Hello Jesse, I hadn't seen this one till now. The sketches and concepts are looking great, really solid stuff. I'm enjoying the egyptian theme to your peice aswell. Time to kick it into high gear!

lured in by offerings of magical technology...The king will choose an epic dynasty over the fortitude of his family...
05-01-2008, 09:01 AM
I like your stylized use of silhouettes to develop the composition. Very cool technique to get the concept down fast. Looking forward to more great stuff.

lots of work to do still....
havent even touched color yet. working on lighting the characters within the scene. once im happy with the tonal relationships, I will spend a day converting each shape to color, matching its original tone. THen textures still....
not much time left I know....
but I have been known to work long hours in dire situations.... ;)
winchester, love the FUNKY style & concept, this ROCKS!! :wavey:

Hi Jesse, the alien designs looks fun and I'm glad you didn't made them anything similar to Enki Bilal's 'The Immortel' creatures or Stargate's. The Human characters look interesting, how about adding the whole welcoming ceremony behind the Pharoah? Too much, I suppose.
Hope to see your colours very soon. About one more week to go!

I like your illustration style a lot. For example your characters are full of life, and the silhouette of the tree is simply beautiful. Wonderful stuff

Looks great, I love your alien characters, great style!
The two left characters, the girl and alien really look great.
I liked the pharao-look of the main character in your first concept too.
Waiting for more.

Nox-thanks. makes me even more enthoused to work through the night on this and get up to go to work. much appreciated.
jeromoo-workin in color tommarow....just a bit more work to be done achromatically....will post soon.
mdavid-i do love trees. in fact I have one tattooed on my left forearm. i think they are beautiful. for me, the tree is a wonderful metaphor to my approach to art. provide yourself with the nutrience needed for daily growth. give back to the environment from which you feed.
SaphireS-thanks. comin right up....

finally through my achromatic stage. everything is lit, and textured. Im sure as I move into color, things will need to be adjusted but for the most part, I am satisfied with the tonal relationships. I saved this image off and will have it on top of my working file as I start to color, so I can click it on and off to verify that I am maintaining tones as I assign color to shapes.
cant wait to start color!!!!!

oh this was fun and easy going. less challenges here then when I was working tonally. I love working with color. I think that in the past, out of excitement, I have jumped into it too quickly, at the expense of my tonal relationships suffering. So this was a good approach for me I feel.
Essentially I started this stage by painting a little swatch. I wanted nearly all warm earthtones as you can see, complimented by vibrant blue. Once I was happy with my swatch I created an action to adjust the sky to the preffered orangy-yellow. I used that action initially to color everything that is warm. ONce I ran the action I would make slight adjustments to the layer for variety. This was my attempt at maintainting some unity. WHen I adjusted I kept things close to my color swatch.
Im pretty happy with this. But its not quite done. Over the next day or two I will be fixing little issues I notice. I have a small list as it is.
If anyone can see anything that bothers them, Id love to hear it.
Thanks for lookin....

Love the concept! Having the eygptian gods as Alien.. brilliant.
Excellent design on the Aliens, especially with their markings. I also like your style, reminds me of Prince of Eygpt and Titan AE.

this is pretty much there. With a few days to go, Im going to hold off on submitting until tomarrow. Id like to look at it with a fresh eye after getting away from it for a while, and make any last changes.

heres a detail of the queen and her new acquaintance...

As prophesied, the gods returned when the stars of Leo aligned with the Nile. This time their intervention would change the direction of the earths civilization for all time to come. Seneferka is an ambitious king, easily swayed by offerings of vast empire and power. He is easily manipulated . His wife, queen of Egypt, sees through the deception of the "gods" but does not have the political power to deny their offer. Before his time is done, Seneferka's intervention yields great monuments. The most impressive this planet has ever seen. But by then, that which he once valued the most, his family, has been tainted with the blood of an alien race.

Jess, great story
05-13-2008, 02:36 AM
Cool concept for your image, the alien designs are especially interesting. I like the two-tone painting sytle as well.
05-13-2008, 03:16 AM
It turned out really nice Jesse. Grats on the finish. The story is interesting. If i get it correctly, the wife is pregnant from one of those alien things!? craazzy!! :D
05-13-2008, 11:22 PM
Azagthoth-Thanks. Ive always been intrigued by the possibility of aliens influencing the ancient egyptian civilizations. Pretty cool stuff in my mind.
alexichabane-I appreciate that.
Fetus23-haha. thanks man. In the full res version its a little more clear that the queen is infact pregnant. By having the alien behind her, with his arm around her, I was trying to imply that there was something going on there. Trying to promote the viewer to question whos baby that is, with the answer leaning towards it being an alien hybrid.
This challenge has been a great experience. I am so truely inspired by all of you. There is so much amazing talent out there, I am energized to be involved.
Nice image Jesse, really cool toon style! Like the enviroment on your image! Congratulations on your finale!! Good luck And time for a cold beer!! Cheers mate!

I'm annoyed with myself for not following this thread more regularly. Your final image and story are superb. I love your drawing style and use of colour and light to create the environment. This is a really cool entry in this challenge and I wish you lots of luck with it
05-16-2008, 07:58 PM
Cool looking aliens. Great story. The expressions and the way the one alien is lurking in the shadows really does an excellent job of telling that story.
05-17-2008, 12:02 AM
nickjsky-Thanks. I originally really liked the visual language of the alien lurking in the shadows behind the queen, with her upper body coming into the light. I faced a bit of a challenge there with the alien design I chose. Because the tattoo like blue designs on them are so bright it was impossible to have him as conceeled as I had originaly imagined. So, I am pleased that you got this feeling from him, even with his bright blue give-away. THanks!
mdavid-Wow! Thanks a ton! I entered rather late in the contest. Kinda under the radar it would seem.
Ferx-Thanks a lot. Its red wine these days for me, not beer....but yes, CHEERS!
05-17-2008, 08:12 AM
that's good concept...I like the colors, the atmosphere and the characters.
liked the aliens, really neat.
nice idea but creepy about that anubis alien knocking that por girl up :hmm:
