Latest Update: Work In Progress: Getting there.... (

Wow Just moved house, 3 weeks for internet connection hence the late entry.

I'm a TD and programmer by trade so i am quite excited to try out and improve my skills in other aspects of 3D. This should be fun.

This is just a blocking model of my alien to establish the proportions et al. No major details. I will see how i go with sculpting the extra detail after I rig and pose it.

different angle.
Still quite a lot to do. Head is still not to my liking.

04 April 2008, 08:35 AM
funny character.. could be a cousin of my hown character... keep going on...

VERY NICE GUY! funny and well designed.

04 April 2008, 05:56 PM (

Geo Test and composition test for the operating theatre.

Geo needs quite a lot of fixing and some parts a total re-do.

I'll do another render with a different shader tomorrow.

Hey Nathaniel, that models are looking really well, nice start on the alien design :) and a bit intrigued on your whole concept :) Good luck and looking forward for more updates!! Cheers mate!

Thanks for the comments guys.

The concept is basically going to depict a group of humans performing cruel surgery on a group of these little critters....

The story is going to be set sometime in the future and humans have found a planet with these little guys. A large corporation has also have found that these little animals have a particular gland that can be harvested and used in medicinal/drug manufacture. The main point I want to get across is that these animals have no real identifiable language that humans can understand and it has been assumed is that they are mindless animals waiting to be exploited for profit. I want to contrast this by representing a family of these creatures trapped in the operating room. I want to show that they are capable of understanding their surroundings and react emotionally about their personal relationships.

I was also going to try and layer it with more human elements, like humans trying to protect these animals, if time is permitting.

I think the focus on the cruelty is the most important part of what I want to represent and as i said i'll add "hope" if I can do it well within the time frame.

Started on the head of the main surgeon.
Basic blocking of head. Going to go for an old and sunken face. Most of his face will be covered with a surgical mask though so most of my attention will be around his eyes.

04 April 2008, 06:56 PM (

Mucking around with lighting the surgery.

04 April 2008, 09:13 AM (

This is a sculpt wip for my surgeon.
He will be wearing a hat and a surgeons mask hence the lack of detail on the top of his head and around his mouth.

I am also no sculptor. In fact this is the first time i've really done it. It is great fun and I really appreciate why people would spend hours/days/months/years/millenia doing it for kicks.

just a screen grab. Woman is just a placeholder but she will be a nurse pulling a syringe. The boxes are intended as cages some empty some with creatures inside.

05 May 2008, 05:08 PM (

Just filling in some details in the scene.
Have modeled some surgical tools which are not in this yet.

05 May 2008, 06:14 PM (

Spent the last few days doing a lot of uv layout and texture painting.

This wip has some of the textures/shaders in it. I've also started with the lighting. This is just background lighting for the room. I'll start on key/characters tomorrow.

Another Update.

worked mainly on the lighting and today.
I am actually feeling like I might finish this on's hoping :)

Creepy concept! I love the low camera angle for this peice - like you're one of those escaped aliens - and the palete is great too. Good luck with the rest of the colors and details. The aliens ARE going to be furry, aren't they? :)

05 May 2008, 05:10 AM
Hi Michael,

Thanks for the comments.
Fur is definitely planned but there is still a lot of work to do so it's all down to priority....Here's hoping.

Nice composition, excellent modeling.

Great mood and atmosphere, excellent colouring with the red light outside making your eye travel to the doctor in the back.

I hope you have the time to make the creatures furry, if not I'm sure it will end up looking just as good.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing the final image.:wip:

This is the colour map to the surgeon's face. Still a WIP but it's good enough to test the shader with.

05 May 2008, 03:07 AM (

Here is a map i'm using for my spec.
It kinda looks like camo face paint but it is actually storing 2 values. The level of spec in th red channel and the roughness in the green. I got the values from a paper by Weyrich et al. 2006.

05 May 2008, 03:13 AM (

This is a shader I wrote this morning.

Spec part is using the Kelemen/Szirmay-Kalos BRDF which is a nice quick approximation of the torrence/sparrow (which is why the data from Weyrich works.)

subsurface part, at the moment, is from Jensen et al 2001. I want to try and use his multipole method from his 2005 paper but perhaps too much to do to fiddle with it for too long so i might have to settle for Wax man.

also a note on the maps....i've only done one side as you can only see one side of the surgeons face (and he will be wearing a hat hence the jarring crapness on his point in wasting time :)

05 May 2008, 04:50 AM
Hi Nathaniel :)

Really great texturing on your main human characters head ( I am amazed with all the high quality z-brush work people are putting out these days.)

something is a little wrong with the slope of his forhead, If you have time you might push it out a bit. and make it a bit more planar to the front of his face.

The lighting is looking good as well.

all the best.

05 May 2008, 05:03 AM
just caught the part about the hat, ignore previous comment :)

You're right though...he does have a bit of a slope. I was watching the first three eps of star wars (ep 4->6) with my girlfriend the other week (she hadn't seen them) and I kinda based this guy from the old fleet admiral guy on the death star...I actually toned the slope of my guys forehead down quite a bit from his reference pics.

Another Wip.

All skin is simply placeholder. This is a straight from render render. Using a diff renderer for the skin.

Still a bit of set dressing i want to do.

Getting there.

So dissappointed I couldn't finish this. Power supply failure on my desktop machine that burnt out my motherboard and for some reason my tablet too. My poor little laptop was unable to render all the passes in time.
