Latest Update: Final Image: Waltzing at sunset (

04-15-2008, 09:35 PM (

Weeee... Another challenge! This is the stuff! Just returned from a major defeat at the Dominance War 3, where I failed to deliver an entry in time :( I just lost my motivation to finish the entry, even though I really liked working with the concept. Doing 3d is fun but also hard work. Well now I'm back and doing only 2d this time :) I don't have an exact idea yet, but this beach could be a nice stage. No sex on the beach though...

04-15-2008, 09:59 PM
looks like a perfect setting for a beach party :D

04-15-2008, 10:07 PM
bro .. looking at this ... i really need a vacation!! so very warm and mystifying!

04-16-2008, 12:23 AM
Hey Martin, nice to see you in this challenge my friend. For sure a lot of fun on this :D Hey, that is an awesome bacground, I love totally that image and the sky, cool !! really evocative!! Again, great start my friend and looking forward for more updates!! Cheers!!

04-16-2008, 07:02 AM
Ivy00: Yes, I actually have something like that in mind. But a traditional one :)

nwiz25: Thanks. Yes, it looks cosy, doesn't it? :)

Ferx: Thanks bro. I have some ideas for this, so watch this space :)

04-16-2008, 11:14 AM
Wow! Cool background! Can't wait to see what you'll do with it.

04-16-2008, 01:59 PM
Very pleasant and warm feeling out of that background. Looks promising!

04-16-2008, 10:15 PM (

Waltzing Matilda... My idea begins to form now :) Still some ideas to try out, but I definitely want to keep this dancing couple here.

04-16-2008, 10:17 PM
HornlessUnicorn: Thank you :)

harachte: And thanks to you too :)

04-16-2008, 10:38 PM
Absolutely gorgeous! You now what would really sell the piece. A Victrola on the right hand side, very romantic, and nostalgic! Possibly even a little picnic basket or table set with wine glasses and the whole thing. Just a thought.

04-16-2008, 11:41 PM
oh weeee a romantic private beach party :D , great stuff

04-17-2008, 12:50 AM
Hey Martin, that its looking really cool. Like the romantic atmosphere on the concept, great!! Perhaps you need to extend a bit the shadow to the right to looks a bit larger with a bit dramatic touch :D and a bit more back light over him ( no a critic, because this is your first pass on the couple :) ) Great work my friend! Cheers!!

04-17-2008, 01:53 AM
That is a beautiful, elegant idea. And the alien look about the guy is just perfect. Great stuff

04-17-2008, 04:06 AM
Beautiful indeed. On the one hand I would like the alien to have a different outline, to read more like an alien. On the other hand, i do love the smart look it has. Hmm. Finding a compromise between those two could be difficult. Hope you pull it off, specially with that gorgeous pallette. :)

04-17-2008, 07:09 AM
sasquatch70: Thank you :) Yes. I need some kind of music in the scene, and I already have some ideas ;)

Ivy00: Thanks. Yes, you actually got me started on this :)

Ferx: Many thanks, champ :) I'll correct everything, when the final concept is done :)

mdavid: Thank you :)

GaeasHerald: Yes, I thought the same thing. I found some photo references of people dancing, so the male alien still looks a bit human. I'll try improve this :)

04-17-2008, 07:20 AM
Awesome! I love the simplicity of the composition! Don't add too much to it. It's absolutely beautifull.

One thing - I'm sure you'll do it anyways - don't forget to add some reflections (and highlights) on the water.

04-17-2008, 09:05 AM
A shame to read about your dominance war image, that was an interesting character that..Though i'm no modeler i would imagine the skin texture you came up with would have been difficult to reproduce in 3d..In anycase it looks like you made ammends with this beauty.

I had to laugh about the "no sex" thing..It takes me right back to an advert about wearing protection whilst engaging on the the man pulls out sun glasses. Very apt in this location as the light is as bright as bright can get :P.

Nice warmth

04-17-2008, 09:33 AM
looking really cool :) the soft little waves look great! nice mood

04-17-2008, 09:59 AM
That's a very romantic concept, it reminds me a bit of Jack Vetriano's paintings. Good luck!

04-17-2008, 11:01 AM
HornlessUnicorn: Thanks :) Yes, I won't add to much elements in this one. That would certainly break the "silence" :) When I'm done with the concept, I'll fine tune all details.

LightSovereign: Yes, that was certainly the worst, that has happened to me. Normally I always finish my work. I won't make a mess out of things, so no sex... on the beach.

Neubius: Thanks :)

Pearlyking: Thank you :) I think I still need something to make the scene more weird or so. Maybe adding dancing footprints, that comes out from the ocean or something. Or a hole in the sand.

04-18-2008, 09:43 PM (

I added some moons to make the world seem a bit alien and still recognizable as something earth-like. I think the scene should be kind of common ground for both alien and human. In the distance there is a city, maybe the home of these two. I also added an old phonograph as the music. I don't think I need more elements now.

04-19-2008, 07:08 AM
Hi, Martin!

Great image! Not sure about the planets and the city... Maybe 3 planets is too much?

When seen through an atmosphere the darkest (shadow) side of the planet (or moon) merges with the surrounding colour (or the shadow is the same colour).

Anyways - love your concept, keep it up!!

Silence speaks :)

04-19-2008, 01:15 PM
Nice! Makes me think of Jack Vettriano in an alien sort of way.

04-19-2008, 01:45 PM
waltzing at the beach ... sighhhhhhhhhhhhh ... ...
the mood really rocks man! ... i guess in order to capture that warm sunset look on the alien .. a good amount of SSS for his head n feet .. wat do you think bro? just an idea ..
love this a lot! clearly my fav! :p

04-19-2008, 03:50 PM (

I'm happy with the basic concept of this entry, so I have started with the detailing now. Ocean and sky have been reworked this time. More to come.

04-19-2008, 03:52 PM
coooool details man!!

04-19-2008, 04:05 PM
HornlessUnicorn: Thank you :) I changed the moons, so they blend better with the sky now. I actually knew, that they have to blend into the sky colors. :argh: Thanks for reminding me :) I'm in the thinking box regarding the city as well.

Paul4wood: Thanks :)

nwiz25: Thank you, thank you and thank you. You really catch the mood of this piece :) I have begun detailing everything now, and I will sure give these two characters a complete rework.

04-19-2008, 04:28 PM
Such a romantic scenery! I would like to be the one on that beach dancing with some outer space creature! :P Nice lighting and composition! Looking forward to see more!

04-19-2008, 04:41 PM
Donglu-LittleFish: Thank you :)

04-19-2008, 10:08 PM
This looks gorgeous, Martin! Serene and poignant and alien and almost surreal at the same time. I don't think the planets are too much, but with them, you've already shown adequately that it's an alien world. You don't need the city. Not having the city lent more to the surrealness and the mystery of the piece, while having the city took some of that away.

One area that still could use some work is the beach. It's really smooth and is reflecting light like glass. If could use some waviness as the sand won't be ever. It could use some wet areas where other waves lapping up against the shore have dampened it. It could use a lot of footprints and other spots where their passage has kicked up the sand.

And lastly, this is just a little thing, and just opinion, but I think it would give the piece more flow if the front right wave curved inwards more to echo the rest of the curves in the water instead of straightening out and matching the straight lines of the shadows on the ground. What you have now is fine, I just think more curves would be stylistically more interesting without having anything other than subjective taste to back that one up! :)

Anyhow, great work, keep it coming!

04-19-2008, 11:06 PM (

Just a small update. I removed the city and did some work on the characters.

04-19-2008, 11:21 PM
walrus: Thank you. :) You're always great at helping with a lot of useful feedback

The city is now removed and the moons are toned down a bit. I think this setup works.

Oh yes. The beach needs a rework pass, and I have already planned your good suggestions  In the area where the waves comes in, the wet sand becomes a bit reflective. (I did some photo research on this).

I see your point. If I change it, I would bend it towards the shadow, so it continues the curve from the shore line.

04-20-2008, 01:35 AM
I'm loving how this image is turning out. The old-fashioned gramophone is perfect. The only point I would add involves a few small wet patches of sand near the edge of the water - to show where a previous wave came in and drained back - but I see from your comments that you are already thinking about that!

The mood of this image is wonderful

04-20-2008, 06:46 AM
Martin - I'm glad my comments were useful! I have one more I forgot to add earlier: The main characters are backlit, so don't forget to add some nice rim lighting to them in appropriate places. You've already got some on him, but don't forget her hair (backlit hair tends to look a bit like a halo - find some good references and you'll see what I mean.)

04-20-2008, 12:51 PM
Hey Martin, really awesome work my friend, love the whole atmosphere on the image, ultra cool!! , one of my favorites for sure! great!!. I know you are working on the details, and particular on sand details :D The sand on a beach has two principal zones, the wet zone: more compact and bit reflective. The foot prints on that zone are well and sharp marked. The dry zone: more loose and bumpy, with more contrast cause the bumpy surface but not reflective, the foot prints are smooth. Ahh and dont forget the mix zone between the two principals :D ( But the most important area is where you put the cooler full of beers :D :D :D).
I think the shadows need fade a bit with the distance, for a more realistc touch, more sharp close the cast objects and bit blur far the cast objects. Only some comments :D Again, superb work!! Cheers my friend!!

04-20-2008, 01:45 PM
Hey Martin! You have a very good image here! I like the colors and the composition. The city is good and it would be good to see better the central planet (framing the characters). The water is perfect!

04-20-2008, 01:49 PM
mdavid: Thanks for the feedback :)

walrus: Yes, you're right. I have some rim light on her left side, but it can be hard to spot in her face. I believe that there actually would be some rim light on her right side as well. Her hair and dress would have some translucency here.

Ferx: Thanks :) Yes, you're right about everything. The shadows at this time are only mirrored black versions of the characters and phonograph for concept use. I'll correct these together with the sand.

04-20-2008, 01:51 PM
medunecer: Woops! You're quick  Just posted...

Thanks :) The city is gone for good. Did'nt like it that much. The central moon is maybe too dim now. I'll try something :)

04-20-2008, 10:04 PM (

I did some more adjustments on the characters and phonograph, and I started doing some sand work.

04-20-2008, 10:12 PM
Wow... if this picture is a WIP I can't wait to see the final image. This my dear friend, is an amazing piece of work. Wish I could to make something like that. Gongrats for you talent!

André de SOuza

04-20-2008, 10:15 PM
decosouza: Many thanks :)

04-21-2008, 07:24 AM
Hello Martin!

The water looks awesome! I'm not so sure about the dunes to the right. Maybe they're too high? I can't quite put my finger on it but something doesn't seem right about them. Maybe it's their angle in relation to the coast line? I don't know I loved the smotheness of the original beach. Nevertheless that's not a really big problem - great image!!

04-21-2008, 10:51 AM
HornlessUnicorn: I see your point. I wasn't sure about the dunes myself. The reason I put them there is, that I wanted some variation and texture. This way the shadows could look more interesting also. I didn't like that flat smooth surface, but I'll try flatten it.

04-21-2008, 11:17 AM

Martin! I think I know what the problem is - they're too "pointy", they look a bit like pyramids. Maybe you should try to give them a more "serpentine" i.e. "wavy" look and flatten them somehow. The best way would be to check some pictures of dunes on a beach.

All the best,

04-21-2008, 12:05 PM
HornlessUnicorn: I actually did use a reference photo. But was a very large beach, which almost developed into desert, so the dunes looked rather like a... well a desert. I'll flatten them now.

04-21-2008, 10:01 PM (

I think these flat dunes work better. Now I'm working on some footprints in the sand.

04-21-2008, 10:10 PM
awww love the old gramophone :) this is coming along beautifully

04-22-2008, 01:38 AM
Wow this is great, I especially like the background. I like how you rendered the water and the sands. Maybe a little more color to the female dancer it seems like she's little too close to the color schemes of the bg, just few touches of color to help set her apart more. But overall beautiful work.

04-22-2008, 05:21 AM
This scene is truly beautiful and romantic! May I suggest adding some small alien shells on the beach? More footprints will make the scene more convincing so we know they danced all over the place. How about a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket next to the gramophone?

04-22-2008, 06:00 AM
really beautiful and warm image:)
nice work!

04-22-2008, 06:47 AM
Ivy00: Thank you :)

saturniaus: Thanks :) Yeah, you're right. Normally the sky would have a color gradient towards blue in the opposite direction. I that case she would have a touch of blue. I'll look into it.

jeromoo: Thank you :) I'll try your suggestions.

notec: Thanks :)

04-22-2008, 07:23 AM
martin , everything is coming very nice!! i mean wonderful!...congrats!!! ....maybe shape of birds in the sky ??..maybe not the image is already super poetic..

04-22-2008, 07:26 AM
Hi Martin,

Gorgeous image! Beautiful color scheme, beautiful concept. Love the subtleties of it, simplicity and minimalism! I wouldn't add any more characters or objects...
Smaller softer dunes are working better. I would also be careful with too much foot prints, actually, I would soften them up a little... Right now they seem to be grounding characters too much, taking away some of that dream like surrial quality...

Nice work, Martin! :applause:

04-22-2008, 08:27 AM
Wow the sea looks cool. I think the sand to the right looks better in your earlier work in progress examples though.

Characters look good as well

04-22-2008, 08:33 AM
Great work, Martin! I'd say that the dunes look better now. But above all don't get iritated by all the, sometimes contradictive, remarkes and crits and stay true to yourself :) You're the one who holds the "brush".

I'm sure this image will be awesome in the end.

All the best,

04-22-2008, 10:38 AM
Jaba153: Many thanks :) Birds could be a nice addition.

musi: Thank you :) I'm not finished with the footprints yet. I'll decide what to do with them, so they fit the scene best.

pkneeshaw: Thanks for the feedback. I didn't like the flat smooth sand, so I just followed my own feelings about it. :) The rounded dunes looked best to me.

HornlessUnicorn: Thank you :) And I do...

04-22-2008, 04:30 PM
Aww this is really cute! I love it! The mood is great!

04-22-2008, 04:52 PM
Great atmosphere to the scene, the gramaphone is a nice touch.

04-22-2008, 05:02 PM
Pegahoul: Thank you :)

handlebar: And thanks to you :)

04-22-2008, 09:28 PM (

Some tweaking this time. I feel this is close to completion.

04-22-2008, 11:44 PM
the sunset colors are amazing .. the camera shot is very beautiful .. great choise :applause:

04-23-2008, 01:51 AM
Hey Martin, great my friend, love the "feeling" on the sand !! great work!! and again, love the incredible mood and atmosphere on your image!! superb!! ( ahhh and great shadows!! :D ) Cheers my friend

artizakO: Many thanks :)

04-23-2008, 08:14 AM
Still keep coming back and to look at that water you've painted there. It's fantastic.

04-23-2008, 08:19 AM
beautiful , no critiques, just beautiful.

04-23-2008, 09:32 AM
This is definately one of my favorites, I think a little evidence of marine life would be a nice touch but not nessesary, it's working fine for me :)

04-23-2008, 09:45 AM
Very romantic and a bit melancholic... i like this picture.

04-23-2008, 10:23 AM
pkneeshaw: Many thanks :) I must admit, that I have a thing for oceans. I just love painting them in 2d and modeling them in 3d. There's just something magical about it. :)

editablepauly: Thank you :)

Pearlyking: Thanks :) The sign of civilization has been an issue earlier in this thread. At the moment I have no plans for that. I like the sense of sanctuary or free space in the scenery :)

badoero: Thank you. :) You nailed the feeling behind this piece perfectly

04-24-2008, 09:40 PM (

In a universe where alien-human relations are disliked, who wouldn't like to their own special place to be in peace?

04-24-2008, 09:46 PM
So this is it :) I don't feel I can do more with this piece, and I like it, as it is now. I think this entry has been the most satisfiering project to work with for a long time :) Thank you everybody for your encouragement and feedback  And keep those brushes and polygons flowing people. You're all masters of art...

04-24-2008, 10:24 PM
great final image I love the mood and I think if you did try to do more with this piece you could end up ruining it.
good luck

04-24-2008, 11:13 PM
A very mature pallette for a very mature concept. The bottle of champagne, the sweet colors, the sound of the ocean mixed with a soft waltz melody.
Flawless Martin!

04-25-2008, 06:34 AM
DyingArt: Thank you :)

GaeasHerald: Thanks :)

04-25-2008, 06:22 PM

Beautiful piece of art. I enjoy very much the perspective created by the waves, and the color scheme. Good luck.

04-25-2008, 07:09 PM
Beautiful indeed, lovely warm, 'safe' feeling, romantic without beeing cheesy in the slightest. Well done!

04-25-2008, 07:51 PM
Part of being a good artist is knowing when to stop. You've got it. Lovely, evocative, romantic, wonderful entry, Martin. The details, teh lighting, that sky (I love romantic skies like that) and the water details are especially well polished. Congratulations! :)

04-25-2008, 08:20 PM
Fascinating work indeed. I love the colors, composition and the work on the clouds is really great.

04-25-2008, 08:29 PM

04-26-2008, 02:02 AM
This is a superb entry - sweet, romantic and made all the more powerful by the story you put with it. The mix of old-world charm and alien is wonderful and works in a way which is as unexpected as it is somehow perfect. I love the way you painted the ocean too. Good luck with the judging

04-26-2008, 05:50 AM

05-02-2008, 11:32 PM
Fantastic entry! How elegent!
Way to go!

05-03-2008, 03:24 AM
Congratulations, Martin! I wish there are some footprints leading up to the beach, for the sense of them walking the way there to have a romantic time with each other. But a minor nitpick! Congratulations again! :D

05-03-2008, 04:22 AM
Really great. I love the landscape and the water ripples.

05-03-2008, 07:29 AM
Martin this image is already a classic !!very very nice...composition mood and technique are just perfect!!

05-03-2008, 09:17 AM
Ferx: Thank you, come by and look any time :) No, I won't make any new finals. I just used my "concept01.., wip01.." -naming. I changed it to the right title in the post now. But it doesn't show up in the entries list though. Maybe I should repost the final again with the right title.

winchester: Thanks :)

saturniaus: Thank you :) I loved painting those.

Jaba153: Many thanks :) I really appreciate your kind words.

05-03-2008, 09:21 AM

So peaceful, so warm, so delicate. Really nice picture; interesting relation, but it's this grotesque of the image which I like the most.
You've also made a good effect by placing such small figures in this wide frame. It multiplies the impression of solitude. It reminds me an old painting by F. Goya (i believe it's called "the dog"). Nice work.

nwiz25: Thanks man :) I guess our entries are somehow related ;)

grooshka: Many thanks :) I think you nailed the essence of the picture pretty well
