View Full Version : Rinoa Final Fantasy 8 Sexy!, Munch (3D)

05-08-2003, 05:20 PM (

This is a Character I made for a contest. Where you had to model a character from Final Fantasy games before FFX. As if they were apart of Final Fantasy X-2 (recently released in Japan) Less than 3500 faces. I choose the Character named Rinoa from FF8. She is:

3470 faces

uses two 512*512 texture maps

3 omni lights (1 raytraced) 40% ambient light.

I found and modified images of lace, belts and old guns to create some of the maps with alpha channels.

05-08-2003, 05:22 PM
Great job! I love it!!!

05-08-2003, 05:23 PM
another image

05-08-2003, 06:14 PM

wire/textures? plz!

05-08-2003, 06:16 PM
The cloth design is too FFX2-Yuna-ish for me, I would have liked more originality, but maybe that's just me and it's definitely not breaking the character.

Albeit minor problems exist -- the inner side of the right elbow bends ugly, the vulva "stops" too high (especially apparent on the first image) and the thighs are too long -- it's a nice model though.

The texture sheet would be nice to see, too :)

Can you tell us where that contest is? I'm curious to see other entries. And did you win? :D

05-08-2003, 06:17 PM
Could you post the maps also, and a wireframe of the uv?

05-08-2003, 06:22 PM
you know i have to say,
when i saw the topic of the thread, i was like, 'no goddammit! leave rinoa alone!' but when i saw your model, i have to say, i was very impressed! right on! yes, the costume does borrow a bit too much from yuna's, but i like it! very nice
and i second the notion for frames & maps lol

:surprised -ill

05-08-2003, 06:26 PM
  sweet baby

05-08-2003, 07:07 PM
shes really nice, but rinoa doesnt have a gunblade :shame:

05-08-2003, 07:20 PM
cool :D.. so you finally posted here too :D..
great job man :applause:

05-08-2003, 07:33 PM
as wanzai pointed out, there are some design and model problems, but they are small. This is definitely a great work of poly art... We'd all love to see the wires and textures.

Fan - Tastic!

Love the gunblade also ;)

05-08-2003, 08:47 PM
WOW! Impressive

05-08-2003, 09:04 PM
The hair is great, so is the rest of the model but i love the hair. Post a wireframe please. texture sheets wouldn't be to bad either :)

05-08-2003, 09:23 PM
Sorry for late reply. thank you everyone for the comments, Rinoa was made for (sorry not sure if I should plug another websites contest. :hmm: ) I found the contest a little late so the model was made fairly quickly in my spare time. I tried for a little anime look.. reason why her legs length might weird (I'll try to get it better next time).

BlackZ: Why she has a gunblade..Yuna has Tidus's Waterblade in FFX-2, so I thought I could give Yuna a Weapon very similar too Squalls Gunblade (Rinoa's weapon is a Shotgunblade!:) ).

here is a wireframe. Sorry for the quality, I seem to be having trouble posting clearer images, it says the file is too big???

05-08-2003, 09:25 PM
just wire

05-08-2003, 09:28 PM
Close up wireframe

05-08-2003, 09:36 PM
Nice job man, definetly a work of 3D art. Looks like I better claim an FF model before someone else does it :D but Im probably too late for that!

05-08-2003, 09:37 PM

What blueprints did you use?

Have you triangulated the mesh, before counting the polygons?
Nice looking one tough!

05-09-2003, 02:09 AM
A-MA-Zing !
Already wanted to post at cgchat: she is fantastic! You really managed to capture the essence of FF characters ..mesh and textures are great ..really nothing else to say just
THe only tiny thing perhaps :the color sheme is just a wee bit too blueish .. still amazing !

05-09-2003, 02:29 AM
Pretty sweet.

great work!

05-09-2003, 06:58 AM
as i told ya... i still love her!!

05-09-2003, 07:23 AM
Very nice, it looks absolutly fantastic.

05-09-2003, 11:46 AM

Thank you very much for the compliments, I'm trying to get some webspace set-up, so I can share some high-resolution Images. Should be later today, I will share the Texture maps too.

05-09-2003, 03:51 PM
*bump! this deserves front page recognition

could we please see how you laid out your textures as well?

05-09-2003, 03:59 PM
Man o man o man... simply amazing.....

Yeah, this probably isn't on the front page yet b/c the "wip/gallery" fiends get the viewing first. :) I really like it a lot. So it looks like you used alphas on the hair too? When you said you used 2 512's was that 1 for the head, 1 for the body, or are you counting your alpha as a map? (or did you use alphas and put the alphas in the map?)

Can we get a closeup of the face, i wanna see how you did the eyes and nose.

Ok, that was enough demands, but you got me really intrigued!

05-09-2003, 04:15 PM
Munch if you need some space to put your stuff to preview here, hit me up by email or ICQ, and i can help you out with that.

05-09-2003, 05:27 PM
thanks for the comments, also illOgic thank for the webspace offer, I think I got it together now.

Texture maps, she is not unwrapped correctly, I had a short amount of time to complete the model, so the texture is kinda of a hack.

hmmm, I not sure if the image is appearing inside the post....

05-09-2003, 05:28 PM
This should be on the main page preview... Lovely model, man!!!

05-09-2003, 05:48 PM
very very well done. the maps do not look as clean as most, but they turned out on the model exceptionally well. indeed a canidiate for a front page mention. the work is great.

05-09-2003, 06:42 PM
Hello Munch!

I always wanted to know, how people make prfectly rectangle uwraps of body parts. This way the pixels will be too distorted, no?

And even if I do a spherical mapping the seams won't be straight, thus not making a rectangle.

Can you post the wire of the unwrapped mesh?

05-09-2003, 06:56 PM
Munch - thanks a ton! for posting the texture maps. I know i sound like one of those n00bs that just keeps asking for more, but if you could maybe explain your unwrapping process in a little more detail since you are a max user, i know a lot of people would benefit from it :D thanks again, and keep up the kicka$$ work

05-09-2003, 07:56 PM
Man, here the guys joins the forum and posts some great work and now you guys won't leave him alone!!! :)

.....So how about the close up of that face?

05-09-2003, 08:19 PM
Here is an example on how some of the mapping was done, also a closeup...(this was a rush job, not user friendly if you had to pass the model to someone esle :) I sure theres probably an easier way, this technique is only a fast texture fit.

Eyes, a mouth have openings, hair, lace and Belt uses an alpha channel (included in the two 512*512 targas).

most of the mapping was done like this, I started by selecting polyons around the head and neck.

next I placed a UVW Map modifier Cylindrical and Fit it.

finally I use a free plugin called TEXPORTER to unwrap the selected faces into a flat image. Save it and paint on it in Photoshop.

Sometimes I just take a render from the front view for some parts, Arms, Legs, Boot etc. You could unwrap these too. Last after I'm done with all the unwrappping, I use an Unwrap UVW modifier on the entire model and arrange the images so that they fit on two 512's. Let me know if there is anymore questions about my strange mapping methods:D

05-09-2003, 08:40 PM
some stars for you.

05-09-2003, 09:00 PM
If only they would come to life.

05-09-2003, 10:46 PM
I posted a similar one on cgchat.

05-10-2003, 12:39 AM
Now that i see the face up close, it looks a bit wide. Not good wide though... more like fat wide. It looks like her cheecks are sagging. Try upping the cheek bones a bit.

It's not a big deal, just a suggestion

05-10-2003, 03:48 AM
Extremely high quality work here. And for a "hack" texture job, as you put it, you did quite well. Good job.

05-10-2003, 05:32 AM
Can you make some larger renders. The work is really great and I would love to have a collage at 1600x1200 res. This is good Background material.

05-10-2003, 07:14 AM
/seconds the request for a large wallpaper sized render.

Rinoa is one of my favorite characters from the FF series and this design really compliments Squall, although now that I think about it, maybe her and Irvine are gonna hook up ;)

05-10-2003, 10:21 PM

Neil: one of the shots I showed is the 'user view' in max, which makes things a little wider, the original Rinoa has a wide round face,... her cheeks are a little saggy though... I can adjust this next time.
I will not be able to post a larger render until Monday. thank u for the request. Here is a image of the original Rinoa.

05-10-2003, 10:59 PM
this is absolutely terrific!!! no crits here

05-10-2003, 11:57 PM
don't change the models face, she is perfect right now. She's a little older? Time changes people. :)

05-11-2003, 03:09 AM
amazing work!

I wanted to ask you if you have any tips for creating the anime style look in your modeling?
I am currently trying to make a 3D anime style character (in maya), and having trouble get that stylized angular look in the eyes, nose, mouth etc...
also not sure how to go about hair and so forth. If you have any advice, i'd love to hear it :)

anyway, your work is great! have you done any other works like this for us to see?? ;)

05-11-2003, 09:05 AM
wow, I am impressed. There's a lot to learn from this model =)

05-12-2003, 06:47 AM

nice. i noticed that it was a final fantasy char. just from looking at the little thumb on the front page and ive never played the game or anything so that means its must be awsome.

I think this might deserve a cgtalk award or something

05-13-2003, 04:43 AM

Sorry for the late reply, I'm about halfway to E3 convention right now, reason why I didn't have a chance to post a larger pic. I will have a chance soon (sometime this week). Thank you so much for the wonderful comments!!! I really really appreciate it, thank you all :) . I look forward to spending more time with everyone on this forum. Thanks to everyone who requested the image to be placed on the frontpage. Alright, I'll be back with a update soon, from E3:wavey:

05-13-2003, 07:04 AM
Very nice. Good job, man.

05-13-2003, 07:18 AM
How about a 3d version?

If you get the demo of MS3D you can use both to import your model for show on the web.

05-13-2003, 08:15 AM
Rinoa and her makeover looks great and the low poly texturing is great. From a FF point of view her clothing style sort of loses her character...(Rinoa isnt so in your face stylewise) but still cool man

05-13-2003, 08:18 AM
Excellent work, love it:drool:

05-13-2003, 08:45 AM
Munch, amazing stuff, simply beautiful work:applause:

05-13-2003, 08:54 AM
Really nice job, I have only recently gotten into the final fantasy world and am just finishing ff10. It is an amazing game!

05-13-2003, 08:55 AM
When i saw this in the first page, i was like "who modeled Rinoa?"... So, first of all, it looks like her and second, she is really beautiful... Great work... By the way ff7 was the best so far in my opinion...

05-13-2003, 09:05 AM
I like her:drool:

many learn experience from you man

no crits form me
the texture is really rocks:thumbsup:

05-13-2003, 09:17 AM
Just a question, if she is theoretically wearing a tanga/thong (thats what the white bands belong to, right?) how come she has a VPL? Or is that just how those shorts are made?

Carl

05-13-2003, 09:18 AM
That the most beautiful 3470 faces that I've seen.

05-13-2003, 09:41 AM
could you show hair's map (diffuse and opac) and the setup

great, i have done her two year later, how nostalgic !!

05-13-2003, 09:42 AM
Exceptional low poly work. I am amazed at the detail you got into it.

This is me amazed -->:eek:

05-13-2003, 10:00 AM
Great Job!

It's extra nice seeing a rigged model on CGTalk for a change!

05-13-2003, 10:26 AM
I like, I want that game
plas, plas, plas:applause: :applause:

05-13-2003, 11:48 AM
Very good character...I really like it...the model, textures....:applause: :applause: :applause:

05-13-2003, 12:24 PM
That thing rocks..
I am making a game model myself...but that is quite an inspiration...
She's amazing...
BTW....Is it necessary to have all the textures for the body in just 2 maps....i.e. the face and the body..
or can you have different maps/for different parts of the body...

Keep it up...
Take care,

05-13-2003, 12:43 PM
the only thing i can say is:

WOW

05-13-2003, 12:58 PM
Gorgeous model -- the face looks a little squashed for her (isn't her face just a tad bit longer?) but really, the model and texture itself is gorgeous. This one is going into my "general inspiration" folder =)

05-13-2003, 01:39 PM
geez, finally plugged and finally gettiong the recognition it deserves...again, awesome model!

05-13-2003, 01:52 PM
Wow.. really great work!! I dont know how you managed to create so cute character with so few polys... just love the outfit and poses, bravo!

05-13-2003, 02:07 PM
congrats. for you great work, not only can appreciate your work, but also i can lern a lot about modelling and unwarp. great and the best part it's made in 3DMax.

05-13-2003, 02:38 PM
wow~ great character overall. I am building one character in FF style myself as well. this is such a great reference. I really like the overall feel of the character... very soft and clean!
and since I am doing a realtime character for the first time. is there something i should watch out for in terms of modeling? Thanks! :)

05-13-2003, 02:39 PM
Excellent! Simply put. And guys if you see something from Game Design that deserves mention you can always pm. Most stuff here is either WIP or asking for help, that's why it's slim pickings.

FF style-I love it!

05-13-2003, 05:47 PM
i cant believe this is low poly...... excellent work

05-13-2003, 05:55 PM
Hey munch, take this as your avatar so that we can see it everytime you post here ;)
What wonders me is that the texture is quite simple, according to the model, but both together just looks awesome. Really great work

05-13-2003, 11:17 PM
i love her it's great job, i like the face even if she has a "massive" jaw, that makes her unique, different from round faced anime girls and, year the breasts are a bit strange, they look a little bit like missiles :) but i love your work!

05-14-2003, 09:00 PM
Wow! Love this one.=) Great job.

05-14-2003, 09:43 PM
very nice chracter modeling.:bounce: :applause:

05-15-2003, 06:07 PM
ITS AWESOME!!:buttrock:

just one critic, i know i only have 2 posts, but when i first saw the second image i saw it in another monitor that is darker and it really looked like she had cellulitis :D (inner thigh) and now that im in another monitor, although this one has correct brightness, i can still see it. Dont know if its just me, just wanted to help a little with my point of view.

05-16-2003, 10:12 PM
Hey, I want to thank everyone for their recent comments, sorry for the late reply. I couldn't get on the internet while I'm at E3. Well thanks, I will do a better post when I get back.

05-17-2003, 06:02 PM
Cool model man, clean geometry. It seems very polished and complete for a rushed job. The only problems I see are that It doesn't seem like something rinoa would wear and there are some unnecessary polys in the hair and under the hair(polys that are never going to be seen).

About how long did u take to model and texture her.

05-17-2003, 06:51 PM
Rinoa! Baby! I take it all back! You really are fit!

05-18-2003, 08:18 AM
*crawls on floor rolling up jaw* when i first saw it i went, "Holy.." and that was it... i tried to say more.. i wanted to say more.. but i was too speechless.. that is a great model... makes me wish i had time and such to do up versions of my favorite FF character... lord knows how much fun I'd have with that...

truly great work... too great for words... and a funny coincidence as well.. I've been playing that game at the moment..

05-18-2003, 05:03 PM
Hello again, Thank you I really appreciate the comments. Looks like i could improve the modeling on her face and skin texture, but I must move on now. By the way I did win the contest which you can see the results at:

Thank you for the comment Lil Dragon and for the CGtalk choice award! I will try to enter a image for EXPOSE. Still haven't had a chance to do a larger Render cause I am not back to my PC yet. Well thank you everyone for so many replies and comments, also I hope to have a personal website soon.

05-19-2003, 11:45 AM
wow!! Shes cute, i really like your own version of her. Really nice.

05-19-2003, 12:45 PM
looks great!

05-20-2003, 03:04 AM
great job, I envy the was she looks on so little polys..

05-21-2003, 03:49 PM

05-24-2003, 10:12 PM
Woowowowowoowowwwwwww awesome!!!! but... original Rinoa is prettier :p ( yeah i love her :p )

11-19-2003, 07:06 PM
Hello everyone.
Fist time: sorry for my english; i'm french (please don't hate me :) ).
Well you work is really impressive as i can see. I think it's a very nice work the body is perfect or something equal. Just the face is nice but does not seem exactly the Rinoa of FF8.
I have try to see your website but i'm redirect on a site where there is nothing to do with that ? If anybody have the good please call me what is it.

Really nice, i hope you have or you will have a good place in a big society of 3D (if this is what you want).
Thanks very much for the nice picture :).
Good bye.

11-20-2003, 06:40 PM
I always thought this was a great peice of work, the texturing especially... When I saw it on cgchat, I had to smile...
My only gripe is not with the model itself, but with your face count....
to really be accurate you would need to convert the mesh to an editable mesh, and then sellect all the edges and make them visible.... this will give you a true vertex and triangle count...
None the less, this is amazing work, and I think you should animate it...

11-21-2003, 05:03 AM

07-14-2004, 10:21 PM
wow this is old, but luvly

rinoa fused with yuna ^^

It is an intresting point and I agree with it. The model is amazing, I love it, but if it would actually be rhinoa, no way she'd dress like that, riku ok, but rhinoa, no way. Great model, but not really rhinoaish. :)

Hello Munch,

I just wanted to say that I am incredibly impressed with your Rinoa Model (which I'm sure you've already read several times from people over the past 10 or so pages of comments ^_^) But I just love the look you came up with for her! It's absolutely perfect and so Square Enix! I just <3 it! I do have a rather odd question...see, one of my hobbies, aside from playing video games, is making costumes, and well....I just love the design you came up with so much, that I would love to make a costume based off your Rinoa Design....would that be alright? I'll give you credit and link to your page and whatever. Anwyay....Great work! Have an awesome day!

She's my favourite game character. The model resemblance closely to her but not her. If its not model to be Rinoa, I would love the model. To me, the model is herself. She have her own look and probably her own character. If its a new character she would be dead cool.

Anyway, what I'm surprise to see is her clothes. The design is original, unique and very good but still able to give people the "its what Rinoa would wear" thought. I really like the clothes alot.

GJ. Anyway, if you say she's Rinoa sister. I would give u full marks.

OK, so I know I'm responding to an ancient ancient thread, but yer Rinoa, I love. I was Googling around for low-poly characters to use as examples, and I found this thread. She's so cute, and I really like her costume!

Its amazing! First I saw she in googles gallery and i think I miss some part of FF8 XP
I searh all internet and i saw many forums with subiects that it will be FF8-2. All they have seen that Rinoa! They think that it will be sequel of ff8.
Ha! I was startled when I saw That Rinoa on this page.
Still I must say that its fantastic! Great job!
