03-20-2008, 05:56 PM
Wow, nice to see you all around. Thanks for the warm welcome. :)

These challenges here are really great. Looking forward to see your entries.

Let the fun begin. :arteest:

So here's the first concept.

Intergalactic Joint Venture.

Shortly after first contact Jason and Kiatube teamed up to realize the idea of opening a bar at the new space port. With the combined power of their two construction companies it didn't take long till the bar starts to take shape.

03-22-2008, 03:55 PM
Good concept! Good luck for the chalange!

03-24-2008, 09:33 AM
Thanks MiGa, I am glad you like the concept.

03-24-2008, 09:37 AM

So I decided to stay with that concept. It may be not as fancy as usual, but I like it.

Here is a first modeling WIP of the mobile Holo-Unit.

C&C are welcome.

03-24-2008, 11:11 AM
Excellent. This concept is brilliant for your way of producing intriguing and believable machines and structures. I'm sure this is going to look great.

The holo-unit is really cool

03-24-2008, 11:41 AM
cool stuff dude :)

03-25-2008, 08:13 PM
Mark, Panu: Thanks a lot.

I really hope that I will find the time to do the texturing and lighting better this time.

Ok, here's a first WIP of the glider.

03-25-2008, 09:42 PM
That's one amazing piece of machinery. It looks fantastic. The only thing I can recommend is some kind of small window in the floor of the cabin, so the driver can still see the load once it is lowered below a certain height

03-26-2008, 03:40 AM
Hey Torsten, cool concept and you are working hard :), I love the models, really great detail and design on the holo unit and the glider (agree with Mark about window, perhaps a bubble window), Again, really awesome my friend  Looking forward for more updates!! Cheers !!

Ok, here's a first WIP of the glider.

i like this machine! Looks like a CAT products.
How you think for the colors? Yellow and black with a little bit of white?

03-26-2008, 04:25 PM
Mark: Thank you very much. Your are right about that window. I have already changed it.

Fernando: Thanks buddy, I am waiting for you to enter :scream:

Gianluca: Thanks, I already have some reference material for a CAT 966H wheel loader, which is next on the to do list. So there might be a good chance the colors will be yellow with some black and white. :D

Just a small update this time. Added a window and some interior in the cockpit.

03-26-2008, 11:29 PM
WOW that's pretty cool.
One thing that would really take it to the super sci fi relm is to make the cabin about 1/4 the size. It would make that glider seem huge.
Go for the epic!

03-27-2008, 12:01 AM
That looks really good. When I look at your machines and transport creations I feel like a kid seeing stuff for the first time, because you manage to combine a lot of originality with the sort of engineering sense that makes stuff look so right and logical. That's a real talent and I admire that

03-27-2008, 09:37 AM
Kory: Thank you very much. That's a very interesting idea. I would have to change some things which would be out of scale (lamps etc.) but it could work.

Mark: Thank you very much for your kind words.

03-27-2008, 01:05 PM
watching this for sure........... keep going

03-31-2008, 05:41 PM
pretty impressive stuff... what can i say. i love the modelling. cant wait to see your final crop.

03-31-2008, 07:16 PM
me totally agree man! love the modeling work a lot!! very imaginative! :p
good luck dude! you rock! :buttrock:

03-31-2008, 07:26 PM
your glider looks really great .. are you planning to add some more guns or something like that ? ... keep the great work

04-01-2008, 01:27 PM
Tony, Slav, Neville: Thank you very much.

John: Thanks man. There will be no guns in my entry. It's just a peaceful construction area. No need to attack or defense.

04-01-2008, 01:37 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/20/14240/14240_1207057028_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/20/14240/14240_1207057028_large.jpg)

So , I have changed plans a little bit. After Kory's feedback I first thought about scaling up the glider. But than I recognized that the design wouldn't really fit to such a huge machine. I would have to change far to much. So I decided to model another vehicle. This time a transporter which delivers all the needed concrete parts. The small gliders than take these parts to the final position.
I will skip the wheel loader due to the limited time and will now start to do the construction area and all the small parts. After that I will have no more excuses to delay the start of the modeling of the characters, which will be the hardest part for me to do.

Thanks once again for your wonderful support.

04-02-2008, 04:41 AM
Wow! That looks fantastic. Really nice design

04-02-2008, 05:42 AM
amazing work mate keep going

Mark, Tony: Thank you very much.

I have started to model the construction area. It will be kept quite simply. I am thinking of a desert like landscape where I may add some bushes.

04-04-2008, 05:04 PM
You are the master of machines Thorsten. I remember your buggy from the Strange Behavior Challenge was great too. Good luck! :D

04-07-2008, 12:05 AM
Hi, Torsten. Good to see you here again. You've got some great stuff going on and I'm watching. All the best!

04-07-2008, 07:53 AM
I'm very much looking forward to seeing this come together. As Vatrobot said, you're the master of machines. The only thought I can offer is about the composition. At the moment it appears (to me, anyway) to be divided into 4 quarters, without any particular quarter having more prominence. I know that will change when the key characters are put in the foreground, but perhaps the angle of the flying craft could change slightly to add a bit of variation/interest. I'm guessing a bit of distance haze will also show off the size of main flying craft, and that will obviously enhance the sense of depth and scale in the scene.

But like I said, your designs and machines are a real joy to look at and marvel over. I'm always watching out for your updates

04-08-2008, 07:02 AM
Vatroslav, Paul: Thank you very much.

Mark: Thanks, I may change camera angle and the position of the flying craft when everything is in the scene. distance haze is also on my schedule and the scale will be more obvious as soon as I put in some humans and aliens plus the small stuff like the load from the transporter. Anyway thank you very much for your support it's always much appreciated.

And here's the head.

Here's a WIP of the human worker.

I will now start to make the UV layout for all the models and than start the texturing. If there is still some time left, I will revise the characters as I am not 100% satisfied with the results so far, but time is slipping through my fingers at the moment.

04-12-2008, 09:08 PM
Torsten, you have done a great job. Good luck with your concept.

04-14-2008, 01:03 PM
Yep, that alien sure looks alien. Great work buddy. Those little spiny things on the back of its head are superb

04-17-2008, 04:22 PM
Hi Torsten,

nice concept, really original, and the beginning of the modeling is really cool!
My only crits about the worker, just for me but it seems that the hand are a little too small... i dunno... anyway good luck for challenge!!

04-18-2008, 10:40 PM
Hey Torsten, cool my friend !! love it the design on your alien, nice!! :D and the landscape for your image is looking really good, great!! Keep the great work my friend!! Cheers!!

04-20-2008, 05:38 PM
Robby: Thank you very much. Looking forward to see your entry.

Mark: Thanks, buddy.

Simone: Thanks for your comment. I will take a look at his hands once more.

Fernando: Thank you very much. Nice to see you here my friend.

Unfortunately I am running out of time. I don't have any time during the week to work on my entry and only a few hours during weekend. So I won't be able to finish my entry in the way I had it in mind when it all begins. But I will definitely submit a "final" version and I really hope it will be sufficient for getting me this non commercial XSI licence.
I will keep on working on this image but first I want to finish I project I put on hold for this challenge.

Thanks again for your support.

Here's a textured version of the glider. I Won't be able to a more realistic one, maybe I can improve it later in Photoshop a bit.

04-23-2008, 01:03 PM
Wow! That looks fantastic. Excellent work! No crits from me - it looks totally believable

04-23-2008, 09:24 PM
Hey Torsten, really ompresive my friend, you have a incredible touch for machine designs, wooooow and that is superb!! LOve the lighting on it, great!! Maybe some scratches and rusted and dirty material textures on it, but is a minor detail :D Again, awesome design and render my friend!! Cheers !!

04-24-2008, 07:19 PM
Mark: Once more. Thank you very much. When ever I will come to Australia I owe you a beer or two.

Fernando: Thanks man. Same to you. Mexico is on our travelling list. :scream:
I have to add Scratches, rust etc. later in PS when time will allow so. I don't have the time to do a proper UV layout right now.

Here is the construction desk with some textures. This is at 50% resolution. The glider was at 100% (when you click on the image).

04-24-2008, 07:36 PM
I like all the details you are putting into it. Looks really well constructed! Well done! Looking forward to see another upadte with everything together

04-26-2008, 07:50 PM
Michael: Thanks a lot man. I am still waiting for your models to show up.

Here's a WIP of the transporter. The light is a little bright. But I don't have time to waste with re-render :D.

Again, this is at 50% of the final resolution.

04-27-2008, 07:44 PM
Hi Torsten, your transporter is fantastic, good work!!

04-30-2008, 11:42 PM
Hey Torsten, your image is looking really great! The construction desk is cool my friend and like all the details on it  Like a lot the yellow colour on the transporter ship, really clever and nice touch! Great work !! Cheers my friend!

05-02-2008, 02:24 AM
I remember when I was young and the first Star Wars movie was released. And I sat in my cinema chair and loved seeing the amazing spaceships and machinery and technology from another time/place. That's pretty much how I feel when I see your updates. I love the new stuff - it's imaginative but also believable. It is as logical as it is fresh and beautiful. You do it really well. Definitely no crits from me

05-07-2008, 12:30 PM
Robby: Thank you very much. Nice to see you finished your first challenge here on CGTalk. Hope to see you in the next one as well.

Fernando: Thanks buddy. Hurry up with you entry. I want to see it final.

Mark: That's exactly how I felt when I saw the first Star Wars movies too. And I am really glad you feel so, looking at my images. Now please someone tell G.L. to hire me. :D

Fabio: Thank you very much.

So finally my machine finished the rendering process. Just in time. I was getting a little bit nervous.
I had to use a really bad compression to get the image into the 150 KB limit. So here is a lager version (50% of final resolution) with a better compression:

Final Image (849 KB). (http://www.bluesplinearts.de/WIP/uplift/Final_50.jpg)

Once again thank you very much for all your support and encouraging words. It was again a great experience and I am looking forward to see you all in the next challenge.

05-11-2008, 05:25 PM
Nice image! I like the gliders, they have a very nice design. Glad you could finish it in time!

05-11-2008, 06:21 PM
nice idea i like the way you have the human technoligy (computer) next to the alien technology (hologram) that is a very nice touch.

05-11-2008, 07:34 PM
Good luck for the two construction companies ;-) and for the challenge.
Very hot there at the space port, I think the guys need some beer :-)

05-11-2008, 07:47 PM
Hey Torsten, great image!! Like a lot your designs and details on the construct ships, really cool!! The colors and enviroment on the image create a nice feeling for a new world :D The man on the bar building is a clever touch to feel the scale on the ships and the building! . Congratulations for your final image, really cool work my friend!! Good luck!! And time to go to that outworld bar and drink some well deserved cold beers and a lot of tequila shots!! yeaaa!! :D Cheers my friend!!

05-13-2008, 01:27 PM
Nice work, Torsten!

05-17-2008, 02:16 PM
Michael: Thank you very much. Sorry to see that you couldn't finish in time.

Chris: Thanks man.

Robby: Thanks. Glad you could finish in time. Enjoy your XSI licence

Fernando: Thanks for your support. Yeah it's time to get some real life experience.

Paul: Thank you very much.

05-21-2008, 12:18 PM
How could I miss seeing your final image? (kicking myself) Congratulations! You've produced another amazing setting with another collection of flying machines worthy of a top sci fi movie. I love your sense of design - you create stuff that is both imaginative and believable, and just great fun to look at too. Bravo!
