Latest Update: Final Image: "I'd wrap the world around your finger" (

03 March 2008, 08:23 PM (

My initial idea was to create my setting as a huge artificial world where land and sea are actually wrapped on the inside of a cylinder whose constant rotation provides for a particular gravitational effect.

I'm still deciding how to fill this world, probably some sort of networking structures like bridges, elevators, trains... definitely high-rise buildings of some kind whose rooftops converge to a central bridge within the zero-gravity corridor.

Needless to say, more to come.

I decided to work on the water texture so that it looks more realistic when zooming in. Among the many ideas i'd like to explore the possibility of placing my characters on a water vessel, like a boat or even a cruise ship.

03 March 2008, 10:43 PM (

Sailboats work great in a futuristic setting, i'm thinking of designing something of a futuristic watercraft, with an equally long type of sail.

03 March 2008, 10:48 PM
oooooo very cool idea. I'm liking the progress, keep it up!

03 March 2008, 09:53 PM (

I wasn't aware of the three images limit for the visualisations, but oh well... i guess i'll just go ahead and post as WIP, since it basically is.

03 March 2008, 04:49 PM (

in this rendering i designed a portal-like radial illumination system, which is mostly for the sake of looks than functionality. The real light source is actually a single point light aided by global illumination from the ocean shader. From here on i'll begin brainstorming an ideal center bridge and mostly wrking on the landscape. I have already some ideas on the alien and human characters' looks. I've almost made up my mind on the design of the vessel, definitely some kind of futuristic sail boat/catamaran with some cool water effects.

03 March 2008, 10:37 AM (

getting close to the concept i want: this time i decided to have bridges running over the water/land's surface. The atmospherical effects are nowhere near what i want yet, but for now i just need a general idea so that i can start modeling the sailboat and the characters.

03 March 2008, 11:45 PM
This concenpt is very impresive! I'm having a hard time figuring out the human - alien interaction though. Keep in mind that that is the key concept behind this challenge. The sailboat thing could work, but it won't be easy to show both the characters and landscape properly.
Hope you pull this off. Good luck. :)

I have to admit i didn't start with much, besides the cylinder world concept, which is something i remember from a very old illustration on a science magazine i subscribed to when i was 13.
I'm pretty confident of my intentions now, and images are beginning to form in my mind that are definitely helping me fill the gaps.

I'll try to render the concept for a better understanding, but essentially what i want to have is a background which will be for the most part, slightly out of focus but still recognizable. The catamaran will be big in the foreground with a clear perspective showing the deck and the characters. I imagine part of the scene slightly blurred to give an idea of speed.

At this point it could be either a classic "alien bikini girls" scene with human tourists, or a "couple on vacation scene". I'm looking at a light-hearted scene with bright colors and a mid 80's feel.

03 March 2008, 02:47 AM
This is looking beautiful and has a powerful sense of scale and strangeness. The concept images so far remind me of the cylindrical EON scenes. I agree that some aliens need to be seen interacting in some way with humans but you sure have established a great setting for this to happen

03 March 2008, 04:04 PM
Beautiful concept! I am looking forward!

03 March 2008, 09:08 AM
Its looking really good, i love the feeling i get from this images.., i wanna c more

03 March 2008, 10:22 AM
I find the reduced colour palette very agreeable and the atmosphere you have created is lovely. I enjoy the alien architecture in form and rhythm, also the angle of the shot is dynamic and works. Yes, lets see some aliens! Perhaps partially seen right up in the foreground. Keep up the great work.

03 March 2008, 10:33 AM
i like the concept .. the idea of adding more bridges and stuff inside is cool ... looking forward for this .. good luck

03 March 2008, 05:08 AM (

i think i'm finally making up my mind about the setting. Also i am slowly and cautiously moving towards the placement of the actual setting for my characters... the boat!
I started drawing a few sketches, but i prefer keeping it under wraps until i can actually render the thing. I think it's pretty obvious now the theme will most probably involve alien girls in bikini and the lucky smiling human dude, 80s style. Hopefully i'll have for you guys more and more concept and visualization drawings soon! :)

... and now with boat.

03 March 2008, 05:44 AM
mmmm alien bikini girls.
I can't wait.

I like this univers! Impressive of ideas!
I can not wait to see more!

Good luck!

Boating time! Finally i started working on the actual setting after making some difficult decisions.

Considering the size of the landscape, building cities and features is rather meaningless as they would be visible only as little gray stains on the landscape, hence the decision to romove the city buildings. They were looking kind of weird anyway. From here on i'd rather work on the foreground, while designing my characters. Perhaps a boat deck, a harbour, or some other maritime feature...

04 April 2008, 02:44 AM (

ok here she comes, the first concept sketch for the alien girl. It's rough, i know, but i had very little time lately and couldn't really focus. Some clay renderings will follow hopefully in the next few days, but here is the jest:
I pictured her hair Predator-like, eyes in between classic alien image and feline eyes, mouthplate similar to thoe two guys in yellow and blue from Mortal Kombat that i can never remember the names of... Other than that... Hooters! Hooters! Hooters! :P

04 April 2008, 09:18 AM (

just fine tuning the setting now while modeling the characters. Note to self: too much glow, proportions screwed up (shrink the boats on the background or just apply depth of field? decisions... decisions...).

The colors on the sails are only partially a coincidence. I'm going to draw a final concept of the "bikini girl" with the same pattern used for the swimwear.

Note to self: possible color combination for an official flag/sailing team/country club?

The idea reminds me of a city from Randevous with Rama, a book written by Arthur C. Clark. I believe the city had the exact same theme and bridges that you're describing. Have you read the book? It's really good. Are you going to put a light source in the center to explain why the city isn't all dark?

04 April 2008, 08:36 PM
I think i remember something along those lines, but it was such a long time ago and i was living in Italy at the time, so i probably read it in Italian, lol.

I have done a lot of thinking about the lighting, and i feel that the best approach and the easiest to explain would be that the light comes from two main light sources: 1. the illuminated grid underwater 2. the clouds themselves, which are not really rain clouds but rather made of umm... neon gas, perhaps? and when electrically ignited they light up producing light and heat.

04 April 2008, 06:54 PM (

This is the first series of renderings of the alien girl mold i am working on. I imagined her race is anphibious, hence the double dorsal fin and the gills. Hands and feet will have a maximum of three fingers (2+thumb) per hand and two toes per foot. I'm not planning to use fish-like skin, as this creature is more earth-bound than sea-bound.

still working....

atill working...

04 April 2008, 03:50 AM (

this is nowhere near to my final intentions for the alien girl, but i haven't been uploading something for too long and i need to get back on track with the competition. This is a raw model, straight up skeleton with no tweaking, hair and nCloth plugins. Looks bad, i know, but the final image will be rigged with lattice cages and better shaders too.

04 April 2008, 02:24 AM (

At last! This is the my final setup! From now on it's going to be tweaking, adding and subtracting until i'm ready to render the big TIFF!

04 April 2008, 03:27 AM
Hey Fabio, really interesting idea, I really like your concept. Great previoz images and your last composition looks great!! Myybe the sail needs some wind on it, and a "curve lines" texture design on it more than the strips, only a comment :) Again really cool work!! and looking forward for more updates! Cheers mate!!

04 April 2008, 08:05 PM (

reviewed some of the textures and shaders, working on the overall look.

05 May 2008, 04:43 AM (

I think i'm close... real close...

05 May 2008, 04:49 PM (

i'm getting more and more confident this is the right camera angle i should use...

05 May 2008, 03:19 AM (

crunch time indeed! I have no idea how i got to the point of having to do everything at the last minute but here is at least the female character. The setting is gonna take some major crunch, and i'll have to resort to painted backgrounds, still 3d but i have to composite them or i'm never gonna make it to the final deadline with a rendering decent enough... ARGHHH!

The Centerfuge-driven cylindrical Microverses, once built over centuries by a race of intelligent mechanical beings of human design, orbit a dying sun, as their formerly Earth-bound population prepares to flee from the system, once every bit of green land and water was taken from Earth and transferred on the roaming microverses.
Some of the androids were so advanced as to develop relationships with some humans, more so as the race inexplicably thinned out, and quest for companionship became crucial.

Kary and her synthetic counterpart Drake, contemplate their microverse, and the blackness of the outer space, waiting for a signal to activate the navigation systems. In the silence of a solitary world, Drake holds his human companion and expresses feelings beyond the logical nature of his programming:

"If i had the power to understand the true workings of the Universe, i'd wrap a world around your finger, to show my gratitude for sparing me from loneliness as black and empty as the space we prepare to dive into."

05 May 2008, 05:56 PM (

Last and final overlay... the internal sun of the Microverse. A gaseous cluster that ignites from two polar charges at the opposite ends of the Microverse, like a neon tube.
