Does anybody know how to do this,
I hear there are different ways and am trying to do both.
Importing as a backdrop to match animation and ...
importing into my scene as an animatable plane.
if anyone can give me step by steps I would appreciate it greatly

there are two ways to get video-footage into your scene:
1. import a video-file as an imagePlane for one of your cameras
2. create a plane, assign a material to it and map a video-file into it's colour channel.
this way, you'll have to animate the frameExtension to get the video played back on animation-time!

Just to mention that you have two ways to start animated file texture...
You can use either file or movie texture node in Maya and you can either keyframe frameExtension to get the curve with which you can manipulate sequence speed in the graph editor or you can write a script like "file1.frameExtension=frame;" or frame+20 or something like
I prefer using scripts because with themm I can trigger the sequence start with some other attribute....or maybe make it stop in a specific frame, wait for something to happen and then trigger it again from where it stoped...all of this can also be done with the curve in graph editor but I like scripting....
