Hey everyone.... This challenge is really interesting so i decided to participate.. Good luck to everyone participating...

My idea is to concentrate on alien relationships rather than the book since i want to have some specific pieces of live action integration for my demoreel (currently being created)...

Its gonna be about scenes from the everyday life of interspecies relations... The first part will be a human and a chimphead having a beer at a bar...

Two actors will be shot in front of a greenscreen and composited over a cg background... one of the actors head will be replaced with a cg monkey head...

Hope you like the initial idea...

Have fun,

Hey George, glad to see you in this challenge my friend ! :) LIked your initial concept, the bar scene sounds really interesting and cant wait to see your first updates !! Cheers my friend!!

First of all, thanks a lot for the for the welcome Fernando...

Here is the monkey head i have so far... I am only modeling the head for him... I like how its turning out... most of the head will be covered in hair so i wont add any more detail except from some displacement mapping on the front of the face...

Hope you like it,

no time to type lots of stuff... texture and initial hair test update...

have fun...

c&c welcome as always

Good textures. Need to work a little more on the hair effect... you could try making it a little more thinner. But nice anyway

This is the greenscreen setup i used for this shot... I want to thank nick (right) and drew (left) for staring in it... They were just great... There was too much noise in the footage so i decided to loose some of the hair detail but have more hair consistency...

Drew's head will be replaced with the monkeyhead...

Hope you like it,

What are you using to key them out? Look forward to seeing where this one goes.

04-18-2008, 11:01 PM (

changed the hair (i am really happy with the way it looks) and added lights for the scene... also made the blendshapes i need so far...

hope you like it too...

04-18-2008, 11:05 PM
liviuberechet: Thank you for your comment man... changed the hair... hope you like them now...

Remi: I am using fusion's ultrakeyer... It does a good job most of the time but the noise is too much right now to get a clear, consistent, matte of the hair... So i balanced it out with a matte control to keep some of the detail but loose the noise...

Once again, thanks for your comments guys..

Looks better!
About the keying... try using a "color spill". The table and the hair has some green color spilling on them.

Try using combustion just for the keying... it does a beautiful job!!! then export it to what you need.

Good luck!

Put some contrast points on a screen or somewhere else for easy motion capture.
Keep on, very interesting project !!!

04-21-2008, 06:09 PM (

Because i dont want to draw any attention way from the main characters i decided to go simple on the bg and kind of monochrome with very small hue shifts...

hope you like it... will post an update with the characters and the bg in place shortly...

Have fun,

Liviu: will do in the compositing stage... glad you like the new hair..

Dmitry: thanks for your comments and suggestion man...

04-21-2008, 10:01 PM
I like the green screen things... looks so cool!:scream:

04-27-2008, 03:23 AM (

This has been a week of hell... matchmoving and making sure the hair didn't go wacky through the sequence...

This is the finished version of my submission so far in lowres and compressed for now (for bandwidth reasons)...

BTW, how do i upload videos for this challenge?

Hope you like it. If i have time i will make more shots for it.

Comments and critique are always welcome

All the elements work really good. :)

04-27-2008, 02:54 PM
Looks great, did you plan on doing anything with the hands as well. I think that would help too. Good work, look forward to more.

04-27-2008, 05:11 PM
hahahaha icedeyes... you made it..
simply itīs one best work

04-27-2008, 11:02 PM
Great! Simple and effective... Reminds me of the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It could have some more live elements, though...

04-28-2008, 02:43 AM
Thank you all for your input... I am glad everyone liked it...

grzesiekj, infoarq: thank you for your kind words...

XminusOne: I was not planning on making monkey hands for him just because i found it funnier to have just a monkey head attached to a normal human body... Also, since i am working for my reel right now, i am trying to get as many good looking pieces on my reel without spending an insane amount of time matchmoving... Sorry but i will skip this step for now.. ;)

liveman: I didn't use any other live elements because i didn't want to draw the attention away from the two main characters... I tried it at one stage and the input i got was negative so i skipped that step in the submissions...

04-28-2008, 01:43 PM

04-30-2008, 02:16 PM
That's awesome! nice work!

04-30-2008, 10:00 PM
Thank you all for your kind words...

I am really glad you all liked it cause it took a lot of effort and time on my end to make it... Lots of late nights...

Thanks again,

Really nice work! It is quite simple but works well. I agree that maybe the hands could be monkeyfied but that would be a lot of extra work (I guess)

Hello everyone... I want to thank everybody who contributed to this thread... It was a learning process once again...

This is the final version i am submitting.. hope you like it...

05-12-2008, 12:31 AM
I think you did a great job! Although it would have been nice to see him with gorilla-like hands. Very funny "take" on the theme "A Night at the Roxbury" in space!

05-12-2008, 02:26 AM
Thanks for your comments Tyson... Glad you liked the result... There are two reasons why i didn't do the hands... first, this was my initial idea (everything human except from the monkey head) and second, i am working hard on wrapping up my demoreel so time is an issue...

On another issue that came up, if anyone is reading this thread, I am trying to upload my final video for the video challenge using the cguploader but it gives me an error message saying that "This feature is only available to CGS members"...I used my username and pass, selected video as a category, browsed to an image and flv video and then i clicked upload....

Am i doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Ok... I decided to add something else i have been working on in my submission...

Its a space scene i have been messing around with for a couple of weeks now on and off (mostly off), not sure if it would fit in there, but i think it will work really well to complete my submission...

Hope you like it...

05-21-2008, 11:40 PM (

I hope you like the design... I took some reference from old nasa spaceships as well as spacestations and added my touch on that...

This is the model that will go into the space scene...

C&C welcome as always...

Have fun,

Thats a pretty cool design there. I don't know about the proportions is Mr.Charles Dart inside this ship.

05-22-2008, 04:14 AM
Very very cool...good to see you're adding some expository elements to yours ;)

05-22-2008, 04:52 AM
Your entry is pretty solid.
adding stuff will only make it better .

good luck

First of all thank you for commenting on my entry. Sorry I haven't visited yours but i am still finishing stuff for my reel and its really time consuming as i am sure you know.

digikris: I was creating the ship for the stylistic purposes of the angles it will be viewed from, so proportions where not the most significant factor of consideration. If sizes still bother you in this video, i can change them (schedule permiting).

Tyson, Grzegorz: I am really glad you like it...

I really hope you like how the space scene turned out... I was thinking of putting it in front of the monkey scene in the edit. What do you think?

If you have the time, could you also check my new reel at and tell me what you think?

C&C welcome as always...

Great job! I didn't see any technical errors, and it looked great from an artistic of luck!

05-29-2008, 05:29 AM
Thank you for your input Tyson... I am really glad you liked it...

I love it. The tracking on the ape-dude is amazing. Esspecially when he is drinking the beer.

I also like the design of the ship. Very 'jules verne'. ;)

05-29-2008, 08:51 AM
Yassoo, George. Congratulations on completing your video entry, it is pretty awesome. It is somehow reminiscent of Harrison Ford and Chewbaka. I love it, although I do wish that you had put gloves on the uplifted chimp rather than leave him with human hands. Showing him with human hands makes it look a little like a man in a monkey mask. Anyway, this is very well done and I wish you the best of luck with the judging... and with finding that job. :applause:

05-30-2008, 04:49 AM
Thanks for your comments Christopher and Paul... I am really glad you liked how it turned out....

Paul: The hands were actually a choice to make it look funnier and it was the in the initial idea to have him just be a dude with a monkeyhead... I hope this doesn't ruin it for you...

06-21-2008, 04:50 AM
Hey George, simply amazing!! Like a lot the concept. Great animation for the ship and really great work with the ape. Congratulations for this superb video :D Cheers!!
