this is a toon shaded render of the space diner that will act as an environment for my illustration, i still haven't draw the characters in the scene yet but i have a pretty idea of the mood i want to create and style im going for.

damit! the updating deleted where i described my idea so here it goes again..

my main idea so far is a space patrol escorting criminal alien but stopped at a space diner, as the sexy human female cop leans back to relax she gets eyed balled by a parade of aliens not knowing that the space diner is being sucked by a black hole. its all supposed to be comical and mainly cartoonish 3d.

that was the idea at the beginning but i just found out that i have like 23 days left.. you see, i thought the deadline was june 9... i have no idea where i got that from, anyways i might only make a maximum of 4 characters and 2 vehicles :) ill post the first character i made today right now.. :blush:

im not shure if im not supposed to upload from photobucket but since this images are not that important and are relevant to what i uploaded before its ok, i just have a little trouble getting images to the specified 150kb max :argh:

i don't plan to render the final image as a "toon" but i really like how it looks so who knows

Yeah I think the idea is really cool.
I will keep an eye here to see the rest of characteres but the scenario seems pretty cool already.

I think you will show the black hole from the central window right? In that case will be interesting how to play with the attention of the wiever, playing with the importance of the characters, situation, black hole etc... on the image.

marco i think you are gonna have to wait for that sexy female cop :D i was working on the body last night and maya crashed, i opened the file and the body surface was gone.. i was working with a mirror subdivision proxy :cry: w/e

thanks alot decosouza! i got some feedback from some other friends too, they said the black hole looks more menacing but the super slug outside makes the image im still not sure, hopefully more people chime in

well this image image is from the WIP space cadet which is the only one who appears to acknowledge the menace's presence whatever that might be
as you can see it still needs alot of work on the body and its missing some equipment, im trying to achieve a very cartoony look

Hey Sergio, the two scenes look really great, but i´m more for num. 1. :) I think it has more dramatic potential to see the threat out the window. The space cadet design is really cool!. Maybe more volume on the hands, now see a bit flat, like empty gloves :)I really liked the poses of the girls, maybe a tired waitress can be a nice addition to your image :D ( only a wish :D). Again, great work my friend !! Cheers :beer: ( Vas muy bien sergio, me late mucho tu idea, y creo quie puedes conseguir una muy buena iluminación dramática para el "comedero espacial" :D... ahora se me ocurrio, y que tal una que otra mosca alien ... :D las podrías añadir al final con photoshop despues de hecho tu render, pa no perder mucho el tiempo :D)

and another vote for image #1 :scream: ill take your advice about the flies and waitress because as you know i got rid of the "parade of aliens eyeballing the sexy space cop" because of time and the image does kind of need a little extra than what i sketched, but i have to start doing things really fast now because of time, hopefully not much quality is sacrificed.
I'll do the waitress at the very end if i still have time, must likely she'll be an alien :surprised im already picturing her :lightbulb and about space cadet 1#, yes he does need alot more work in the globes, boots and hellmet but i wont over working him :D

well, this is the female space cadet that will be sitting by the main character (sexy female cop), she still needs some work... :D
this is the first time i do cartoony characters so hopefully shes not too hideous.

Hey Sergio, love the last model, really cool with great appeal ! very nice design. The purple colour for the eyes is a very nice touch!! great :D My only comment is about hands again, needs a bit more volume on it, but is a minor detail :) Great work my friend! Cheers! :beer:

worked on the female cadet a bit more,shes UVmaped and ready to texture and bind, in my opinion i could do more but i think i need to move on to the main character

hi guys, i modified the space cadet a bit more, please tell me if you like it better than the first version, i gotta make the best of each character because i don't think im going to have time to model more than the three i've done so far because of time :( i blame my laziness and the intersecting dates between dominance war and this comp.. but anyways this character needs to be weight painted and textured and that'll be it

im doing paint overs on some renders right now to figure out the colors but i think its gonna be a very simple color pallete

Hello sergio! I hadn't seen your work till now. You've got some nice modeling happening in here. I would add more junk to the space girls trunk, just a little though...I think it looks too much like her front side atm so it needs to be defined as a bum :). Looks like an interesting scene that you've got planed aswell. I'll await your lighting and color passes!

hi again guys, time to update :P
heres just some testing of shaders and lighting for the environment, theres still a lot to add.
i changed the desing, now the diner will be called Slug's diner and the slug character will be a waiter, from the window you will see the thrusters that keep the diner in place and a oldtimee neon diner sing, i also modified the slug character, ill post tomorrow some shader and texture test for the female space cadet.

Love the characters. Everything looks very good - only you should work on the overall lighting. Maybe an interior radiosity setup or a simulated one. Keep up the great work! :thumbsup:

When I get home to my wife tonight, I'm going to ask her and my three kids, "Hey, yall wanna go to Slug's Diner tonight!?!" And the kids are going to go, "Yaaaay!" Haha, this is turning out really awesome. I love it very much; can't wait for the final. By the way, I'm going to take your advice and render out one image instead of compositing all of the seperate renders together. Thanks again.

Hey Sergio, really great updates my friend! Like a lot the space suit for the cadet girl, really cool, and nice pose. The lighthing test looks nice, I love the blue neon outdoor lights, hahahah great touch!! Maybe you need to "dirt and scratch" a bit the floor texture -again you can do that after your final render with photoshop to no take much time .... I hope :D - ahhh and about your renders, always is a good idea to make a overexposed and underexposed renders to control ligth, if be needed, on photoshop. Again, great work Sergio! thanks guys, its really more than i deserve :D

kerem: the lighting is composed of pont lights which are placed inside the lamp bulbs and a lot of directional lights for fill light, because its cheaper rendering than global illumination or other alternatives but still just a test, i might test some other lighting rigs but these one seems to be working, in this render the shadows look a little weird cause the shadows are to hard and my fill lights might be a little off, they are also not casting any shadows.
also i don't know what a interior radiosity setup is :D maybe i do but call it different, i use maya 8.5.

fernando: thanks a lot fernando for the tip about modifying the exposure of the renders, we'll see how it goes, about the dirts and scraches, i will try to do what i can with texturing but because time is shrinking i might just do a lot in photoshop after words as you suggested.

this is just a test with textures of base colors, i will work on the textures a bit more ones i further the other characters more, also as you can see theres hair involved

this shows the hair i made for her, its not really final, it needs a little more tweaking of shape and shading but its getting there, please tell me what you think, also testing shaders with base colored textures, you can see that i have sss shading in the face but again i have not tweaked it to much because this scene has different lighting rig and dimensions than my diner scene, it will have to be fine tuned with the final environment and lighting. any suggestions welcome :D

i worked a little bit on the slug :D its uvmaped, ready for texturing and rigging, the character actually has 4 infinite chain arms :D

This is another shading test, i feel this looks more like my original intent (red hair) the first one looked kind of blond.. also fixed the eyebrows a bit more, im not sure if the specular is too low but we'll see on the final light rig :D

thanks oz :D but animating isn't my thing, thats why a need a team ;)
this is just another closeup of the fase, now added the lower eyelashes, they are very faint but definitely there, i might enlarge them, and FINALLY! (she looks better with her mouth closed doesn't she? :D) shes completely body and facially rigged, not like the last time which was very raw compared to this one, now im going to import all the characters into the environment and start posing them, then i will work like hell on the textures and more detail for the scene T_T so much to do! :)

Hey Sergio, like a lot the change to a more redish hair, looks really cool! :D and makes a nice combination with the purple eyes :) Maybe the eyebrows a bit more darker than hair, only a comment :) The Chef Slugs looks awesome, great work! well, i thought to post this before i go to sleep :) this was my last test for the day and it went terribly wrong! the hair didn't show and some things didn't reflect.. but don't worry ill fix it :D
you can see i posed the body a bit and did some facial expression.

hey marco glad to see you here, it is becoming a real challenge to do a good soft lighting with out a radiosity (global illumination) as kerem suggested, hopefully my lighting pulls through.
becase i don't think i have any time left for test renders i just bring you a view port screenshot out of maya, in here you can see ive begun to pose the slug character, no texture in the scene is final as you might imagine but in case i dont finish the way i want those base color should be fine :D.
and theres another dead stroke for my image, i just notice that wen i render in mental ray a surface with an SSS shader and the scene has point lights i get en incredible amount of errors, the image takes for ever to render and my hair doesn't show up, its kind of hard to give up the sss but i can fake it in photoshop after words :)

hey guys, i just thought to post this lighting test because it took so damn long (two hours) im working on my celeron D so it was fast for what it is.. i will switch to my laptop for final rendering (centrino duo 2gb ram), still haven't posed the models well yet, ill do that next...

Sergio! The expression is looking wonderful! She looks very mischievous. I agree with an earlier comment about getting some GI or radiosity going on in this scene. Your characters would fit that type of render really well i think. Great job man, keep it up.

Hey Sergio, really looking great my friend. The chef looks awesome... really nice character :thumbsup: . The expression for the cadet girl, is totally cool! The props ( gun and space food ) are really nice, like a lot. About radiosity issue, for sure your scene can gain a great lighting, but in the other hand is the render time :( A tip, you can lower the values for radiosity, use only backdrop radiosity and a low value for calculation rays. Use a HDRI image for light probe, but first make a gaussian blur over the HDRI image ( very blur) Dont use a very large HDRI image, try about 800 to 1024 px. Or you can make a gradient image, with the color values of yor image and use it for a light probe ( over exposed a bit the gradient and blur it). Again, really cool work my friend! Cheers!! :beer:

Sorry to hear - of course GI is not only way to make a good lighting. Perhaps you already saw Jeremy Engleman's lighting walkthrough to explain very realistic lighting with only 13 lights and without using GI/FG. Check out here -

Sergio! It's looking great. I love the space pouch and I agree with everyone about the expression on her face. She is looking like she's really up to something that can't be good, haha. Characters are great, and the environment is well done too. I think this is going to be one of my favorites of the whole competition. I am hopefully going to finish up today and post my final image. I've got a new baby coming tomorrow, haha! Good luck with your project man.

fetus23: thx ryan, hehe because something i did in maya the facial expression got all screwed up, im glad you all liked, i think ill be making some other expression im not sure what it will be

ferx: gracias fernando, but im not using an hdri image :D maybe i could to get some kind of realistic light source for a sun of a space image full of stars but no time :hmm:

kerem: thats man! i have that tutorial but was buried under a pile of dvds, i saw it and freshened my memory and figured out why i wasn't getting soft shadows, the scene scale i was working on was humongous... thats way my final gather, global illumination or ray tracing became unstable when i bumped up the values to get the result needed, now ill have another look at final gather (radiosity):buttrock:

heres a test render i did after adjusting the scale of my scene and redoing the lighting to a faked GI setup, still need to adjust many things.. hopefully i finish by saturday

Hey Sergio, looking great! The outdoor background looks cool, like the galaxy on it and the frames for the space windows are awesome! :thumbsup:. Perhaps more bright on it, only a comment :) When you make your render, make on separate layers to work on light details on photoshop, you can adjust on it your global light for the scene :) Again, really awesome work my friend!! thanks alot fer! i am rendering the image in seperate pases, almost done! the last image is rendering now since 10 pm of yesterday (beauty pass) :D actually the only pass missing is the hair which i will set up for rendering now, but that one wont take very long.

Sergio, I love the final image! I submited my final just about an hour ago; I'm not really pleased with it; could have done better if I wasn't so busy this last week (my wife had another baby). Anyway, I love the colors and characters and the render is awesome! It's a great story that this image tells. Congrats on the final image and good luck in the competition. Well done; thanks for all your advice for me too.

Hey Sergio, great image my friend!!! Love that scene!! Like a lot the atmosphere of the diner place. The character designs are really great, like a lot the style. Congrats on finishing Sergio, you cut it close! You've put together a great image here with alot of nice details. Keep going with your work! I think you could push this image even further with some more specular variation and materials, but now its time to rest right?! :D. grats again mate.

ryan: thanks i did cut it close! i submited a horrible image resolution like 3 hours before the deadline but left a image rendering, i fell a sleep, woke up and my rendering was done but there was like 3 minutes till deadline so i just slaped the new image into my photoshop file and uploaded it :\ not to pleased with what i uploaded but thats how it goes :(.

ralph: yeah im glad a lot of people finished, even if you think they're not but under presure people tend to pull off crazy things :D (don't worry about your english man :) ) and yes, any time we all can go to a bar :D air fair is costly tho.

kory: they probably we're going to get the slug's house special licorice ice malt :D its renowned throughout the galaxy.

heres a higher resolution of my image but not as high as the judges will have to endure... this one its not exactly the one i submited, i worked on this one a little more but thats as final as i will leave it.
