My first real Endeavor with 3-D. Done in Maya.
Poly count: about 2500
Comments appreciated. ^_^
I only want to get better.

Looks good to me. For your first time with 3D, it's great. I can't think of anything to suggest. :p

cool models but I think the composition (is that the right word?) could use a bit of changing. Just the way they're placed doesn't click with me.
but anyways, very good stuff :D especially if its your first project :D

I think the light may be a little too harsh, there are such dark shadows and super white highlights. In reality there would be much more ambient light.

pretty nice for your first time in 3d i'll say that , it's very nice, the 2 jets look too blurry maybe use a motion blur that doesn't look right also the jets for some reason don't look exactly like F-4 phantoms maybe the intakes shape, also the metal does not have wrinkles in the real one, the way the bombs are mounted are also kind of fake lookn, the textures are just awesome :drool:

Good comments, thank you. Yea, I turned off all the lights in my scene and found out it was my specular shader. Was quite aggravated and will fix that in the newer version.
I agree, the intakes are getting there, but i don't think the indentation on the intake is deep enough or extruded enough, making it unreal.

I think the reason you have wrinkles is because of the weighting of the vertices when you put down subdivision surf. modifier
try adding more detail to your base mesh near the edges of the intake, that is if u modeled it using subdiv surfaces thats what it looks like

I will get a better render for critique in a little bit, till then, here's a top, side, and 3/4 wireframe.
It was modeled in polygons and i did edit certain sections to be smoother through subd's.

I've got some input on accuracy... I used to build plastic model kits of these when i was a small child:)
It looks like an F4, i'll give you that. There are some proportion issues- the cockpit is not long enough, it should look like it fits 2 people. The wingparts at the ends should be further away from the wing root. There should be no hump in the nacelle for the engines-they should be straight along the top. The intake under the nose needs work. It shouldn't be there at all if this is an early F4, but later ones got a cannon mounted under the nose, i think that's what you're seeing, not an intake. Check your reference, the top view looks good- it's a good start but needs tweaking to be a Phantom II. The specualrity is a bit high.
And the big bombs aren't bombs, they're drop-away gas tanks. :thumbsup:

Mystifyurmind. hello i'm surprissed of your work looks fine, so there are some little errors in the intake air, looks me too high, and the funny side it's that i working in a model of phantom F-4E, but i made a low poly version. maybe if you made a little variatons in the tetures and enviroment could be looks more realistics. the pilot deck looks too blue.

Feel free to use my image as reference.
But, just keep in mind that this is a Recconaisance version and as such will not be entirely accurate for the combat version you are modeling.
Interesting note - The RF4c (the one I depicted) is STILL in operational service!!
or, a least it was a couple of years ago.

see the back of the f4 in your diagram? that is 20 times better than my version. I could not tell how anything back there looked and if you saw how i modelled it, it is way off. Thanks again! Mmiller, you are very helpful. Also check out my ANIMATION: PROtection also in this forum.

FWIW everything from the cockpit back should be ok.
the differences are in the nose, which was modified to allow for the installation of a camera.

An outstanding first effort, wish my first effort had looked so well, but in the never ending effort to get better some points that have been missed,
1 the intake under the nose isnt an intake, in the models prior to the Foxtrot, its was a rounded nose sensor, later models that was the area where the barrel for the vulcan came out.
2 you got a good start on your prepro but too much is never enough, it pays huge dividends to dig as deep as you can and it is pretty cool learning about the different types, like the RF 4c, tho just to clear it up the air force retired the last of the Recce rhinos in 92, The Alabama air guard was the last unit i think, memory is fading as i get old.
3 I think the drop tanks are good, but the other things on the wings are bomb racks, not bombs themsleves, they are really hard to make out in some of the drawings online.
4 Paint schemes, all the USAF f-4's in viet nam and later that used the woodland type camo (the real name of it escapes me right now) had either white or off white undersides, tan in some other variations isralei (sp?) jets went with the same scheme since that is what the shipped with from McDonell Douglas
5 your mesh looks pretty good cept around from the cockpit forward, it is decieveing from the drawings, but that flat area near the engine intakes is actually a flat panels that is a sort of airdam to break up the flow from the side of the aircraft to go into the engine intake. in the model it looks as if this is just modeled as a flat area near the intake. it is actually sepearted from the fuse by about the width of a fist.
Again, this is a great first effort, i wouldnt have the stones to put my first piece on here, just trying to pass on some info that i hope will help in the future. Keep pressing!!
