Good luck!

04-14-2008, 02:15 PM
why thank u sir !

although i have left it a little late i hope i can get something ready in time..

04-15-2008, 08:07 AM (

Ok i know its only a very rough sketch
but the train was shaky and the scanner screwed up !

there is a 3d previz coming which explains the whole thing better.

basically the alien and the chimp and the men will be discussing something,
the alient landscape in the background will resemble mars. The alien i think will be holding out his hand demonstrating something. Maybe a map or something

04-15-2008, 08:26 AM (

ok here is the first 3d previz of the scene so you can see the direction i am going with the landscape..

the alien will be holding his hand out and a holo map or something wil be shining on the others

more updates that i did over the weekend

here is the first modeling of the Astronaut. It wanted it to be kind based on the space suit of dave in 2001 space odessy..

04-17-2008, 10:41 AM (

Hey everyone

here is the final modeling of the astronaut, i wanted to be slightly male slightly female so you couldnt really tell.. but basically Human by definition..

thanks for any crits

04-17-2008, 10:43 AM (

An also here is the modelin for the monkeynaut..

i know the deformations are off but thats because of my dodgy rigging but in the final image i dont think you will be able to tell

04-18-2008, 08:52 AM (

here is the final monkeynaut model. Have redone the deformations in Zbrush
and am happy with this now.. texturing for this will be simple so no UV needed.

04-18-2008, 01:24 PM (

jut playing around with some landscape ideas .. am really liking the mood and atmos of this one

04-19-2008, 10:43 PM
I agree, you have a very nice atmosphere going in the latest one. Also I like where you are going with the models syle-wise. Feels like 'retro meets comics' to me  Cool detailing too, especially with the human.

Maybe try squeeze more story in there, probably you have something in mind. If the human and monkey are traveling, then would the alien be a local - not needing a suit? Are they lost and asking for directions? If they meet the alien in the middle of nowhere, what is he doing there? Some backpacks or other relevant items might add to this. Is there a transport of such?

I'll follow this. Rock on!

Nice evocation of distopian moodyness there! Almost doesn't need any figures in it.

One little tip with the gorilla: I believe they use thier second from last knuckle to walk on rather than their first. Other than that though, the space suit is very "Gorilla".

04-20-2008, 02:48 AM
nice atmosphere you have in that background and character models are looking great too..
really looking forward for the final image.:)

04-20-2008, 04:19 AM
i'm so in love with this scene! feels very 'there' i even like the little details on the astronaut :p awesome dude! good luck to you!

04-21-2008, 02:01 PM (

modeling the alien now, almost finished.,,

should be fun to UV map !!!

04-22-2008, 08:22 AM (

hey everyone
here is the landscape that i will be working with.. i made it more industrial and gritty.

thanks for crits.

04-22-2008, 08:50 AM
Very nice image. Are you maybe going to add some heavier weather in the background? Lightning etc?

04-22-2008, 09:31 AM
yes lightning.. great idea.. i thought it was missing something..

will report back :-)

cheers for the feedback

04-22-2008, 12:06 PM
I really like the concept of alien human and chimp in discussion. Besides your landscape and character modeling looks pretty good.keep up the great work!

04-24-2008, 01:14 PM (

here is some basic texturing and final modeling of the alien, quick render test and shaders also..

04-24-2008, 02:39 PM
Nice work Neil. I like the background. I look forward to seeing the characters integrated.

04-24-2008, 03:33 PM
hey neil your alien looks really amazing! are those speakers in his chest? beatbox alien! :scream:

04-25-2008, 08:32 AM (

here is the final landscape lightning and everything !!

04-26-2008, 11:37 AM
Nice work. The lightning helped a lot  The environment looks very dangerous to travel in.

04-28-2008, 09:02 AM (

hey everyone

here is a character integration test..
i did a little colour correction also and have left out the alien for now as i need to rework him and his pose..
hope i can get it done on time

04-28-2008, 01:35 PM
This is looking really neat, Neil: The palette, the composition, the dynamically charges atmosphere, it's all really exciting. The character's poses feel a but passive, it might be nice to see the chimp gesturing or pointing off somewhere... but I know I'm also not seeing it with one more character - the alien - in the scene, so it's not really fair to comment 'til that's all in place. Good luck!

04-30-2008, 07:14 AM
Looking really good. Very sinister lightning! Don't know if this was intended but that v of cloud coming down on the left almost loos like a twister forming.......................

04-30-2008, 07:24 AM
Well this is looking great. Keep up the awsome work. Just be careful that the lightnig doesn't steal the attention away from your subjects infront. :)

04-30-2008, 10:33 AM (

here is my remodelled alienn, i am liking this version a lot better than the other version i did, and i made a quick comp into the updated enviro.

working on the shading now but i dont want to over do it

04-30-2008, 01:58 PM
nice remodelled alien, really make it more interesting to look at than the previous poses.

05-01-2008, 02:12 PM (

so here are the final 3 characters in the shot together..

not sure if the alien should have a shadow underneath him or not really..
and feedback on that would cool.

just the volumetric lighting to do

05-01-2008, 02:34 PM
nice modeling i like the space monkey alien with the wire things the best, keep up the good work.

Impressive work! There is a good sense of drama but at the same time it looks like a real situation. The only thing really bothering me about it (which I am sure you know about) is that the poses of the characters are a bit symmetrical.

Good stuff though. I have been watching this one.

05-02-2008, 08:50 AM (

here is another composition idea and more dramatic lighting which i think works a lot better

05-02-2008, 12:15 PM
Great thread and impressive work. I can't help but feel distracted and sort of de-focused with this image. I'm wondering what would happen if your characters were all oriented up - as if standing on flattened ground - a road, a hollow, etc. I think it might let the eye rest a lot more.

05-02-2008, 03:03 PM
Holy crap dude, this is freakin awesome! So dynamic. Just picking my mouth up off the keyboard...

05-02-2008, 09:00 PM
Cool stuff, I love the monkey space suit. The alien landscape is very interesting as well.

05-04-2008, 06:57 AM (

hey everyone

still pushing this image further . added the glowing globe and some more lighting and colour changes.
almost done

05-05-2008, 12:51 PM (

i think maybe this is my final image
have done some painting and added the glows etcetc

thanks for crits..

05-05-2008, 03:12 PM
Just discover your work wonderful with a nice atmoshere

05-05-2008, 03:21 PM
Really enchanting 'post-apocalyptic'-like scene. The red energy orb that the alien is forming with his hands looks like part of the background, like a red sun. How about making it glow brighter, casting a strong light reflection on all characters? It will become a nice focus point of the whole composition. May I suggest having some ancient alien relics lying on the ground somewhere. Or maybe some signs of road or path. The human in the yellow suit (which I assume must be the human), looks like it could be another alien. Perhaps, you can try making their helmet interior light up, revealing their faces, but that's just a minor suggestion. It is already a wonderful and dynamic piece, Neil! All the best!

05-06-2008, 09:14 AM (

hi everyone

here is my final image.
I tweaked again the landscape which if i had a hundred years i wouldnt be happy with . thanks for everyones crits and feedback. Good luck everyone

05-06-2008, 09:54 AM
congratulations on your final entry neil! love your work!
wishing you all the luck!

05-06-2008, 11:00 AM
cool of my favs...
tho i think a little glow under the floaty thing might do it sorta set it off from the background a little...

05-07-2008, 07:43 AM (

here is the final final final now

added a small glow on the ground as suggested

05-15-2008, 07:14 AM
Very nice work .Every element is harmonious which has to be visually before you dig into details .Good work

I'm liking it a lot and am happy to see you finished well. Very atmoshperic and stylish. I really enjoy the strong colour. Scene is fantastic and perhaps the still character poses work better here when there is already so much riot in the background. The final additions you did helped the image.

Too late now of course but I think different colour for the orb, and then the highlight on the characters, would be even better - especially a colour contrasting to all the dominating red and orange. Just my 2 cents. Btw looks like your backstory isn't there with the final image but, instead, at the beginning with concept. I hope the judges pick it up from there.

05-15-2008, 04:30 PM
the end result is very cool...
that ground set the shapes alot more for

great detail and a really cool concept
