Ummm, am I reading this correctly? By entering your competition, an artist is giving you ALL rights to their work. Below is an excerpt from the entry form terms and conditions.

In consideration of your participation in the CG Overdrive Comgraph Competition, you shall assign to Visual Communication Order Pte Ltd
(“VCO”), its staff and/or agents the following rights:

1.1 the copyright and all other rights in the nature of copyright in the Works or materials used in the creation of the Works;

1.2 all similar protection conferred by the laws of the Republic of Singapore [and all other countries of the world] in the Works or any part
of the Works and all preliminary workings of the same [in all parts of the World] absolutely and in each case for the remainder of the
term or, as applicable, for the full term of the same including any renewals, extensions or revivals,

If the above is correct, then artists beware. If I am misunderstanding this somehow, please correct me. I don't recall ever hearing of a competition that required the artist to give up all ownership of their work.

Maybe I am wrong but I understood the same there......:hmm:

Hi guys,

It seems there is a slight misunderstanding with the T&C listed in this competition.

You, as the artist, will not be surrendering all the rights to the artwork. All submitted artworks will be used ONLY for the CG Excellence Award 2008 Competition and for display at the CG Overdrive. We and Visual Communication will like to gain the rights of your work because we might be using your work for publicity purposes. If your entry gets shortlisted, we will be printing your entry and displaying it at the CG Overdrive exhibition. During this printing process, we may need to change the framing of the image to fit the prints and for us to do that, we will need these rights from you.

Please rest assured that your works will not be sold or used for profits. It is only for use within the competition and not for anything else.

I apologize once again for this misunderstanding.

p.s. The images have to be at least 1188x1685. That is not the maximum image size.

Thanks ever so for the heads up Danny.
I'll see if I can sort out a couple of entries to pop over. I'll also make sure that the other forums I dabble in are aware of it (Imaginefx, Pixelbrush, It'sArt, Ambient, Painterfactory), although I doubt they live in as dark and ill informed cave as I do.

All the very best for a huge entry, and many thanks again,

Hi All!

is there any chance to submit art with lower resolution than the minimum mentioned above?
It would be sad if not

04 April 2008, 01:26 AM
Fortunately 1188x1685 is the minimum image size recommendation as we will be printing shortlisted entries to be displayed at CG Overdrive's Digital Art Gallery. A smaller image size may cause the artwork to not be enjoyed in all it's glory.

We will still accept entries that are smaller but it is optimum that artworks are bigger. In this case, bigger is better.

So, can we switch the height and width from 1188x1685 to 1685x1188? Because I orginally created my piece to be a horizontal composition.

04 April 2008, 01:15 AM
Yes. Landscapes and Portraits are totally fine. 1188x1685 and 1685x1188 are acceptable sizes.

Even with your explanation I am not comfortable with the wording on the terms agreement. It is worded such as giving up all rights to the work , even if that is not the intention. The wording needs to be changed so it applies specifically to use of work in the contest. Like a one time use agreement.
