( Just a recent sketch as a placeholder untill i've had time to think of an idea. )

Count me in !

this is where the fun begins : )

03 March 2008, 01:49 PM
When the contest ends today, would you be the winner!
I wish you much fun with the competition.

03 March 2008, 02:08 PM
haha thanks man : )

much fun and big luck to you sir!

03 March 2008, 06:31 PM
My heart almost skipped a beat, thinking "If that is the sketch, what are we up against! Aaaaaargh!"
Best of luck, I'll be on the lookout for this entry.

03 March 2008, 06:16 AM
Some nice placeholder... I'll be glad to see your progress...

03 March 2008, 11:05 AM
Whats this? It is already a poster quality scene!
Is this a robot? :bounce:

03 March 2008, 10:19 PM
One of the things david talked to me about was that all of the senior sentient species had "duennabots", hovering or rolling guards to protect ambassadors and businesscreatures. Pretty much all the B&W illustrations I did for "Contacting Aliens" had some sort of duennabot floating in the background.

By the way, Mark says it's ok for me to help people and be a judge at the same time.

I like your stuff.

Kevin Lenagh

03 March 2008, 09:46 AM
thanks all :D

been in bed with a crazy fever since thursday so no progress! hope to get some sketching done today.

many thanks for the comments !

03 March 2008, 04:42 PM
dominochance > oo interesting stuff man, i'm not familiar with the guys work ( the shame ) it would be cool if i could keep more to the theme, i may be pestering you for info as we go :) haha.

KU2GUN > thank you mate! i'm not sure to be honest, i thought i'd do a bit of a sci fi scribble to get in to character, really glad you like it ... maybe it should be an element of this piecde after all ...

steevieWoo > cheers dude, i'll be watching yours too!

JuanManuel > Best of luck to you too man ! looking forward to seeing your updates.

03 March 2008, 03:04 PM
Being down with fever/flu/something is a bummer, not just content-wise, but life-wise. I hope you get better really soon.

It was in fact your sketch entry that moved me to participate in the challenge. It was a sort of "I must be a part of all this, however slim my chances of winning".

03 March 2008, 09:03 AM
JuanManuel > much better now thanks! hoping to make a start for real today.
my sketch ? ? wow that's ace mate, i'm honoured :)

03 March 2008, 09:20 AM
hey dude,,,

lol i thought i posted in your thread last night but i must have been too drunk and closed the window insted of hitting the submit

looking forward to seeing some sweet works from ya!
get to it!!...

have fun!!

03 March 2008, 09:22 AM
yay and you man!

03 March 2008, 09:50 AM
geeee... I llllove your sketch

03 March 2008, 02:35 PM (

ok! :)
The idea is that aliens are being fleeced of any technology and treated as second class citizens.

humans are advancing technology wise as a result of there new ' guests ' but are just using them for cheap labor etc. I’ll have to work the background in some way to really get this across. billboards, lots of clearly new additions to the buildings / traffic.
And may be a few parallels with 50's /60’s America, segregation etc.

( idea number one any how )

03 March 2008, 02:39 PM
u56237z > thanks man :D

03 March 2008, 09:55 AM (

just scribbling, not sure about this idea yet...

03 March 2008, 01:09 PM (

...i'm thinking i going to start an new idea, this would be kind of nice but maybe to understated...?

03 March 2008, 01:10 PM (

...i'm thinking i'm going to start an new idea, this would be kind of nice but maybe to understated...?

03 March 2008, 05:51 PM (

well, that idea was sucking so going to do some crazy sci fi. will do tons this weekend!

03 March 2008, 08:36 PM
Welcome back Alwyn. Good luck with your entry dude!

03 March 2008, 07:49 AM (

yay good wekend! finally did a whole load of work.

i'm digging this new idea, not quite as political or interesting maybe as the last one., but visualy better i think. would love some opinions...

03 March 2008, 07:55 AM
Beelow > thanks man :)

this one should be fun!

03 March 2008, 10:02 AM
It start really well keep on

03 March 2008, 12:34 PM (

after the eon challenge i seem to have decided to go down the movie poster route again. all good fun anyhow.

feel like i'm making a bit of progress now.

03 March 2008, 01:59 PM
This is looking great so far Neubius. However, there's something wrong with the Vin Diesel guy, cause his chest is quite small for his bodybuilding arms. He must be doing sth wrong with his workout routine...
Best of luck.

03 March 2008, 02:11 PM
GaeasHerald > thanks man, super helpfull :) i'll get him to do some bench presses :D

i'm glad you could tell who it was supposed to be also, i went through a kind of 'casting' procces and thought Vin Diesel would be quite cool in the main role. just got to work out who the alien chick is now :)

thanks man,

03 March 2008, 04:33 PM
Nice composition. Very bold coloring, and straight to the point. Great stuff!

03 March 2008, 07:50 PM
Good work !!
I like details of your scene!...
I can not wait to see more!

good luck!

03 March 2008, 08:23 PM
Great !
can't wait to see more

Your beast make me think very much about an entry Pascal Blanché made a long while ago one a contest called "beast of burden"... he didn't finish it, but the concepts were really good. you should look at it if you can find it in archives. you will be surprised (or my mind make me remember weird things....)

03 March 2008, 11:51 PM
just got to work out who the alien chick is now :)

Michelle Rodriguez? Would make a fine alien temptress with an attitude. Just an idea.

03 March 2008, 11:58 PM
awsome progress!,nice creature design:)i llike how the orangy clouds stands out against the purplish sky, keep it coming mate:thumbsup:

04 April 2008, 12:04 AM
Great art Neubius. Like the style. If this helps, mix the clouds more - they seem too bubbly. And how abt, her thumb is up, tryin to get a ride?

04 April 2008, 08:46 AM
I liked the immigration control idea, but this one works as well. good luck to you.

04 April 2008, 09:27 AM
scala > thanks man! loving your entry !!!

sasquatch70 > that's good to hear - generally it's my compositions that let me down, ta!

morganvillette > cheers dude, really enjoying myself !
Klasz > Ah! i love his stuff. i'll go looking for that now, thanks man :)

GaeasHerald > perfect! nice one :D

MichaelZHsee > cheers, i just want to work on it all day now, pesky job getting in the way. haha.

Dragneye > thanks man, this is the first time i've attempted clouds with this level of detail, having a bit of trouble , but it's all part of the fun. going to look at a load of old school painting to see how they are usually handled. updates soon hopefully :)

Pearlyking > cool cheers. yeah i was thinking that idea was considerably deeper, but it didn't really have the visual kick, if you know what i mean.

many thanks folks!

04 April 2008, 10:40 AM
Dragneye > ah! hitch hiking, i didn't think of that
i'll try it out.

04 April 2008, 03:51 PM (

ok, done a few tweaks, added a few details. and i think this works ( enough for now ) as the frame for the female character. ....just need to design her outfit...

i'm thinking maybe in the 70's sci fi theme that she could be blue ! .. bad idea ? :/ haha i'll see how it looks :)

04 April 2008, 11:41 PM
Hi, really like your last idea! The color palette echoes well with the concept, keep it up!

04 April 2008, 09:24 AM
Donglu-LittleFish > hey thank you, i wasn't sure if i'd gone a lilttle over the top with sky. glad you think it works :D

Klasz > hey dude, been searching for that pascal pic with no luck so far. is it in his portfolio ?

04 April 2008, 10:16 AM
Klasz > hey dude, been searching for that pascal pic with no luck so far. is it in his portfolio ?

Unfortunately not... he never completed his entry to this challenge... so i guess he never finished the pic. Perhaps it's too old to be found in the contest archives. if you send him a pm, perhaps he'll be gentle enough to show it to you. it could be interesting..

Good luckk

04 April 2008, 10:28 AM (

just working in to the details.

need to reaserch for the second character...

04 April 2008, 10:31 AM
i found the thread i was talking about....
don't know if it can be of any use for u are some wip pics he posted then.....

04 April 2008, 10:37 AM
oh cool, thank mate :)

04 April 2008, 03:34 PM
nice palette!

and man! he looks like vin diesel! ;)

waiting for the new images!

04 April 2008, 03:57 PM
yay! glad you think so :) that was the idea

some how i decided it was a movie still, or perhaps a poster :/ haha

04 April 2008, 08:59 AM (

just getting started on the 2nd character....

origonaly is was thinking she's going to be blue ( in a 70's sci fi illustration style ) but it may look silly :) i'll try some ideas out as i go :)

04 April 2008, 12:07 PM (

a bit more in... still need to design her alien atributes.

04 April 2008, 01:44 PM
The main thing would be to pull her eyes out closer to the sides of her head, away from her nose. You'd be surprised how alien she'll look when that proportion changes.

Kevin Lenagh / Contacting Aliens.

04 April 2008, 03:14 PM
dominochance > thanks man :) i'll try that too

04 April 2008, 03:28 PM
Got to say I am loving the way the beast and rider are interacting with each other..the beasts head position is great. The lighting on the womans face is nice too. Looking brill!

04 April 2008, 11:13 PM
Yeah, the blue skin would look like Mystique from Xmen. Eager to see how get her to look alien and sexy at the same time. Apart from that, I think there's sth not completely symetrical about the beasts horns. Maybe its just me, or it is meant to be like that...

Oh, by the way, the details are outstanding

04 April 2008, 08:55 AM
Andy--Jones > hey thanks man :)

GaeasHerald > alien + sexy, yeah man, that's going to be the real challenge. yeah kind mystique look... but with clothes! ha
i'll check the the creatures horns i think your right, thanks :)

04 April 2008, 10:22 AM (

possible style of second character

silly ? cheesy ? i'll work it up some more ... :)

04 April 2008, 01:45 PM (

...i think it's working, :/ could use an opinion or 2 :)

04 April 2008, 02:03 PM
She's definitely working for me: alien, exotic and beautiful. She vaguely reminds me of the bronze heads from Ife, some of the sculptures I love most.

04 April 2008, 02:07 PM
Whoah! This stuff is superb (I just had a chance to go through your thread from the beginning). I think the new look for the woman is a great idea - I reckon it adds more fun and more interest to the scene

04 April 2008, 09:24 AM
Thaldir > thanks man. ...and just did a little image search, your not wrong ! that's so similar it's amazing! i was going for that kind of thing but i didn't realise how simiilar it was.
"alien, exotic and beautiful." really glad you think so, that was exactly what i was trying :D many thanks mate!

mdavid > cheers dude :D really needed something to balance the whole image.. and add the 'relations' element. really happy you like ! :)

04 April 2008, 10:29 AM
she is coming along ... keepe it up

04 April 2008, 10:34 AM
Hey there, you have a lot of great work here. I really enjoyed the one where the alien's were being stripped of their technology. But the new one is just too cool!

Matt :)

04 April 2008, 10:45 AM
mmbenya > thanks man, really apreciate it :) yeah i was in to that idea, but visually it just wasn't happening i suppose. really enjoying the new one tho, happy you like it :D

nightwoodwolf > thanks dude, need to design her outfit now ! going to try and take refference from all over.

04 April 2008, 03:57 PM (

ok got the figure filled in. i guess now it's more urgent to design the outfit...

some more balancing required, also need to think about the extreme background.

04 April 2008, 04:02 PM (

a few more details in here too..

04 April 2008, 05:04 PM
Cool A! The metal accesories and the skin texture match very well. Plus, he seems to be staring directly at her bum. lol.

04 April 2008, 08:05 PM
Hey, he look like Vin Diesel in Pitch Black!! Looks very good.

BTW I love this movie.

04 April 2008, 12:16 AM
woooohoooo!! me think so too! :p really cool shading man! just a few things to pump up the volume ..
- since this is a outdoor scene, try adding more bounced light, both for the human character and the creature
- add a little haze, that will be more inviting and will increase the depth in your image
all in all .. awesome man!! :bounce: looking forward to your next post! ;)
good luck bro!

04 April 2008, 09:16 AM
nwiz25 > definately dude, thanks apreciate the points your absolutely right :) nice to have on my thread again man ! peace!

maykrender > hey thanks man :) top movie, also i love a good anti hero.

GaeasHerald > hahaha oops he does dosen't he! ha well, she will have clothes on soon unfortunately :)

04 April 2008, 11:18 AM (

not 100% sure which way to go here :

the human style clothes suggest asimilation of cultures etc which i guess relates to the brief pretty well.

however the more 'alien' outlandish outfit may look better.
what you think ? :/

04 April 2008, 12:58 PM
wow - what a great stuff ... (speachless)

04 April 2008, 01:20 PM
I like the clothes on the left. As you say, it hints to something a lot deeper going on in the piece: She's not just a random alien he's passing, she's dealt with humans a lot in the past. Also, because those clothes are practical like his, it puts them on an equal footing. The more "sexy" you make her clothes, the more you just turn her into a sex object, and then the power dynamic becomes really trite and boring. (imho.) In fact, I'd suggest keeping the human clothes and giving her a rifle or a pistol. Then it really puts them on an equal power level, which I personally find the most interesting. But hey, that's just me, good luck with whatever you decide.

p.s. love the face "tattoos," hope you'll do more of that on the body too!

04 April 2008, 01:33 PM
walrus > great, thanks for that, decision made :)
rifle, excellent idea. would look cool slung across her back perhaps. Would love to hear any comments regarding composition ( as it's usually my downfall ) cheers!

creARTo >hey thank you ! liking your paece mate. :)

04 April 2008, 01:39 PM
Composition? It was fine before you added her. Now it's claustrophobic because you haven't compensated for her being in the frame yet. I'd suggest extending it out to the left. :)

04 April 2008, 01:44 PM
This is coming along really really well Alywn. The tattoos are particularly cool :)

04 April 2008, 01:46 PM
warlus > Ah, perfect. cheers !

looks like i'll be painting some more clouds ! :)

04 April 2008, 01:47 PM
Pearlyking > thanks man!

04 April 2008, 02:17 PM
Hi Neubius :)

I see a proportion and pose problem for the guy. Vince's head seems a little bit too big and stretched and deformed, but maybe it is a choice I don't know, maybe my glasses :) Just a suggestion : the ground could be more on the bottom of the picture to increase the point of view and give a more efficient perspective, maybe :)

04 April 2008, 02:38 PM
hmmm yeah, not totally sure about the shape of his head :/ i'll look in to it :) thanks ( no it wasn't deliberate, haha )

yeah composition needs a few tweaks, going to try a few little variations out. didn't think of bring the camera down so to speak. i'll try it out. maybe some nice texture detail would be nice in the foreground.. hadn't got that far yet :)

04 April 2008, 02:51 PM
if i was that guy, i´ll probably be looking at the girl instead of looking at the floor. I like better the sketch at the right for the girl´s costume. Good work so far.

04 April 2008, 03:34 PM
thanks man, having lots of fun.

the one on the right is better yeah - but think i'm compelled to go for the left though, a bit more meaning to it and .. a little more tastfull i suppose ! ha

04 April 2008, 04:36 PM (

made a start on her properly, think i'm happy with the choice as it will mean a variety of textures and stuff.

got to continue the skin texture or 'tattoo' all over also. early days yet! :)

oh, and need to start balancing the composition again......

04 April 2008, 06:58 PM
Very cool. I only have one critique, and I know it's in it's early phase. I think the creature he's riding has a very limited color pallete, it would be cool to see some of the colors in the clouds give a little more ambience throughout the piece. It has a nice outlaw/nomad feel to it.

Great work

04 April 2008, 05:37 AM
I love the cool looking beast of burden. Very nice.

04 April 2008, 09:17 AM
cheers dude.
ah the creature, yeah you've totally got a point there. i've not touched since blocking the main colours in. ta!
glad you like it!

04 April 2008, 11:07 AM
Wow! Riddick! ^^ hehe. I like the alien girl. She's cool.

04 April 2008, 12:07 PM
hee thanks !! i've really enjoyed using clearly recognizable characters to give it a movie feel, but i reckon i'm definately going to loose kudos in the end :)

ah well ! :) it's all for fun haha

04 April 2008, 03:11 PM (

gradually getting detials in, long way to go still !

04 April 2008, 09:13 AM (

little bit of balancing done, few more details in. this may take a while ! :)

04 April 2008, 02:27 PM (

the more i get done , the more i feel i've got to do! eek

lots of time left tho i guess!

planet in back ground , good idea? or is it too busy ?

04 April 2008, 04:04 PM (

swirly fun !

04 April 2008, 09:02 PM
This is coming along very nicely Neubius. Here's a couple of quik comments - take what works for ya. The eyes on the guy are staring abt right; goes with the wrinkled forehead. IF you like, drop the glasses a bit to accent his eye stare. - the face art I like. It may be viable to add to the whole body but that would seem over the top (but hey, this is fiction right? When is goin over the top unacceptable? :-)) The last comment goes for adding a planet also. I like the idea, but you have to 'feel' it. Keep goin bud... great work.

04 April 2008, 08:40 AM
cheers for the pointers man :)
yeah, think i need sort out his right shoulder for sure (our left ) bit on the chunky side !
the planet i'm still not totally sure about, mad fun painting the swirly bits but it may be to much.... it's inkeeping with the crazy compositional stuff i'm trying to keep it all tied to... but to busy ?

thanks man,

04 April 2008, 10:44 AM
This has really come on since last I looked. The girl's looking really nice I totally approve of her outfit and the planet in the background is a nice introduction. I reckon that gas giant texture would make a great background just on it's own, perhaps with a few dusty cloud wisps to make the planet look hot (just an idea). Whatever you do I reckon it'll come out just great. Keep it up!

04 April 2008, 11:05 AM
ah cool, i'll try that :)

thanks man!

04 April 2008, 12:01 PM (

got get some of these details in and smooth out the skin before adding the 'tattoo' texturing....

04 April 2008, 12:11 PM
Damn good scene!

04 April 2008, 12:40 PM
thanks man! having loads of fun :)

04 April 2008, 03:01 PM (

bit more detail in, i seem to be getting a little obsessive! :/

04 April 2008, 05:54 PM
Great texture work all around leather, fur, skin etc.. Your kicken butt. Can't wait to see more!

04 April 2008, 07:44 PM
Great work on the woman, you've packed so many awesome accessories into here costume she kicks some major @$$ visually! :buttrock:

Matt :)

04 April 2008, 10:14 PM
I like her pose and sensation she convey.
Also jacket texture is nicely painted, leather is well rendered.

04 April 2008, 11:21 PM
Wicked! the detail in the shadow of the zip is brill!

04 April 2008, 12:21 AM
Yeah, that's a yummy tough alien chick ;)

04 April 2008, 09:38 AM
I was off due to some reasons, but i have made my mind up to continue on the "video category" on this challenge. Thus I gave up with the "image category". I wish i have time to complete both but schedule is tough and time gets short. I pray and hope i can produce a good video here.. Let's see anyway.

I have changed my signature link to show the video category entry!!

By the way, your character looks like really Vin Diesel, haha! Your all work like a sci-fi book cover of 70s.

04 April 2008, 02:16 PM
KU2GUN > ah, cool. i'll go over there and check it out :) nice one mate, can't wait to see what you come up with!

js3d > yay, glad you think so! i wanted her to be atractive, but i didn't want it to be gratuitous / cheesy.

DaVee > thanks man, really enjoying doing the details...but seem to be starting new ones all the time :/ eek :)

mmbenya > cheers man! :D

sasquatch70 > thanks! though i may carried away. haha

i'd better get as much done as possible in the next few days. going to new york for a week on friday!

04 April 2008, 08:43 AM (

slow progress....

04 April 2008, 10:48 AM
Very nice work, Neubius  One issue I have is the warm colors on the clouds. It looks like they are illuminated by a red sunset, but the light on the alien female looks more cold. Like a different light source. On the other hand the color contrast makes the female stand out from the background, so the color composition actually works here. Just a thought :)

04 April 2008, 10:51 AM
ah, thanks man

i've got a colour ajustment layer just for her, i thought i'd over done it ( with lots of red ) i'll turn it up! cheers mate :)

04 April 2008, 02:14 PM
nice work so far man. but one thing if is not too late. why the pants and not the skirt? . i mean.. come on! she has to be almost naked .. it looks like a hot place! :)

Keep going . dont listen to my crappy feedback

04 April 2008, 02:58 PM

she's got gear to carry !
:) thanks dude

04 April 2008, 03:12 PM
Nice color and character, love the beast character, Good luck with the challenge:thumbsup:

Uplift Universe (

04 April 2008, 03:29 PM (

still got a heap of stuff to do on both characters. but i think i'm going to start looking at the background, work out what need to be there / done.

: )

04 April 2008, 03:40 PM
Looking good. The sand still too flat but it's just the beginning, right? keep it up ^^

04 April 2008, 03:22 AM
This is just amazing to watch. The standard of your work is superb. I was wondering about the animal/beast. Perhaps some slight difference in the colour around the eye and mouth/gums areas and colour/saturation on the horns would add some interest. Or maybe not, because you clearly know what you are doing

04 April 2008, 03:27 AM
Hey A, I've been meaning to ask you, what are the clouds made of? Cause it would be strange to have water-clouds in a desert like yours. Maybe its a dustbowl comming this way? And that's why she's asking for a lift? I think that would echoe the swirly planet on the background... just some thoughts....

I'm really enjoying the movie poster quality of the picture. Keep 't commin.

04 April 2008, 08:35 AM
JoPu > cheers dude !

Pegahoul > yeah , just getting started on that. :) thanks man.

mdavid > thanks. your definitely right, needs abit of variation. i'll see what i can do.

GaeasHerald > hey , thanks dude! :D haha you know, i hadn't thought about that! i just wanted to paint some clouds! haha . hmmm you've got a point though :/ going to have to find a way to work them in! many thanks,

04 April 2008, 09:02 AM
Nice one Alwyn, I like the sand texture and all those nice little details you've added to the girl. I'm wondering what you'll do with those clouds now - but it's all coming along nicely.

04 April 2008, 09:15 AM
me too! :D

thanks man :)

04 April 2008, 11:36 AM (

worked a little more in.

flipped it just to try and see it fresh. may preffer it like this ( i think i do this everytime :/ ) ha

still lots to do! but definately not going to introduce any more elements. polish and balance time i think :)

04 April 2008, 03:48 PM
Hi Alwyn! A good likeness on Riddick character! Sorry I come in so late! The female alien has a very well-rendered face. Her pants looks kind of unfinished to me maybe because of the blurry section. The flipped version reads more comfortably. I have to agree with the rest about the clouds. They are too saturated and I notice that you have repeated cloud tiles here. Try to avoid that because it looks unnatural. On another note, are you trying to depict an approaching storm clouds? If so, i suggest cooler and darker colours. Looking up good references will great help here. I suggest adding some footprints on the desert sand especially the one trudged up by the beast.

Keep it up!

04 April 2008, 03:58 PM
jeromoo > thanks man. gald to see you on my thread :)

yeah, only just started on her pants. adding the rifle slung across her back and the bag she's carrying next.
i think your right about the desatuation of the clouds, they do seem a bit intense. don't worry about the tiling they're only in place to see if it works :) been desperatly trying to fluff the them up too, they are looking a bit spungy wierd to me.

footprints! cool thanks hadn't thought of that.
cheers for the pointers :)

few more bits in.

last update for a week, off to New York tomorow! everyone's going to finished by the time i get back eek!

A :)

04 April 2008, 04:13 PM
yo neubius good paint over here i have one suggestion ...try to scale down the character on the beast like 75% like pushing abit in the back it gonna bring more depth in the composition..or scale up the girl...i don't know just an idea...

04 April 2008, 04:16 PM
nice one, i think your on to something there :) will do

04 April 2008, 05:08 PM
It is progressing really well! Nice dynamic between the characters. I think that Jaba's suggestion is really good. If you ever decide too scale down the male character, maybe the contrast of his skin tone should be decreased a bit too, just a thought.
Great work! Keep it up!!! :)

04 April 2008, 07:08 PM
Nice developement. You know my feelings for those cloud colors. I think I would desaturate them a bit more actually. I also think rescaling the beast/man would help a lot.

04 April 2008, 10:35 PM
Looking good! I love the whole Pitch Black/Riddick feel. Maybe it's just me, I don't hitchhike, but don't you point your thumb the way you want to go? So If she wanted to go the same direction as the guy, I would think it would be more natural to use the other hand to hitchhike with, pointing in the direction she wanted to go.

04 April 2008, 10:51 PM
One small sugestion. Although it might be a lot of work the picture would have more balance it the planet/moon behind them was in the center. The way the picture is now it is clearly cut as two separate pictures. Maybe a smaller planet/moon (like in 'A New Hope' or in Pitch Black) overshadowed by the big bad planet to the right.

Spot on crit, plus a bit of haze washing up the horizon line and under the beast legs, as smoke clouds rising when stomping, that might help too. I'd use the girl's jacket tones in the beast skin as well, to balance a bit the palette.
The lighting is confusing me a bit, it seems to change slightly from one character to another. Maybe a filling one adding a bit o a rim somewhere will help balance that too, but not sure about that anyway.
And as a personal preference, the scars in her face, I'll take them along the rest of her body, like tribal scarifications of some kind.
The background looks aces and overall quite an impressive pic...

04 April 2008, 10:13 AM
been on holiday and everyone's flying ahead now :) need to get to work! :D

i'll reply properly in a a mo ! haha

04 April 2008, 02:04 PM
Donglu-LittleFish > cool , thanks, i've resized the character slightly and i think it's looking better. haze - yeah i did a few experiments with heat haze earlier on, can't seem to get it right just yet, i'll keep trying :) hopefully something in the next update. thanks man!

MartinNielsen > desaturtaing as we speak ;) thanks dude!

bigmikey > cheers mate. i'll try a few angles and se what i can get away with :D thanks.

Gopez > ah i was thinking of adding a few moons ( but don't want to do my usual trick of adding details untill it's broken :) ) but yeah, i'll try the planet in the middle, will update shortly. cheers :D

harachte > thanks for the poinbters about the creatures pallet, i've been putting off adressing that for a while :) i'll try that out!

cheers folks

04 April 2008, 01:21 PM (

...long way to go ! and under 2 weeks left :/

04 April 2008, 06:35 PM
Yeah, the planet in the middle makes a more balanced composition. It would be nice to have some soft flowing dunes in the back, to make the ground less flat. I also think that extending the canvas down would help too, cause the beasts paws and the girls feet are touching the bottom margin atm, which makes it more difficult to understand the spatial relationship between the two. Those are my suggestions so far. Keep pushing man!

05 May 2008, 09:51 AM
thanks man, really usefull stuff :)
i reckon i'll be doing all of those !

05 May 2008, 01:16 PM
But if you do, you should definetly not cut off her feet in that fashion. :) Better cut off beneath the knees.

05 May 2008, 01:17 PM (

i'm never going to finish this thing!

05 May 2008, 01:19 PM
i'll try that too man,

05 May 2008, 04:18 PM (

minor change to composition... and a couple more deatils in...

05 May 2008, 12:44 PM (

4 days to go!

just to change the angle of her thumb and re paint the dude's shirt.

after that just balancing and try and bring it back together as a decent image :/

05 May 2008, 12:07 PM (

just got to fix her hand ( a better angle , as you can't tell she's hitch hiking ) and do a bit of work on the lighting and maybe i've finished....

05 May 2008, 02:13 PM
Just in time A! Glad you made it. The thicker atmosphere in this one is good, cause it brings everything together and makes the image less contrasty.
Be proud man, you've got the wow-factor with the creature design and the sexy girl, an insane amount of detail in the clothing and skin pattern, and a nice background for the characters to sit in. It's the whole package! Congratz

05 May 2008, 02:17 PM

05 May 2008, 03:21 PM
nice entry the only thing that might hurt your chances is the the guys face...he looks like riddick

05 May 2008, 03:38 PM

that's ok mate, i just do this for fun. ha also, wouldn't ever consider winning :)

i kind of got carried away with the 'movie poster' idea, so i kind of casted people for the charaters.

cheers mate :)

06 June 2008, 08:30 AM
looking forward to seeing these winners :)

anyone know when it's happening ?

some superb entries, can't wait :)

06 June 2008, 11:02 PM
yea thats an intense illustration that. rich with detail..the jupiter like planet up the back there is a winner :). I do agree the rider looks fairly much like riddick, but that shouldn't matter too much. and i do preffer the image without the laser riffle on the back for the hitchhiker for sure.

as for the results. about 2 weeks ago, maybe. there was a post suggesting that there would be consesus* coff* ( a little uplift joke that) coff* i mean results within the next two to three weeks..

that could mean anything :).

again fab work here

06 June 2008, 08:24 AM
yay thank you mate :)

06 June 2008, 03:01 AM
