View Full Version : Spiderman\Venom Short

04-09-2008, 07:25 PM
I've been working a Spiderman animation and finally have something to show. Not a whole lot of animation yet, but the Venom model is rigged and I just finished up a test animation for him. I'm going for a more Illustrative look, more in line with the comic style so a lot of my time has been in post work trying to get that to look right.

The model for Venom was made by Joel Byington (co-worker and friend at Big Huge Games). There are a few more renders of him on my website www.louisferina.com (http://www.louisferina.com/) but I wanted to keep this thread mainly to animation. Joel may put up a modeling thread to show off his stuff.

Test Animations:

Hopefully more to show soon.

Hi Lou, I'm not sure if it's just me, but I can't seem to get that animation working at all.. Would you be able to provide another link to it?

Hmm...I can view it. I'll try and get an mov or another filetype but here is a Youtube link in the meantime. Sorry about that.

Yeah, that works... thanks..

I like the look of that Lou! The movement is very good. I would be interested to see where this project goes now..

Finally got to some actual animation for the short. Here is a playblast of the scene so far, it's still a work in progress and the spiderman model is temporary. Appreciate any comments.

WOW! This is gonna be awesome! You have talent, good angles, great poses, incredible.

Yeah, excellent work! This is definitely shaping up to be a nice project.

Great work so far!

it's kind of confusing though, needs to be replayed a couple times before I can really get what is going on. I would recomend adding a little anticipation or something at the beginning, it just starts off too fast before I can really get what is going on in the scene to begin with. So maybe just have a beat or two before venom swings at him, so instead of starting venom at the peak of his jump, have him jump into it.
Also Venom's arm just seems to stay up there for too long after he swings, kind of weird looking that his hand doesn't move at all for like the 2nd half of the animation. If you had that hand/arm come into that pose after spiderman lands or something I think it would be much more dramatic.

great work so far though, keep at it!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Phredrek: The jump is a little out of context, since it happens in the previous scene. Hopefully it'll make more sense when it's cut together. I agree about the arm too, it does look a little stiff up there. I'm going to try a little more follow through after the swing, then move the arm into position like you suggested. I was definitely trying to force the pose too much.

Nice work! The test render is amazing.. very visually appealing.. but it's animation in this thread right? I shall keep on track.. Haha
The animation is going well, keep it up! :D
Maybe there can be just a slightly longer hold after venom's first strike for the audience to register the action..

wow this is looking incredible! The motion on Venom is exactly as you'd want him to look - lots of weight behind his attacks. Spidey is great too - that first motion of "phew narrowly escaped that attack ..uh oh I better shift here" is ace! I would consider adding a bit more hand motion on him as he lands - maybe a hand could 'touch down' to cushion his landing more.

this is truly superb work - cant wait to see more of it and if it comes out looking as good as the render of venom it'll be a stunning piece :D

wow this is pretty good, thanks for the bump minifong...

Hey thanks for the comments again. I actually just got married and returned a few days ago from my honeymoon, so I need to get back into the swing of things. The animation had to be put on hold for a short time but I'm really dying to get working again so I hope to have an update fairly soon.

It's been almost a year, but I'm getting back into this project. Here is a new animation test I did with Venom to get myself familiar with the rig again.

Youtube link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05M5Bd7woh0&feature=channel_page)

Joel finished up the Spiderman model so I'm working on that rig now.

wow finally lol! Great little test anim - I think the skid on the ground is a bit much but as you said your still picking it up and its been a year :)

one thing I will say - dont look at the spidey3 film for anim reference - theres far too much camera spinny trickery that prevents you seeing whats actually happening between the 2 characters. Keeping the cam on the ground gives us a more bystander viewpoint - as if we're caught in the crossfire between these two and it makes their acrobatics look more impressive.
other than that awesome update mate - cant wait to see more :bounce:
