View Full Version : From Max to XSI tuts?

I am considering purchasing XSI and I wish to learn it as soon as possible, but I really don't want to hear somebody explaining what vertex is all over again. I see these Maya to Xsi intructions everywhere, but no Max to Xsi?
I am also intrested how does XSI lights compares to MAX lights? Does MR in XSI support photometric lights?

maya and xsi have slimar interface.. max is complite different. The rendring preset in xsi work not like in max - even mental ray. I was try to work in xsi (im max user..) and i have to admite that is very hard to ... aniamting in xsi seems to be much much more easier and flex then max - but rendering and shadering its thing to learn from 0. i didnt found any materials how to easy chenage from max to xsi.. wish to - if find it post it :)
wish you luck

I understand that alot things are very different, but still I wish for something to the point. I took a look at Digital Tutors, but theres alot of talk about general 3d methods.

Here are a couple of Max-to-XSI guides:
[EDIT: Removed second link. On closer look it was almost completely out of date. Everything it said you couldn't do, you actually can do.]

They're pretty old now, though, and I'm not very familiar with Max so I don't know how helpful they are.

You might also want to take a look at the XSI Basics guide ( It does have some basic 3D info but if you skip over that, it should give you a quick overview of the workflow, where commands are located, etc.

No photometric lights in XSI. Direct lighting overall is pretty weak as it is just a bit too basic. Hasn't stopped me from doing whatever I want, but could be better for sure. I'm hopeful for improvements in future versions.

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you guys going from 3d studio max --> Softimage XSI

I found the modeling to be a bit more flexible than max, i like it for the most part
Texturing was a whole new challenge, going from max to softimage i was trying to look for ways to set up options similar to material ID's i found clusters, and well, i didn't have much time to play with them, but got a simple texture projection on an object, and played with the shader/render interface a little. It looks alot more flexible and possibly 2x as confusing. Overall i'm considering the permenant jump.

After working in composer 2.0 i'll be happy to test out fx shaders later on :)
