View Full Version : DWIII - 2D - fluxen - Psionic Bomb
02 February 2008, 03:11 AM
This is my first sketch of an Invoker. She will be a darkness/void magic user. She channels energy from the artifact and creates a huge explosion like a bomb. Her health and life diminishes every time she does this, but she chose to sacrifice her life for the better good.
I still need to incorporate the artifact object. I'll also try to make her look sickly and maybe skinnier to show her abuse of the artifact's immense energy. I'm not entirely happy with the head gear so I'll try some more variations.
02 February 2008, 10:26 PM
Hey, this is looking very promising!
I love this kind of design and the concept is also very appealing!
Keep on going!
02 February 2008, 05:09 AM
Incredible concept you have going, keep up the wonderful work.
02 February 2008, 05:19 AM
Thanks for the support guys. Good luck to you as well. Here's another update with some sketches I did at lunch. I really liked it's direction so I fleshed it out some more. I was focusing on the sickly/frail idea and the lines and shapes became more alien-like. Now I really want to balance elegance with grotesque.
02 February 2008, 07:00 AM
I really like the direction your going with this, will keep my eye on this thread. Good luck.
02 February 2008, 08:24 AM
Some great stuff in here! I love the face on the last one, along with the body and the movement. I can't wait to see the rest!
02 February 2008, 10:08 PM
great concepts so far! I'll be watching
02 February 2008, 01:41 AM
Neat concepts so far! I like the detailing in her headpiece and wings. The little weels growing out of teh side of her legs don't look very practical, but they do provide a really interesting silhouette, so I knofd of like them. Good luck in developing this!
02 February 2008, 05:03 AM
best concept what i see on DW3 .. wanna this magic grass ;)
02 February 2008, 10:20 PM
very sexy concept.
i'll follow your thread.
03 March 2008, 08:26 PM
Your stuff rocks.
This one will rock too, I'm sure of it. D@mn!
03 March 2008, 09:42 PM
The one with the wings is really good. I would like to see this one more developed.
03 March 2008, 08:00 PM
keep thaat up..
03 March 2008, 03:38 PM
Totally awesome! I'm completely in love with the last one. the head and wings rocks! i feel that the boots could use some of that demon skin. Just the last section i think :-D
03 March 2008, 09:17 PM
please update the winged thing :bounce: :wip:
03 March 2008, 06:07 AM
Hi again. Been busy at work so I wasn't able to do too much but here is a bit of progress. Thank you for the critique. I agree the leg should have more alien/demon armor.
Here I was experimenting with the face being exposed. I wanted her to show more emotion.
Here are some weapon silhouette studies. I want to incorporate a sphere and ancient symbols.
Here is little bit more detail and new face. Also thinking about contrast.
Some color on the image.
03 March 2008, 06:26 AM
aww... i dont like the face, number 2 was perfect,
artifact 1 and 4 are my favs
03 March 2008, 07:42 AM
Cool design~! I might need to agree that the face with the mask seems a bit more unique, maybe it's just me, it's more hardcore type asskickin girl, with the pretty face expose, she seems more like a dark princess/queen/fairy? but hell both of them kicks ass, keep it up dude, love ur loose style~! :D
03 March 2008, 08:29 AM
Really good I liked the colored version the face is so good and waiting to see more good luck:wise:
03 March 2008, 10:13 AM
Looking really nice man. I prefered the face number 1 though. I think you could have something nice going on, on her forehead.
The artifact 3 and 4 are my favourite.
03 March 2008, 03:26 PM
Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm open to your suggestions and I might have to go back to the covered eye version. Maybe not showing her face is more mysterious, less is more kind of thing. Two of you agreed about artifact weapon 4 so, I'll try developing that one more. I can't wait to work on this tonight!
03 March 2008, 04:09 PM
Hum...I am really not into the covered eyes things...remind me some warcraft type character. For me its a bit of an easy way of making a character looks good unless there is a real purpose or a push up version of the covered eyes. I much more prefer your uncovered face version. Her face uncover gives more feeling I think.
03 March 2008, 07:00 PM
i like the blind one.
03 March 2008, 09:36 PM
Very elegant! I love the design so far... it flows very well and has a nice sense of elegance and beauty... Can't wait to see it in 3d... Nice work on the colours as well... I'm lookin forward to seeing this developed more!
03 March 2008, 10:46 PM
Great work so far.
Tough call on the face. I think it all depends on her character. I like that it shows more emotion without the mask--perhaps that she regrets what she does. However, it also makes her look a bit less like a darkness/void user.
03 March 2008, 12:43 PM
yeah color is nice but i think head number 2 was better
sure you open her face but i dont feel any new emotions just calmness
think mask was a little loss humanity but more expressively for this mood
03 March 2008, 01:03 PM
I like the concept with the eyes covered more as well. The way I think of it, she doesn't need eyes. That is how badass she is.
03 March 2008, 02:12 PM
Awesome stuff dude. It's ironic we chose the same class/race/artifact type and I'm relocating to B-more in a few weeks :D Keep the art flowing.
03 March 2008, 04:33 PM
i will go for the face not coverd ... i like to see the eyes of the character somehow its more close to us than a coverd face, i mean u feel more close to the character when u can see its emotions through the eyes... :wise:
03 March 2008, 12:57 AM
Cool!! Like the sketch. Keep going :D
03 March 2008, 02:39 AM
Again, thanks for the support and feedback everyone.
Well, it certainly is a tough call on the head variations. I'll have to get some more feedback, perhaps from my co-workers too. I'm only working this in 2D. I don't really have time to make a 3D version, nor am I very experienced with z-brush.
Omnidzyne: Hey! Welcome to B-more. I actually grew up in the Rosedale area.
Until next update...take care.
03 March 2008, 03:27 AM
its coo dude, lets get some new stuff up.
03 March 2008, 09:07 AM
i like the painting style alot : ]
03 March 2008, 02:34 PM
Looks very interesting to me. Good luck!
03 March 2008, 07:44 PM
I really like the concept. Keep updated
03 March 2008, 07:50 AM
I decided to move on to the illustration. I also decided to keep the more simple version of the weapon as I noticed that the other detailed ones were taking attention away from the character. There's still a lot of work left to do, especially the lower half and some background. I think I'll put some craters in some terrain to show the effects of her exploding attacks. After this is done, it's on to the model sheet.
03 March 2008, 02:23 PM
Woah, I really dig the posture and mood of this piece. The pose and design are solid! Your color sense is spot on! I dig it! I'm coming late to DWIII so to see the iteration now is really cool.
03 March 2008, 07:10 PM
You got it man, thats a great piece, i would sugest a try on green background to contrast her pink tones, your website has some great stuff too.
that's it just sharing my appreciation keep it up
03 March 2008, 12:40 PM
I really like how rich and lush your color is. It's very BROM-esque. I really like the delicate detail in the face too. Can't wait to see how this turns out! ARe you using Painter or PS?
03 March 2008, 04:09 PM
i love this concept a lot. the colors are beautiful and I love how you designed the wings.
awesome work hands down!
03 March 2008, 02:28 PM
nice colors but you need fix helmet form .. he was flowed on right side of the head
make central stroke on the head and you can see that mistake
sorry my english, hope you can understand me // i wanna to see perfect picture )
03 March 2008, 08:47 PM
Thanks again for the feedback. I realized there were some problems with anatomy and perspective so I worked on those issues. I also tried some green in the background and I think its working pretty well. It has a darker, more outer worldly feel now. I'm going to move onto orthos and maybe return to this towards the end.
I use photoshop. I have tried painter and I'd like to get better at it in the future but it's hard to get used to it.
03 March 2008, 09:13 PM
really really good. @_@ I was waiting to see the final image ... and ... yeah its amazing good job man... I love the concept the weapon she is using.
me too I find painter complicated with all the brushes and the options, Photoshop is just fine for me lol
I was wondering where are you going to place the logo?:wise:
03 March 2008, 12:18 AM
very nice  !
I like the warmer tones from the image before the last one, but that's just a matter of personal taste. The hair in the last picture lacks contrast imo, and doesn't integrate that well with the rest of the image.
keep it up,
03 March 2008, 08:12 PM
Hot damn, that is a hip illustration. There is nothing wrong with the helmet at all do the do. I also like the color changes that you've adjusted to. Good work overall.
04 April 2008, 04:40 AM
Well, I thought I would leave the painting alone but I went back into it. I guess I'm pretty obsessed :). Thanks for the crit about the hair. I fixed that up and mostly adjusted the colors cause the previous was looking a bit muddy.
I started orthos tonight, just the front view. The helmet is tough to draw from front perspective. Luckily side view will be quite easy. The back will be a challenge but at least a fresh one.
04 April 2008, 05:07 AM
Really nice work on the color peice. Very pretty and very moody! The only crit I could suggest is to add some appropriate texture to the hair. The sillhouette reads like hair, but lacking any texture, lookin at the larger postions o hair, they feel (to me) like expanses of flech. But overall, really nice work - good luck with the rest of the modeling sheet!
04 April 2008, 05:25 PM
cool stuff. I like how this is coming along...nice colors on the painting and nice values on the ortho mate.
04 April 2008, 07:27 AM
Thanks guys. I indicated some strands of hair, just hinting at some detail. I also layed out all the pages. Hopefully I can call this done.
04 April 2008, 10:29 AM
WOW! Sang Fantastic character! I love the purple, so I love all the colors she has for power! (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#) Excellnt Also the description you mentioned , its great for a good Void heroine, since they always seem to be full of evil purposes and not in her case, I also think that the hair improved a lot , but it doesnít feel exactly as hair more like a ghost of hair, if that's the goal looks good to me ! :)
And if not, well then that's the style you choose, and itís also very respectable as well! I most say the concept sheet its my favourite since I really like to see her face, and with out legs, but the final design look really powerful and full of void magic! I wish nothing but the best in this war for your character I always like her since the beginning!:beer::cool: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)
04 April 2008, 01:19 AM
Not much of an update but I submitted final images and final thumbnail today. Thanks for all the generous crits and comments. Good luck to everyone!
04 April 2008, 03:13 AM
I didn't even know that you were representing CGTALK. I just found your entry. Man, it came out really cool. I love the mood and colors. You get better with each piece you do. The idea with your relic is really cool as well. Good luck!
04 April 2008, 05:39 AM
hey fluxen (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=34527) :)
i just want to say, nicely done :), very "nicely done".
good luck, love your work
04 April 2008, 08:55 AM
ok see now this is what im wondering, is the concepts page supposed to be the concepts we went threw, or the concept of what your character can do?! every one seems to be doing what their characters powers and stuff are :-/
04 April 2008, 11:01 PM
great work Sang! I especially like the concept sheet. It has some nice, loose yet structured sketching. Good luck!
04 April 2008, 12:12 AM
Flork: Well the submission guideline says "initial rough draft sketches." Perhaps the stuff the character can do was part of their brainstorming.
kinonato: Thank you. Good luck to you as well mate!
El-Ruco: Hey Piero! Glad to see you here. Thanks for you comment. Sketching loose while having structure is something I admire and hope to become better at. I'm going to check out your entry. ;)

YAY! Moore Girl Powers!!! Go on! And do some damage I really like this for the videogame! Great to see all your process of design and well balanced style!
04 April 2008, 10:19 PM
Wow nice paint job, this one deserves some stars. Awesome work!
04 April 2008, 11:28 PM
Thank you everyone. I really apprechiate it. I must have spent the most time on the color part because I enjoyed it so much. One thing that I might have done differently is adding some sketches of action poses. Too bad I didn't have the time or energy at the time. I already can't wait for DW4! ;)
04 April 2008, 09:29 PM
Well done Sang. Your work has progressed a lot from the Alex & Tom days.
04 April 2008, 10:48 PM
04 April 2008, 12:53 AM
ArianTibbs: Hey man. Good to hear from you. Looks like your in LA. Hope your doing well. I'd like to see what you've been up to! Cheers.
Invention: Thank you!
04 April 2008, 10:42 AM
Wow, the idea behind this character is great and the idea for the artifact is very unique. Great stuff. I would totally love to see this in 3D. Good luck with the competition.
04 April 2008, 05:24 PM
04 April 2008, 05:34 PM
