Latest Update: Work In Progress: diplomat's spaceship

Howdy do, ladies and gents! I wasn't sure if I was going to enter, but I have to face it, this is the kind of challenge I was made for. I'll make the time, I'll put in the work, and I'll cry myself to sleep on the nights I can afford to get any. As you can see, though, I'm prepared...
The overall idea:
I intend to create a trailer for either a film or a TV show, depending on how the script turns out. It won't be too long - I'm aiming for 2 minutes at the most, a bit longer if some of the live action can avoid effects work, a bit shorter if it is really effects-heavy.
It'll be a combination of live action and CG. The live action will mostly be shot against a greenscreen (which, incidentally, I still have to build) with my HV-20. This'll be my first time compositing... actually, my first time doing many things. Should be fun! I don't intend to work in HD, though, so that should make it all a bit easier as well as save a lot of rendering time. Well, I might work in 720p, if I can afford it. My computer is getting older every day, though, and those Commodores have started to belch black smoke whenever I fire them up.
The story deals roughly with an exiled Napoleon-esque figure who is recalled by Earth to defend it from alien invasion. A genetically modifed genius with ambiguous motives, his strategic brilliance and powerful, albeit untrustworthy allies may mean Earth's salvation... or its destruction.
Plan of action:
I intend to get things done roughly in this order:
Live action filming
3d shots & effects
Foley & music
Some of these will blur into others, some will probably be done out of order.
Script: the story outline is done, the script is about 1/4. This is what I'm most concerned with delivering right now. I should have a nearly-final draft done by tomorrow night.
Storyboards: I have a couple scenes done, but I'm holding off until the script is finished.
Concept art: I've done some rough preliminary work.

While working out the script, I've also been playing with some concepts. The top is a quick mood sketch with a rough 3d model and some photographs for the background. I don't think the cityscape is futuristic enough for my purposes, but I like the shape of the ship.
Middle are some ideas for a human pilot wearing an alien-looking helmet.
Bottom is an idea from the current script - meteors used to attack the Earth. I'm quite happy with how my planet turned out.
Just some really quick stuff, I've got other ideas on paper but most of it is way too rough to show. More tomorrow.

if you are on a budget, ikea has (or at least had a few months ago) green shower curtains for $5. I have used them to key with an hv20, worked pretty well.

John, good idea. Wouldn't a shower curtain be pretty reflective, though? I was thinking of either painting some canvas or buying some heavy green cotton.
There will be alot to work! Best to you in this challenge! Good luck!

I love the I'm "prepared" part :)
So man it's a hard job to make a good 3d with a live action, so i wish you luck !!!
As for composition part there is some artists here that will help if some questions appear :)

I was a bit surprised at how well they worked. the shower curtain is called "SAXAN", the surface is almost matte. we were working in a small room with the back wall covered in chromakey fabric. when we went to 3 cameras for a 2 person discussion we used the shower curtains on the side walls. we didnt even use a hairdryer to take out the wrinkles and it still worked as well as the fabric on the back wall. we were using primatte rt in motion 3 to key.

I'm not ready to put up my storyboards yet, but I've been working on this spaceship while I get the basis of this whole project hammered down. This particular ship figures heavily in a few sequences. It belongs to a diplomat and can handle everything from deep space to atmospheric flight - but doesn't have so much as a peashooter to defend itself with. Very much a work in progress.
