OK finally could get some time to make my first sketch is kind of rough I didn't had to many time bcause of work but this weekend....,well is just the first idea of many to come, Oh I forgot he is an Invoker maybe he summons or maybe he is dark don't know yet the levitating arm is pure magic no mechanical stuff in there he sacrificed his arm to get that unholy one

02 February 2008, 10:40 PM
this are rough head options, work's killing me I did this ones at lunch time

02 February 2008, 03:10 PM
Another sketch
this big mask guy summons two beasts with the skulls on the back of his whip the first one is for defense and the second for attack. The big one behind him is for defense the other one haven't desing it yet

02 February 2008, 03:24 PM
I'm really diggin the first concept. I do think the arm on the left is a little too big, but overall that is a great looking sketch.

02 February 2008, 04:20 PM
right is kind of big, I'll work on it.Thanks for the feedback

02 February 2008, 05:19 PM
I love the first sketch, but am also fond of the masked guy. You tried doing the floating arm guy with the mask?

02 February 2008, 05:44 PM
that sounds interesting maybe I'll give it a try thanks

03 March 2008, 08:04 PM
Some sort of wizard dragon I thought I was gonna have free time on the weekend but i was wrong this was the only thing I could do

03 March 2008, 08:42 PM
I wouldn't apologize, this looks really cool! Keep going with it - human mages are relatively common compared to humanoid dragon mages. The one thing you might want to thing about bringing over from the earlier concepts are some robes or cloth, like in your previous drawing: It'll help, the dragon look mor intelligent and mage-like more than if he's mostly nude. Good luck!

03 March 2008, 10:27 PM
Thanks for he comments Walrus, I really respect you as an artist I've seen your portfolio, this is the first time I am posting for real on Cgsociety I've been a member for over a year only to learn from the best I'll try to do my best
I think I'll follow your advice and mix the three earlier sketches.

03 March 2008, 12:02 AM
Hey man! Good stuff... :) I like the conept of a wizard dragon, i also agree with walrus about the robes.. A dragon wizard could easily be mistaken for a warlord. Try to give him personality and make him look like he would use mind over brute force. Keep it up!

Good luck!

03 March 2008, 12:16 AM
Really nice sketches. Can't crit when there's nothing to crit.

03 March 2008, 02:24 PM
thanks for the coments StacyOgie & FrozZT I'am a little sick but I'll be posting later some stuff

03 March 2008, 09:42 PM
I think this is gonna be the path I'll take thanks for all the ideas and critiques you've been giving me.
Is a wizard dragon with a floating gauntlet he is wingless, but he managed to fly anyway, this is the first sketch but I think this is it, still have to desing the weapon and choose the element, lot of work also on the cloth patterns and tatooes hope you like it

03 March 2008, 09:10 AM
Looks good. You might want to make the floating gauntlet as the artifact itself, because the idea of it floating already reminds of some kind of artifact

03 March 2008, 02:41 PM
thats a hard choice cause I was already sketching the weapons, so that means I'll have to erase the floating arm or make it more complex, or maybe he can summons many kind of weapons with his gauntlet. Anyway thanks for the commment

03 March 2008, 07:34 PM
wow, long time not posting, I have a few sketches more waiting to be uploaded including my defined character but they'll have to wait a little more cause i have issues with my pc
anyway this my weapon of choice so far two swords that fuse and create some kind of summoning portal or beam, havn't decided yet, critiques are welcome,..... please

03 March 2008, 10:12 PM
Dunno how much of a crit this is, but I like the idea!

03 March 2008, 11:35 PM
Looking great! I'm especially liking the design and the idea of the portal dual-blades. Very fitting for a summoner character (and it could be a new take to have an anthropomorphic dragon like the one you have summoning a giant human, huh?) and pretty original in how you are executing the concept. And it might be cool to have some of the rune effect of the "wings" appearing within the portal to help the design of the two elements mesh a little more.

It seems like you might be having a bit of trouble in making up your mind in what you where you want to take the final direction of this. It can be tough to make up your mind between multiple ideas when you have more than one worth following. Have you considered developing a story for him? It might help you narrow down your ideas and get them flowing in the same direction, as well as help you come up with some interesting rationales for your ideas.

Great work - I'm excited to see where this one evolves to!

03 March 2008, 06:21 PM
First, thanks for the comments about the weapon Iam really glad you guys liked it

This is the WIp of my final characte I am still working on the armor design and he is going to have lots of tatooes maybe different skin colors, Is not finished as you may see but I posted this early art bcause I want to hear critiquies about my painting please comment

03 March 2008, 07:28 PM
Your character sketch design is so brutality, I like it!!! and for the WIP it seems like you're decrease the degree of power and forceful of the character? or maybe it is in progress?

Please keep it on, your style is unique! :)

03 March 2008, 08:21 PM
thanks funkydog that you really liked it , and for the comment I said it was Wip because as you may see he still dosen't have any armor and is not fully painted,it also needs a little more of contrast on some scales, maybe some color variations and still have too work on the light and shadow values.

03 March 2008, 09:12 PM
great design. i was going to attempt a bipedal dragon myself, looking at this i wish i had. love the wings!

03 March 2008, 10:50 PM
cool character, and very original weapon idea.
I especially like that twisted design in post #8.
I hope the final will look at least as cool as that one

03 March 2008, 06:26 AM
It's coming along well so far. Nice work on all of the textures on his body. I'm not so sure about the design of his headpiece - it looks less like a helmet or cowl or magical headpiece, and more like a bridle, which makes him feelless like a character and more like a pet. More clothes would help that, too, even thoguh I know you want to show a lot of tattoos. But anyhow, just a thought. Good luck with the rest of him!

03 March 2008, 07:02 AM
Hi Gyorkland,
I like a lot your wizard dragon I think his personality still has not been revelled yet although the body type seem perfect for a good and fearless wizard and the more detailed texture he has more ancient he looks for the same reason more wise and powerful, similar as trees, well those are my 2 cents for now, and the wings are a great concept by the way, great work! :eek:I'll keep up watching you for sure!

03 March 2008, 12:41 PM
Latest looks awesome to me. He reminds me of the Viashino guys from Magic the Gathering.

03 March 2008, 12:49 PM
Love it's head. Is it ging to have wings? 'Cause I realy think it doesn't need them. But, well, it's just my opinion.^^

03 March 2008, 02:22 PM
thanks for all the commnets very much and
walrus about the headpiece is just for the moment you see I wanted to post my progress and there was this big hole on his head with no texture so i had to fill it out, and he is going to have clothe but on a different layer cause I am still not sure what he is going to wear, well as a matter of fact I've made two armors but Im not too happy about them.
eMysfit Im gonna check Viashino to see if he can be usefull thnks for the comment
kenzoabeki I think you are talking about the previous version but Im still considering keeping the wings for the last one, this dragons are actually wingless the 've gotten smart but lost their wings in the process so this guy use some sort of magical artifact to fly, well not call it artifact is more like part of his armor

03 March 2008, 02:32 PM
I've been so busy on the thinking on the character and the weapon that I almost forgot about the guys he is going to summon, I want to make two summons one for attack and the other for defense this is the first quick sketch of the summons, first I was gonna go for two sick beasts but I also found cool Miqosis idea so this is kind of a mix this are still early versions please comment

03 March 2008, 06:30 PM
Ok this is probably my roughest sketch took me like 5 minutes , I was eating a sandwitch and came up with this idea of a four tailed beast that have warriors on the tip of each tail, the tails can stretch like forever and could fight with at least 5 mechabeasts at the same time. please wanna know your opinion Now! cause I want to see if you find it cool guys time is running out I just have like two weekends left not 19 days.

03 March 2008, 04:20 PM
That dragon dude is looking bad ass. Nice work

03 March 2008, 02:09 AM
Hola Jorge,

I like all your summon ideas, But I think the mecha thing is a bit banned for the contest I might be wrong though but it will be safe to play safe, since our time its running out! :wip:

Now The Dragon looks great! And maybe change the mecha guys for some ancient stone or bone warriors to his tale so you can still have the shapes you are aiming for, and get rid of that problem!:wise:

03 March 2008, 02:14 AM
i think he might fight against 5 mechabeasts....

03 March 2008, 01:22 PM
About the dragon, I'm liking his anatomy, but I'm not too fond of those super-live reds. But thats personal taste I guess.

As for the summoned creature, I do prefer the idea on the first 2 (reminds me of Incas somehow), although they look kinda stiff

Hope that helps :)

03 March 2008, 10:19 PM
Its really progressing well, man. I almost forgot that you were making this character a summoner, so normally I would say the design for the actual summon probably should have started when you were working on the character so they could develop simultaneously.
However I really like the first concept of the two summons (a pair with one defensive specialtist and one offensive specialist is an excellent idea). The second doesn't grab me so much - simply because of what you are doing with the summoner himself. Your character already has such a savage appearance that for him to summon a ferocious beast like your second design just seems unnecessary...
Which kind of brings up an issue with your character's design. You want him to be a mage/summoner type, but it really seems like all the visual elements you are leaning towards the prototypical Fighter/warrior look. I think one of the trappings of the contest having us choose from a class system is that the character should actually look like its class. To just design a warrior and just tell people that its actually a mage or summoner kind of gives the impression that the designer is trying to have his cake and eat it too. I think the main point of Dominance War isn't to come up with a character that looks like it could genuinely be the most powerful character in the lot, but a character that is a truly creative design that pushes a unique concept despite the constraints of the rules.

In respect to that, I think suggestions like Walrus' of giving him more clothing to create a stronger look of civility - a trait that one would commonly associate with a summoner or wizard - would really help your design. It may seem like more work to start on a more elaborate outfit for him at this point (I haven't even started on the clothing for my guy yet), but you might also find the savagery of your character's design could spark a really interesting contrast with elegant or perhaps even regal clothing design.

The deadline's closing in fast, so I don't know how much my input is worth now, but I at least gotta say this is looking fantastic, and no matter what direction it takes I cannot wait to see this guy in final design!

03 March 2008, 02:25 PM
Thanks for all the comments I like to see different points of view, but because the first 2 days that I post my summons Idea nobody posted I had to choose myself so I decided to go for the 4 tailed beast, but I think Im going to listen to Miqosis and will try to make it kind of less agressive, the armor of my character is almost finished and he is looking no longer like a warlord but I have a terrible problem, my computer literally xploded Im right now buying a new mainboard. I loose a complete holyday staying home to finish my work since friday, and this happen , well no time to complain I hope I have enough time to finish, anyway its been an incredible experience to participate on this challenges I've learn so much about characters development, thanks to everyone that had helped me.

03 March 2008, 08:46 PM
life sucks men! first you have all planned and then your computer blows up in the worst moment I'll have to apologize with Cgsociety a soldier might be fatally wounded before battle, it appears that in just 2 years my computer became completly obsolete and if I change the mainboard Ill have to change all the other pieces, including the case so that means new computer. I hope I figure out something quick before is too late Im so freaking angry
Good luck to everyone.

03 March 2008, 10:38 PM
Crap :\

Try doing the rest of the sketches and even line art for the final illustration in traditional media. With luck you'll have the PC ready to colour\paint those on time (or will be able to borrow one from a friend for an afternoon eheh).

Hope you can make it

03 March 2008, 06:57 PM
I'AM BACK!! my *#^$@ computer is better than ever but I still don't know if Im gonna finish my work , by the way why Dominance pge says 16 days left? anyway this are the four tails of the summoned monster the first two are the heavy guys, the strong guys but the one on the left dosen't like quite much the fat guy, the other two are the crazy, quick guy and the boss or leader,

I don't think the summoned beast are going to appear on the winning entry, they would distract too much the eye from my main character, I think they will only appear on the thumbs sheet, I haven't post this yet but in the final concept for the dual swords they have the portal on the bottom and the blade is divided on 3 parts each part with a symbol and when he cross the blades matching the same symbol from the tip to the bottom he will summon a shield, wings , and some kind of wave attack, the finl sheet could be the guy crossing the blades and summoning his wings. what do you guys think I must do?.

03 March 2008, 07:03 PM
double post sorry

The Flork
03 March 2008, 09:27 PM
haha i dunno man, i think the very first design on post one its the best! its cool and to the point. seems like you (like me) are trying to cram to much cool stuff into one guy haha and i think the very first guy is all the cool yah need ;-D

03 March 2008, 10:35 PM
believe me The Flork is not that complex, I know that you come to my thread and see too many different ideas but this is what it really is:

Race: Dragon(a wingless dragon borned on a winged warrior dragons society)
Class: Invoker
Element: Summoning
Artifact: dual swords(creates a portal to summon a final attack beast, and have other summoning powers for one on one fight.)

I want him to look like a boss at least a middle boss so he cannot have only one attack, that would be too easy and borring.
I like the first sketch too but then oder ideas came and ended up on this, I am sooo emotionally attached to this idea that it would be impossible for me to change it right now, thanks for your comment, maybe you are right but is too late.

03 March 2008, 02:14 PM
I think the heavy guy from the left has a more bossish look to him than the boss himself to be honest. He just looks much more respectable

03 March 2008, 09:28 PM
I really like your drawings, lots of good ideas and solid draughtsmanship. You are good Jorge.

04 April 2008, 04:20 PM

04 April 2008, 05:26 PM
great concept man!!

04 April 2008, 02:04 PM
Ok, I upload everything at work so I have to bring all the stuff on usb driver I brought the wrong file this wasn't finished yet but what the hell I'll post it as a WIP
on the finished art he is crossing his swords and summoning wings
Sorry if I didn't put him on a more exciting pose but I didn't have enough time to make another one so I used the same file I posted on page 2
I really like the final job, because this is actually the first time I finish something on PhotoShop I'll post it tomorrow

04 April 2008, 06:52 PM

Ivan thanks for the comment.
I will always thank you guys even if it is 6 days later.... sorry

04 April 2008, 08:07 PM
Nice,, I like the heavy dude top left.. very cool design, would love to see it to full realization.

The Flork
04 April 2008, 10:06 PM
Lookin good man! one thing to be carfull about is his belt spike strap things, look like their connecting to the tail. and i think it would be cool if the hair was longer and stringy and hung off the long neck.

other than that lookin pretty cool! :-D

04 April 2008, 10:26 PM
Definite improvement on the color, and I'm liking the dude overall.

Only nitpick I guess its worth mentioning is the CGSociety logo. Try putting it higher on the robe in order to make it stand out more

04 April 2008, 11:07 PM
QuantumPixel Yeha he is my favourite too but he wont appear on the final sheet only on the modelling one it would be too much info for one piece maybe I'll paint him and his buddies just for fun after the WAR

Thanks The Flork you are right about the spikes but I already fix that up on the final version I think I'll try the longer stringy hair tip that would definetly make him look better

Mogardo Iam glad you liked it about the logo I'll have to check it out cause I don't know if the blades would cover it if i put it higher thanks anyway

04 April 2008, 05:59 PM
Hey David, really cool concept and like a lot the design on your character and the elments of the armor :) . The colours look great. Again, really great work and looking forward for more updates. Cheers mate!

04 April 2008, 07:42 PM
THIS IS IT SO WHAT DO YOU THINK UHH?? This is wierd but i think I'm going to have more trouble on the other sheets because of work and college

04 April 2008, 09:05 AM
Hola Jorge,

Hey hope the computer it’s not giving you to much trouble! I think you can do it! ;) You are doing great with the colors, I like the tale improvements, and the logo looks great were it is, in my opinion, those wing are so wicked! They look so powerful and I like the yellow glow although will be good to see them doing some damage to the floor, just to play more with the environment, suggestion of course. The hair looks a bit shaggy but it’s not over yet so no comments about that for now ...hehe ooh! The glow in eyes will good if they left some spec yellow ghost , from were he turn his head!

04 April 2008, 05:17 PM
thanks alex for the feedback I think I'll try the fade glow on the eye sounds cool but about my computer I think I don't need it anymore the rest is up to me but I only have time to draw on weekends so I am going to skip work tomorrow  and finish this on the morning cause I study at night I am not going to give up at this point, but please don't tell my boss.

04 April 2008, 06:40 PM
Hey Jorge ... hahahaha ... perdón por no haber hecho un analisis profundo de tu concepto :D, espero no estes molesto ya que escribiste con mayusculas... y eso me confundió un poco :D

About your composition, I think you need to open a bit your canvas to play wit the forms of the wings without cut out through the canvas. Perhaps more rim light and back lighting over your character to popup a bit more. The background dont need much contrast to gain deep and dont fight with your charcater, only a comment. I hope you have time to finish your concept ( I like a lot your concept :D) .. and I in the same problem like you :)
Time to become vampires and use all the hours of darkness :D Really great work Jorge... ( me gusta mucho tu concepto y tu estilo y como decimos aca en México, está muy chido! :D Salud Jorge y tendremos que tomarnos unas cervezas pa celebrar tu imagen final  )

04 April 2008, 11:20 PM
POW! hahaha it certanly is eye catching now! :-D

04 April 2008, 01:07 PM
Wow, this is very well done. Ireally love the details you put onto this creature. The black and yellow combination is one of my favourites too! Good luck to you.
