03 March 2008, 10:55 AM
Good luck to everybody!
Let's see if I find enough time for this.
03 March 2008, 08:53 PM
This is the first idea that came to my mind. Still many details I havent decided on.
For example, I don't know what the alien will look like, just an rough idea.
C&C would be appreciated.
03 March 2008, 01:47 AM
Funny! Concept makes me laugh, I would change the color of your alien, cause its to similar to the girl, and possibly change or take out the hair ties in the dreads. They are pink. Hmm, makes yea think..
03 March 2008, 02:02 PM
Hi Allan, thanks for yout tips. I'm also unsatisfied with the hair ties, but for now I only changed the colors.
Next things I have to think of are: "Face" and details of the alien, girl's clothes and background...
Anyway, the hardest part of this challenge will be getting into XSI, cause I want one of the free licenses. ;)
03 March 2008, 07:44 PM
This is abother approach I have thought of. Personally I prefer this one to the other. Comments and critics are welcome!
03 March 2008, 07:53 AM
I like the first idea.
03 March 2008, 05:10 PM
I also like the first one, more alien relations involved =P
I cant imagine falling in love with an alien like that. o_O
You thinking of them looking at eachother? Maybe her head tilted abit back, and eyes looking off to the side towards him, and vice versa. Oh, and I wouldnt give him more then two eyes, But thats your call.
keep it up.
04 April 2008, 10:29 AM
Thanks for your comments nerak & AmDiv.
After asking some more people and thinking about it I also decided against the second one.
The next update will be some modeling-WIPs, but before that I have to get into XSI.
Not that easy, but I'm looking forward to it. :)
04 April 2008, 06:55 PM
I'm slowly getting familiar with XSI, updates will follow more often now. :)
I began modelling the girl, this is what I've got so far. I decided on a toon-look, simply because I don't have the time for a realistic one. A realistic girl would require much more knowledge of XSI...;) c&c appreciated
04 April 2008, 07:30 PM
Finished modeling the girl.
I don't know if I should add the hair postpro or use planes with alpha textures for it...
Anyway, I begin modeling the alien now.
04 April 2008, 07:43 PM
hello Landsmann :)
I like the modelling, but the posing is stunning. looking forward to the finished scene - good look, walross
04 April 2008, 09:49 AM
Your progress is impressive, having in mind that it's the first project with xsi. I'm looking forward to what the finished scene will be like.
04 April 2008, 12:51 PM
Nice progress here. :) Keep it up and good luck!
04 April 2008, 09:00 PM
I started modeling the alien and placed it near the girl for a first impression of what the image may look like.
More to come...
04 April 2008, 09:07 PM
Thanks yakonusuke, Huggy and walross.
For the alien i decided on boxmodeling, although i prefer PolybyPoly.
Maybe I will sculpt the alien in mudbox, is that allowed if I want the XSI license?
04 April 2008, 10:01 PM
Very nice.. I loved!!!
04 April 2008, 11:25 PM
This is looking great. Much more ambitious than mine! hahaha!
I can see you plan to make the "berries" on the tree glow
If you're using XSI on an ATi card, I've noted that mass-copying of glows and materials do not seem to work properly.
I'm not sure why that happens. But I'm just letting you know so that you won't be surprised.
I was supposed to try mass-duplicating a spiral of laser bolts in my project but it wouldn't work properly. :(
Your concept makes me think of the film "Somewhere in Time"..... Where everything looks "dreamy" and "sunshine drenched". This can be an effect you explore.
04 April 2008, 09:45 PM
Going on modeling the alien.
I deleted the whole alien-face and decided to do it again, cause I wasn't satisfied with it.
04 April 2008, 09:53 PM
decosouza: Thanks, I'm happy you like it!
CGIPadawan: Thank you for the tipp, but luckily I'm using Nvidia not ATI.
If it still won't work, I have to do the Glow in Photoshop, not a big problem either.
I don't know the film "Somewhere in Time" (well maybe I do but with a different german name;) ), but that dreamy look is exactly what I'm trying to achieve!
04 April 2008, 10:33 PM
Looks great. How are you liking xsi? It gets easier, and quickly becomes a very powerful weapon. Be careful.LOL I like your concept, maybe they could be sharing some living alien food or something to that effect. Small furry rodents, worms etc.. Great job.
04 April 2008, 09:55 PM
Here's my approach to the alien face I, which I like more than the last. Changes: Move the area below the eyes back,, looks weird as it is now. Some smaller improvements have to be made.
I hope I finish modelling the alien tomorrow, because I have the weekend reserved for beginning the texturing part!
04 April 2008, 09:57 PM
sasquatch70: Great idea, I will place some odd food around them.
Thank you for the tipp!
I hope I finish in time, XSI is really a great "weapon". ;)
04 April 2008, 09:50 PM
UVs of the girl done in Blender...no time to learn it in XSI.
But I rendered it in XSI, to test the import/export and it works well. No I can begin painting the textures.
04 April 2008, 10:06 PM
You're going grat mate! the girl pose is really very good. Have you made the models in blender? any chance to tell us how is your workflow? keep going the great work!!
04 April 2008, 06:39 AM
I'm glad you like it. :)
The models are completely done in XSI, then I exported them to Blender (.obj) to do the UV-mapping. After that I reimport them in XSI and apply the textures (painted in Photoshop) to them. Finally render it using mental ray.
The alien's workflow will look like this:
Postpro in PS
I really like XSI's rendertree, but I struggle applying NormalMaps...
But I do everything to finish in time!
04 April 2008, 08:04 PM
Here's my progress on the textures.
I think she needs hair...
Crits and comments highly appreciated.
04 April 2008, 08:57 PM
You're going great. I just think that the two fingers of right hand are too separeted and the thumb is too small. About the hair what do you intent to do.. hair simulation or a mesh?
04 April 2008, 06:20 PM
Defenitly no simulation for the hair, either meshes or painting it completely in PS.
There will be gras around the fingers anyway, so let's see how it looks. ;)
05 May 2008, 11:13 AM
Just to prove I'm still alive. ;)
Some minor errors in the meshes, which need to be fixed and the girl's hand is beneath the grounds surface, but this will change within the next update.
Current status: modelling nearly finished, textures of girl/cloth finished, alien texture halfway finished.
Render done in Indigo.
05 May 2008, 11:30 PM
This looks great.
I'm a bit concerned about the deadline for your sake. But just keep at it!
05 May 2008, 06:02 PM
I have to hurry up...
Modeling finished so far, now I'm doing texture work.
05 May 2008, 06:32 PM
Man, I just love this concept! Lots of emotions and cool shapes!
For the second C in c&c, I was hoping you could redo the girl's shoes, as it seems
to be contradicting all other soft forms! But of course from my point of view!
Your initial color choice is working just nicely!
05 May 2008, 06:46 PM
I like your picture it is very cute, sweet, and lighty. With beautilfull colors.
girl model is well balanced withna good shape.
05 May 2008, 11:45 PM
HOly! How original!
Lookin really great! Love the simple rounded forms, the characters, the colors.
I love seeing people who set thier own trends with thier work, and you are doing this exactly!
Is it just me or is the default white working with this image? NOt for everything, but maybe keep some white in there....with the pink and blue its quite striking. That color combo works nicely with the soft forms.
05 May 2008, 05:45 PM
Deadline is near and next week are my final exams at school... But that shouldn't be a big problem, there's not much left to do.
I decided to leave the tree and the ground white, because of your feedback. (Thank you very much :D)
I'm not satisfied with the color of the blanket yet, it's somewhat disturbing imho.
I still have to do some minor mesh corrections.
So what do you think about the alien skin, is the specularity ok? I think there's slightly too much bump, but I will try some different settings.
c&c appreciated as always
05 May 2008, 05:55 PM
varma: thank you, I'll redo the shoes within my next update.
DaVee: Your kind words are motivating me, thank you.
winchester: Thank you very much, I decided to stick to the blue-white-pink combo. That's why I don't know which color would be best for the blanket they are sitting on.
05 May 2008, 09:10 PM
Nice to see it getting done.
About the alien shader:
I really like the marshmallow-like look of the alien, it fits nicely in the non-realistic style of the whole image.
But the specularity should be much softer in my opinion, just, well, marshmallow-like.
05 May 2008, 09:42 PM
This is the update, at which I took care of all your tips. (thanks again)
I smoothed the shoes a litte(still a bit tweaking needed), decreased the spec of the alien, increased subdivision at certain areas and, as promised, she's got hair! ;)
c&c plaese (I hope for the last time for this pic)
05 May 2008, 09:36 PM
Blanket finished, now I will render the final.
Except someone points out something terrible wrong with the picture...
So what do you think, any last advices?
05 May 2008, 11:25 AM
It was a beautiful day during vacation, they were sitting under one of the trees and enjoing the sun. Wendy finally had the courage to ask Joe to spend the afternoon with her. And to her surprise he agreed.
Here they are, joking, laughing, having fun and slowly getting closer to each other. In this moment, both suddenly were quiet and Wendy deeply looked into his beautiful eyes. If he kisses her, she would be in heaven...
Finally finished it, programs used: XSI, Blender, Indigo.
Thanks for all your advices und comments.
I hope you like it!
05 May 2008, 12:47 PM
I like the hyper-real quality of this render. It is a bit like a childrens toy or something. One thing that maybe you could look at is the neck of the girl. It looks a little odd that her head is so far back. I think you have got a nice texture on the alien.
05 May 2008, 10:23 PM
I got problem with my mailbox or something i din't receive cgtalk mail. So I coouldn't answer earlier.
Last update is really good. Nice idea to add saturation it give power to your image.
I don't know what you want to add more to your Image, but i hope you'll finish it in time.
Just one thing, may you get a very little Bump to the ground. Looks like it's not textured.
If you have time of course, and if you think it's necessary.
05 May 2008, 10:28 PM
Thank you for your advices.
I fixed her odd neck and added bump to the ground.
Hope you like it!
05 May 2008, 11:33 AM
Just some color corrections.
I consider it finished now.
Would love to hear some comments.
05 May 2008, 12:07 PM
Congrats to the finished piece! Well done, Phil!
I would have loved a nice background and some differences within the color-maps.
Maybe a little lower point of view would have made the perspective more exciting.
Anyway good luck you!
