It is a great pleasure to see you in this challenge Grzegorz !

03 March 2008, 12:42 PM
Witam mistrza  i życzę powodzenia

Good luck!

03 March 2008, 05:25 AM (

I will go for this look, most likely, a little weak, sad, unsecure alien in the human world :)

03 March 2008, 05:44 AM
Can't wait to see what you come up with're going to make for some tough competition!

03 March 2008, 07:09 AM

Well, this is the first time I'm entering the challenge.
I liked the topic, I liked that it actually doesnt have to be based on the book.
Always been fascinated by aliens ( who wasn't), since I'm actually doing some dull tasks at work, I figured, I will try to make an interesting trailer, maybe something more...

I have the basic idea, and. well... I just hope I'll finish it :)

03 March 2008, 03:52 AM
Hi man!! Good luck on contest

I really enjoy your style and your aliens in your portifolio

03 March 2008, 02:32 PM
super sketches!
Cant wait to see storyboard:)!

Good luck to you - you have lot of exerinence in animation and lot more and that will be helpfull. Even shortest movie is very serious work and you are someone who can do it - can do it well :)

03 March 2008, 04:57 PM

It's great to meet you here. I've been fascinated with your art for a long time now. It will be a pleasure to watch everything evolves on this thread. True inspiration.

Good luck!

03 March 2008, 12:07 AM (

first pass modeling on the alien face.

03 March 2008, 05:55 AM (

he is really sad, that one...

03 March 2008, 06:01 AM
Here is the dilema.
I have the idea for the whole , well, teaser, short, or whatever.
But I really dont want to spoil it.
can I just post the partial treatment, or partial animatic, without the last scene, last shot??

Anyway, my sad little alien , finds himself in a locked glass room. He wakes up, drowsy, shocked, he doesnt really remember what happened to him.
Slowly, the images of what happened come back, like a painful flash backs...
He has been traveling... he lost control of the navigation... he crashed....
He has been found by... humans?? they didnt understand him... he has been tortured...

well, I dont want to say anything more yet :)

03 March 2008, 06:09 AM (

he is really sad, that one...

03 March 2008, 07:19 AM
He's a cute little guy :D

Can't imagine you'd have a problem with leaving the last scene out...I think the storyboard/pre-vis "stage" of the contest is just to show that you're planning out your work.

03 March 2008, 06:51 PM
Hey, Grzegorz! I just watched The Mist yesterday, great film, I know there wasn't a big VFX budget but the CG kicked a lot of ass anyways. Can't wait to see what you come up with here.

03 March 2008, 05:47 PM
very nice work .. and good character ...
waiting for your next step ...!
keep posting ..

regards (

03 March 2008, 06:03 PM
Great start!
Nice modelling and really like your sketches, Grzegorz. Good luck)))

03 March 2008, 08:11 PM
Oh, Grzesiek, what a surprise! :)

Good I`m gonna start in team group.... ;)

I like your idea and knowing your skills and style I`m not worried about final result ;)
Good luck!

03 March 2008, 10:39 AM
nice aliens design!Good luck to you!

03 March 2008, 11:03 AM
Hello !!!

Very nice alien , I like the proportions of the body too... .

good luck and keep it up ...

03 March 2008, 12:10 PM
I can t even say you will make good competition since you are way of my league :D. Nice char so far.

Keep it up!

03 March 2008, 03:03 PM

03 March 2008, 03:04 PM
Miło mi rywalizowac z jednymi z najlepszych. Niezły koncept jak narazie. Pozdrawiam

See you on the end of the challange :)

03 March 2008, 03:56 PM
yeah, holy crap! i just watched your demo reel. with that talent, it almost isn't even fair. ha, ha. can't wait to see the end result of your project.

03 March 2008, 06:09 AM
Hey, thanks guys, but you know, the key is not to start, but to complete the project.
That will be the most difficult part :)

I will post some modelling updates soon

03 March 2008, 02:21 AM (

Started working on the body. I guess this is the most boring part of the project for me, can't wait to start texturing.

03 March 2008, 01:36 PM
great modeling!

maybe the body looks way too human.
just a thought

04 April 2008, 07:02 AM (

some more polygons added.

04 April 2008, 05:38 PM
Nice model but I dont'l like that hands. They are to much humanoid and making strong contrast to this alien. Maby 3 fingers will close this case

04 April 2008, 01:23 AM
... maybe its a hybrid....

04 April 2008, 12:25 PM
Hey just saw ur wondrful portfolio! Now I knw y u r here in this challenge :-)
Love those aliens..
So far looks gud..waiting fr texturing..

and ya..that old alien is well done!

04 April 2008, 01:53 PM
Great alien

04 April 2008, 03:14 PM
... maybe its a hybrid....

Should there be spoiler tags around there? ;)

04 April 2008, 09:59 AM (

Started playing with some textures layers and lighting.

04 April 2008, 10:18 AM
WOW! rock solid model and very realistic rendering! SOO COOL!!!

04 April 2008, 10:54 AM
Dammit man....give the rest of us peons a chance!

04 April 2008, 10:57 AM
Cool dude! The lighting is the dark feel.

I also agree with Pyke....we might as well throw in the towel right now :( :(

Is your alien rigged yet?

04 April 2008, 04:02 PM
I've seen your demoreel in your portfolio. Aren't you supposed to be among the judges? ... Just joking! Anyway, impressive work indeed. I can't wait to see your storyboard!

04 April 2008, 09:38 PM
Actually, I had to redo UV completely.
These were just too sloppy.
I'm still working on the overall look, so this it will change.

Tyson, no, this one is not rigged yet, although, I have put the biped guide inside the mesh :)
I'm using Softimage XSI for it.

04 April 2008, 06:14 AM

Real Film style... CONGRATULATIONS!!

04 April 2008, 08:55 AM
Awesome lighting. At first I thought those pictures were some screednshots from a movie. What render engine did u use? Thanks

Keep it up.

04 April 2008, 09:19 AM (

After redoing the UV's, new face paint in progress

04 April 2008, 09:22 AM
simovici, I'm using Fprime for Lightwave.

04 April 2008, 09:46 AM
This is looking cool - although you're teasing us by not revealing your story!

04 April 2008, 09:49 AM
Oh yea! Now we're talking!!!

04 April 2008, 09:23 PM
Some great work on texturing and lighting in here!!
but These eyes won't let me sleep tonight ;)

04 April 2008, 10:00 AM
Beautiful...I love the cataracts on his (her?) eyes.

04 April 2008, 02:02 AM
great detail on the texturez

04 April 2008, 02:32 AM
I like the texture a lot. Look forward to seeing more.

04 April 2008, 09:44 AM
Looks awesome, love the lighting and post work (I assume its post work thats giving the look?)
Keep it up!

04 April 2008, 04:20 AM
So, I have been working on some blend shapes.
This is the test, I'm still working on it, before I start binding to the rig.

I will try and post update soon.

04 April 2008, 04:47 AM
Hey mate...pretty awesome!

I have to say though....I'm not entirely sure I'm a fan of the erratic breathing motion. At first it almost looked like the skin was rippling, as opposed to expanding/contracting.

I think maybe if you tone it down a bit it'll look, take out the cheek motion and some of the neck motion.

04 April 2008, 04:54 AM
you are most likely right, however, I will have to see how these blendshapes work with the overall body and head motion. I made some other test with just the camera moving around the static head, and these shapes are way less visible, so, Ill just wait and see how it behaves in the actual shot.

Thanks for the comment though.

04 April 2008, 06:29 AM
Ah very true very true!

04 April 2008, 07:14 AM
at the top of his head during the mid shot there's a ridge in his skull. it feels a little to severe a change so wondered if it was intentional - if it is then it'll probably feel nice in a shot with more rotation etc.

going very nice :)

04 April 2008, 08:49 AM (

This is a test animation with some blend shapes. No rig yet.

04 April 2008, 09:37 AM
AMAZING JOB!!! great so far!:buttrock: u are on the winning way!

04 April 2008, 11:31 AM
That's icredible job you did!My only crit will be,the mouth is a little bit human, but the rest is EXCELENT!:buttrock:

04 April 2008, 11:56 AM
hey there! nice test animation! i liked the previous render of his eyes tho, with the flushed white or light blueish color...looks more alien than the one you have in the test anim.

04 April 2008, 02:07 PM
i sould not crit but i like the old eyes you had that made the creature look blind but other then that i love the scar detail around the mouth and i think the mouth fits the the alien well. keep up the good work.

04 April 2008, 03:18 PM
You're moving along well. I'd like to see some different angles of that. Nice work. No crits really, as it's a test.

04 April 2008, 08:05 PM
Great Job, hope to see some of your techinques soon.. Good luck

04 April 2008, 06:09 AM
this is looking sick! my friend and your co-worker miguel, told me to check this thread out, said you had some really cool stuff goin on. i really dig the animation on the face, the scrunching of the flesh in the nose and eyes looks great. i also really like the twitchy eyeballs...really cool stuff, looking forward to more

04 April 2008, 07:03 AM
Very nice work here! should be a really great entry. Looking forward to seeing some more.

04 April 2008, 10:11 AM (

working on the textures for the whole body.
I have skinned a basic rig very fast, the deformations are just temporary.

04 April 2008, 11:00 AM
Amazing work so far man !

I really love the texture/illumination you've made for this Alien... It's still a wip but..

04 April 2008, 11:47 AM
Hey! really great work sofar!
I really like it; specially the textures and also Head model,
though you can work more on body Btw it looks fine by now yet! you know, as far as comparing with human anatomy, it looks like a childe alien coz of his big head;
Btw it looks great and awsome! just awsome yet! and fore sure he isn'e human atlast!

keep workin man, I'll loOkin for more! you'r going really great...

best regards, mim!:wip:

04 April 2008, 02:33 PM

i need only need to see one of your character!! (i never made one)

Itīs one of the Best for me.... Congratulations again!!

04 April 2008, 02:47 PM
Looking really really good. I agree with mim about the head size though. Other than that, this is coming along nicely. Good job!!!

04 April 2008, 04:31 AM
hi!, tnx for visit! the blendshape test looks awesome, so alive!!

04 April 2008, 10:02 AM (

shading tests and DOF treatment

04 April 2008, 10:47 AM
Awesome shader work. Your style is inspiring! Infact, Im going to relook at my shaders tonight... ;)

04 April 2008, 04:04 PM
after saw your last work...

NO COMMENTS!!!.... (pic can speak alone)

i need a coffe time!!

04 April 2008, 02:11 AM
i have liked your work since the begining and i would say the only thing about the shaders is that your taking away from the detail of the scars on the chest area, if going for realism then you sould show off the great texture work you have done as well as shadows and shaders. other then that the peice is coming together wonderfully, im impressed.

04 April 2008, 06:23 AM (

Hi there ;)
Here is the first anim WIP, with the rig somewhat starting to be usable, still tons of stuff to do, I have no idea what to do with the long stringy things for example :)

04 April 2008, 08:19 AM
Hello. I like the lighting but some parts of skin seem to be too glossy (cheast part especially ) It doesen't fit the lighting for other parts of the body like shoulders et.

04 April 2008, 12:43 PM
Really really a great job!!!

maybe the long stringy things could be a sort of sixth sense for the alien or an uplift of ear and then move exploring the air around the head.?

I Rest tuned for updates

04 April 2008, 04:18 PM
awesome stuff so far Grzegorz! looking forward to more!:bounce:

04 April 2008, 08:09 PM
Agreed!. Since the spec is a separate pass, I will be working on the break up mask for it.
Im happy with the spec around the eyes and nose/mouth area though.

04 April 2008, 09:50 AM
What a quality appearance. It seems like one of a real movie aliens.

I agree with fgdf. Glossy parts make it seem like got wet at those areas.

04 April 2008, 04:50 PM
Wow man it's really scary creature, very good design and modelling.
Keep on textures ans detailes, very good job.

Work work work !!!

04 April 2008, 07:54 PM
animation test is simply amazing...

04 April 2008, 07:40 PM
This ones ready for the big screen :). Model/texture/lighting/animation all coming together. The blendsape test shocked me at first with all the movement but man I couldn't stop watcing it! Not sure what your plans are for the final movie but I'm sure it will be great.

04 April 2008, 08:10 PM
Hollywood quality  The alien looks very wet though.

04 April 2008, 09:29 PM
believable, scarily so.
I love the fast rate of breathing, like he can't get enough out of the air for his alien lungs without doubling the rate of breaths.
and the glistening works for me, I see it as a comination of sweat, snot/mucus, and tears.
I'd pay to watch a movie with that in, more believable than AVP for a start.

04 April 2008, 09:38 PM
Rock and Roll!

04 April 2008, 04:39 PM
This one seems really so impressive!

04 April 2008, 03:28 AM (

work in progress, 2 shots, so far I'm happy with the rendering times, beauty pass takes about 40 seconds per frame in 1k resolution (with displacement, and sss)
Long live Steve Worley :)

animation lives here:

04 April 2008, 07:24 AM
This will be a great entry! BRAVO!:buttrock:

04 April 2008, 07:36 AM
40 seconds? Wow! F-Prime is a very impressive renderer! I sit at anything under 10 minutes per frame to be amazing! :D

Looking very cool...Im interested to see the environment.

04 April 2008, 08:40 AM
Great! It look like a ragdoll animation very uniqe and i love it ... but i still don't like frontal specularities ;)

04 April 2008, 11:46 AM
Excellent work !
I agree about the specularity...

04 April 2008, 11:54 AM
The Alien makes a confused impression.
A You used Rotoscope-Help for the AnimationsJob? :applause:

04 April 2008, 12:25 PM
Wonderful developement  I like.

04 April 2008, 03:49 PM
wow! perfect dude :)

04 April 2008, 06:31 AM
great work. perhaps to much dof (the alien look like a doll in the animation).
40s/frame on what kind of pc ?
do you make some color correction or is it the hdri colors ?

04 April 2008, 07:28 AM
Glad you like it so far.
Still tons of stuff to do...

visionmaster2: I didnt say how big my alien is... maybe he is tiny :)
I'm not using any hdri, just area lights. Yes the whole thing is colorcorrected.

04 April 2008, 08:58 AM

I just looked at your animation. It looks so solid. It like an up to date ray harryhausen scene.

Loved it.

04 April 2008, 03:50 PM
Holy crap! Amazing.

04 April 2008, 11:13 PM
The shaders are amazing! I'd love to get even 50% of that level of realism in my entry... all the coments on animation, I agree, but I guess it's just a blocking-in of action, and will be refined later... Do you have a story, or just the actors yet? I'm really interested in what's gonna happen to the poor guy...

04 April 2008, 09:49 AM (

This is my little guy inside his ship, getting ready to land on Earth, checking his assignment.

animation lives here:

04 April 2008, 10:16 AM
nice shot,Will be agreat movie!:buttrock:

04 April 2008, 11:14 AM
excellent! i guess you will be done with it soon : ))

04 April 2008, 12:15 PM
thats a realy impressiv wok and rendering...i hope the final movie will be this quallity

04 April 2008, 12:22 PM
heh, heh - it's all so natural looking - bloke holding steering, needs to check map, picks up map in one hand then let's go of wheel completely to look at map!!! He just needs to lean forward slightly and steer it with his elbows like the locals here do...! That would be hilarious, this is brilliant work, I check back here every day now, what a great artist/performance.

04 April 2008, 05:13 PM
That's really great stuff. I think the modeling, movement, texture and lighting are extraordinary. I especially like the pulsating chest and the deformations around the armpits and neck. The only thing I noticed as odd, and this is after a close second viewing, is that the alien's right trapezius bulges a little too much when he's holding the instructions/map. I can't wait to see the next clip.

04 April 2008, 05:42 PM
really great progress! Love the latest shot:buttrock:

04 April 2008, 05:55 PM
Hey Grzegorz, everything is super amazing.

Are you using XSI to model/rig everything and then LW/Fprime to render out?

How is this pipeline working for you?

04 April 2008, 08:56 AM
Hey thanks ;)
Glad you like it so far.

Well, overall I'm planning to do 25 shots (!!!) 17 will include character(s).
... I know, way too much, but maybe .. one day I will finish it ;)

XSI - Fprime pipe is working pretty well. I have made the whole 8 minutes short (ARK) using combination of both, and I'm pretty happy with the overall speed. Its just that creating render layers in LW is so painful...

But the speed makes it up for it :)

04 April 2008, 09:49 AM

"The only thing I noticed as odd, and this is after a close second viewing, is that the alien's right trapezius bulges a little too much when he's holding the instructions/map. I can't wait to see the next clip."

Yeah. funny, I have noticed it in the render, somehow missed it in Open gl previews. You are right., I will fix it in the next pass, hopefully - :)

04 April 2008, 10:11 AM
Hey Grzegorz. I cant examine to forums because I don't have enough time. I saw your works one week ago. Now ım looking again. Your work is really excellent. :bounce: Im sure, will be great movie. Congrats :wip:

04 April 2008, 06:47 AM (

Working on the environments.
They will be based on the real, live action plates. composited, painted over etc.

04 April 2008, 08:50 PM
I like the style of your creations - One can say it's your work by watching just a single still
keep it up! Congrats

04 April 2008, 07:33 AM (

Some progress of comps, environments, and the alien spaceship.

04 April 2008, 07:58 AM

I LOVE that last shot.

04 April 2008, 08:27 AM
fantastic! wow man, your lighting and render are really hard to beat! :D the animation is awesome, very realistic, like it a lot!!

04 April 2008, 09:04 AM
indeed, that's awsome :)

The first shot, with the vertical perspective, is crazy, i love it, and the last one too :buttrock:
I have a crit for the other though (only a minor detail, but you love details isn't it? :D )

('s maybe a tactic to slow you a bit :D )

in the shot 2 and 3: the dof seems a bit too regular there, it looks similar at the ship, and at the feets of your Alien. If it was a closer shot, it will not be a problem, but here, with the full alien body, it disturb me a bit.
The result is that the Alien seems a bit "paste" on the blurred background.

04 April 2008, 09:04 AM
man, you cut me deep!
great work!

04 April 2008, 02:00 PM
Wow! I really wish I had this level of skill!

Awesome work so far!

04 April 2008, 05:45 PM
Just awesome work there man, I expected no less from you. I met you at Cafe but it has been a while so you probably don't even remember me ;)

This is looking sweet! looking forward to your final entry.

04 April 2008, 02:13 PM
That last shot really is amazing, nice work!

04 April 2008, 02:56 PM
ABSOLUTE!!! a true pro work!

05 May 2008, 02:52 AM
It looks really great all the best.

05 May 2008, 12:32 PM
I guess we have a winner ._.
best work seen so far

05 May 2008, 12:55 PM
Just out of interest, are you using motion capture for this?

05 May 2008, 05:21 PM
Thanks everyone for the reply.

dustbin1uk, - no, I dont use mocap, but I use video reference of myself, acting out the alien, lots of fun :)

SNoWs - thanks, good times, old Cafe building.... :)

Goul, - thanks for pointing this out, you are absolutely right, I need to balance the DOF there. Infact, the picking up shot is my least favourite one, I need to fix lots of things there.

05 May 2008, 05:44 PM
You`re doin it again, damn you! ;)

05 May 2008, 06:03 PM
the last video is excellent !
The first shot is very beautiful...

05 May 2008, 08:14 PM
In that case, VERY well done!:applause:

05 May 2008, 08:02 AM (

Working on the animation and environments.
still so much stuff to do.
Here - the fire, is actually shot on my cheap camcorder.

05 May 2008, 08:06 AM
Yea I hear ya...the deadline is coming fast! I hope I get mine done :( (and I hope you get yours done!)

The shot looks great...and the fire works well!

05 May 2008, 08:26 AM
Yeh,That looks GREAT! Hope you finish on time! Will be agreat movie !:buttrock:

05 May 2008, 02:09 PM
I should stop watching your sequences right now. Your skills are so strong, I believe there is so much coming from your high class production experiences. No words, just finish this on time so we don't need to be in stress awaiting winner list. Good luck!

05 May 2008, 02:36 PM
Looks amazing!

What's with the jumping flame at the left of the craft door?

Was the ground plane real or CGI? This really is doing great though!

Keep it up!!

05 May 2008, 10:18 AM
Thats looks super amazing:scream:

05 May 2008, 11:57 AM
Amazing work man!!! Very high quality! I am sure you will deliver something suberb. My most sincere congratulations....

05 May 2008, 09:51 PM

Inspiring . .

05 May 2008, 11:00 PM
Wow...the ground work is amazig...and i love the camera shot...very dramatic...can't wait to see more!

Looks great!! another master at work.
very inspiring!!

05 May 2008, 05:08 PM
This looks really good Grzegorz... I really like your lighting choices... Hope you get to finish this.. I saw in another thread that you got a new job... Good luck with that as well...

Have fun,

05 May 2008, 09:36 PM
Hi Guys.
Thank you for such positive feedback.
I have been working long hours to finish the shots.
I will post something soon. It's actually much much more work then I anticipated :)
But, well, its the long weekend now, so I hope I will have almost all shots done, at the certain level, at least.

05 May 2008, 06:55 AM (

Here are some frames from the film.
still tons of work to do.
but well, I'm getting there.
thank you all for the awesome feedback

05 May 2008, 06:58 AM
F@#$ yea! You'd better finish it!

05 May 2008, 06:59 AM
Holy Smokes Greg you are awesome. Looks great!

05 May 2008, 07:05 AM
Im just gonna give up now.

I saw the closeup shot of this alien. It has a soul. The Hellboy movie the blue swiming creature with Hellboy was the first one i thought had a soul.

05 May 2008, 07:14 AM
Greg you are a Polish Dynamo. A creative Maelstrom. Nice Work! A question... what kind of sowtare do you use for modelling and what for compositing ?
Thanks in advances.

05 May 2008, 10:30 AM
OK these are some comments from people here: "Of course he's rocking! He's a true master at 3D...." and "I was still using light arrays to try to have some soft shadowing when he was already using ambient occlusion!"

Keep up're inspiring (and always had) our souls!!!

06 June 2008, 03:14 PM
Woot! This looks amazing!

Keep going!

06 June 2008, 04:12 PM
Hello :)

I'm glad you guys like it.
I have serious concerns though, if I iwll actually make it on time.
I have a teaser 99% ready (30 sec edit), I borrowed the music from my short ARK for it, and it works pretty well edited a bit.
Now, for the whole piece, wich will be about 90 sec long, I still have 3 more shots to go.
All assets are done though, so with a bit of luck, maybe Ill finish it on time.

I still havent figured out the music for film though.

Oh, and studiozeronove, I'm using combination of SoftimageXSI for modelling , rigging and animation - and Lightwave for all the rendering.

06 June 2008, 04:28 PM
Hey Grzegorz,

Chris Haigh did the music for my trailer...he is a master, and may be able to help you with some music. I know its short notice, but he is a miracle worker, and theres no harm in asking. ;)

I seriously hope you finish! I cant wait to see this entry!

06 June 2008, 08:33 PM
With all the server problems, I've been finding it hard to post here.

because.... it looks so great
especially - very good lighting

06 June 2008, 08:32 AM (

animation lives here:

This is the second pass on the trailer.
Still some color tweaks, and typography stuff to do.

06 June 2008, 09:44 AM
Looks good. Congratulations to come near to the end.

06 June 2008, 10:17 AM
looks great, but I don't like a story
I just don't know what's going on there...

06 June 2008, 10:28 AM
Cool man! I love that close-up shot of the alien after the resounding fog-horn sound.

I hope you have time to finish the entire short film on time though, because it's hard to tell what the story is about from this clip alone (as it should be, since a trailer is only meant to whet our appetites for more---which this one does for sure!).

06 June 2008, 11:34 AM
What a work I just saw the trailer ;;;and the only thing I want to do after is to tell you It's WONDERFUL atmosphere work everything . Congratulation and good luck if you need it .
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

06 June 2008, 01:00 PM
All the stuff here is amazing! but i agree that the editing kills the story a bit.
keep it up man! you got gold stuff to work with!

06 June 2008, 01:46 PM
Woot! Yeah! This is awesome!

I hope you finish the whole thing, even if you go past the deadline. It looks amazing!!

06 June 2008, 02:42 PM
Hey, thanks :)

Well, the whole point is, that I dont tell the story in the trailer.
You have to watch the film, to understand whats going on :)

06 June 2008, 02:46 PM
Yeah, that's the point of a trailer, to entice the viewer to watch the film. :)

06 June 2008, 03:05 PM
"If you were a stranger . . 'what' wud you say . . defines human being"

beautiful idea G..

06 June 2008, 09:41 PM
Simply wonderful!!!

06 June 2008, 06:59 AM (

Here are some of the new shots, for the film.

I have also updated the trailer, with better quality 720p version (

06 June 2008, 09:26 PM
This is one of the best entries in my opininon, but then again we don't expect anthing less from you! :)
I really like this trailer, but one thing buggs me, and that's the use of the white portrait of your alien twice. To me it looks as if you're out of clips and recycle what you got.
Anyway, I'd really like to see a finished short, so the trailer works for me!

Best luck!

06 June 2008, 09:39 PM
Hi Evengi.

Yes, you are right, it is a WIP trailer, there are some shots still in progress, - and the repetitive shot is a placeholder for now.

Glad you like it :)

06 June 2008, 02:19 PM
Besides your modeling skills, I'm impressed with the natural movement of the 3D alien and the sound recording as well--not to mention the editing of the film. Did you do that all by yourself? (I know how challenging it is, since that what I'm trying to do in this challenge.)

06 June 2008, 02:37 PM
EXXCCCELLENT WORK ! Impressive! I'm KO... Congratulations!

06 June 2008, 03:34 PM
Ooooooooo I wanna see the whole film! NOW! :D

06 June 2008, 12:34 PM
and I'll say it again: WOW!

06 June 2008, 12:50 PM

what soft/plug do you use for the color correction ?

superbe work :buttrock:

Well, I have changed the title once more :)
Revised the script, (last 2 days - it was pretty crazy)
and here it is: (

I will be putting some making of tomorrow, and I will upload proper flash link.

I have been using Softimage XSI (for all modeling, rigging and animation)
Lightwave (for some additional modeling, shaders, lighting and rendering)
Fprime (for rendering)
I have also used some Zbrush here and there, and a lot of practical effects, props, and all "in camera" tricks - that made the whole process fun :)

Hope you enjoy it.

06 June 2008, 05:22 AM
Hey mate,

Wonderful to see it done! I enjoyed it very much :)

One question though, that was slightly confusing about the the beginning when the ship was landing, it looked like there were houses underneath of it. Then, when the alien got out everything was destroyed. I assumed that the destruction was caused by the massive impact of the ship landing (which would make the situation very ironic, because he unintentially destroyed the lifeforms he was coming to visit)...but at the end it seemed as though the destruction was caused by the atomic blast described in the newspaper? Anyways, I wasn't sure....

Great work!

06 June 2008, 05:29 AM
Hey Tyson.
I'ts actually a good point.
I assumed the houses underneath when the ship is landing wouldn't mean too much.
But if this makes you feel confused, I think I might actually change this matte painting. Afterall its an easy fix. :)

But right now.. Im watching BSG last episode :)

06 June 2008, 05:38 AM
Hmmm....I'd almost suggest keeping the houses in, and taking the last newspaper shot out. Then maybe (if you have time...I know time is short) inserting a very short shot when he lands showing the impact of the ship on the ground (something short like, the ship touching down with the camera close to it, and a massive shockwave of dust hitting the screen--then cut to black).

I thought the theme of unintentional destruction was powerful (a warning for us, since we often make impacts on our environment that we don't realize), whereas the theme of nuclear holocaust seems less creative. That being said, if you do take the houses out, that would certainly make the nuclear holocaust theme clearer, and it would probably be just as strong (since some people might not "get" the environmental destruction theme, whereas the nuclear holocaust theme is much "clearer").

06 June 2008, 05:46 AM
Nuclear holocaust, yes.
look at the date on the newspaper :)

All this environmental destruction thing, is completey unintentional, lol
All the backgrounds, are infact my former backyard. - I didnt alter it in anyway. its just the dirt on the ground. Funny you see it as a destructed earth :) hehe, one cheap flashlight, dirt and a cheapy camera .

all the best

06 June 2008, 05:52 AM
Grzegorz....amazing. You definitely have an eye for awsome camera work!

After seeing your making of aswell, I didnt realise that so many practicle elements were used in the final film. Its amazing that the first thing we think is 'do it in CG', where honestly, you pulled off some INCREDIBLE shots with a flashlight and some gravel. Its definitely changed my way of thinking how 'cg shorts' can be done.
I would love to see a more detailed making of, not nessesarily in video format, but as a CGTalk feature. I have a feeling that no matter the winner of the challenge, that the CGSociety will ask you for such an article. ;)

With regards to the story, I was on the same page as Tyson until the final shot. I thought that the (small?) alien, with its massive ship, had destroyed the city below it. The final shot did put me on the correct path tho.

The sound is awsome. Its got a James Cameron feel to it. I watched Aliens again (for the 100 000 000'th time), and the shots where they come across the derilict (directors cut), has almost the exact sound design as your short. You are in amazing company!

Excellent camera work, shot design, concept, story, sound, and editing. You, along with Tyson, should sweep the individual categorys-no questions asked! It has truely been a pleasure to enter the challenge with you, and if anything, I have grown from watching you work!

06 June 2008, 07:42 PM
During watching your film I remember a animation film called mantis, witch i often saw after the release. - So after the film I checked your webside and saw that you made mantis.:)

Thumbs up for your great work!

06 June 2008, 02:37 AM
Well, what can I say ... The visual is breathtaking for sure. You changed my way to see a CG job .. the integration of the CG parts with the live action ones is perfect!!

Congratulations man. Incredible job. And even you don't need it, good luck

06 June 2008, 05:07 AM
Honestly, this looks simply great... Congrats on completing it and best of luck in the challenge...

06 June 2008, 05:21 PM

06 June 2008, 06:25 PM
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Inspiring to see your use of practical effects, and particularly great audio work too.

and... BLADE RUNNER!! nice. :)

06 June 2008, 12:03 AM
Hey, thanks for the great feedback.
Im happy you liked it.

Pyke, yes the practical stuff always adds this element of reality into the shot, plus it's so much fun to do.
And with really cheap HD cameras nowdays, there is no reason not to do it :)

06 June 2008, 09:41 PM
