Latest Update: Work In Progress: Detailing (

Glad to join the challenge and look forward to some great work from all of you! For now, I'm just playing around with the idea of doing a large vista, but don't have any specific direction. To kick it off, here is my first color comp just to get the ideas started.

03 March 2008, 10:45 PM
Ha! You don't waste any time, do you Nathaniel?

I hope I can squeeze in an entry this time, too.

03 March 2008, 01:10 AM (

Here's another quick one. Just throwing out some ideas as I get a feel for where I'd like to take things.

03 March 2008, 03:18 AM
Wow, nice man!

I wish you luck in the challenge!!

03 March 2008, 05:51 AM
it looks really good, but i dont see any of the inter-species relationship themes yet.

03 March 2008, 08:51 AM
Great sketches Nathaniel !
Nice to see you around !

03 March 2008, 10:56 AM
seems impressive at the moment but will we see aliens there?

03 March 2008, 12:03 PM
keep em concepts rollin in, already looks interesting :)

03 March 2008, 02:30 PM
Wow, love the colors in the first one. You sure work quickly :)

03 March 2008, 04:20 PM
Thanks for the comments everyone! Yes, I will of course be putting an alien/human encounter in one corner or another undoubtedly. I'm planning on entering this piece as a matte painting, so I'm still playing with the background scene and the architecture. More to come soon...with some proper alien interaction in there for you!

03 March 2008, 06:11 PM
Great work with colors. I kinda like the 2nd consept better. Maybe you can try to put some of the space ships ifrom the 1st consept in to the 2nd? Either way, it looks beautiful. Good luck.

03 March 2008, 10:43 PM (

I've done another study that focuses more on the alien and human interaction, but still showing off the architecture that surrounds us. I'm liking this direction quite a bit at the moment, and thinking about painting up a ceremony of sorts. We'll see how it goes!

03 March 2008, 11:46 PM
I think the 2nd is the best too....i don' know why but this scene is especial

03 March 2008, 12:17 AM
Fascinating! :wip: I like your style. For me, the last one!

03 March 2008, 12:42 AM

Go for it. I think this one serve both goels. good luck.

Just to complicate things, I think Comp 3 makes for the most engaging image of the three at the moment. There's stronger and more interesting focus in that one, and it makes a stronger platform for the challenge theme, too.

Did I mention how frustrating it is to be competing against someone who has three appealing sketches done in the same time it took me to go into town and pick up a few of the books? ;)

03 March 2008, 01:26 AM
Not sure if it was intentional or not, but your most recent sketch gave me the feeling of a "Christ" figure in the middle. Could be an interesting idea to explore, how human ideas of religion would translate to other species. Seems like he's trying to put on a big spectacle for the spectators.

03 March 2008, 01:37 AM
looking good! Love your rough concepts goot luck mate

03 March 2008, 03:31 AM
Nice mood. Like where you're heading. Good luck

03 March 2008, 02:24 PM
Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I agree that this last one is working to show both interaction and architecture better than the first two. I'm going to keep developing these ideas further in this new direction.

ScottC-Thanks for the kind words, and good luck to you!

SFedor-Yes, I do see the religious aspect, and will do my best to explore those ideas. Thanks for your thoughts!

More to come soon!

03 March 2008, 02:32 PM
was thinking , if you plan to do a matte painting, do you have to go and take the
photos for it yourself, since they usually want you to make everything for the
challenge from scratch?

03 March 2008, 02:39 PM
Squibbit-That is a very good point. This may be a good exercise in photo taking as well! Thanks for your insight on that!

03 March 2008, 03:40 PM
great sketches. i would love to see more.

btw about that squabbit siad. very good point ill ask in the Q&A forum.

i found this in the Q&A nimbus posted. so i guess it is ok to use existing textures, but i am sure you would get extra points if you made your own assests for the project.

Q: While I know its ok to use 2D textures in this 3D it going to be ok to use a 2D element as a back drop? Like a a matte painting?

A: Yes. You should always use every tool that is apropriate in the best way possible.

03 March 2008, 03:54 PM
Mmm, I like the latest one, it has a sophisticated and mature look to it.

Good luck

03 March 2008, 04:41 PM
Slav-Thanks so much for hunting that down, and thanks for the update on that! I agree it would be good to use one's own photos...I might just try that!

BaronImpossible-Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts!

03 March 2008, 05:39 PM
Wow! Great stuff...fasinating. You have great skill. Love the value, color choice and composition. Inspiring, indeed.

03 March 2008, 06:09 PM (

I've worked this one up a bit more. I'm thinking of diving into this one, but want to explore the overall design of costumes and architecture before I go much further. I'm also exploring symbolic elements that I can add in to reinforce the story I'm attempting to tell with the image. We'll see what comes of it!

03 March 2008, 06:31 PM
Yep, that last one really does it for me. Best one by far and they're all good.

03 March 2008, 10:08 PM
ok, hmmm. I like where you're taking this idea, but this new update didn't do it for me. The top chopper-aircraft is hard to read, seems welded to the background building and makes the picture look too crowded. I'd keep one of the two, the chopper or the building, but not both. As for the Jesus guy, I liked it better when his chin was heading up, cause if he looks up, you look up.

I still love the mood and pallete :)
Keep up the good work!

03 March 2008, 11:16 PM (

I've been developing this further, refining the color scheme, and detailing the main figure a bit more. I've made her looking up towards the sky more, based on the previous comment, and adjusted the top right ship so that it separates from the background building. That had been bugging me for awhile too! Thanks for your comments!

03 March 2008, 12:24 AM
The previous colour version look so good for me... but this is nicer too :)

It's very cool see this WIP growing like an impressionist painting :)

03 March 2008, 12:37 AM
love the style of this!

03 March 2008, 01:55 PM
Fascinating! I'm curious where it will lead you :)

Good luck!

03 March 2008, 03:04 PM
going strong mate,nicely exercuted:)

03 March 2008, 04:38 PM (

I've begun working on the detailing of the main picture, and wanted to show it up close from beginning to end for all to see. I'm in the process of working on the sky as well, and will have an update on that as well.

03 March 2008, 05:16 PM
this is nice!

03 March 2008, 10:42 AM
Awesome start! I really dig ur sketching style, where everything is so rough and raw, but the viewer can see million things in there. Brush textures are something Im still learning and exploring :) Love the idea of depicting ceremony, maybe a wedding or something, between those two species. Keep up the good work, cant wait to see more :)

03 March 2008, 11:20 AM
Those colours are tremendous. Looks like you got them right first time, something I very rarely manage.

I have one small niggle, however; there's something bugging me about her arms. I thought at first they should be slightly longer but now I'm not too sure.

Maybe it's their angle. If you imagine she's standing against a wall then her right arm would make an angle of maybe 30 degrees whilst her left arm would be almost flat against the wall. Which is perfectly possible of course, but I think the non-symmetry could be what's bugging me.

Would it be improved by having her left arm coming towards us more, foreshortening it and getting rid of the effect where we see her left hand as side on? Don't know, just a thought :D

03 March 2008, 11:38 AM
Awesome concept! I like the colours and composition of it all.
I can't wait to see what your aliens are going to look like.

Good luck!

03 March 2008, 01:45 PM
wow, you're one friggin fast mofo!! ;D
Those sketches all look great, best of luck, this will surely be a sweet final!

03 March 2008, 03:22 PM
Nice concept ,, wish you good luck for this challenge ..
this is my first time i will definatly try for my best also ...!

Good luck matte! You showing kick ass style, love your progress

03 March 2008, 04:34 PM
Nice sketches. you give us a good atmosphere of your pict.

Good luck.

03 March 2008, 10:50 AM
Oh yeah, color choices very good indeed.

03 March 2008, 06:00 AM
I think you still can play with the composition, I think. Maybe try cropping the right side down a bit. Its still early in the process and I've seen you pull off amazing stuff, I will keep an eye on this thread. Welcome Nathan, you need no luck. Later.

03 March 2008, 01:51 PM
I love the whole atmosphere! Previous sketches were also brilliant. I can't wait to see it in full detail!
good luck man!

04 April 2008, 11:52 AM
Very atmospheric, and if you don't mind me saying it reminds me of Craig Mullins some what.

04 April 2008, 12:19 PM
Are you planning on making this 3d or painted style in 2d? After seeing your roughs, I'm kinda hoping you just continue to refine what you have and paint a matte painting. I think the rough big brush strokes you are currently using is supporting your imagery/theme nicely. I'm new to this site though and it seems 3d heavy, so i'm not sure if that effects the popularity of entries...

04 April 2008, 02:51 PM
I like the overall mood and the color palette...
Nice work, I'm looking forward to see evolutions.

04 April 2008, 09:47 AM
I was off due to some reasons, but i have made my mind up to continue on the "video category" on this challenge. Thus I gave up with the "image category". I wish i have time to complete both but schedule is tough and time gets short. I pray and hope i can produce a good video here.. Let's see anyway.

I have changed my signature link to show the video category entry!!

I try to keep an eye for your entry.:)
