on how to use the IK Spline. After that I'll use your method.

thanks a lot

Your spline IK looks rather different from all the tutorials i've been through now (oh the horror)

And it looks like you made that picture just for me.. How did you make that IK Spline?

Or is that just a normal IK Handle?

Cause it'd be great if i could just use an IK handle.

never mind.. I've found my own way and it seems adequate for my character.. I just stickied the IK handle.. and Parented the root to the cube that hasnt got the handle near him..

thanks anyway.. The CGSociety is by far the greatest.

If you create a normal spline ik, then create a joint on either end of the spineIK chain. Select the two joints and the curve that drives the spineIK, and smooth bind the joints to the curve. Then you can control the splineIK with the joints. hope that helps!
