A quick WIP update, have started creating the lunar rover in XSI. Decided to build it undamaged, still haven't decided which parts to destroy in the accident. Hopefully finish within the next couple of nights.

Finally completed the intact lunar rover model, all ready for destruction!! Next stage is the UFO and the astronauts, will wreck the rover when the composition is all setup.

joshpurple: Thanks for the kudos, I love XSI and have been using it for about 3 years... you can't go wrong with it. Looking forward to finishing the challenge so I can upgrade from 4.2 foundation....

vmulligan: Thanks for the kind words. I did base it on the real thing, did some googling, found some pix. But now I'm dreading to do the aluminium foil texturing...

That's a really funny concept! The buggy's modelled really well, I've never been able to do anything like that myself so I appreciate that it's probally quite difficult.

I have now modelled the TowUFO, it's at about 95%. Will add the tow cable and hook, when I place it with the damaged rover. Looks a little plain now, but hopefully should look really cool after I texture it. Thanks for everyones kind comments so far. Next stop... modelling the astronauts!

Here is the latest in my uplift challenge models. It's one of the astronauts, which was created in XSI, then exported to Zbrush for sculpting and painting. It hasn't had the last level of zbrush detail added yet as I will pose the 2 astronauts first, then add the final wrinkle detail, then paint them. I'm enjoying this challenge and I hope everyone is having as much fun as I am...

Have finally finished posing and sculpting the astronauts, they are now ready for paint. Still haven't decided on composition yet, but when all the elements are ready I'm sure it will work itself out. Next stop, unwrapping and texturing the Flying Saucer.

Finally I've been able to merge my models into one virtual set at work out the composition. Also playing with the lighting to set the right mood. It's strange seeing the image start to come together after spending all this time on separate pieces. Next stop lots of texturing and render testing...

Finally I've destroyed the rover, what a mess! Next is the unwrapping and texturing of the UFO and rover, then the ground texture. Still working on the lighting, getting the mood right before I setup HDRI etc..

I have finally added some colour to the picture! I've been able to find some time and do a final render of scene. Now it's time to do some serious photoshop painting over, ie cloth wrinkles, dust, scratches, decals, etc. It's a long weekend in Sydney this week, so I will have time to do some serious painting and to model "Bob" and get this over the finish line before the deadline!

Thanks for the kudos Brad.

I modelled the astronauts in XSI (low rez for the bodies). I then exported the bodies to Zbrush for fast posing and creating a displacement map for the wrinkles. I enjoy modelling in XSI and the next character to be posted "Bob" in a couple of days will all be done in XSI.

"Bob" has finally been modelled, which was done completely in XSI. Still playing around with HDRI lighting and also messing with the shaders. Could possibly endup using a Fast Skin Shader, but I'm kind of liking the look I'm getting now, going for that cartoon / Pixarish feel. The next stage is to unwrap Bob tonight ready for texturing. Hopefully he will be rendered before the end of the week, leaving the last week for the background to be made.

Yes! Bob is finally finished, and I'm pretty happy how he turned out. Has the cheesy look I was going for. The finish line is getting closer.... next stop designing the brochure and creating the background in Vue...

The flyer part in now complete, it's hard to believe that it's almost done! So much time and effort, but it's great to see the concept come to life. Just need to model the glove and flyer in 3D to place on the background I have created in Vue.

Thanks to all the people who have encouraged me so far and especially a big thanks to my fiance Rachel whose critical eye and "get into your room and work on your project" encouragement has meant that this is a challenge that I will have finally completed.

Looking forward to seeing all the final entries

Haha, you got a great sens of humor!!! Yeah, commercial is the thing nowadays! If Hollywood is making a movie about aliens, they would probably take your concept! The best of luck! :wavey:

Yes! It's almost finished. I just want to leave it for a night and go back tomorrow with fresh eyes before I send off the final tiff. Just need to boost the colours a little and hopefully that's it.

Added in a background and used a photograph of one of my own motorcycle gloves for the astronaut. I didn't see the reason to model and texture and element which was pretty much the border of the image anyway.

Thanks alot to Trey, Zack and Donglu for their positive comments. It makes it all worth it when people with such talent praise your work.

So tomorrow it's triple check time and finish!

It's been a tough slog at times, but also a lot of fun and as always a learning experience.

Hey Andrew, sorry for missed this thread, but finally im here :D Really great concept, cool approach to the subject of the challenge, like a lot your idea. The image is really great and the expression for "honest" bob is totally cool! Love the poses for the astronauts. Relly funny piece and very well executed. The motorcycleglove fits perfect and I agree there would be no point in doing it in 3D.
