Hi everybody out there!
It took a lot to us to take the decision to partecipate in this challenge because we were under extreme pressure due to work reasons... but in the end here we are! :)

Our team this year will grow up a little and we all want to push our envelope and try to deliver our best.

In the next days we'll deliver our storyboard, animatic and full team list.

Best wishes everybody,
See you soon

ThE-ShiFT team

05 May 2008, 01:12 PM
Good luck!

05 May 2008, 01:19 PM
Thanks a lot and the same to you! :)

05 May 2008, 04:06 PM (

Hi everybody, since our final objective will be a short film, we prensent you the storyboard of it. From the footages and the whole story we'll pull out the trailer for the challenge! We hope that you like it!

Good Luck!

05 May 2008, 09:32 AM (

Hi and happy new week everybody! This is a collection of pictures representing the locations for our shooting...
We actually started today at dawn with the outdoor locations. We'll then move to indoor as our production designer finish to set it up. Our plans are to shoot for 2 days. Then we'll implement CGI aliens where needed...
ok..let's move on

05 May 2008, 09:37 AM
Hey Adib thanks a lot for your comments!
I'd like to take this chance to underline that we are aware of the short time we have to finish... so the short movie will not be our main target for now: we are shooting all we need to complete the short movie, but going to work on it's trailer first, then with more relaxed production times we'll finish the short movie wich requires more work.
Thanks again :)
bye...and good luck to you too!

05 May 2008, 05:19 PM
Nice !
if you finish in time it will be cool !

COFFEE IS OUR SECOND BLOOD MAN!!! he he he he! keep it up! the shif team is on the way for a new "BIG THING"

06 June 2008, 03:05 PM
Very cool.
Is it all real makeup or you tracked in Cg texture on the face?

06 June 2008, 03:18 PM
Hi grzesiekj, thank you and everybody else!
No we took pictures of the actor (no make-up) and modeled a CG head of him, but mixing with the skull of Emiliano. From all the pictures we had taken we camera-projected the textures onto the model, using xsi weightmaps to blend them seamlessly. Then we rendermapped the whole head and used that texture to paint the make-up you see...

More on this workflow in this veeeeery old thread here (except for the gradients part that we now substitute with weightmaps) :;action=display;threadid=6008;start=0

Oh and by the way that's Emiliano :)

PS: Nwiz thank you sooo much for your support! We love you :)
God bless you too...

06 June 2008, 06:58 PM
I hope you can make it on time!!
Looking uber-cool, Don't sleep too much!!

Fantastic use of lights.
Your cuts in general feel absolutely PRO!...and genuine film like!
Also the gamma and the colours on the images have a film like mood. Not easy to achieve in video works.

06 June 2008, 08:24 PM
Quality looks TOP notch. I have a good hunch that you guys will win.

Only comment is that it's a bit dark. Viewed it on one of my screens and it looked good....but on the other one (which is a bit darker due to a different manufacturer) everything except the sky looked black.

06 June 2008, 01:22 AM (

Tyson, OZ, redCigarette... thanks a lot, really....what can we say? Even these compliments alone means really a lot to us :)
Thanks also for the hint about checking the brightness: we already checked and corrected it...anyway we're going to pass everything to the color grading stage for the final milestones.

This is an almost finished shot we're working on...still animating, missing some drivel coming out from the mouth and, as I just said, still missing color grading.
Hope you like it...
Keep on everybody!

06 June 2008, 02:11 AM
Damn you guys are good.

Just watched your animatic again... you guys did a great job with the boards and editing on that, extremely clear at communicating what's going on. really looking forward to the finished piece!

06 June 2008, 02:38 AM
Wow. This is pretty awesome stuff!

How are you making sure the alien hand replaces the prop exactly right and looks like it is actually pushing the person's head? Did you do object tracking and the use that data to animate the arm?

Keep it up!

06 June 2008, 12:00 PM
Thanks guys! We're using every single second to deliver the best that we can, so your boosts are really our fuel :)
@ Mechis: there have been some hand made tracking on the head of the actor for two reasons: first of all the camera projection of the footage onto a rough cgi model of the actor contributes to the shading and reflections seen on the alien's hand...
Then having the model in place do helps with the hand animation itself, but we did it in helter-skelter, so the matching is really the result of a hand made tracking of the prop of the hand (you can see it in one of the previous posts). A particular effort has been put into mimic a movement of the hand to justify the actor's movement, so that it seems that the alien has really something to do with it.
The real prop has been removed with a frame by frame painting on the actor.
One last thing: having a prop on set to deform the actor's face had really helped with the overall effect.
Thanks again, and keep it up guys!

06 June 2008, 05:05 PM
man, this is freaky! i mean it in a good way of course. it reminds me my last session at dentist´s office, so i can imagine what that guy is going trough :). very good!

06 June 2008, 08:29 AM
Bastards. I think you should just give up. Seriously. This is just horrible. :D

Amazing work guys! Your establishing shot has a matrix feel to it-which is a good thing! I love the subtle grading on the hands of the Aliens palms...cant wait to see this bad boy moving!

06 June 2008, 06:24 PM
Autch! Top Nouch!!

06 June 2008, 12:24 AM (

Hey guys thanks again! This is the close-up version of the last shot we posted...hope you like it as well!
We'll be back as soon as we finish the close-up of the alien...

06 June 2008, 02:22 AM
Hey Digikris thanks for your're right the darker one it's more interesting, but what we posted the second time has to be color corrected and we'll close the blacks. The concern was: if we cc everything and then the conversion sets everything to darker we run the risk of loosing the whole image.
Anyway the Flash conversion works fine now so no problems...
Thanks again.

YOu have special make-up artists?

Recommend me some books on movie education, lighting, story, directing, materials that influenced you?

Thanks and keep the tornado going

06 June 2008, 01:19 PM

22 hours left! :surprised

06 June 2008, 03:44 PM
My eyes are getting distracted to the overexposed brightness coming from the right. Is it purposefully done? You can tone it down .

06 June 2008, 04:17 PM
Good point DigiKris! We're actually covering that lamp and the final aspect ratio will be 2.35 so I guess that will be almost completely cut away...Thanks for pointing that out mate!

Ivanisavich, FREEBUG thanks for taking care ;) Believe me we're running fast and are almost there! And also believe me there hasn't been one single job we worked on that has finished in a different way (far from the deadline)...and I don't know if that's good or not...or a standard in this world...
TheMiyamotoMusashi yes we had a make-up artist :) soon as we have some time to think about it we'll point out some references...Thanks for your comments.

We are going to post the semi-finished teaser in a few minutes :D

06 June 2008, 04:26 PM
Hey guys, It's looking great, can't wait to see the final film.
Question - are some of the aliens females? Cause they move in such a graceful way.

Good luck, get lots of coffe, you have 19 hours left :)

06 June 2008, 06:25 PM (

Ok here is an almost completed version of the teaser, also the trailer is almost completed...we're just fixing some minor things here and there, working in the titles and then we'll color grade the CGI shots...our colorist is finishing the live action sequences.
I's gonna be a nice night!!! :D

Hey mates thanks you sooo much for all your support! It's been a tremendous effort for all of us to bring this project from the ideas to the trailer and teaser release as I'm sure have been for every one in the contest.
Anyway for us the thing doesn't stop here: Inspection comes from an idea for a short movie we had like 7 years ago, the CG talk challenge has been the spark to take the project back into consideration.
We shot all the material we need to finish the short but used and worked only on the things needed to finish the trailer and the teaser. As soon as we get a little rest we'll be back to work on that...

Cheers and thanks everyone!

Same here. I shot 20 minutes worth of footage on RED. But i don't have a team like yours on top of it got sick for a week. Lost the momentum. But the shortfilm will be out for sure.

06 June 2008, 12:04 PM
Hey mates! We just woke up! A big thank you to all from all the crew here: your comments give more sense to all the efforts!

@ grzesiekj: we already watched hundreds of times your works so we couldn't be more glad of your comments :D

@ ivanisavich: thank you as well! I do not kid If I say that you're a real reference for us (it may be dated but I personally am still in love with your "sony style" ad and still wonder how the hell did you managed to get all that thing to work!).
We shot on Panasonic AG-HVX200. Our DoP made a great work to light with that and the colorist did the rest of the job. Clearly the last step the trailer had been put through its a grain addition and the vfx clips have been processed with a thing I'm sure you're familiar with: some subtle progressive (from center to border) channel shifting to fake lens diffraraction. Thanks again.

@ JurajMolkak: hahahaa thanks for your comments. Since you ask I must say that unfortunately the only shi-fi things we've worked on for now are just Eon and Uplift: first of all we don't live in Milan o Rome so it's already hard to get your hands on tv-ad works. Secondly the italian movie style seems to be so old and love-related that even thinking of producing a shi-fi thing it's almost forbidden. Maybe that's why we almost reduce ourselves to an amoeba status being on computers for shifts like 16-18 hours per day (please believe me I'm not overstating here) when we have the chance to work on the things we've grown up watching.

@ x70: your actually is the comment that made our day ;D Thank you soo much!

Thanks again to everybody else!

06 June 2008, 02:27 PM

07 July 2008, 10:49 AM
Congrats! Amazing work and the trailer looks very promising!

07 July 2008, 01:25 PM
Amazing work! I love the "environment modeling/texturing" workflow :)
I'v got one question about compositting. What is the UV Channel render pass used for? I know how to output it from 3d application, but I have no idea what can I do with it in post. Thanks for any tips and suggestions. And congrtulations for winning this Challenge for the whole team! :)

07 July 2008, 02:07 PM
Again thanks a lot everybody!!! It's an amazing and motivating feedback from you all!

@ Kris_Rusinek: very good question :) In the xsi's fxtree there is this spectacular and powerful node (but the very same kind of node is present in shake's the ColorX node) called "component parser" that gives you the chance to write expressions to warp an image using the color gradients of another (it can do tons of other amazing things actually we use it also to convert bumps drawn in the fxtree into normal maps on the fly).
As you can imagine the benefit of using such a pass is that you can even skip the color pass (containing the texture) and texture your model in compositing...or you can introduce new textures on the fly and see what happens.
We used the uv pass on the aliens to introduce some fractal and add complexity to the skin shading in just minutes...
BTW revision's ReMap does the same thing...but to write a simple expression it's a lil less expensive ;)

07 July 2008, 05:14 PM
Hey congrats to you guys too! Awesome piece. Cool to hear how the Eon challenge got you guys established too. Anyway was fun, we hope to do it again! Cheers

07 July 2008, 08:58 PM
Thanks for the answer... that uv channel post processing souds really interestig - need to try is as soon as posible :) Lounching XSI right now...

07 July 2008, 12:52 PM
Congratulations for your fully deserved winning, and my sincere appreciation for the wonderful job you are doing with this short!
