I'm looking for a detailed description of how to rigg a character in lightwave to be able to send it to motion builder. Does anyone have any idea where to obtain this information.

Check out page 302 of the manual. It shows the basic rig and the parenting that MUST be adheared to for AUTO characterization. You can have other bones in the rig, as long as they don't overide the required parenting, such as eye, elbow, knee and other bones. The finger bones have a similiar setup that is in that chapter as well.
