View Full Version : Painter X (WIN) crashes when saving to RIFF

I've been using this for a few months now with no problems, but halfway through a project, Painter was unable to save to a RIFF file. The error location is 017F63B7. I don't understand why there isn't a robust Corel forum for these types of technical questions. Can anyone help me?

There are actually a large percentage of Painter users that prefer to save in PSD format due to the lack of stability with the RIFF format. Personally, the last time I saved in RIFF format was probably 7 years ago... But if you are using specific features/brushes that only RIFF recognizes, then I can see how that can be frustrating.

Corel contacted me a while ago asking if they can plug their own forum here (of course I said yes), so if there isn't one right now there should be one soon.

There are certain problems saving to a PSD format, the first, to me, is vector objects (Shapes) are rasterized. Another, if you have any rulers and guides set up, you loose them if you open a PSD format file in Painter, even if you've saved it in Painter.

I can't answer your original question, never having had the problem myself, and I work a lot with large files (25 to 100+Mbyte). Riff has always been good to me. Especially with Painter X.1. I have had some problems with earlier versions. I save in PSD only if I have to do some work in Illustrator or Photoshop.

As far as the Corel site, you can find it here: (

Truth be told though, this site, CGTalk, is a lot more active and you'll be more likely to get an answer here. One other thing, you might want to try to reset Painter. Ctrl/Command+Shift when booting resets Painter to it's factory defaults. Save any of your brushes and special library stuff in a separate folder first though. You can copy and paste into your user file after a reboot.

The PainterFactory forums are becoming more active as the days go by and we expect to have some interaction with the Painter development team in the future.

So... I strongly suggest that you also post your question in the following places to widen your audience and have a better chance of getting an answer:

Also, it's very important to understand that many features in Corel Painter X and X.1 (as well as earlier versions) are not supported in any other format than Painter's native RIFF.That's why I suggest saving to RIFF first, then if you want to save in another format, you'll still have the RIFF file to go back to if you need to work on it later with all Painter-specific information intact.

Read the following thread to learn some things that may help prevent the problems you're having:

Keeping Painter 6 Through Painter X.1 Running Smoothly - Updated February 6, 2008 (

That thread is also posted here in the CGTalk Corel Painter forum but the link is hidden in a Sticky thread and I forgot to update it to include information for all of the Painter versions, from Painter 6 through Painter X.1. Will do that as soon as I find some free time. For now, refer to the thread linked above, at's Painter forum.
