Ok, here's my first sketch, late enough, only a doodle for the moment, not much to see at this stage. There are two characters struggling, a human soldier and an alien one. In fact I think one of the main ways of communication for human beings is war. Nobody said the relation between humans and aliens should be a peaceful one.

I suppose I'll have to hurry, I'n having too much work these days, but I'm finally in. I see fantastic work around by the way.

Here's another sketch of the two strugglers, Still have to decide the background.

I'm refining the concept. Instead of war between humans and aliens, let's take it to simple competition. Still have to define the costumes and background. The alien is too simple still. Once I begin to add colour things will change.

04-14-2008, 07:56 PM
cool staff. this alien reminds me of a character of the Estela Comic book series. nice expressions on the faces.

04-14-2008, 08:51 PM
I like your concept-sketch really much. You focus the attention in a cool confrontation between humans and aliens and you have a lot of space for placing lots of details. I feel like you are giving a lot of importance to the concept which is what I think as the most important one in the image.

Good luck I’ll keep an eye on this thread.

04-15-2008, 08:52 PM
great idea! you can play a lot with emotions on their faces, especially with alien. this is unusual, alien face with emotions...?:)

good luck man!

Thanks for your feedback guys. Here is a more refined pencil version of the sketch. I want the human wear a spacesuit and the alien some kind of primitive costume, dont know yet. I have to correct the humans left arm too as it is not proportioned with the other one. I have just realized it as I posted tue image. I'll fix that.

04-15-2008, 10:25 PM
Yeah. The last one looks better. In my opinion you did really well quitting the pistol from the human's hand because he is not going to shot if he looses isn't he? xd. Also the pistol was like giving the idea of a bloody future and not a safe exciting funny confrontation concept I got looking the rest of the picture. Keep the good work, I will be looking forward the background.

04-15-2008, 10:43 PM
it seems that the alien is stronger than the human. is that the way you thought?
if so, i like ....... it gives the idea of a big effort from the human side to try to win this simple competition!

pretty nice drawing!

04-15-2008, 10:45 PM
Very effective idea and good drawing on it, welcome to the contest Ramixton :-)

04-16-2008, 04:00 AM
Fun idea, Ramón! It's funny, just yesterday a friend was suggesting the idea of a thumb-wrestling match as a good idea for the Uplift Challenge. (Don't worry, it wasn't someone entering, they were just saying I should do that, but I'm happy with my own idea.) Anyhow, this is better. It feels like there's still room for you to bulk up the size of their hands and wrists: they feel a little wimpy compared to the two tough men themselves. But great design so far, keep it coming!

muy bello el sketch. suerte en el concurso . ya me imagino una luz de lampara tipo el padrino alumbrando eso!

Hi, I've done a quick colouring to establish my palette. Truth is I'm eager to start painting, but I should define the alien costume and right arm first.

04-16-2008, 04:17 PM
AresDeUbaidis, thanks, glad you like it. At first I liket the idea of implicit violence the pistol showed, but I think now as you pointed that the concept of competition between races is better defined without it.

laurentino, I didn't intend it to be so, but why not?, In fact nothing is decided yet and I have to tweak it enormously yet.

DeeVad, Nice to see you too my friend.

Walrus, Thanks a lot Mike. I'm grateful you didn´t decide on the thumb wrestling contest, else I would be doomed.

chilombiano, Gracias compadre.

Good progress Ramon. It looks good already. Ill keep an eye on this entry. buena suerte.

04-16-2008, 04:31 PM
I like your concept and sketch, looking forward to see more of your entry
Good luck to you:thumbsup:

Very solid so far, and I dig the idea of humans meeting aliens... and starting a bar brawl, or a arm wrestle in this case! Genius... :D
Just a comment, watch out for the back light, keep it on the alien side since the humans' fair space suits might unbalance the overall light. Apart from that, again , very very nice pic this one.

Muy bueno, Ramón, me encanta la idea de encontrarse y ponerse a ver quien es el más chulo del barrio a lo bar de carretera! Lo mejor de las razas en viaje espacial y acaban a tortas! Genial!

04-16-2008, 05:29 PM
Awesome drawing, Ramon! Love it! Keep it up! Fascinating to watch how you block in the colours...

04-16-2008, 05:38 PM
A very simple but in my opinion very good concept! I like the fact, that arm wrestling shows the conflict between the human and the alien but also emphasises that they have much in common (e.g. two arms :) ). Sport unites them in a conflict so to say. :)

04-16-2008, 06:49 PM
I agree with all the other comments - great, simple idea! Its also cool that they seem to be at a stand-still in the image.

One thing that I think not quite right is the alien's hand. It looks too human to me (at least at this stage). If it were more 'alien' it would enhance the image - it would be great to see how a human hand can interlock with an alien form (claw-like, or tentacles wrapping up the human arm, etc). Their connection is already the focal point, so maybe if the aliens hand were hard to get a grip on, or much larger, enveloping the human hand...

great stuff - keep up the good work!

Hey Ramón, cool concept and nice sketches!! Like the concept and the interaction on your image , really great! The palette looks working well ! For sure looking forward for more updates! ( Muy buen concepto, me gusta mucho la idea, y el color le esta dando una muy buena atmosfera a la imagen :D) Cheers mate!!

04-16-2008, 07:06 PM
Very nice concept, one that I considered myself but abandoned. I am glad I did because there is no way that I could compete with this. Excellent work full of force!

04-16-2008, 07:12 PM
Have to agree with Pixemo about the alien's arm/hand. Also the arms/hands above and behind the main characters should look distinctively alien on the aliens side - it would help - just my opinion.

I've corrected the position of the alien's arm, I think now it shows better the effort of its owner and looks more natural. I want both of the arm wrestlers sweat their prize.

Hi Pixemo, thank you for your kind words. In fact I want to show the difference between alien and human with the texturee of the skin. Maybe some tattos, don't know yet, but I think it is not necessary to use weird appendages to show it is not human. Remember Star Trek.

04-16-2008, 09:19 PM
I like this idea and composition. Simple, yet strong and focused. Keep it goin. I agree about the background hands. I would add, that in the final render, maybe you can have some of the hands in back other than at 90 degree view to the viewer. It's a simple way to add more depth to the pic.

04-17-2008, 07:35 PM
Nice concept. :) I wonder who wins that encounter. A $ on the alien!

Finally I've started painting, everything else will be decided on the fly. For some days this wil be on the "ugly stage", until the final volumes and colors are established. Endless tweaking awaits, specially on the faces and hands, the focal points of the image.
Thank you all guys for your kind words and feedback

YAY! Color! Color! Color!

Aww man, cant wait to see this finished. Looks great already. Will be following your progress closely.

04-17-2008, 11:42 PM
Nice character and coloring, My suggestion give more muscle on the hand to show power of the character:)

Good Luck with the challenge:)

I love this idea! Humorous! How about, instead of the typical brawny alien arm-wrestler, we have a very thin, almost stick-like, big headed alien looking steel-calm as the human struggles. But it not that a big deal. I also like what you have done here! Keep going Ramon! All the best!

04-18-2008, 03:14 AM
The human left arm proportion in the image is really short, only an observation. The hands over the fighters distracts a bit the attention on the action, a feeling that this fists are ready to hit the below heads, only a comment.

04-18-2008, 11:07 AM
I really like this work! Perfect idea, beautiful colors...And your style is great too.

The left arm of the human seems to me a little short at the moment...

Looking forward to see evolutions!

Hi Ramon big Fan I like your idea and the character you choose . Looking at your portfolio I remember that your "Strange Behavior" could be in that contest .

As The two characters faces are the most imortant feature of the image, I'll be spending some days on them until I'm happy with their expressions. Then there will be the hands turn. For the moment I think I have somewhat fixed the human left arm issue.
Again thank you pals.

04-20-2008, 09:04 AM
That's a really cool concept the interaction is up close and focused and demostrates a show of strength that everyone is familiar with. Good luck to you!
