Latest Update: Final Image: Sundiver Expedition (

03 March 2008, 03:33 AM

I did a little alien to test the Silo -> XSI pipeline :\
He's the type of doodle I used to sneak on the back of my school pads..
Not the style I'm planning to use hence not submitted to the contest.
Just trying to "break the ice" a little?

Thinking of a really basic concept to exercise my modeling skills and learn to take it all the way to a finished image. Due to self-admitted newbness I'm going for a really simple concept:

I want to create an image of a future scuba diving girl and an alien dolphin in uniform.
Don't know what Brin calls the alien Dolphin race yet.

But very simply a moment of contact between the human girl and the intelligent dolphin swimming together. There's a chance that I may be able to take something this simple to a real finish.

So "scuba girl and dolphin" to come.

03 March 2008, 12:56 PM (

Here's a first concept sketch. I don't know if the girl will have blonde hair waving underwater or if the colour scheme will stay. I want her to be almost sci-fi pinup quality and the dolphin to look hi-tech strange and alien. Of course a lucky fish as well. I somehow imagine volumetric alien lights since the pair should be near the surface. This based on the fact that both humans and neo-dolphins surface for water preety often, apparently.

03 March 2008, 10:24 AM (

Got a bit of a head start on Neo's base mesh. Just quickly sorting out dolphin topology and preparing for brushing away already.

I decided to diverge from the concept a little. Maybe dolphins, like humans, cannot open their mouth underwater without starting to drown.

They do come up for air preety often. So he's keeping his mouth shut.

03 March 2008, 12:40 AM (

Base mesh coming along. Laying out topology for a while still - until there's enough. Won't get too far with detail down the line since I'm planning to use more traditional maps, such as bump, albedo and specular rather than taking things into the millions of polys.

03 March 2008, 07:38 PM (

Trotting along.. is that an eye coming along I see..

03 March 2008, 08:11 AM (

Have been learning the XSI rendertree and also sorting a workflow for the modeler.
Looking at options like Albedo, specular, bump and displacement. Here's a test render for the neo-dolphin's eye. Not important since it should end up pretty small scale in a larger picture. No maps here.

03 March 2008, 11:00 AM

I've been trying to find out how far I can take the poly count on this old worstation.
Here's a million polys test render, looks like the gigapolygon core is really holding.
More progress on the dolphin soon, here's something on the meantime.

Back to the brush for now.

03 March 2008, 05:03 PM (

Almost done with the neo dolphin's head.
Here's a view.

03 March 2008, 06:25 PM (

Toned down some of the detail.

04 April 2008, 12:06 PM (

Found some more time for working on Flip's head. He's almost done I'll post some more views sometime. Also have to move on soon.

04 April 2008, 04:21 PM (

Here's the different views of the base mesh for the dolphin's head.

04 April 2008, 06:40 PM (

Test render with a Lambert material.

04 April 2008, 08:47 AM
Um, no comments?

Hopefully the dolphin isn't that ugly?
Heck, more to come soon anyway, body has to be next and then the props.
Then the mapping I think, also the concept might change soon.

This deadline is becoming pretty tight already, and I'll be on my own, looks like?

04 April 2008, 12:28 AM (

Some girl company for the neo dolphin

04 April 2008, 02:44 PM (

Started on the head for the female figure. Using an old base mesh and many changes to go. Plus her features will be re-done with brushes.

04 April 2008, 04:57 PM
Dude, that dolphin is looking fantastic, can't wait to see how the girl turns out.

04 April 2008, 05:36 PM (

I think I'm happy with her base now. Brushes to go and she's getting her body soon. Um in the future make-up is all waterproof and she's not wearing the mask cause she's near the surface. Or she might even lose her sex appeal.

04 April 2008, 05:40 PM
@ brandonstarr

Thanks Brandon she'll be coming along I hope. Glad you like the dolphin.
I want her to be a really hot pin-up type. Hope I pull it off.
They both got a lot of details to go but I want to have the bases so I can pose them for a better composition. Also have a better and more final concept to present.

04 April 2008, 11:22 PM (

A tiny more progress on the girl.

04 April 2008, 12:32 AM (

Her torso coming along.

04 April 2008, 07:48 PM (

I think I got the base for the torso done. Of course she'll get clothes but I want them tight so kept looking at anatomy.

04 April 2008, 05:14 PM (

Testing shaders for the underwater scene. Using a simple sphere models test later. And back modeling soon.

04 April 2008, 08:55 PM (

Testing different elements with the tree and getting different results. I think volumetric lights will be on.

04 April 2008, 03:34 AM
Hey this is coming along really well  The volumetric underwater lighting is also looking very effective. I think your dolphin is looking fantastic. I'm wondering about its eye though - in your last update to show the dolphin the lower part of the eye seemed a little bit too open. Keep up the great work

04 April 2008, 09:13 AM
@ mdavid

Thanks that's really nice coming from you  I get embarassed when I look at the first ugly visualisation I did lol but please bear in mind that it took about 1/2 hour. Also it was drawn with my arcane tablet on a very small scale and just a concept.

I'll keep in mind the dolphin lower lid when I get back to him. Have been looking at quite a bit of reference that got dug up. As for the ocean tests the thing I figure needs most work is the reflectivity on the water surface. I need to figure a way of really bumping that up it's kind of dull at the moment. It's got to get shiny hey like otherwise no deal. And then there's caustics.

And it's going to be quite a race for me to finish, I don't know if there'll be time for a nice render caustics and all. So it's back to finishing anatomy, designing some futuristic garments and posing. I'll get more relaxed then *cross fingers* :argh:

04 April 2008, 02:30 AM (

So I imagine them in fishnet stockings. My reference was pretty thin which doesn't make her bad looking at all imho. I think the base legs are done for now.

04 April 2008, 09:55 PM (

Her hands coming along. Topology has also been a concern at this stage. I'll post the wires when she's done.

04 April 2008, 01:39 AM
Hey Spin, cool concept. Like your underwater environment, nice :D The models are comming really well. Like a lot the dolphins, really great! Good luck and looking forward for more updates! Cheers mate!

04 April 2008, 02:49 PM (

The hands. I've learnt some new topology with them since I have definitely overdone hands in the past to the point where form got compromised. So new hand base.

04 April 2008, 02:51 PM
Ferx thanks :buttrock:
I just wish I had a lot of time so I could put more "bling" on the water surface.
Might still try but don't know how far I can get.
Also caustics I couldn't bring them into the equation yet and don't know if they'll make the final entry.

04 April 2008, 05:00 PM (

Hands after refining.

04 April 2008, 06:20 PM (

She just had a major op. Her arms got lifted no rigs yet. Looking like she'll make it :)

04 April 2008, 01:31 AM (

New bust.

04 April 2008, 11:55 AM
This is coming along great, the underwater coloring and lighting test looks good :)

04 April 2008, 03:28 PM

I admit water tests look good. I never did anything similar to this, but I say it's convincing. Woman model also looks nice, but you can give her that extra curves so she looks more attractive  I'm waiting to see her posed.

04 April 2008, 05:05 PM
@ Ivy00

Thanks Linda, I'm really set to get this image somewhere see how it goes.

Glad you like the water. I don't know if there'll be time to fiddle with it much more.
I've had full time, so got to finish this, got to finish this.. lol

@ grooshka

Grooshka thanks. As for the girl, I even enjoy doing different meshes and different people will have different anatomy I suppose. So the reference girl I used was really thin and I'd gladly get into making her more Stahlberg'esque :) Problem is I don't think there's much time. I even like women that thin so maybe she won't change that much. Next mesh maybe ;)

I love your piece it looks like you're quite comfortable with ZBrush. I've only tried it and at the moment working with Silo which now also has brushes. It's nice the way you can work on topology and switch to brushes as you go. But ultimately I think I'll have to look at something like MudBox do do some real sculpting. Also probably staying realatively low-res even though I worked out how to render displacement in XSI.

So I got her almost done this weekend, will have to start rigging soon. Then finish the dolphin and rig him too. Then come up with a final composition which should be done already (3 weeks to go?) Then there's clothes, texturing, shading blah blah

I've been thinking of taking today off but maybe I'll be back later looks like..

04 April 2008, 05:48 PM (

She keeps coming together.
Probably spend some time trying to improve topology on the low poly base.

04 April 2008, 04:52 AM (

I think the anatomy base is about done. Here's some shots including wires. Of course she'll be wearing clothes. So if it looks funny at this stage (nude wearing flippers anyone) or even kinky by any chance :) please take into account this is a w-i-p. It's just that I really want to start posing her and clothes are not the priority right now.

P.S. I thought I could post a turnaround at this stage, but am not too sure. She's only about 20000 polys. The plan is to take things much further using displacement. Maybe then she'll deserve a turnaround? On the other hand time is running out and I don't know if I'll get there. So I'll go think about doing a turnaround sometime.

04 April 2008, 04:48 PM (

Trying to come up with a rigging strategy.. laughs aside. She's almost a nice biped except for a few little things that seem to elude me at this stage.

Like the fact her knees keep bending forward. Ok it says W-I-P. I'll pose her when I'm there.

04 April 2008, 06:12 PM (

Scuba girl makes her first swimming attempts. Please note I'm only working on the rig at this stage. She has no texturing and I haven't spent any time shading. Just want to get the rig done so I can pose her properly and have her neo-dolphin friend join up so I can work out a composition.

Her legs started bending backward *phew*

04 April 2008, 11:34 PM
*blah* *blah* *blah*

04 April 2008, 07:46 AM (

Actually not rigging just adjusting envelope weights at the moment. Also using the synoptic views to keep improving rigging. Almost there. Note only using the 20000 polys base.

Her legs still bending "backward" the way legs usually bend?

04 April 2008, 07:52 AM
Somehow her fingers keep looking too thin. Low poly base looks fine though.
No clues. Only posing anyway.

04 April 2008, 05:01 PM (

After a bit of twisting and wrangling I think I got some of the worse deformations sorted. So I can stop fiddling with weights now. Besides the rig only needs to be adjusted for the one pose in the end. So moving on next.

I still can't get over the chest and belly movement with biped. What about about the hips. Woo Hoo.

04 April 2008, 08:31 PM (

Checking human dolphin proportions and preparing for some low poly dolphin rigging.

04 April 2008, 05:31 AM
-- Image Deleted: Ughhh! --

At this stage a couple of things come to mind. First I'm really not sure about my dolphin rigging skills. Secondly not sure rigs help so much with posing figures. But I'm getting pretty sure there's going to be a lot of work to do even after storing final poses. Except for the biped rig which is really amazing.

Also things really look bad at this stage. I think textures really have to be started. And the sci-fi clothes. But I really want to work out a composition before that. So please bear with me. And my bad matte painting :)

04 April 2008, 06:34 AM
Definitely been a learning experience. Have a lot more exciting ideas for posing and the final composition. Also have to fix my workflow definitely have to UV map before finalising any poses. Then I'll start texturing on the posed figures. And finally try paint some more displacement. Don't know if I'll get very high-res. then it's on to the final render.

And there's 2 weeks to go soon *tick* *tick*

04 April 2008, 07:24 AM (

Ok I couldn't leave it so here's something I'm beginning to get happy with. Both scuba girl and the neo dolphin surface for air. I think diagonals and a low camera angle will work. Of course I'm not even using the dolphin rig. It just gives me the idea of the pose I'll need.

Oh of course it looks bad I'm using the low poly models. Just studying posing and composition at this stage.

On to UV mapping everything.

04 April 2008, 06:54 PM (

I don't wanna see rigs for a while :D

So time to work on her gear and map. Then I'll try use gator to get her pose. After that modeling and texturing and maybe some displacement.

04 April 2008, 10:37 PM (

I think she'll be wearing some sort of future scuba harness.

04 April 2008, 01:01 AM (

I think I've reached a composition for the final image. Also know what poses I'll be going for. Tried to do something about the awful test renders lol

Um textures keep coming to mind..

04 April 2008, 10:06 PM (

Looking at the pose I got scuba girl in it becomes evident there'll be quite a bit of work to do still. Rigging with biped really helped but wouldn't expect it to predict human muscles so much.

And this is only the base model. So I've got to figure how to get the final model in pose sometime as well.
I think I'll have to rig the higher poly model, something I wasn't planning for :(

Beginning to wonder if there's going to be time for this?
I'm keeping the PS paintover option in hand since haven't even mapped her yet.

04 April 2008, 01:53 AM (

Having a sci-fi fit. Do I keep it I wonder. Or maybe she's not wearing it..

04 April 2008, 02:56 AM
Hey Spin, really great work on the girl rig, and cool design for the scuba helmet, nice sci-fi touch on it  Like your composition and when you rig the dolphin yo can gain a nice curves for your composition. Maybe the girl swimming more from up to down and curving the body on "U" shape, only a comment :) Again really great work! Cheers mate!!

04 April 2008, 05:34 AM
Thanks Ferx appreciate it.
I think I'll be going sci-fi for a while, so much for seeing her preety face.
Not giving her body armor or anything, after all it's only futuristic scuba gear.

Dolphin must get his diving suit as well.

As for the composition, I don't really want to change her pose cause maybe you didn't notice but she's grabbing on to the dolphin flipper to come to the surface. Dolphin already posed I've had it with rigs telling yah.

Cheers

PS-- but yes the dolphin is all crumpled because of the rig. I want to model his pose so that doesn't happen. Rig not helphing much there but I gave it the twists I wanted so that I can model him into that position. But have to get there first..

04 April 2008, 06:30 AM (

Scuba gear coming along.

04 April 2008, 04:39 AM (

The least fun part. Covering her up.
Space thong anyone?
More to follow. I'll panic next week, for now I'll be spending time doing her scuba suit.

04 April 2008, 05:22 AM
Hello J.C.,
Everything looks great so far. I really like the modelling on the woman. Time is a ticken but you can do it. The best inspiration comes under pressure. Great work. Brad

04 April 2008, 01:13 AM
Looks like I'm locked out of the office so no updates today.
Of course I have lots of time..

Welcome to stay tuned, see how far I can take this.

04 April 2008, 04:16 AM (

Ended up taking so much time on her suit. I hope it's paying off. So a scuba diver from some alternate future maybe. And she's really close to done I like to think.

Comments welcome.

04 April 2008, 05:33 AM
Hey J.C,

The girls diving outfit looks great. Keep up the good fight man. Brad

04 April 2008, 04:23 AM
Looks like I can't submit entries this side for over an hour now.

At the moment it looks like all links to are down.
I think CGSociety is currently having hosting problems.

Any case patiently waiting to post new updates.

@ Brad

Thanks for the nice comment :)
That was encouraging since I haven't really tried making sci-fi stuff almost since I was a teen.
But having fun anyway. Cheers.

04 April 2008, 06:54 AM (

I'm not sure if she's keeping her swimming helmet on or not.

04 April 2008, 08:10 AM (

Here's some details of what I've been doing lately. I've shelled out the harness and added volume to all the uniform parts that were in 2D.

05 May 2008, 06:27 AM (

Quite happy with the way she ended up fitting in a bikini :\

05 May 2008, 08:10 AM
Hi J.C. Coelho!

Don't know but by the look of it you read the books or at least "Maré alta estelar" so what I'll say isn't exactly new... the dolphins used some kind of armor, from wich the arms came out, or the welding devices or... it was linked to them with a neural implant.

Good luck and keep up!
Força aí!

05 May 2008, 12:47 PM
Oi Joaquim,

Thanks for the encouragement.
Nah I didn't get round to reading any Brin books yet but am glad somebody that has is posting here :)

I'm more knowing of works by people like Moebius and Bilal (imagery) and am trying to pick up on his book series. Thanks for the quote. Can I ask if there's any descriptions on scuba divers or the dolphins themselves, wanted to know if they have any alien lights?

I got the implant bit thanks a lot.

05 May 2008, 05:01 AM (

And now she really is just about done and ready to map. And time keeps running out of course..

05 May 2008, 09:15 AM
Viva J.C. Coelho!

In the mentioned book there are several references to scuba equipment for humans and dolphins. Specially because they travel aboard a spaceship that's most of the time full of water so the dolphins can swim... otherwise they use some mechanical device like a baby's "andarilho" to move on land...

Alien lights??? What do you mean with that? If you want I can try and read diagonally this weekend some chapters and post the authors written image of all those devices...

Be cool
Be well

05 May 2008, 10:54 AM
Thanks DMacb

It's ok really I don't think there's much time anyway.
But your few lines are helping already.
I looked a lot at Jim Burn's illustration and otherwise just let my imagination go.

I guess I'll really want to read up on Brin's books sometime.
Until then I really want to get some sort of finished image to submit to the challenge.

PS-- By alien lights I was referring to some really nice light effects some people in this forum seem to using with neo dolphins. But then I don't think there'll be much time for rendering anyway. Tudo bem.

05 May 2008, 07:27 AM (

Ok a little last brushing and helmet detailing. And now I really have to stop working on her (and she's sooo behind schedule) and get on with mapping.

Scuba Girl modeling staying like this for the entry, and I'll be hoping to make one.

John Keates
05 May 2008, 09:50 PM
Nice work, I am looking forward to seeing them both together and rendered.

05 May 2008, 05:36 AM (

And so she slowly gets mapped as I get used to Silo's live unwrap feature. Among other things. Like pinning vertices. That's when she stopped giving me the big finger. And there's about a week to go. And the other model to finish.

Ok I'll go have a panic attack now.

05 May 2008, 05:45 AM
Ok her legs were a little skew. Fixed.
Now for the gear..

@ John Keates

Thanks John. I also want to get to the render but keep doubting it'll really happen before
the deadline. Can always finish later except for the free edition of XSI academic

05 May 2008, 12:37 PM (

Eventually got around to fully mapping her and ready for posing next.

05 May 2008, 01:37 PM
cool design! the girl mask is very interesting.I like a lot dolphing model too.

05 May 2008, 05:41 PM
Thanks Fabio it's all becoming a bit of a technical nightmare for me at this stage :argh:

The Silo -> XSI pipeline is giving me the creeps right now (among other things?)
I hope there's time to sort things and make a final image with one week to go.
Best of luck to you.

05 May 2008, 06:00 PM
I really wanted to do some of my image with XSI, but being a 100% beginner to 3d I think it would take me longer than the amount of time we had to get anywhere with the program. This is coming along great, I hope you get time to finish it.

05 May 2008, 09:10 PM
Dolphin & girl gook work!. Especially, girls body & Goggle is Pungently!! Keep it up!

05 May 2008, 10:28 PM
Nice, UV's are well developed. i'm impatient de see texturs on this model.

05 May 2008, 11:21 PM (

A test render after importing into XSI. She got merged into emdl format and tidied her materials.

No shading work yet materials are straight imports from the modeling application (Silo)

05 May 2008, 11:29 PM
@ Ivy00

Linda thanks. I've only been doing modeling in 3D for a while and this is supposed to be my most finished image. Have been learning XSI during the competition (steeeeeep!!). Hope I get there on time :buttrock:

@ kobatune

Tuneyoshi glad you like. Not going very high poly on this, hope it still works. I'll be trying to keep it up! :)

@ DaVee

I want to paint the dolphin (if I get there) but there's no time so I'll try get away with as many shaders as possible. Maybe after trying to submit a somewhat final entry. Thanks.

05 May 2008, 03:14 AM
Hey Spin, she is looking really great. I like the helmet, cool futuristic touch. Maybe you can add a glowing texture for the visor part :) The bikini looks really sexy ! great!! :D ( That dolphin have a lot of luck :D) Come on , we are in the last lap ! :D Great work my friend! Cheers! ( I think in this step of the challenge is not good idea the beer smilie hahahaha :D)

05 May 2008, 02:58 PM
@ Ferx

Thanks Ferx. I've also thought of glowing underwater lights in her helmet and things.
And then I realise that I'm lucky if I get the whole weekend to render away.
So I really don't know. True beer not going to speed anything up lol.
Maybe just a little wine then?

Glad you like it :surprised

05 May 2008, 02:58 PM (

Dunno about the direction the dolphin suit is taking.. see where it ends up. Hopefully not the trash bin.

05 May 2008, 03:25 PM (

Do I put scuba girl on the dolphin saddle I wonder..

05 May 2008, 04:40 PM (

And so a saddle comes along.

05 May 2008, 07:26 AM
Hey Spin, the outfit for the dolphin looks awesome, nice addition for the concept, great sci-fi touch on it! Cheers mate!!

05 May 2008, 07:26 AM (

And the modeling is almost done.
A little more details and some topology improvements to go.
Hoping to get him mapped soon.

05 May 2008, 07:43 AM
@ Ferx

Thanks mate. Glad the beer is back. If we miss this at least we'll be jolly.
I really don't know if my machne can render that fast but it was looking promising.

First I picture the girl riding the dolphin silently into the deep.
Then the story could go something like..

--And that planetary day they sent the human and the neo dolphin to investigate the huge wreck they once called the Titanic.

Ok I need a plot as well. It figures.

05 May 2008, 11:22 PM (

And that's the modelling done for the neo-dolphin. Lost a bit of res on the head that I might bring back later using displacement. Then again it might not be needed.

He's going mapping now.

05 May 2008, 03:42 PM (

And so the neo-dolphin gets mapped.

05 May 2008, 06:53 PM
Hello Borges, I can see you done alot of work in here. Its good to see you put so much thought to your creations. I think the dolphin is my favorite, I like his body suit. Keep at it mate not much time left now!

05 May 2008, 07:56 PM
Hey Ryannnn :buttrock:

Thanks and your entry looking awesome btw.
It's even encouraging me to go paint textures now.
Damn the checkered renders are ugly, never mind those.

So I've been going crazy with XSI trying to rig the high poly finished models and pulling the little hair I have left. THEN! I realise that the GATOR thing does magic spells too :surprised
So I realise that after posing my low poly rig I can transfer the whole pose to the finished model WITHOUT rigging it! So there you go I'll be posing away for a while and getting in a serious tangle with the awesome complexity of this whole XSI paradigm thing while drinking wine and trying not to fall off the chair..

Kudos to the SoftImage developers they really got some magic software going..

05 May 2008, 08:51 PM (

And so she slowly climbs on the saddle..

05 May 2008, 09:00 PM
It's not the Inverse Kinematics so much, it's the FORWARD ones..
Any case she'll get there. By tomorrow probably. Nevertheless.
Oh and she really likes the saddle by the way.

You should see what she does with the rotation handle..

05 May 2008, 10:12 PM (

A couple of simple poses.
I'll later transfer and brush up on the final model.

Do I make her point or is it rude.
Or should she just rest both hands on the saddle?

Should she put a hand up defensively or trying to concentrate on something?

I think I'll sleep on it.

05 May 2008, 09:48 AM (

I think I found the final pose.
So she looks into the deep. Her hand reaches out. Is she concentrating on something. Is it self defense is she trying to point is she swimming to keep balance.

I think both hands in the saddle would be boring and very hard work. And so on to posing the final figure.

05 May 2008, 11:12 AM (

And the pose I got out using GATOR.
Actually very impressed.
Now back to the modeling brushes..

05 May 2008, 11:15 AM
I'm beginning to wonder how far I'll be able to take this.
I wonder what will be considered elligible as a final entry?
Would an ambient occlusion pass at the desired resolution do it?

I can always finish the image later.
Just wondering cause I really don't know how I'll meet this deadline.
Hey it's been fun learning XSI..

05 May 2008, 09:22 PM (

So after posing it's been almost like starting over except a lot is already done. I didn't rig her hands well so they've been a lot of work got reposed and sculpted on.

I don't think there's much time but rather sculpt something I like than render something that I don't.

I had to redo her hands first. Am completely redoing her bikini (forced to) and then her arms and leg joints her back buttocks hips upper legs and belly.

It's been a bit of work. So today I should finish her pose and setup displacement for the dolphin since I'm stuck with low poly uv's in Silo.

Then I'm hoping to have 2 days(?) for rendering and a little texturing.
Not sure it's going to happen but definitely giving it a good try :\

J.C. great modeller,
I am anxious to see the final design.

vamos lá! falta pouco tempo!
keep going!

Done with most brushing.
Even if I wanted time is up so that's that. Little more tweaking and she's joining her neo-dolphin friend.

05 May 2008, 10:40 PM
woman is well done now. You should hurry to finish in time,(like me in fact). keep it up.

05 May 2008, 01:56 AM (

Ok she passed the first test render.
Of course there's shading and texturing work to go. Time ticking too.

Well she's mapped posed and brushed as far as time let me and pretty late even.
Rather late than never?

Loving your work. I love the bike and the girl.
True there's so little time let's just try see how finished we can get.
Not much hope in doing a lot of texture work or rendering tests.

Vamos carinha!

Yep let's see how finished finished is going to have to be.

Allez allez allez il faut finir!

Hi there Spin99,

Progress going nice, but where are your final textures and shaders? You didn't show as these... The pose looks fine and this helmet stuff is really a nice concept.

Are you going to make it? Hope so. Keep going!

PS About my scene - as soon as I realized I won't finish everything in 3d I rendered my final image and began working in Pshop with details. Maybe you should also?
God bless 2d/3d category fusion! :D

05 May 2008, 02:13 PM (

After much sweating managed to bake the high-res dolphin head I started with into the scene. I used the excellent BenR binder shader

After this I found out I can render at 1/2 print res on my lowly machine in a couple of minutes so far. This should leave a little time to work on things.

So the composition has to be worked out very very soon. Coming up next.

God bless 2d/3d category fusion! :DHi Grooshka. Very good question huh? lol
Glad you like my concept.

So let's hope I'm going to make it.
I've already mapped everything so don't see why I should go paint over when I can paint on at this stage, time or no time. But I have to get there still.
So it'll be my chance to find out how fast I can paint textures lol :buttrock:

05 May 2008, 03:48 PM (

I think I'll go with a very simple composition. Excuse the poor lighting I'm only using the headlight at this stage.

And I think lighting is next.

Looking forward to seeingthis one finished. Been seeing your posts over at XSI Base and the Silo forums.
You've done well learning XSI in such a short time.

Some underwater surface tests. Chances are things won't change much since time is running out.

I'm using Joshua Chang's Lume shaders package for XSI. There's also some very useful tutorials including setting up a water surface at the tutorial portal

SimonThanks sbmongoose. It's been pretty steep i must admit. I'll probably keep working on things past the deadline but will submit something on time anyway.

Setup standard 3-point lighting for the scene.

Hi J.C. Coelho!

I've been out a few time and you managed to make some really big improvements on your scene! I can almost imagine that I'm seeing one of the scenes I read about! Good work and good luck to you!

There really isn't much time left so I don't think I'll update in a while.
I've been playing with a lot of lighting and am finally getting happy with it.
Texturing work time.

Not that my hopes are that high at all but I want to present something that looks finished.

This is becoming a marathon to the finish..

05 May 2008, 11:39 PM (

I was going to stop spamming but here's a test render with the current lighting. Texturing and shading work to go.

05 May 2008, 04:31 AM (

I spent a lot of time doing the shading to reach the inevitable conclusion.
There's no escaping texturing, starting on the dolphin.

So this last day should be just for that.

05 May 2008, 05:20 PM (

Ok Flip got mostly textured.
Couple obvious seam problems that you might even not notice(um) unless you look for them. After that he should be ok.

Must admit this definitely isn't my favorite part of the process.
But ok it makes a difference.

So trying to wrap this image up pretty bad at this stage.

05 May 2008, 06:34 PM
Just wanted to blog a little and say this has been a great humbling and learning experience for me. It's the first time I try take an image to some sort of finally rendered stage.
So far I'd only done a bit of modeling here and there and trying to put it all together for this competition.

Must admit that I only did what I thought I might be able to finish, and signed up ready to learn. So it really wasn't ever much more than 2 sci-fi characters that could perhaps fit with the world of Brin. Now I really want to go read some of his books as well.

Would definitely be more ambitious should the opportunity to enter a competition like this come by again, and should be able to pace things a lot better. I didn't even try come up with a good idea this time. A lot of what got posted here was brand new to me, never had even textured any models before. Definitely something to work on.

Hope my newbness doesn't show too much since it's been really exciting browsing to this forum for the past two months and trying to get this entry going.
I really love this society and hope that someday I might be able to give just a little more to what is the most exciting place on the net imho:bowdown:

05 May 2008, 08:42 PM (

Ok final test render.
Maybe I need to get rid of the shadow on the bottome right. And maybe depth of field would make it look a little better.

If there's any comments please speaketh now or forever hold your silence.
Final to follow.

Dude, I just found your question in my image entry. I am not checking it since I am working on video only. About the wires - It is just screencapture with some layer transition applied to it. It is not antialiased at all, maybe the JPG compression make it to look like :) So what I have is just flat shaded mesh with visible mesh lines, then I just overlay it on phong shaded mesh in photoshop. Nothing special.

Nice entry btw. Hope you finish this on time :wip:

Scuba Girl and Flip take part in the "Sundiver expedition" and dive into the mysterious alien ocean to do research.

05 May 2008, 12:08 AM
Hi Juraj thanks for the reply.
It looks antialiased on your page just wondering if there's a new trick to learn.
I heard there is one btw just overlooked it at the time.

Any case Photoshop layering blending options phong render.. check!
Next time I'll try. I think this competition was just nice practice for the next one.
And it's over! Phew!

Hey video is where it's at? Good luck to you.

05 May 2008, 06:27 AM
Hey Spin, nice image my friend!! Like a lot the enviroment on it, a cool and strange sea, the green and purple tones put an amazing atmosphere :D nice!! You make a great work, really great dolphin and dolphin suit design. Cool futuristic touch on the whole design of your characters. A pleasure to share this challenge with you and hope to meet on the next one! And now.... yeeessss!!! time for the well deserved cold beer!! and a big big tequila bottle!! Cheers my friend!!

Congratulations J.C.! Very strong finish. I dig your dolphins body suit. Looks like we both finished. Free XSI. Hell yeah!
